I also remember my frustration as a kid from breaking my El Toro during assembly!

I remember breaking 2 crabs in a short span of time a few years ago – they can be surprisingly fragile.

From a few recent listings I watched, it looks like prices have come down a bit this year.  With the exception of an SM box of 36 packs for $263.  A set of 8 busts sold for $58.

Still some decent things up, main auction I see is MIx18.

How do you guys usually pick your game types or fleets when going into a new campaign?

Game type as in what ruleset you would use for a campaign game? (now I see your response to Xerecs’ similar question haha)  I don’t usually think too hard about starting fleets for a campaign game – it’s usually about 30 points and everyone just runs gold/resources for the first chunk of turns.

Usually, I will have an idea for a crew or ship synergy and build a fleet using that concept. Sometimes it is as simple as wanting to use specific types of ships, specific factions for thematic purposes, or even terrain set up ideas.

I’ve done all of those as well!  Love the creativity a house rule or restriction can spark.

What gets you excited to build a fleet??

Depends on my mood sometimes.  Nowadays it’s usually as crazy/gimmicky/complicated as possible.  If I’m feeling hyper/focused, serious, or “competitive”, it might be a flurry of ideas full of OP stuff and slight variations on them.  If I’m feeling amused or more relaxed it will more likely be gimmicky or weird, such as focusing on something like Kraken Gong or using Parley or whatever in a “new”-ish way.

On occasion if the game type is unique or my opponent has been using a winning strategy over and over that will also dictate how I design my fleet.

@Jeremiah: Can you recall if your opponent(s) had a particularly effective 100 point fleet they won with multiple times?

Sometimes it is fun just to make an ocean and not worry so much about balancing islands for thematic reasons or whatever.

Agreed, I tend not to worry too much about island ratios compared to the # of points or players involved.  It’s tempting to start adding a lot of stuff, but more islands means less competition for the gold/resources.  I learned from a few games when there were too many islands and almost no action as a result.  It’s very easy to just stay in your local area, collect what you can, and see who ended up with the most gold (a problem exacerbated when playing with new players that tend to not be too aggressive).

Most of my small games are 60-80 points..I think I need to step up the games!

It can be a ton of fun! 🙂

You could try this, instead of several wild islands, have only one massive island with a ton of gold on it, and the only other islands are home islands. Another possibility is to purposely make all the gold UT’s and see what madness ensues.

Indeed, or both at the same time!  XD

or we literally will close our eyes and toss a terrain on the table and play it where it lands.

Sometime I need to do that without any adjustments.  When I’ve attempted that in the past, I always end up getting annoyed when there’s a bunch of terrain in a big clump or how the setup looks silly.  🙂   In a future game I’ll have to just let it go and play it where it lands regardless.  On a big enough table this could be combined with the islands too for a “frisbee setup”.  XD

I probably got my wires crossed on the Delusion/Baochuan then..they were all from the same seller, right?

I think so, though I deleted them from my watch list.

Do you mean you see the Celtic Fury posted in the $60-100 range for Buy it Now?  I rarely see that one go that high in bidding.

Extreme patience (along with being a super active and productive member of the community) was what got me all the 10 masters on a budget, but it’s just a matter of how bad you want them. (or specific ones)

I think the Zeus went for around 90$, and surprisingly the Delusion sold for more than a Baochuan both between 20-40 I think.

Wow, I actually did start watching those before I left or something.  I’m seeing the Delusion for $23.50 and the Baochuan for $27.26, but maybe we’re looking at different auctions.

Unless I missed one, these are the last 4 Zeus auctions I have recorded:
    $85.00
    $167.50
    $110.00
    $86.00

O_O Average of 112.13! Plus, recently the Shui Xian went for $79 and the Celtic Fury went for $59, both way higher than average.

Here’s my first attempt at this since possibly 2011…  🙂

    Captain Randy
    Faction: Pirate
    Point Value: 7
Ability: Captain. Reroll. Spanish crew can use their abilities on this ship.
    Link: Las Vegas

Flavor: The leader of a new band of pirates that have mysteriously arrived via a New World desert land, Captain Randy’s enthusiasm is matched by few on the high seas. His generosity allows for some Spaniards to help him out, with luck guiding the way towards victory.
*Reroll is a tribute to the pinball we played. 🙂

    Las Vegas
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Point Value: 18
    Number of Masts: 3
    Cargo Space: 4
    Base Move: S+S
    Cannons: 3L-3S-3L
Ability: Broadsides Attack. Once per turn you may eliminate any number of this ship’s crew. For each crew you eliminate, roll a d6. On a 6, you may give any ship in your fleet an extra action.  If three or more 6’s are rolled with this ability on the same turn, place a 7 value gold coin from outside the game on your home island.

