With 4 cargo Divine Dragon can carry linked El Fantasma, helmsman, sir Edward and 2x oarsmen.

The link makes 5 spaces.  4 of those crew take up space, leaving one still open.

Who is “sir Edward”?  I thought you were talking about Sir Edmund from F&S.  Why would you need a reducer crew if you’re not even close to being over on points?

The Divine Dragon is actually my favorite ship to use him on normally, but that’s with OE Davy Jones + captain and helmsman.

What’s the most unlikely string of luck you’ve had in a game? I just had one where I got an extra action off of Admiral Morgan 6-7 times in a row, with no re-rollers. And I still lost lol.

    O_O  Nice.

Just this past turn in CG4, both the Pirates AND The Cursed got 6’s on their first roll attempts for an ability.  Sure only 2 rolls, but the magnitude of those rolls… beyond belief.  XD

I’m more prone to getting strings of bad luck.  In Economy Edition, the Black Mamba shot 0/6 including three 1’s to dismast herself without doing any damage to an enemy ship.

My 10 masters were AWFUL in the first games I used them in.  The Baochuan went 7/20 in a double action in a massive deathmatch despite having World Hater Chang Pao aboard.  This was only a few days after her and the Shui Xian combined to go 2/13 in a single turn of my RISK game.  Including HMS Grand Temple, famous junk ships seem to struggle mightily when they’re first introduced to my fleet.  We might see how some of my custom 10’s fare in CG4….

Most recently, the Monkey’s Paw shot horribly in Command the Oceans.  With all 3L’s you’d expect about 50% accuracy, especially with the number of shots she was able to make in that game.  She missed constantly and I wouldn’t be surprised if her accuracy in that game sat in the 20-33% range.

I assume that’s more of a deathmatch fleet?

A simple Divine Dragon setup with Fantasma, helmsman, and 3 oarsmen (or 4 since Fantasma links) should do well.  Hellfire is a solid “stock” or “numbers” gunship.  I love the Juggernaut actually, I think she is possibly more underrated than Hellfire.

RotF Hag wouldn’t stack on the Serpent’s Fang since the abilities are the same.

Given the above, and assuming it has the Cog keyword, I’d say that’s a 9-10 point ship

Agreed.  May seem high at first but cargo is very valuable and the Cog ability is quite good.

This was my initial idea behind the Cog ability, though I’m open to criticism and discussion over whether or not this is a good idea. You suggestion of making it be the cogs action instead only really hinders it by forcing the cog to sit for 1 turn with whatever cargo it gathered, making it fairly vulnerable for a 1 masted ship with no inherent defensive qualities, but I see that unhindered access to this ability could make them significantly valuable if the proper set up was achieved.

In that case, as a player I would want to try out a “cog chain” similar to the American native canoes and transport a lot of cargo over a big distance without actually needing a lot of ships to do so.  I’m not saying it’s OP (especially without having seen a custom ship with the ability yet), but I think the wording could be more clear.  Woelf is the master of that….

“Friendly ships within S of this ship can explore this ship as a free action, once per turn each.”  This is probably not optimal, but the best I can come up with right now.

Cog: Once per turn, a friendly ship within S of this ship may explore her as a free action. (I forgot equipment was a thing)

This may work, but the free action coming from outside the ship makes it prone to exploitation.  Example: Is the once per turn for each friendly ship exploring this ship?  Or once per turn that ONE friendly ship can explore the ship?  I assume you mean the latter, but when you base effects from outside of the game piece with the actual ability, you may invite additional issues.

I also must ask how a ship is priced point wise prior to having any extraneous effects.

I don’t have any formulas Wizkids used, and I’ve never seen any official ones.

Since then, I have then been learning all I can about the game. Thanks for creating this site and the podcasts Ben. I assumed it would be a hunt to find information on the game, but you have provided a wealth of it. Amazing job!

Welcome aboard!  And thank you!  😀

    Sorry of the long post.

    Don’t be.

These are interesting ideas.  I think the word you’re looking for is “lateen” sail.  Unless lanteen is an alternate spelling I’m not aware of.

The only improvements I would suggest are to the wording of the abilities.  It’s best to be as concise and clear as possible, while sticking to what Wizkids wrote so people can easily think about and identify the abilities.  For example:

Cog: “Once per turn this ship may explore a friendly ship within S of her as a free action.” (unless you need a clause about no equipment transfers)

Carrack: “When this ship reaches her cargo limit, she gets +S to her base move.”

and last but not least @Ben, have you ever tried putting the shell on the Titan Crabs the other way?

