Ocean Terrain Contest #3 – first page.  Pictures of the entire thread that I have are too big to upload as pics on this site, so I might get a zip folder for them.

@Robert: Going through your set now!  Here are my rough ideas/estimates on some point costs:
0 and The Fool: are these supposed to be simply negative game pieces? Why would anyone ever use them? Does The Fool’s negative ability apply to ALL of that player’s ships? If so, it is OP in a weird way.

    I: 40 (why only 9 cannons?)
    The Magician: 11
    II: 16
    The High Priestess: 3
III: 20 (final ability could use more clear wording; “unless this ship shoots at them first”/etc)
The Empress: 18+/rework – final ability is very OP. If an opponent shows up with HMS Titan/HMS Grand Temple/etc, it’s like it’s in your fleet instead of theirs. Too powerful, could reduce to working on a roll of 5-6 or just 6.
    IV: 24
    The Emperor: see The Empress
    The Hierophant: 9
VI: “If this model has one remaining secondary hull it repairs the other as a free action.” – This seems too powerful, especially if it happens automatically when it’s still an enemy’s turn.
    The Lovers (Jack): 6
    The Lovers (Jill): 5
-These present an issue where you could use both of them on their non-linked ship. (since Linked only applies to the ship) Would Jill make a 10 master’s cannons all 2L’s or just 3 of them?
    VII: 10
The Chariot: 5. Second ability presents overlapping issues and likely weird rules interactions because a ram ends a move action, period. An interesting concept I like though.
    VIII: 21 (only 3 cannons?)
Strength: 12 (proposed wording: “If this ship succeeds at a ram, this ship gets +L to her base move for the rest of the game (this ability can be reused).” You can’t sink by ramming though…)
    IX: 10
    The Hermit: 3
    X: 18
    Wheel of Fortune: 5
    XI: 15
Justice: 10 (both new abilities of this crew would be quite annoying to keep track of, especially a base move that could constantly change)

Might be able to get to the rest this week. Certainly some very unique game pieces! I recommend cleaning up some spelling errors (especially Captain) and trying to format the ability text to be more in line with what Wizkids had. (ex: “this ship” instead of “the ship”)

A strange find in my opinion for 2020… most of OE for $350.  For me, not quite worth it since most of the LE’s and the Zeus are missing.

Beware of eBay listings that appear to sell 24 packs of MI, but you only receive 1 pack.

When I get done with this set could someone help me with point values?

Post it in the Custom Ships thread and you should be able to get some feedback.

@Ben, I sent you a picture of one of my Custom Sets in progress. If you may take a look at it yourself I would appreciate advice.

I hope to have time for it soon.

I prefer Google sheets, especially since it can be shared without viewers needing to download anything.

is there a good point formula I can use for balance?

Some things like that have been created by some folks this year but I prefer to go based on feel, though that’s a lot easier with a lot of playing experience.

    You have self created ships?

Yeah it’s fun!  I think I’ve made at least 1600 total custom game pieces between Epic Seas and Age of Sail. (my two sets)

WordPress and postimages couldn’t handle the massive image files, but imgur allowed me to repost Custom Ships Organized Version as it appeared at Miniature Trading. 🙂  (except for the text being a little harder to read)

I bought some packs and I was wondering if you have any tips on how to build ships without scratching the paint on the hull when it goes through the first deck ?

Welcome back. 🙂  That’s a tough one. With the 4-5 masters, you might be able to angle the hull piece so it only makes contact with the deck on the same line that will be obscured by the edge of the deck (sticking out on the ship’s quarter) when fully constructed. (to try to avoid scraping the hull against the thinner part of the slot)  You could also widen the deck slots slightly before building, but that might not be worth it if the structural integrity is compromised. (too tight is better than too loose in this case, since with the latter the ship can become unusable)

    https://piratescsg.fandom.com/wiki/Keywords

    you don’t run this one?

Nope.  I don’t like to abbreviate or shorten every ability.  That page includes a massive number of unofficial keywords.  The ones I like to use are in the first tab of the Customs Database.

    It’s on your Keyword list.

    No it’s not.

    How could I check?

The American canoes are from Savage Shores, which you can find in the Master Spreadsheet.

At least fog banks and trade currents are super useful, so terrain isn’t a completely ineffective concept.

My favorite are actually whirlpools… as some people know.  😉

Do you know where the black market of ships is?

What I’m meaning is do you know where people are getting things like; the Scavenger Packs, the Plunder Packs, the sealed Booster Boxes, or the SCS Packs?

From what I’ve seen the past year or so, people are just overpaying (in my opinion, though I was lucky enough to collect in a buyer’s market ~2011-2014) for that stuff.  There’s a reasonable amount still out there on the obvious sites (eBay/Amazon/Hill’s Wholesale Gaming), it’s just that the prices have gone up.

People have posted some good deals this year, sometimes through local finds, FB Marketplace, and the occasional eBay find that goes for less than expected.

    How many are still active?

On any given day on the various Pirates CSG community hubs, probably 1 or 2 dozen.  Overall, most years see probably at least 100 people post comments/etc.  Possibly closer to 200.

a request for dull checklists including promos

Along with the Master Spreadsheet, I made a Buy/Sell/Trade version that doesn’t have abilities but fits your description of a “dull checklist”.

Random idea inspired by a pic at the FB group: Pirates CSG wrapping paper.  XD

I’m assuming someone has already come up with possible ideas for sandbars in the past

Yeah, I’ve used this from a Miniature Trading member a few times before (they were inspired by Cadet-Captain Mike):

When any part of a ship or sea creature moves onto a sandbar, roll a d6. The result is the sandbar’s rating until the end of that player’s turn. Compare the rating to how many masts or segments the game piece had when it was constructed. If the sandbar’s rating is less than the number of masts or segments, the game piece has run aground and might not be able to move.

