KeymasterJust finished rereading the reports for VASSAL Campaign Game 3, certainly one of my all time favorite games.
Ben
KeymasterHere is a version of the Master Spreadsheet with all the sets in one tab. 2652 total game pieces!
You can download it via File>Download, or grab the link at the bottom of the homepage here.

KeymasterBeing pinned restricts movement, which includes the movement caused by towing, so the Sea Monster has to release it first.
If Fear on a nearby ship hit that same Sea Monster with a 5 roll, that would theoretically release that pinned ship correct? (since then the Sea Monster would be pinned instead with the keyword cancelled) If that happened, would the ship become pinned again once the effect of Fear subsided if the Sea Monster didn’t move away and regained the use of the Sea Monster keyword?

Keymaster“3D Printing Across All Retail Sectors” section made me think about Pirates a bunch.
Ben
KeymasterJust saved the following URL’s in full page screen capture format and in the Internet Archive:
https://pirateswithben.com/tag/command-the-oceans/Throughout the day/week I will edit this post with more, and then upload them to a Google Photos account too. (certainly not expecting the site to go down, I just want redundancy in protecting my favorite/best content)

KeymasterPlunder Pack on sale a bit at HWG, but still $15 more than the original MSRP.
Ben
KeymasterWoelf now has editing access to the Master Spreadsheet, so if there are any remaining errors you find in that starting 12/14, he can make the corrections for the shared Google sheet version.

KeymasterI’m not sure if you’re the first person to figure this out for a campaign or not, but it does represent a sound strategy that few factions can match, since the Spanish have the most of those kind of ships and crew.
I think that’s where the “publicity” aspect of “modern” campaign games comes into play. It’s quite probable that someone played a campaign style game with the Spanish using a lot of gold bonuses, but they either didn’t write about it, or they did but the reports have been lost to the impermanence of internet forums/sites/etc.
It’s possible (or even very likely) that many more hours were spent in the 2000’s playing campaign-style games than in the 2010’s due to the sheer volume of players and games happening compared to today. It’s just that today, you and I record and publish nearly every turn of a campaign game that sees action. XD

Keymaster@John White: Welcome aboard matey!
@Jeremiah: Some pretty powerful lighthouses! For the Cursed Seas ability, can you place that terrain directly under ships? If you wanted a friendly Cursed ship to enter a fog bank to hide from an enemy, could you?
About The Obelisk…
This treasure can’t be removed from this ship unless she sinks.
For Nemo’s Plans, it seems as though it would be loaded automatically (since it’s loaded face up) and then it can’t be unloaded to a lighthouse afterwards. (without a house rule of course)
I do like the flavor involvement with an existing WK piece though.
Ben
KeymasterI’m also partial to the pregame map from my IRL game with The Keymaster
O_O When I saw this sentence in the email notification without the image under it, I was thrown for a massive loop. XD I’m pretty sure there was a user at Miniature Trading with that exact username (The Keymaster) who wasn’t the admin or anything. I figured you must have played another physical game with someone else from the community. XD
Your Armistice Day game was certainly a classic. Thanks for the link to my video.
Ben & Randy’s Funtime Adventure
I like that better, especially with the pinball and Mandalay Bay shenanigans after. Maybe next time will be “The Commandeering of the Treasure Island Ships”. XD
Thanks for posting here!
Ben
KeymasterIn addition to that lot I mentioned, plenty of interesting stuff being bid on right now. Newest are RV Constitution, big lot of SCS Promos and other stuff, and a sealed 36 pack box of MI.
Edit (12/6): Now a Baochuan too!

Keymaster@Jeremiah: Awesome!
If other people want to make podcasts about Pirates CSG when I’m not around, please go ahead! I only ask that you call it something other than “Pirates CSG Podcast” to avoid confusion – even just “Blackheart’s Pirates CSG Podcast” would be enough.
Ben
KeymasterThis looks awesome: Lot with many sets including decent quantity and some SE’s.

