Noticing some annoying glitches that may have something to do with the latest update to WordPress, but I’m not sure what’s causing them.  If a page takes forever to load, I’ve found that hitting the “stop loading” button (X at upper left of Chrome browser for me) and then reloading it works to get the page up properly.  If that’s for a forum post, make sure to copy the text from your post before reloading.  In this way, often when I reload the thread, my post appears there normally without having to hit Submit again.

Also noticing that the profile notifications at the upper right are not disappearing after going to a new forum post from threads I’m subscribed to.  I’ve been manually deleting the notifications by clicking the number rather than just the dropdown with the post link.

I hope to look into these issues but I cannot guarantee that I’ll have time.

My guess is that discord would be the best option since you could use the pirates community there to pull from. I know lots of people use It to live stream multiplayer games with multiple people chatting at once.

Thanks, I think I will try that first.  At least one of the podcasts this year was in the voice channel there, so hopefully people could jump in and out easily.

For my final podcast of the year and Pirates CSG Podcast #50, I want to finally do a live “call-in” podcast.  (similar to the Pirates Online radio show hosted by RedDragon and Captain Ron)

Does anyone know the best way to do this?  Options I see would be the Discord voice channel, Google Voice, or No Cost Conference (have not tried the latter two).

I think Raphael Santiago could be 6 points.  Though in your group I guess BA is worth more since it always seems to hit….

Once per turn, when this ship is hit by an enemy ship, you may eliminate a mast from the attacking ship.

This seems like it’s begging for problems.  Might be better if the initial hit was scored only on a 2-4; 5-6 could be hits too direct for Fray to “retaliate”.

Wrecks block lines of fire, correct?

in reply to: The Podcast Thread #10221

I have used the shipwreck style of play where ships are left on the board when they sink. That is likely my favorite.

Are all of the “sunken” ships available just as regular (reefed) shipwrecks would be? (for exploration/blocking/etc)

Cannot think of any significant downfalls at the moment but I’m sure it will negatively impact certain Keywords and abilities.

I think the main issue is timing – for example, would a “cargo wrecker” (Kian Ng) eliminate cargo immediately, or is that damage dealt after both sides have exchanged their shots? (which could matter immensely if your only cargo was a World Hater crew for example)  There would have to be clear rules on when each event/roll/effect happened.

Most of the time the difficulty comes with determining order of effect/play. Which ability applies first or when. So nothing specific just figuring out how to implement various keywords.

😀  As if on cue.  XD  I agree to a certain extent, especially with Unique Treaures, which can be a nightmare if you get a ton at once and some abilities conflict with each other.

Overall really enjoyed the various new podcasts. I found myself 3 podcasts behind suddenly and was eager to catch up. I think the podcast with Tony Vigil may be one of my new favorites. There was a lot of excellent gameplay talk and obvious passion in the conversation. Also I learned so many new and exciting ideas for games to play now.

Great Job Ben, keep it up!

Thanks a ton!  I loved the episode with Tony Vigil as well, definitely a classic.   I wanted to finish the year strong with the podcast, and I think I’ve done that between the recent episodes, another upload coming today, and hopefully a call-in podcast if I can get that figured out soon.  😀

Awesome, thanks Woelf!  Interesting that a submerged ship with that ability could shoot through a nearby submerged ship to shoot at another submerged ship.  XD

During a shoot action, when drawing a line of fire to an opposing ship, continue that line of fire to see if it can touch an additional opposing ship within range. If it does, on a roll of 6 eliminate one cargo from that second ship after doing normal damage to the target ship. On any cannon roll of 1, eliminate that cannon and remove this equipment from the game.

Yes; that is better, thank you!

@JW: Milano and Nova look neat!  Doom Viper is a bit too extreme for my taste, though the beginning of turn restriction is a good way to limit the ability.

I’m a lifetime gamer who played Pirates a bit when it released, and even ran a few events at the game store I worked at at the time.