I’ve done it both ways at this point.  I think I like it better the “wrong” way at this point because it makes more sense to me.  I also seem to remember it not working as well from a constructible standpoint but I can’t remember which way.

Hopefully this map will help!  This is something that has been discussed in the community various times over the years, and I just recently stumbled into making one.

Feel free to add your location with your username (real name if you want, probably shouldn’t be an exact address of course).  I think you should also be able to add a description with contact info. (could just be your profile page URL here)

Once per turn when this ship hits an enemy ship, also eliminate one crew from that ship.

The ability shown above is  3 Points

    But it’s not.  It’s 2 points.

1: Is there a comprehensive (or moderately so) guide to the creation of custom ships/crew/etc. point wise?

No.  The first tab of the Customs Database has a bit of what I often price certain abilities at.

2: Is the custom thread a good place to post new ship type ides for review by experienced players?

    Definitely.  The best place!  😀

I have started a new Category called Miniature Trading Forum Threads where my plan right now is to post one old thread per day from what I have saved.  Each actual post (that is the first one) will be full width with no sidebar, so it will make the text as large as possible and almost look like you’re scrolling through MT.

I know I’ve already shared these in GDrive and Imgur through the Saved from MT post, but this way they’ll be directly represented on my site with the images easily visible, with a site post title that matches the old thread title for easier searchability and hopefully easier viewing.

Holofernes and Woelf both said they have not seen this before… which means to me that it’s a true mystery.  Anyone know what it’s from?  Maybe that “Terror Trials” was a tournament at a con?

I know at least @Ben kinda hates MI but I love it.

Just like with the factions, I “like” all the sets at this point.  Feelings of frustration have severely dimmed over time.  🙂   MI to me has drab artwork in a lot of cases (at least for the ships), mediocre ships, and not a ton to get excited about.

The early sets appear to be based off realistic or fictional regions of the ocean during the age of sail, so what area of the ocean is the crimson coast, judging by the addition of the French I assume the cajun south of america.

I can’t recall but I remember the flavor text for CC helping out with that.

Not to be bothersome, but are there additional “keywords” some people use for longer abilities that aren’t on the list.

I agree with that in general, but not with your specific examples.  I can explain.  🙂

HI Raiders could probably just have the keyword “Raider”, for example.

This makes me think of any ability that steals gold.  I know that Filching Gold and Hoard/Hoarding Gold already have keywords, but things like “UT Hoard” and “randomly take as much treasure as this ship can carry” do not.  Raider is very generic.  The HI part in front helps to distinguish it, and also helps to separate it from what I call “HI Hoard” (steal as much treasure as you can from an enemy HI, rather than just 1 coin at a time).

(This ship ignores the first his she takes as long as she has all her masts)[Ironsides],

In the past I have seen “Ironsides” used to describe the Acorazado’s 2 hits/mast ability.  It’s too long for my liking, but “Ignores First Hit” would clear up confusion a lot better.

(This ship cannot be shot at by ships within S of her)[Agile]

How would you distinguish this from L-immunity? (L-range cannons cannot hit this ship.)

(After this ship resovles a shoot action, she may move as a free action/Reverse-captain)[Swift]

Swift implies a speed boost of some kind.  Reverse Captain is extremely logical (the reverse or opposite of Captain) and is one of the least likely to ever be “changed”.

I hope you see what I mean.  🙂   Many more abilities could have keywords or shortened text, but it’s not worth it if it just confuses people.

Wizkids did have more ability names when they made things, but I’m glad that some of them didn’t make it into the official game text (for similar reasons).

    I Don’t know how much this ability is but I’d say that it’s about 10 points;
Once per turn, One ship within S of this ship cannot use it’s abilities this turn.
This ship gains that ship’s abilities for this turn.

That sounds quite powerful.  Are the opposing ship’s abilities cancelled for the user’s turn only, or for the whole round that would include the enemy ship’s turn?

How the heck are you supposed to make use of the Fear keyword?

Moved your post here since it’s appropriate.

It’s not a good ability, but it can be better while submerged.  In that case it could be combined with other abilities that work while submerged, such as cancelling or Marines.  Other than that, make sure to always remember to roll for it when you have multiple enemies in range.  If you can roll for it 3+ times in a turn, there’s a solid chance it will actually affect something.  Though that happens more in crowded battlefields and campaigns than most 1v1 action.

I would suggest a reroller, but EA/SAT/etc are better abilities to pair a reroller with anyway lol.  Those are the best ways I can think of – try to scare a bunch of enemies at the same time in a crowded space, and/or submerge it so it can possibly survive longer to have more of an effect.  The latter is one of the reasons (along with cost) that Squalo is the one shark I do try to use on occasion.