Flavor: The ultimate gamble, Captain Randy’s flagship is the epitome of the all-or-nothing mentality. Supposedly found buried in a desert west of the Mississippi River, the ship’s journey to the sea was nothing short of heroic.

Only 10 since I don’t think anyone will be able to fit more than 10 ships into a 60 point fleet, taking crew into consideration.

OK, I thought you meant that all players would pick from a pool of only 10 ships when there are hundreds that exist.

Maybe the first season, no ban list.  If things got boring or predictable with BC/CJS/events, those could go without anything else being banned.  It is a can of worms though, since the hierarchy of pieces is subjective to some extent.  (ex: BC>CJS>Hidden Cove>DHII?  Or maybe not?  XD)

Zipping through the latest posts here… glad there are a bunch!  😀

Benicio de la Tortuga seems too expensive.  I don’t think Royal Officer is a great ability, and he would probably be fine at 2-3 points.  Love his linked ship though.

I think Capitán Guillermo del Nero could come down to 10-11 points.  Now I’m starting to think I’m underestimating Royal Officer.  XD  I think the Fuega del Sol would be fine at 12.

The Serenidad is quite interesting and a ship I would love to make combos for.  Kind of a slow close quarters brawler you wouldn’t want to steal from if she was a hybrid.

Julian Ramirez’ abilities total 5 points, it’s just that sometimes an exception is made when really good combos are there.  For example, Captain+EA is more fair at 10 points than at 8.  There’s so much synergy that there should be a premium.  I’m okay with Ramirez at 5 though since it doesn’t seem too OP.

El Pez Volador is quite cool and would definitely be a simple go-to treasure runner in various games. I concur with Xerecs that 5 cargo is too many for a 1 master to have. I wish Wizkids hadn’t planned the Plague of the South from RtSS to set that precedent. For me it’s just too weird for a 1 master to have 4+ while ships like the Bruja and Lord Algernon have way less cargo than masts.

    Have a happy holidays, everyone!

    Indeed and huzzah!

Well then, I guess I can’t resist. 😀 XD  (these are all from Epic Seas; link at bottom of post)

    King of Alnor
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Cursed
    Rarity: R
    Point Value: 12
Ability: Captain. Cargo Wrecking. [When this ship hits an enemy ship, you may also eliminate one cargo from that ship.] Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 6, move an enemy ship S in any direction.
Link: Jordan Dumas, Amiral Louis Cartier, Capitaine Arazure

Flavor text: Briefly the King of France, this nobleman has been taken in, tortured, and completely brainwashed by the Cursed. They used their utmost tricks and tactics to convert him to evil. Now he sails the seas with a lost rage unfit for a Frenchman. The Cursed plan to insert him back into France as a puppet from whence they can create mass chaos.

    Grulka Kontos
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Jade Rebellion
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 3
Ability: Black Mark. Grapeshot Specialist. [When this ship is given a shoot action, one of her cannons can shoot a grape shot. Declare which cannon will shoot the grape shot before rolling a d6. If it hits, eliminate a crew instead of a mast.]

Flavor text: An extremely disgruntled sailor who is openly plotting against some of the Jade Rebels. Kontos is known to be a risk, but most assume he is too harmless to be a serious threat.

    Ramoran
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Barbary Corsair
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 4
Ability: Loyal: Barbary Corsair. Sniping. [You may double the range of this ship’s cannons each turn, but you must roll a 6 to hit.] This crew can only use his abilities on Barbary Corsair ships.

Flavor text: Despite lucrative temptations to bring his unique talents to France or the Jade Rebellion, Ramoran has stuck with the Corsairs through good times and bad. He may soon get a promotion to serve on one of the flagships of the fleet.

I’d like to bring him down to 2-3 points, but I’m worried that people will find ways to get him onto 10 masters….

    Lavish Lakehouse
    Type: Fort
    Faction Affiliation: American
    Rarity: C
    Gold Cost: 6 gold
    Cannons: 4S-4S-4S
Ability: AA. [Once at the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a result of 6, any ship in your fleet may be given two actions that turn.]

Flavor text: The mysterious private owner of this expensive mansion is said to be a well-connected former admiral, but nobody knows his true identity.

    Darkwing
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 11
    Number of Masts: 2
    Cargo Space: 4
    Base Move: L+L
    Cannons: 2S-3S
Ability: Galley. This ship must always be assigned at least 2 crew. If not, remove this ship and all cargo aboard her from the game immediately.

