KeymasterI don’t think you can put Dories on a crew and use it for another crew on the same ship, regardless of any links.
Looks like the opposite to me – the keyword doesn’t say the game piece with the keyword has to have the link. As long as the ship’s linked crew is aboard, that should trigger the ability to work. We just didn’t see Dories on a crew from Wizkids.
Ben
Keymaster@Ochobrazo2298: I do like those, I also have a Necromancer in my Epic Seas set. 🙂
Ben
KeymasterNot super useful but I play them a fair bit.
@Jack: I like the way you play… I think you experiment with the “bad” stuff (recruiters/Marines/etc) more than I have! I think it’s partly because I like using extra generic crew or equipment over some of the less-useful named crew. Something about spending 3+ points on a named crew that may not affect the game whatsoever… I’d rather just put a bunch of oarsmen on my ships for protection and a little movement insurance. Though it’s been a while since I played regular games consistently.
I usually feel like it is just my fault that I don’t play the OP pieces out of principle haha!
@Randy: Be careful if you match up against Xerecs! 🙂
We do have a group rule that new players get the BC, but once they win a game, she is off limits!!!
That is a neat idea! It also gives them an idea of what top-tier stuff can do. Sometimes people in the community talk about fleets they’ve used to win consistently, but it’s nowhere near the level of UPS competition/etc. Though I was totally guilty of that in 2011/2012 lol. XD (took me a while to go through the fleets at MT and finally stumble upon darrin’s UPS stuff haha)
I hate mermaids a lot more than Hidden Cove. Becalmed is also extremely OP especially for the player going first. (essentially – go first, twice!!)

KeymasterAre there any other concerns or criticisms on the ship types I presented in post #11796. Any issues to discuss with the Cog, Caravel, Carrack, or Drua.
For Carrack, I would recommend “gets” +1 to its cannon rolls instead of “has”, to be consistent with existing abilities.
It would be interesting to see the design of a drua in the game.
If not I’d like to know their possible point costs before I start working on the ship manifest.
I would put Cog and Drua at 1 point each. Caravel at 1 or 2. Carrack seems the most consequential of them and I would probably want to playtest that one starting at 4 points.

Keymaster@Jack: Looks like a pretty solid fleet actually with plenty of gold gathering capability. Looks to me like the Favori would have 3 cargo spaces open instead of 4, though that’s still good for the main “gunship” of course. 🙂 Actually I do want to see this fleet in action.
You could swap Bordeaux for Gendarmerie Rene Moreau to get 2 extra points. Lots of good options in that case – helmsman on the Intrepide or Favori, explorers on both of those ships, or maybe oarsmen on the Favori and Bon Marin.
Ben
KeymasterIs there any link in the game as worthless as Benito de Soto and El Tejon? You can’t even use them together without Jonah! Wth??
It’s a disaster with them. Also a great example of why Reverse Captain should have costed 2 points – it’s not as useful as Captain. If that were the case, Benito would be 5 points, allowing a helmsman on the Tejon (which you want for that ship anyway) and the link would allow for a coin at some point in the game. Instead, to use the link you have to pay 16 points for a ship moving L that is fragile with no space for any treasure. (and Jonah can only benefit Benito, whereas normally you use Jonah to put a ton of crew on a ship with a lot of cargo)

KeymasterThis seller has a factory set of RV along with a few other things.

KeymasterI’d say I’m 90% wanting to be a player, 10% collector of any English ships I can get cheap. I might have to check out Vasal.
Welcome aboard! Sounds somewhat similar to me a while back. My VASSAL page has a tutorial that should be helpful to start using it.
Ben
KeymasterMaster Spreadsheet changes: Santa Teresa name fixed in both versions of SM (no “La”), fixed incorrect game piece types in original version of RV.
Also, some easy link references I made with bit.ly:
http://bit.ly/PiratesCSGMasterSpreadsheet
https://bit.ly/CustomsDatabase
This way, if you’re at all like me, just pop open a new tab and type “customsd” or “piratescsgm” and the browser might automatically give you the URL to quickly access the desired spreadsheet.
Ben
Keymaster@Woelf: Is the Amity from CC supposed to be a common? She is on the cards but the spreadsheet(s) list her as uncommon, which is normal for her ship type.
Ben
KeymasterWas looking up the username Alanqsmithee after posting a custom by Riz that the former did flavor text for, and what do you know – a flickr account with customs! 😀 It looks like Pirates of the Tolling Depths, which was at least partially posted on Miniature Trading. It’s been a number of years since I’ve seen these customs….

