Keymaster“Concept” Game with 3D Printed Ships, Wooden Ships, AND Wizkids Ships
(better to respond on that post than here)

KeymasterFinishing up Four Weeks In May by David Hart Dyke. Pretty good overall.

KeymasterI guess I already know the answer, but Titans can’t repair right?
The Titan keyword allows them to be assigned crew, and explicitly allows them to explore. However, not to repair.
From the Code:
-This list applies only when two or more abilities conflict. When an ability and a rule conflict the ability always takes precedence regardless of the terms used, unless specifically stated otherwise.
Sea creature rules say they can only be given move and shoot actions.
“A titan can be assigned crew.” – an ability!

KeymasterJust as a warning: don’t use “soft” PLA for printing Pirates CSG stuff – it comes out too soft and is very flexible!
Thanks to Todd C, I just printed out this 5 master from his files he shared! (I just scaled the z axis up to .9mm in Cura before slicing; the printed parts measure about .8mm)

KeymasterHere’s a big one: Ocean Terrain Contest #3.
Ben
KeymasterBecalmed affects native canoes normally, correct?
Reveal this event at the beginning of one of your turns and place its token anywhere on the play area (except on an island or a ship). No ship within L of the token may be given a move action unless she can move when derelict. Remove Becalmed from the game at the beginning of your next turn.
Also, can titans move over or on top of forts? The keyword just says they can move over islands. If they can, would there be any difference if the fort was friendly or not?
Ben
KeymasterThe classic 2011 facebook message from Lax Chandra thread. This one was quite the big deal for a while.
Ben
KeymasterIndeed, definitely the Sleigh and Whitebeard should stay banned.
I think it would be reasonable to ban anything with the ability CJS has. Or perhaps rewrite it or come up with a new (possibly similar) ability that would allow those few game pieces to have their point costs stay the same.
Ben
KeymasterThe Rankings are back! At least for now! 😀
Ben
KeymasterWhy cheerleaders aren’t useless. If it works out right, it’s like adding extra gunpowder or cannonballs to all the shots of an entire line of gunships! 😀
Ben
KeymasterIs Calypso’s ability supposed to be mandatory?
At the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a result of 4-6, instead of giving this ship an action, choose two whirlpools from outside the game. Put one L away from this ship and one L away from a wild island. Neither can be placed so that it touches any island or ship. This ship does not have to roll for effect when she uses a whirlpool.

KeymasterI kinda want 0/The Fool to stay wacky, kinda the Whitebeard of the group.
In that case, I recommend moving them to another part of the spreadsheet. No offense, but if people start looking at your custom set and the first two pieces are completely unplayable or entirely negative in nature, it might make it hard for them to take the rest of the set seriously.
And I think the Linked reword works, I left room for card effects to move crew while requiring the crew to be part of their ship.
The problem is, it’s a keyword only used on the ships. If you don’t use the ship with the keyword, the crew that is linked to that ship can simply be used however the player wants. Maybe that can work if that’s the intention, but it doesn’t solve potential issues like the Jack+Jill one I mentioned.
If the intention is to have all the linked pieces used with ONLY each other and never have those crew on unlinked ships, the crew need to have an ability saying “this crew can only be assigned to their linked ship” for example.

KeymasterThis podcast with Mike Selinker has some interesting info and questions asked! 😀 Just listened to it for the second time to refresh and still enjoyed it.
Ben
KeymasterDrua: This ship ignores terrain, except Trade Currents, when she is given a move action. This ship treats all Trade currents as friendly.
If you’re looking for a point cost estimate, I’d put this at 2 points. The regular ignoring terrain ability was never really worth 3 points in gameplay, and I don’t think the ability to use enemy trade currents is enough to warrant bumping this one to 3. (though it might be if your entire playgroup uses navigators all the time)
Will they be native canoes?

KeymasterWhere does the art for much of the series come from.
Vincent Dutrait did some of it for the later sets. Kian Ng (yes the crew in SCS is named after him) did some. From the BGG page you can see Sandra Garavito and Ethan Pasternack listed as the artists.
Is there a good place to find like an Pirates CSG art dump?
When I saved stuff from MT, I made sure to include all of the artwork from the database. 🙂

