KeymasterCould you update your rules thread to mention this thread, and its purpose.
Good point, I’ll add a note.
Also sticky this to the top.
I think the stickies are fine as-is.

Keymaster@Dakmor: Moved to this thread to keep the forum clean of having a lot of the same type of threads lying around. Nice pictures!

KeymasterWell good luck, man…I truly hope you find something special during your time. Truly honored to hopefully be part of one of your bon voyage games! Fair winds and following seas, my friend.
Thank you! Indeed, it should be a fun time in LV.
Ben
KeymasterOur official count is actually up to 353 unique ships as of this last weekend! Just got our first Viking ships, completed South China Seas, and about 4 ships away from finishing up Spanish Main! Again, sorry for the confusion with the post, but have been happy to be part of the scene the last few weeks!!!
It’s my fault for not realizing what was going wrong on the back end. That is a lot of ships! SCS and SM are two of the best sets, so it sounds like you’re building quite the epic collection!
My screenname is Dakmor and I was a member of Pojo & Miniature Trading.
Awesome to see you here. I’ll always remember you as the first person that responded to any of my Pirates CSG posts/content.
Indeed, that swarm fleet has quite the history now, including the game after T2.

KeymasterI am saving all the pages of the main menu at the Internet Archive in case the site ever goes down for no good reason. 😀

KeymasterBack in June 2019 right before the fall of Miniature Trading, I did make the fleets I talked about in my post from March 2nd. Here they are:
American Pirates 2
American Pirates 3
American Pirates 4
American Pirates 5
French Pirates
Pirate All StarsAt some point in the future I may write descriptions for the fleets and make them into full posts for the Fleets category. Feedback welcome of course.
Ben
Keymasteralso, I feel like this may help to explain the ability
It does, just kind of funny to wrap your head around. 🙂
The new pieces look fair. Is the Red Dragon designed to shoot at friendly Pirate ships? If not, the ability is unnecessary.

KeymasterWith only game pieces from the Barbary Coast booster set available, which pieces should I try to snatch away in the draft to have a good shot at winning?
This is perfect: Top 10 Barbary Coast Game Pieces. The Tiger’s Eye and the numerous cheap Corsair galleys (especially the 6 pointers) are extremely good. A few of the cancellers won’t apply because they didn’t come in the packs. The links to MT may work in the Internet Archive, but the game pieces are in the Master Spreadsheet.
That’s a cool idea, and a ton of rounds and packs!
Ben
KeymasterSaberhook is awesome, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such a unique Scorpion!
I do think that putting the faction affiliation for each and every game piece is ideal. Until the end of the post I didn’t know what faction any of them were. I think the Coastal Ranger’s ability could be switched to non-Pirate.
Love the Setekh. Flavor is interesting too, Cursed treasure vaults? Empire? 🙂
Ben
KeymasterSolid lot here with set and rarity variety.