KeymasterI typically stick to 40 point games and Marines add up really quickly, but that hasn’t stopped me from using them a lot.
Wow. I’ve barely found myself considering using Marines at 80-100 points. There’s just always something I’d rather have in the fleet it seems.
Brief CG4 update: Second point count of the game which led to 2 new records being set! +A modified crew setup and another threat!
Ben
KeymasterHe flips explosives and it works, sinking my ship… and by rule, magically depositing 4 coin on my HI, allowing me to win next turn.
That is epic and great strategy! Reminds me a little of VASSAL Tournament 2 where Xerecs and I had to be aware of where specific amounts of gold were to plan our actions each turn.
Nice use of L’Hercule as well. You probably also enjoy/would enjoy the Concordia and Dreadnought. 🙂 I don’t think it would be an optimal crew setup, but both of those ships could also carry a Marine and musketeer, so you could fire with 7 cannons without having any masts up. (and without getting into Carbon Charlie/etc)
Ben
KeymasterBen’s set reviews are great and I use them to find which ships sound interesting.
Thank you for checking those out!
Luckily it seems that rare does not necessarily equate to being the best ship in a set. Lots of solid uncommons and commons.
Indeed. It’s one of my favorite aspects of the game. I also like how you can get more than one rare in a pack.
Ben
KeymasterIs there a rule set for solo gameplay? I am lucky, and have a crew for game nights but would like to get this on my table more.
Not an official one, but if you really want something to look at, Cadet-Captain Mike has a page for it on his site.
I’ve played hundreds of solo games, and my best advice is to play each fleet equally as if you’re personally trying to win the game with every single fleet you control. Put yourself in that fleet’s mindset and strategy when their turn comes up, then shift gears for the next one. I actually love it because you have so much control over what happens and you can play each fleet however you like.
Ben
KeymasterInteresting to put all the crew on one ship. Tough scenario to win with – just SM and no extra points. I suppose Harbinger could dismast one runner early and leave it for the Dorado when she eventually gets there, then the Harbinger could go after another ship. I think I’d prefer swapping out Cat for a helmsman on the Dorado and another oarsman on the Harbinger. Better to have 3 guaranteed extra actions via Sac than finally get SAT when you need an EA (to move + explore enemy derelict).
Ben
KeymasterWhat pieces would you put on L’Hercule (22 pts, 3 cargo) to deck her out the best? Overall fleet build total isn’t important here.
I personally would actually want to prioritize the cannons over boarding, mostly because they can keep firing as the ship takes hits. There I’d want Barbinais (4 point World Hater) aboard.
Are you opposed to using RtSS pieces? If not, I’d probably go with:
Lady Roimata (6 points for Captain+SAT)
Barbinais (World Hater)
Godiva (0LR Reroller primarily for SAT)
Helmsman
OarsmanOnly uses 13 points of the 22 point cap, but here we can have 8 shots at 2S/1L regardless of any masts missing.
Keep in mind that Jocard’s “doesn’t take up cargo space” ability text is subject to the No-Stacking rule, so the oarsman would have to go to make that setup work.
Ben
KeymasterNo love at all for the Dreadnought? I suppose it’s just too expensive.
I like the ship, but you asked for the best English 5 masters. I assume you’re mostly talking about regular games, and in those she’s too slow and expensive to match up well with most of the great English 5’s. RotF Griffin (LE) would be a nice match; with him and MI Hermione Gold and a helmsman aboard, she could move S+S+S with those “eternal cannons” essentially at 1L.
In a campaign game she can really shine!
Ben
KeymasterWhat are the best English 5 masters? Seems to me they peaked in SM with Titan and Lord Algernon. Goliath is okay. Cheap. Dreadnought is potentially super powerful but basically too expensive (and slow) to play. Swallow is very good.
Here is my Top 10 English gunships. HMS Titan was an early peak, but the Endeavour is up there with the best of them. HMS Victoria, HMS Dauntless and the Apollos are good. The Aberdeen Baron is also a nice cargo ship.
Ben
KeymasterJust finished the Michiel de Ruyter movie. Loved it!
Ben
Keymaster…do face down UTs still count for a cargo space?
Yes indeed!
Ben
KeymasterIf I have an ability that moves an enemy ship (like an L-mover on a 5-6), how does the timing of d6 rolls work with sargasso seas when forcing a ship onto one of them? Do I roll for the ship and that rating stays for my opponent’s next turn? Or do (only) they roll once it comes back around to them? If the latter, it must be assumed that the ship is tangled?
Did Wizkids mess up the ability text for Jailhouse Dog? It says “you CAN load this treasure face down” (emphasis added of course). In that case, what’s to stop me from loading it face up and having it not take up cargo space?
Can players choose UT’s for Pandora’s Box that cannot be loaded? If the ship is full and face down UT’s are selected, are they tossed out?
How does “chaining” Pandora’s Boxes work? If Pandora’s Box brings in another Pandora’s Box, can you get multiple UT’s from each player? (If you had a TON of copies of it, you could just “infinite loop” the UT and hand out UT’s like it’s Christmas morning lol)
Ben
KeymasterOk, Please someone tell me what the resources idea is. I’ve been hearing that idea bounced around but have no clue what it means.
It’s in reference to cannofury’s Economy Edition rules.
Ben
KeymasterHeh, just you wait, you haven’t seen nothing yet.
XD Well then right back at ya partner for CG4!! O_O
Ben
KeymasterNice reports!! Awesome pictures as always. The battle happening in Report 9 is so cool to see. I’m still just so glad that we document these epic games and big battles.
Ben
KeymasterYes, that’s sir Edward from F&S.
But that’s the problem and where my confusion comes from. The name of the crew is Sir Edmund, not “sir Edward”.
I wonder, did someone actually made a Cursed fleet with 2 – 3 sea monsters, for 80 points, that’s actually playable?
Not that I recall offhand, though it’s probably been done. I like using them at 150 though.