KeymasterDumb Question. Comparatively what are the rarity scales between Black (SR), Orange (LE,PR,ETC), and Green (PR, Special). Which are higher in terms of value by order of magnitude (i.e. Crew/Treasure/White -> Common -> Uncommon -> Rare -> X -> X ->X.
I think that’s actually quite a good question, especially since there isn’t really a good or “defined” answer. For example, the DJC SE’s (extremely common and easy to get) are green but so is the Obago Deuce, the rarest ship in the game. (and for a more reasonable comparison, even Sleigh/Whitebeard has just sold for over $90 twice recently)
Your question inspired me to republish this today from the old MT threads. It’s a rough guide but a great thing to read since it’s essentially the same topic.
For additional exceptions – SCS LE’s are extremely common and usually less expensive than SCS rares. However, RotF and F&S LE’s are some of the absolute rarest and most expensive cards in the game. It feels like every week someone talks about pulling an RotF SR pack. But plenty of people are still wanting the DJC or SCS SR’s by comparison. (which are worth much more based on eBay histories)
Quite frankly, it’s complicated and basically random. There are too many exceptions to establish a clear hierarchy of rarities. Even among distribution methods there are wild inconsistencies. Tournament pack LE’s were generally rare and expensive, but not for SCS. Special Edition box ships are generally quite common and not too rare, but MI is a notable exception to some extent. There are even some unpunched versions of SE box ships that are only in factory sets, which would almost definitely go for more money than the (super common) punched version of the same ships! XD 😀
Ben
KeymasterI think you missed a point value or two
Any game pieces I didn’t comment on or suggest a new cost for are fine as-is in my opinion.
Also what lore descriptions did you like best so far?
I only read a few since I was focusing on the point costs and gameplay aspects.
Even with the new wording, you can still use crew without the Linked keyword however you want if their ship is not in your fleet.
Do you know if 0 and The Fool will get a rework?
Ben
KeymasterIf anyone was wondering why the faction order for Epic Seas is completely different than my normal faction order (for collection organization and the Age of Sail set), it’s because I wanted to emphasize different factions for that set. The Cursed play a huge role, and the Mercenaries could realistically be second in the spreadsheet. However, things changed in that set over time and now it is almost random. Since I’ve subconsciously memorized the faction order in that specific set, I think I’ll just leave it as-is to avoid confusion over finding things.
Ben
KeymasterWow, nice! Even without the formatting, that’s really useful. Thanks!
Now that I’m using it a little to get Godmason’s customs in the Customs Database, I’m finding random errors. Sometimes full words or cannons are missing from a post, so it’s not nearly a perfect conversion even as far as the text goes. However, I converted one of the biggest screenshots (Custom Ships Organized Version) so perhaps the sheer volume is the reason for some of the errors.
Ben
KeymasterJust printed a test cube from this process and it happens to be the perfect size for a little fort, a building, or a coin deposit! You could even stack up coins and hide them underneath. (4 master for scale heh)

Ben
KeymasterGreat news: with google drive you can upload a picture that has text and open it with google docs to convert it to regular text. I just tried it with a capture of the original Custom Ships Organized Version thread (nearly 3MB with a ton of text) and it worked. Doesn’t preserve the formatting but at least an option.
Ben
KeymasterAmong other things there are full booster boxes of CC, RV, and BC!

KeymasterHave you heard of any new players that discovered Pirates or were introduced to it via Savage Shores?
I think I remember at least one member of the Facebook group getting into the game via SS. Though it may have been by chance last decade rather than when the set was still in stores.
It’s just interesting that RtSS has been known about for years now with a lot of the game pieces seeing play over time, while in fact we weren’t too far off from basically having 2 unreleased sets.
Ben
KeymasterSomething I thought of today: people have expressed considerable interest or enjoyment in the large-scale ships seen at the Minnesota RenFest and those from PDXYAR. 3D printed ships would be limited by the size of the print bed, but simply by upscaling the x, y, and z axis of each model, you could print ships of varying sizes. 😀 (some additional adjustments might have to be made to preserve durability and slot perfection)
Ben
KeymasterHere we go!!
After some various edits and testing, I have completed my first 3D printed ship!! O_O 😀 It’s rough around the edges and definitely not perfect, but I am extremely excited by the progress and look forward to more soon! 😀

Ben
KeymasterImportant to note that this was with NO settings adjusted on the printer, in the slicer, etc. I didn’t remember to even change the infill, so that’s why it’s a bit skeletal.

I was just glad that it fit, and I hadn’t botched the printer construction or setup to the point where the shape or scale was way off. Very exciting and promising!! 😀

Ben
KeymasterI have bought an Ender 3 V2! (affiliate link) It seems to be working well given my complete lack of knowledge about 3D printing. I have printed out a few test jib-style foremasts using Juulm’s files he shared. I am excited to make progress.
Question of the Day: Do you have a 3D printer? If not, do you plan on getting one?
Ben
KeymasterWelcome aboard Terry!
I would prefer to keep the game as close as possible to the original, but there might be many potential ways it could come back. I’ve wondered if simply not bringing it back as a collectible game could help with the longevity part.
Have you seen Woelf’s Pirates of Catan?