KeymasterThe Rye is physically a galley, but lacks the Keyword. Would that technically make her not a galley and therefore able to ram other ships?
That’s something I’ve never understood properly; I just play them as they look to avoid confusion and wondering which have the keyword and which don’t. The Code has some info on page 16.
Ben
KeymasterHmmmm. I’m kind of all the above.
I’ve been nearly all kinds of players at various points over the years. I think you and I are two of the only people to play that can say “all of the above”. 🙂 With enough sheer volume of games it’s nearly inevitable.
October 30, 2019 at 6:19 AM in reply to: Nastiest 1 master in the game? Hessian is underrated. #10032Ben
KeymasterHMS Rye isn’t nearly as good offensively as the Hessian because as a galley she can’t do damage by ramming and her cannon isn’t accurate, but the Rye is still quite nasty for a 1 master. My ideal setup for her (especially in campaign games) is helmsman, shipwright, oarsman. This allows her to move at a blazing speed of 4S, repair her lone mast (very vulnerable to ramming) at sea, and delay capture with the oarsman. (the latter is important because capturing a canceller and towing it around can be one way to flip a battle on its head if used optimally) Even without a mast, the Rye could row around at S+S as a non-captureable ship that cancels key enemy abilities in a firefight.
As an otherwise unremarkable SCS LE, the Rye is sort of an English secret weapon unlike their main canceller (Lawrence from BC), though not so secret anymore after extensive campaign game play.
Oh, and she makes for a solid English gold runner when empty too! (or nearly empty; oarsman still recommended)
Ben
Keymaster@Woelf: Strictly as a matter of opinion, do you think that ships should be able to tow other friendly ships that are dismasted but have oarsmen?
With the Oarsman keyword as it stands now, it sounds like that would be illegal since the rules say you can only tow derelicts. However, I think having the option of using the oars is more realistic. I’m rereading the BR’s for CG1 and I think some of the English ships did more towing than rowing.
I also wish you could scuttle with no masts remaining, regardless of technical derelict status.
Ben
KeymasterThis thread has given me the motivation to make the Cursed pieces from my custom set as horrifying as possible, so thanks for starting this discussion, Ben.
Cool! The Executioner is definitely one of the nastiest. The Cursed are the most numerous faction in my fantasy custom set. Feel free to share your new customs in the prominent thread here.
Ben
KeymasterPerhaps replacing SAT with that ability to off-load cargo from within S of your HI? Would that be better, and would it affect his current point cost drastically?
Sounds good; in that case I think 4 points would be good.
Ben
KeymasterNormally Pirates get discounts on crew and whatnot, I would say this is one exception where he should cost more than the sum of his abilities.
Thank you for admitting that; that’s exactly what should happen. Helmsman+SAT is not a combo that should really exist on crew due to how absurdly awesome it is. I priced SAT at 5 in my Total Recosting, but even bumping this guy to 7 probably wouldn’t affect how much he’s used.
I think Blackburn could be 4 or 5 points. I like BA at 3, and not taking up space isn’t worth too much.
These crew really illustrate how off some of the WK prices are. In terms of ACTUAL in-game value, I would potentially pay 10 points for Mr. Nautilus, and likely only 3 for Blackburn. If you look at how good each ability is, these crew are pretty much on opposite ends of the value spectrum.
Ben
KeymasterDid something go wrong with Event costs?
Yup, Wizkids massively underpriced many of them. XD I guess I’m overcorrecting, but I can’t help it. I’m fine if people want to make their own recostings or edit mine for their own usage. I just hate certain events too much to not make them obsolete, because I feel that they should never have existed.
Ben
Keymaster@JW: I like the Neverland and would love to use her. Given the costs of the Intrepid (15 points for a better gunship) and others, I think the cost is fine.
I didn’t realize that Armed Merchant can be used in addition to shooting, for basically an extra shot each time the ship shoots. I’m not sure if that should be more clearly stated in the keyword text, or if I’m just not thinking about it optimally. It’s possible I’ve been underrating the ability, since you could use it like a reverse captain too. Hmmm….
Ben
KeymasterShall I assume that this is limited to WizKids pieces?
I wasn’t thinking about customs when I posted it, but go ahead. Makes it pretty easy to have a lot of nasty flavor text; some of mine is arguably offensive, but that’s what you get with a faction like The Cursed….
Ben
KeymasterOne initial thought – I think it would be really helpful to have an additional column next to your revised costs showing the original WK point values, to make it a lot easier to see the adjustments in context and make useful comparisons.
Thanks for the feedback. Just implemented that change in most cases. (sometimes the spreadsheets don’t overlap since I deleted some rows for the TC)
I actually didn’t do that with the first page because so many of those abilities costed different amounts for different game pieces, and there are some that I don’t know the official cost of.
Now that I did that it’s funny to see some of the dramatic swings in point costs. Especially on some of the later sets. XD If someone wanted to, they could calculate which sets were the most overpriced or underpriced by totaling up the differentials. Though I don’t think the results would be very surprising, which F&S likely leading in the “most overpriced” category. I could also do the average cost difference per set, and per game piece in each set. (for example, perhaps each RV game piece is underpriced by 1.4 points, while RotF could be overpriced by 2 points)
That does make me think a little… I’ve never totaled up point costs by set.