For example, if a 3-mast ship sails over a sandbar with a rating of 4, she may continue her movement across it. If a 4-mast ship sails over a sandbar with a sandbar with a rating of 2, it must stop, even if she could move farther that turn. If the sandbar rating and the number of masts or segments are the same, the ship must stop after sailing over the sandbar, even if she could move farther that turn.

If a game piece has run aground, you can use its action for the turn to try to free it. Roll a d6. Subtract the current number of masts or segments or the result from whichever is higher. If the result is 1 or less, the game piece is free. It can be given a move action to move normally next turn.

(This is designed to be an obstacle similar to Sargasso Seas, but targeted for larger ships rather than smaller ships, and not damaging like a Reef)

At this point I don’t know if I’ve even had to deal with the rules for them yet since in my games ships just sail around them.  Most memorable time with a sandbar so far may have been when an opponent built Ramsgate on the largest one I’ve made.

    Ramsgate on sandbar

Today and tomorrow is the 3 year anniversary of starting Command the Oceans.  It lasted over 3 months and became the biggest recorded Pirates CSG game of all time.  If you haven’t checked it out yet, one idea I plan to do in the future is read each battle report on the calendar day it was originally posted.  For example, reading the rules and introduction post today, and then each battle report on the day it was posted, finishing on December 15th.  If you read the reports, that could be a good way of keeping it from being completely overwhelming.  😀

Goncalo Nunes’s last ability is in fact meant to be used off-island

I would make that more clear then, to make it so that ability can’t be used when the ship is repairing without the need of a shipwright (such as at the home island or a friendly fort).  If it’s meant to be used only at sea, that would have to be specified to avoid being able to use it at random wild islands.

Do you feel any of the ships/crew are under/overpowered?

Not if the point costs are adjusted a bit, as noted above.  Without making the changes, Madeira is underpowered and La Pinta might be OP, but most of them are okay.  Since I prefer not to recommend changing a creator’s ideas (sometimes it’s necessary of course, when things are absurdly OP), I like to simply adjust point costs.  It’s not always enough of a fix for some of the crazy stuff like I’ve made, but if something feels too good, I just increase the cost. (and if it’s still OP after that, changes can be made to things other than point cost)

@Mr. Wick: Neat custom set! 😀 Looking at point costs, here are some changes I’d recommend:
Madeira: 4 (considerably worse than the Coral from RV)
    Arguim: 4
    Ano-Bom: 4
La Pinta: 18 (looks like one of the best ships in the set!)
    Santa Clara: 14
Cabo da Tormentas: 8 (no cargo is a massive negative)
Sao Filipe: 18 (absolute powerhouse of a hybrid, looks extremely effective! 🙂 )
    Sao Marcos: 10
Sao Martinho could come down to 20-22 points in games under 100 points build total. Though I do like the higher cost for campaign games.
Native Canoes: 11-12 (canoes with more than 1 cargo each are extremely good)
    Guzmán: 9
    Vasco da Gama: 4
    Afonso de Albuquerque: 8

Sao Luis is a tough one to judge and a very interesting ship.
Goncalo Nunes is quite interesting. Is his final ability meant to only apply when NOT docked at his home island? (ex: from the Shipwright ability)
I like the touch of having a 0 coin on the oarsman card. 🙂
Any reason you put the 5 masters at the bottom of the ship section?
I would also delete the # signs from the non-linked pieces.
I see you took some liberties with the historical side of things, given that Alonso Pérez de Guzmán was from Spain. (him and the San Martin are LE’s for the Spanish in my Age of Sail set)

Would you like to have your own tab for the set in the Customs Database?

@All: If you had to pick just one, what is your absolute favorite custom ship you’ve made?

I think Conseil makes enough sense as-is.  You just wouldn’t use it on ships that don’t have a proper link.

@Mr. Wick: The spreadsheet is asking me to request access, so it looks like you need to make the link publicly available for everyone to see in order to share it properly.

Thinking this one will go for over $100.  My predictions have consistently been too low this year, so let’s say $465 then.  XD

Which led me to believe that a basic 1 masted ship with no ability text or ship type would cost roughly 3 points. So I started there, added the +1 for the Cog ability and then added additional points for the value of abilities I granted the ships.

I think the problem there is that speed and cargo are two of the most important attributes for any ship.  Size and abilities are part of what make up a vessel’s point cost, but there are a lot of factors.

I would say that for 1 masters, the cannon is disproportionately not as much of a factor in the cost, since even if it’s a 2L, it’s not likely to be used much or to cause much damage even if it does get used.  (versus a 5 master with all 4S guns or all 2L’s – massive difference)

@Mr. Wick: Whenever posting customs using custom keywords (or even unofficial abbreviations of Wizkids abilities), I recommend posting the keyword text so people don’t have to search for it.

In general I agree with Xerecs that they are probably a bit underpriced.  Cargo is quite valuable overall and should definitely factor into a ship’s point cost.  What is a “model bonus”?

Here are the point costs I would recommend for playtesting: Madre de Deus and Santa Catarina at 8, Sao Jao y Felix at 7.  I reckon their fragility and lack of “extremespeed” will prevent them from needing to be in double digits.  Though I haven’t played with Cogs of course, and Wizkids never released a 1 master with more than 4 cargo spaces. (which I like)

    Looking forward to more! 🙂

What’s the point cost of Parley and/or Secret Hold?

Generally Wizkids priced both at 2.  Parley had some variations with crew, sort of costing 1 on the SR version of Captain Mysion (Loyal being -1 is kind of unfathomable), but 3 on Damsel in Distress from PotC.  I prefer Parley at 3 but 2 still feels like a fair cost for it.