That is awesome!  Feel free to tell any stories of those Pirates events if you want. (this thread would be the best place I think)

Every time I get on this site to do research I’m impressed by the passionate fanbase, the helpful people, and the lack of infighting that is so common on most other game sites.

Glad to hear that!  Welcome aboard.

    Looks like fun! 🙂

But I think you should maybe switch “cannons” and “lines of fire”; to me that would just sound a little better and less confusing.

The problem is getting a wording that implies that the ship is shooting through another ship.  Someone could interpret it to mean a ship at point blank range, and another on the other side of the ship that is in range but further away.  Made that change and added “in a straight line” for now.

I don’t think they’re very broken or even overpowered.  I’m skeptical that “Extra” would see much usage at 2 points (as opposed to a firepot specialist, cannoneer, or combination of shot equipment for the same price), and “Max” only works in a very specific situation on 6’s, and still has a bad drawback on 1’s.

Love the names and flavor of the new stuff.  Eclector would be fun to optimize.

I’m considering giving the Dark Aster the Lord Algernon ability instead of what she has now; but I’m still kinda on the fence about it.

From her flavor text it sounds like she could have Filching Gold or home island raiding; swapping defensive abilities would allow for one or both of those to be added without increasing the point cost.

Thanks for the feedback.  Here is where they stand now:

    Extra Powder
    Equipment
    Point Cost: 2
Ability: You may reveal this equipment to double the ranges of this ship’s cannons for this turn. Then remove Extra Powder from the game.

    Maximum Gunpowder
    Equipment
    Point Cost: 2
Ability: If the cannons of this ship’s lines of fire are in range of more than one enemy ship, on a 6 you may eliminate one cargo from the further enemy ship in addition to any damage dealt to the closer ship. When using this ability, if a cannon roll is a 1 remove this equipment from the game and eliminate a mast from this ship.

in reply to: Custom Ships (post your custom game pieces here!) #10185

Here is an existing equipment I made:

    Extra Powder
    Equipment
    Point Cost: 1
Ability: You may reveal this equipment to double the ranges of this ship’s cannons for this turn. Then remove Extra Powder from the game.

I am now thinking about an “alternate”. However, they could also be combined into one equipment that could be used separately depending on what you wanted.

Maximum Powder (better name?): If the cannons of this ship’s lines of fire are in range of more than one enemy ship, on a 6 you may eliminate one cargo from the further enemy ship in addition to any damage dealt to the closer ship.

I’m having a lot of trouble with the wording. Basically, similar to using the “shoot through ships” ability (Myngs’ Marauders/etc), you’d have [your ship][enemy ship][enemy ship] all lined up so one of your cannons (likely L range) is in line to hit both.

During the Age of Sail, packing a cannon with enough gunpowder could allow for a shot to travel through BOTH sides of an enemy’s hull, possibly even hitting a target beyond, (probably) at reduced speed. Often this was not optimal, since it could be more devastating if a shot with regular/less gunpowder ricocheted around inside the enemy ship and maimed crew/equipment, not to mention hitting a friendly ship on the other side.  I’m thinking it would be best to not eliminate a mast from the further ship (partly for realism, though I could be off on that!), and I could change it to crew instead of cargo.

So many options. The wording of the second version could probably improve (a lot XD), and I’m open to changing the name. As I said, I could also just incorporate the new ability into the original equipment.  In that case you would have the option of using either, to avoid an Extended Range shot from traveling through more than 2 ships (maybe that actually happened, but not something I remember reading about).  I do like the thought of keeping this new ability as a separate equipment, that maybe doesn’t eliminate itself after just one use.  I may change BOTH to be that way, but get eliminated on 1 rolls like some of the shot equipment (probably with a lost mast too, because dealing with all that extra powder consistently could get dangerous).

Feel free to let me know what you think of these ideas! 😀

Consider a scenario like this with all 3 ships lined up:

[Submerged submarine][Surfaced submarine][Enemy ship on the surface]

I assume that if the submerged sub shoots at the ship on the surface with a Marine, the surfaced submarine blocks that line of fire?

