KeymasterBefore slipping off into retirement
@CaptainHawkins: Not so fast there laddie, you’ve been hired! What do you think your next mission on your ship, the Warring Tribes, will be?Ben
KeymasterI’m Personally not sure what cost this ship is
I would say 3 points; there shouldn’t be any “free” game pieces because then there’s no reason not to include it in every fleet. (unless it truly is a net-zero effect)
Ben
Keymasterlol, if the cursed get their way and some of their stuff falls into line it’ll be “Mommy I don’t feel good….”
🙂 I told you it was going to get MORE nuts!! XD
Ben
Keymaster“Mommy I broke it.” XD LOL!
BREAKING THE GAME | + A Global Biological Terrorist Attack Threat
Ben
Keymaster@Woelf: Why does Barrel o’ Monkeys require you to load the transferred UT face down even if the UT transferred is normally always a face up UT?
Can an opponent request or force you to reveal face down crew on a setup with a reducer to prove that it’s legal?
Ben
Keymaster@Ben, How much do you think Unholy Light costs?
3
Ben
Keymaster@Bartek: Welcome aboard matey!! 😀
And Ben’s site is great.
Thank you so much!!
Ben
KeymasterAnd by the way @Ben how do you post ships on the Customs Database?
Once you have a custom set you can send it to me for review. At that point I could make a sheet in the database that only you (and I by default) can edit.
I can’t believe I don’t think I’ve seen a custom of this before!
Megalodon
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: U
Type: Sea Creature
Point Value: 14
Number of Masts: 2
Cargo Space: 3
Base Move: S+L
Cannons: 1S-1S
Ability: Sea Monster. Cargo Wrecking. Horror.
Cargo Wrecking: When this ship hits an enemy ship, you may also eliminate one cargo from that ship.
Horror: For each enemy ship within S of this ship at the beginning of this ship’s turn, roll a d6. On a result of 3-6, one of the enemy ship’s crew (chosen by the controller of that ship) cannot use their abilities on their turn.Flavor text: Long rumored to be an extinct species of giant shark, Megalodon skeletons have been collected by the Skull Reaper and reanimated by Valmung.
You can find my custom sets in the Customs Database.
Ben
KeymasterI realize I’m not going to win this argument, but I have a bone to pick with the rules. 🙂
The sea creature rules state that sea creatures cannot be assigned crew.
Ex-Patriot
This crew may use its abilities onboard any ship.
The Pirate Code, page 5:
Sea creatures are considered to be ships. Any actions, abilities, or other effects that refer to ships can be applied.
Pirate Code page 15:
-This list applies only when two or more abilities conflict. When an ability and a rule conflict the ability always takes precedence regardless of the terms used, unless specifically stated otherwise.
If abilities take precedence over rules, then Ex-Patriot crew should be able to use their abilities on sea monsters that have cargo. Boom. XD 😉
(Woelf’s Asesino de la Nave arriving shortly to kill my crew idea XD)
Ben
Keymaster@Ochobrazo2298: Neat kraken! I like the base move especially to set it apart from the others.
@All: My custom sets are primarily found at the Customs Database from now on; my sets on their original sheet may become out of date for now. Once I’m done with batches of new customs in the main Database I hope to/might update the sheet that just has my sets.

KeymasterThe fleet above is why I’m happy to see posts to this thread. I don’t know if I’ve ever put anything other than a helmsman and maybe an oarsman on the Artesien. That linked combo is very cool because it fills out the ship’s point cap space while still saving room for 3 open cargo spaces. The cancelling is a great thing to have on a gold runner for deterrence. I’m used to “power gaming” setups with great gold runners like the Artesien, so I’m glad you came up with a more creative way to crew her.
Nice use of Gaspar Zuan on the Santiago, but it looks like that ship is one over on cargo space. I’m seeing 5 total spaces but 6 crew that take up a space since the second oarsman doesn’t stack. I would probably drop the cannoneer and maybe even add helmsmen to the Amity and Deliverance (swapping out the shipwright on the latter).
Ben
KeymasterAs is often the case, I made a post about this. I haven’t had many OE cards as bad as you describe though.