@Ochobrazo2298: I’m not a big fan of the Limit keyword (especially as a way to “curb” customs when it’s not that much of a restriction), and I’m trying to limit my use of it as much as possible. 🙂

    Some fixes to consider:
Make it function more like a normal tow-capture, just slightly more efficient. Make it so the opposing ship has to be derelict (or least mastless), so you can’t grab ships that would otherwise still be capable of fighting back. That skips waiting until the next turn, which doesn’t fundamentally change what happens when you capture the ship (compared to moving and towing it on your next turn), but it reduces the time an opponent has to intervene, and it’s getting rid of the requirement of touching the ship’s bow, both of which are nice non-game-breaking benefits.

I wanted Bellamy to be superior to my version of Bartholomew Roberts, who has the ability you describe.  I think I will change his ability to that of Black Bart and give him Captain.  It is a good point about him being on a 10 master and being able to capture ships at will… and he would probably be on a 10 master.  XD  I also just realized something that I should have thought of sooner – S-boarding and/or grapple shot would just make it that much more broken.  Yikes!

    Thanks for the feedback! (x3)

Given all the feedback, this is the new version for 10 points: Captain.  This ship can tow a ship by touching a derelict in any location (not just the bow), and can immediately initiate towing after resolving any action.

It was a straight up fight to the death, I think Woelf’s fleet won the challenge.

Woelf and I were co-winners; I hosted the challenge afterwards because Woelf had hosted the RtSS challenge before lord_denton’s challenge.  I think “canon” is the word you’re looking for.

I based a lot of my continued lore on fleet challenges or miniature reviews that I liked on MT.

Neat, I don’t remember knowing that before.

Also, it would stand to reason that he is at least spiritually based on a Haitian president from the 50-70’s nicknamed “Papa Doc.”

Given the age of this game, I’d like to think that at least purposeful cheating at it is a non-issue at this point. Maybe not?

    Definitely not!  XD

I was asking for CG4.  I double checked a couple of the new 10 master setups to make sure they’re fine, but I might just reveal at least one of them in the next battle report anyway, partly for kicks and also for intimidation purposes.  XD

If the UT is one that must be revealed when loaded, it would be flipped back up as soon as it was placed on the new ship.

In that case it wouldn’t take up cargo space once it was face up… so technically you can use Barrel o’ Monkeys to your advantage where the transferred coin does not ever take up cargo space, correct?  (Ex: If a ship had a full cargo hold and got to take a face up UT via the monkeys, can they take it?  Or does that split second where it’s supposedly face down make that impossible?)

Can an opponent request or force you to reveal face down crew on a setup with a reducer to prove that it’s legal?

If you need the reducer’s ability to make the ship legal during setup, you have to reveal it during setup. That ability won’t function if it’s face down.

I know the reducers have to be face up; my question was if you had to reveal OTHER crew that the reducer is allowing aboard, to prove that the setup is legal.  Ex: The Stump is face up as he has to be.  He allows a bunch of extra crew aboard.  An opponent wants to check the crew on my ship to prove the setup is legal.  Am I required to reveal the rest of the setup (in addition to The Stump) to prove I’m not cheating?

it does prevent a whole pile of weird issues with certain ability interactions and timing.

Interesting, I haven’t thought of those possibilities then.

Somehow I sense too many free actions. Maybe make the cargo transfer not optional, you transfer all you can, and the rest is lost.

Interesting way to think about it.  It’s part of my historical set so I would prefer to let some cargo stay aboard for realism. (in real life I think it would be much more convenient to keep everything aboard)  Perhaps I’ll make it so none of the cargo from the captured ship can be transferred freely to the towing ship.  Thanks for the feedback!

Also Whydah is Cursed… So Sam should be too.

I have updated the link to say “Whydah Gally”; that ship is a Pirate historical custom (currently row #566) from the same set, Sam Bellamy isn’t designed to link to the Wizkids version of the Whydah.

What/who exactly are the Loa? Do they have any connection with Davy Jones or El Fantasma?

There is almost nothing about the Loa in Wizkids flavor text.  Papa Doc’s original flavor text always seemed incredibly sinister and mysterious to me, which is why the Loa became one of my biggest fascinations within the flavor text of the game.  I don’t see any connection with Davy Jones or El Fantasma.

Lately I have been inspired to finally bring the Loa into the game.  O_O  After a long period of me giving occasional hints as to Loa customs and how they might appear, going back to MT I’m pretty sure.  Which should scare anyone who plays against me.  Back in May, it was announced that The Cursed not only harnessed the power of the Loa, but brought them to their side…  some of them are already in my Epic Seas set, and more are to come….