(not what happened in CG2, just curious)

Perhaps a better question would be if Cadara or Shaihulud (This sea monster can attack submerged submarines) can use their ability in a similar scenario – to shoot at a submerged enemy from underwater, underneath a surfaced ship that theoretically shouldn’t be in the way.  [submerged][surfaced][submerged] (like a “direct torpedo attack”, from one submerged entity to another while passing underneath an unsuspecting ship above them)

I was luck enough to have our Keymaster Ben track me down, and offer to podcast one of our conversations. So, as in many things, he has made my Pirates CSG work that much easier. Though, there does seem to be some missing audio in the recording. Especially around the time concerning the Broadside rules misunderstanding portion. But, no harm, no foul.

Thanks again for coming on the podcast!  Sometimes the audio gets a little funky, but it seems to be different small issues at different times, so it’s hard for me to track down the source and fix it (especially when it’s during the podcast itself).

I think about them, All. Year. Long. ? Figuring out where to set-up, how much time of the day we’ll have, figuring out any rules changes, etc and so forth. Then once things get going, there’s in game strategy, out game strategy, and the reports.

Sounds like another topic for tonight’s podcast.  🙂   For me, out game strategy is sometimes when I’ve come up with the craziest strategic ideas or wild plans.

Some days I was scripting or recording almost all day.

O_O  Wow, that is a lot longer than I would have thought, but I still haven’t done a video report like yours yet.  I think I would just kinda wing it and not have a script.  XD

This has probably already been talked about…

I assume an “action canceller” wouldn’t work?  Just by definition it sounds too broken.  Trying to make it as “fair” as possible: “Once per round during an opponent’s turn, you may cancel one action taken by any ship within S of this ship.  The controller of that ship may choose to give the ship a different action, if able.”

That way your opponent could move if you cancelled their shoot action.  In that case however, a Captain would circumvent that, because the shoot is considered part of the move.

The reason I thought about this is because I’ve run into a lot of game situations where cancellers become less valuable once there’s a close quarters battle area with a ton of shots flying on both sides.  Eventually your non-canceller enemies can just sit there and shoot, at which point the cancellers are less effective than usual, hence the idea of an action canceller. (I’ve literally thought to myself “cancellers can’t cancel shoot actions” many a time during campaign games)

    @Xerecs (spoilers ahead)

    What a game!
Seems like The Cursed and Angelica were potentially careless with that massive ice floe, unless it’s moving more than I think it is.
I’m pretty sure Periscope isn’t that good, much to my disappointment when I found out. I think Woelf said that it can only be used on the turn it’s played (“this turn”), not lasting for a full round or an opponent’s turn. In which case cancelling Mycron wouldn’t do any good.
    14:43
    16:05
Those were some of my favorite pictures. The dense line of Cursed stuff is crazy!
SOOO many AWESOME pictures in this game! It definitely goes down as one of the nicest looking Pirates CSG games of all time. I watched this report like a movie with the lights dimmed and with Goldfish and popcorn at the ready. XD Like a cinematic experience. Sad to see it end, but so many great games and moments to look back on.
I had a feeling the “game is over!” would happen at the end of the music. Solid cliffhanger of sorts though. 🙂

It feels like I have a beef with the results every year. ?
Why didn’t the Spanish just spend a tiny portion of their savings to launch at least 11 more ships? If it looks close at all at the end, no reason to just make the fleet bigger to ensure victory. They played a better game than the Cursed so I’m disappointed they didn’t do things right in the end. It seems like a lot of suboptimal strategy occurs right at the end of these games, which makes the results feel weird. (CTO and other CG’s from me have had weird results, but usually the result of wild combat/alliances, not avoiding putting ships in the water)

Thanks for including the link to CTO. I think the points record for that game will be broken in the future, it’s just contingent on me living to like the 2060’s or whenever I might have time, passion and energy to top it. Or perhaps your group could, as this game got much more than halfway to 9,078.