KeymasterNow I’m confused again. In game 2 between the French fleet and the UPS one, it ends with the Sea Crane establishing the Devil’s Maw. But France can still move. La Courageux is actually a nightmare for the Devil’s Maw to deal with because she can just sit so only one short gun of the fort is in range and fire with impunity. How come the game ended with the fort being built?
A good question! I think the reason Xerecs and I stopped playing at that point is because of the extreme odds against the Courageux. All 3 Pirate ships may have been able to ram and/or fire at her before she got to either of the Pirate forts. In addition, the Devil’s Maw also has three 3L guns, so it’s unlikely the Courageux would have been able to destroy the fort without taking a reasonable beating in return, especially with other Pirate ships there to assist the fort.
There may be other reasons behind it as well; not everything discussed on the module or said between the players is in every battle report. It looks like we should have kept playing. That said, I’m kind of glad the Quick fleet won that matchup overall or else I might feel weird about it. (as I said though, there is likely something else that led to the game ending “early” for good reason, and probably a gameplay reason)
Ben
KeymasterNot sure if this question goes here but here goes. I’ve noticed a few “unofficial” keywords when describing semi-common abilities, like “Fog-hopper”. If at all possible is there some kind of general list of unofficial keywords of the like.
Once upon a time there was a thread with all of the common abbreviations, acronyms, and such. I think that was back at Miniature Trading, but Ben may have saved it.
The Information and Stats page of the main menu is my continuation/expansion of that.
You can also check out the first tab of the Customs Database. That does get into a lot of custom keywords though as you scroll down.
That’s… distressing. At least the rules apparently changed so I feel less bad about not understanding, but forts are suddenly much less powerful now for me. I feel like they lead to a lot more games ended by stalemate then.
@Jack: Check out VASSAL Tournament #2 for plenty of battle reports on fort strategy and situations, especially in competitive 1v1 games. Sometimes it takes a while to play a game out to full completion, but it generally shouldn’t end in a tie.
Ben
KeymasterThere are plenty of references though to a main plot, scattered all over the game but no source that really ties it all together. I’ve done some searching online and I can’t seem to find any real source of official Pirates lore either.
Maybe putting together the different pieces of flavor text and lining out the story would be a fun project, who knows?
I assume you’ve seen the Master Spreadsheet? Flavor text for all the game pieces is to the right of the ability text column. There is some extra stuff in the Adventure Book.
Godmason started this wiki that looks almost exactly like what you describe.
Ben
KeymasterBunch of solid auctions up… including both island/terrain sets, PotC SR pack, kraken lot, and some of the PotC SE ships.
Ben
KeymasterSomewhat soon I will probably become much busier with the Navy and therefore won’t be nearly as active as usual (again). However, that may not quite be the case. Either way, I should actually be MORE active over the next few weeks, so I’m looking forward to getting a lot of stuff done. 😀
Ben
KeymasterI’m sure I have the original file kicking around somewhere along with “The Resurrection” set as well. I’ll take a peek and let you know. It might be a fun project to clean up and continue with some of the old ideas I had.
Most excellent!
I did also notice you made a comment on the original site asking about the “Admiral” keyword. From what I can guess it looks like I combined the helmsman and captain abilities into one, less wordy, evergreen keyword.
Hmm. Woelf has advised against putting keywords within keywords because it needlessly complicates things. I assumed Admiral would be either the Admiral’s Action (AA) ability seen on Commodore Edward Preble from BC, or Lord Mycron’s ability.
Ben
KeymasterGhost ships are actually ideal for ramming and boarding situations like this.
You mean to stay ghostly until you need to board?
Meanwhile El Puerto Blanco was established on an island near the pirate base, with the plan being to use the Bahama to ferry gold there from the pirate HI.
Nice! I don’t know if I’ve thought of that before. Makes me want to try it!
Very nice report!
Ben
KeymasterLittle did I know I’d stumble onto this gem of a website, Ben you really have worked a wonder here! Even some of the old forum threads seem to have been preserved or at least continued.
Huzzah! Welcome back aboard matey!! I want to say I also remember you participating in some of the Mercenary/submarine debates on MT with captain_nemo and mercenary30.