KeymasterMy 2019 Pirates CSG Hall of Fame ballot:
Rizz (aka Riz the Bloody)
Rizz has been one of the most helpful community members for many years. He has submitted various documents and uploaded useful files to BGG, including some ship and crew card blanks. He had one of the most entertaining Pirate websites, the Corsairs of Douglas County, until it was taken down around a couple years ago. He did a lot of trades “back in the day” and has various other contributions to the community. (including over 1,000 posts and 16 pages of fleet/MR comments)Piranha
Tony Vigil was the Rules Arbitrator before Woelf took over, and I believe the only other RA. One of the most important people in Pirates CSG history outside of the game designers themselves. You can hear about his experiences in Podcast #46.Ben
KeymasterDuring the game Xerecs and I just played on VASSAL, the Discord chat worked great as John White and another member were able to jump into the audio easily.
Hoping to do the call-in podcast tomorrow 12/3, possibly starting around 7pm EST.
Ben
KeymasterProbably my last physical game for quite a while: Post TG family game
Ben
KeymasterThis must have been answered before but I can’t find full confirmation in the Code. If a Sea Monster does not have sufficient cargo space and wins a boarding party, can it eliminate a non-Unique Treasure from the enemy ship?
Suppose a derelict is still pinned to the Sea Monster that rammed it. Can a separate enemy ship initiate a tow while the ship is still pinned to the monster?
Ben
KeymasterOOPS!
Forgot to post here when the big Black Friday/weekend sales started at HWG! Great time to stock up on packs! (homepage says it will last until “Monday 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time”)
Ben
KeymasterI’m wondering if I bought good packs though, there seem to be a lot of expansions out there. Is revolution a good set?
One of the best ever, and a steady favorite since it came out. I ranked the sets here, and many people consider RV their favorite.
Does it have all the generic crew like Captain, helmsman, oarsman etc. that came in the first two sets, or will I need cursed seas or crimson coast to get them?
You can see all the game pieces in all the sets in the Master Spreadsheet. Looks like RV only has the American oarsman.
Ben
KeymasterThe person who made the captions page I use for instagram posts is named… Albert Renshaw. O_O Maybe he’s a descendent of Albert Crenshaw from RV? XD
Ben
KeymasterNice lot here; not many rares but a great description.
Ben
KeymasterWelcome aboard matey!
But this time around I’ll be playing the game by the written instructions for the first time. I was much to young back then to really care about reading the manual and preferred to make up my own naval battles.
That sounds exactly like me. I preferred to do “historical fantasy scenarios” for a while, but started playing much more consistently in 2011.
I was also hoping I might be able to do a bit of trading for vessels I want in my collection, specifically the ones I haven’t been able to turn up on ebay in a while. I bought a x36 crimson coast and a x36 pirates of the revolution box so I got plenty of duplicates laying around I don’t need.
Lotta good options for ya there. You can post a Haves/Wants list in this thread, make a spreadsheet for them and link to it (I like using Google sheets), and/or check out the Buy/Sell/Trade FB group.
Ben
KeymasterDon’t see many factory sets nowadays. There’s one of BC.
Ben
KeymasterThis looks familiar… I think I also have at least one Fairfield box stuffed with unopened rules packets. XD Not sure why a picture of the actual packs isn’t included.
Ben
KeymasterHWG’s daily deal today is 36 packs of RV for $54: http://www.wholesalegaming.biz/
Ben
KeymasterWhy do you prefer Pirates over other games?
The breadth of situations and game pieces the game explores. Some entire games might stick to fighting between square-rigged galleons, Pirates has exploration, ramming, submerged vessels, repairing, towing, sea monsters, forts, and the potential to randomly toss new mechanics into the mix on the fly.
This is a great point! Though I haven’t played many other naval/sailing games….
Ben
KeymasterI think the point costs of those two ships should be reversed. I still think Repeating Guns is not that good of an ability. I almost never hit with all cannons during a shoot action, and the penalty of missing on the second volley is really nasty. I would probably actively avoid ships with that ability when making a fleet.