If you want to see a bunch of stuff from MT and go down memory lane, almost everything I saved from that site should be available here. There is a folder with quite a few thread topics. I definitely wanted to continue some of the most important or classic threads from MT, and at some point I will probably bring back some of the others.
That’s what ultimately led me here and I’m stoked to dust of those old miniatures stashed away somewhere!
Nice! Feel free to post to the collection thread.
You can find the most important rules and documents on the homepage of my site at the bottom. (you can just click the site title or icon at the top left)
Ben
KeymasterOh wow I think that was 12 year old me! I had totally forgotten about that haha. Looking back I definitely could have used a spell checker….
Holy crap he’s back!! O_O 😀
I have some questions about the set if you have time at some point. Mainly with formatting – a lot of game pieces have higher costs than they should, because it looks like a lot of abilities got moved to the bottom of the page.
Do you have a more finalized version of the set? I actually just released the Customs Database; your set(s) could be part of that if you wanted!
Also, do you now if “The Resurrection” set was completed? Thanks!!
Ben
KeymasterThe Raven’s Neck is a decent ship to attempt it with, but it’s just a poor ability in general. I price it at 1 point instead of 3 on my customs.
The problem is that you have to know you’ll make some kind of profit from the trade. It becomes essential to know what the other ship has, though you could try to trade a 1 for anything you might get in return (of course, you could still get a 0 coin lol).
What’s more interesting in my opinion is trying to use the ability with UT’s. For example, from Woelf’s Rum Bomb idea (in the zip folder) you can trade Rum to an opponent to freeze their ship for a turn. (potentially allowing you to steal their entire ship and thus get the Rum back so it’s not gone XD)

KeymasterAt long last, here it is: the Customs Database!
With many creators contributing to add their custom sets, we now have a location for most of the customs currently available for Pirates CSG in one place! Some of the sets are still works in progress so keep that in mind! However, there are multiple thousands of customs to choose from and use!! O_O 😀

Keymaster@Woelf: Do you know why there doesn’t appear to be a shark building guide in the Start Here rules for OE? Maybe Wizkids just forgot, or assumed people wouldn’t need a guide for it?
Ben
KeymasterSo besides Pirate, What other Games do you play? Like Card or Table top or Role playing?
To probably nobody’s surprise, almost nothing nowadays. My intense obsession with Pirates has made me a one-trick pony, and I’m happy about it. 😀 XD
In the past (often 10+ years ago) I enjoyed Pokemon, Yugioh, Monopoly, Spades, and some others. I think the only non-Pirates board games I’ve played in the past ~5 years have been Ticket to Ride and Merchants and Marauders, along with one game of a basic version of Settlers of Catan earlier this year.
Ben
KeymasterThis means that a silver coin unloaded to your HI from the Song is worth +4 gold, since I do not believe any of these value buffs count as duplicates, since they’re all different. The downside is obviously that you only have one cargo spot left on the boat. I imagine you could try doing something like using the Banshee’s Cry to collect the gold at the nearest island and just ferry the gold over to her.
It’s definitely legal, and a pretty cool combo. It was done pretty much to perfection by darrin in UPS 4.0 – Silver Crane. A fleet that Xerecs and I used in VASSAL Tournament #2. The key is to use CJS to fling one coin at a time to the Sea Crane (better ship with the same ability) so you can max out bonuses.
The Song has 4 cargo, so you would have 2 spaces available in your setup. However, that would go to 1 if you added a helmsman to make the redocking combo used with CJS.
Ben
KeymasterWhat is going on?? Stuff going for 3x+ original MSRP.
Ben
Keymasterok but if u sac a crew and place the ghost crew fort at the same time
can you use that crew again?
These things wouldn’t happen at the same time – the Sac ability would happen while playing your turn and the crew would stay eliminated as normal. Forts are only built at the end of your turn.
Ben
KeymasterShorter print?
This is the most common I’m aware of. I can actually vouch for it a bit too, since I did buy packs of BC and DJC SE boxes back in the day, but I can’t recall seeing SCS and I know I didn’t buy any. (there is a chance I just didn’t go to the store when it was there, but it doesn’t seem like it was there long)