Flavor text: Supposedly named after a legendary dragon of old, the Darkwing is so fast that fellow pirates often miss her passing.

I was also wondering about this experimental ability that would likely cause problems: This ship gains +S to her base move for every enemy ship she touches with her oars each turn. (base move resets every turn)

    Guttural Yell
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Viking
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 11
    Number of Masts: 2
    Cargo Space: 3
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 3L-2L
Ability: Longship. Cursed crew can use their abilities on this ship.

Flavor text: Loud and manic vikings pilot this vessel, which has picked up some fiends along the way to Nova Scotia.

    Pallanix
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Viking
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 7
Ability: Captain. This ship can shoot at submerged ships within S of her.

Flavor text: Some say Pallanix used to serve the Jade Rebellion, but the truth may be more complicated than that. He learned anti-submarine warfare from an unknown mercenary, and now uses it to defend Viking outposts in the Frozen North.

    Pegasus
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
    Rarity: R
    Point Value: 13
    Number of Masts: 3
    Cargo Space: 1
    Base Move: S+S+S
    Cannons: 2S-3S-4S
Ability: Mercenary. Schooner. This ship gets +1 to her d6 rolls against The Cursed. When this ship is assigned a named crew, she gains the Eternal keyword.

Flavor text: Only a ship named after the legendary creature from Greek mythology could move at such a speed. The Pegasus was born to run, eradicating evil at every opportunity. With a talented “rider”, she can be one of the toughest ships on the sea.

    Tribal Ceremony
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
    Rarity: SE
    Point Value: 15
    Number of Masts: 3
    Cargo Space: 5
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 5S-4L-5S
Ability: Mercenary. Double Catamaran. Island treasure trading. [After looking at treasure on a wild island, you may trade any one treasure from that island for a random treasure on any other wild island. This ship must load the traded treasure.]

Flavor text: Oftentimes making an offering to the gods, the crew of the Tribal Ceremony are focused in their approach to their routine. The vessel has become hard to control by the main chieftains in the area – somewhat of a rogue catamaran.

    Bahamut
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Cursed
    Rarity: LE
    Point Value: 23
    Number of Masts: 4
    Cargo Space: 0
    Base Move: D
    Cannons: 3L-3L-3L-3L
Ability: Sea Dragon. Instead of giving this ship an action you may give a fire mast to every ship within L of this sea creature. This sea creature cannot be given actions for a number of turns equal to the number of ships affected.

Flavor text: Called by Xenthalos, this great beast ascended from the ocean depths to wreak havoc once more. The fiery terror unleashed, described as a “mega flare” by those who saw it from afar, is capable of blasting through even the strongest of ship defenses.

That main ability is too powerful I would think (AA/Mycron in the middle of an enemy formation of gunships), so I’m thinking about having a cap of up to 3 ships affected, and maybe limiting the range to S as well. Feedback welcome, especially any suggestions based on the beast from FF that I’m trying to recreate.

I think JW is mostly referring to your vast number of custom ships created when he talks about carpentry and architecture.

Ah, that makes more sense.  For me it’s more imagination than actual physical work; the carpentry part would apply more to you than me since I haven’t physically made any of my customs.

I have similar worries, but the discussion on the FB group seems to think that the Banshee’s Cry is the most OP thing in the game. Of course it possibly is along with mermaids and I proposed a league wide draft; participants would be able to chose 10 ships they could build their 60 point fleet with for the duration of a league season. Once they chose a ship, no one else in the league would be able to use it in their fleet. So the BC and the Hai-Peng would only show up in one fleet.

One could also make the argument that all game pieces with the CJS ability should be banned, arguably before the BC.  Why only 10 ships to choose from?

Those 5 masters were all nail biters! We snagged the Celtic for around 60. I think the Zeus went for around 90$, and surprisingly the Delusion sold for more than a Baochuan both between 20-40 I think. I feel like the community truly showed what these ships are worth since the bidding started so low.

Nice.  It’s bizarre to not know what stuff went for and not record it in my spreadsheet.  XD  Celtic Fury for $60 is a lot, possibly close to the second-highest for that one.

Nice!  I definitely can’t do carpentry or architecture.  XD  The AA ability is fitting though given my endless strategizing in VASSAL campaign games and how much I’ve used the ability in those same games.

The word “attitude” is subjective in the flavor text for Xerecs’ crew, but I’ve always found him to be an incredibly good sport.  The abilities are accurate though, he’s a power gamer.  🙂

I bid thee farewell (for now)…

If you ever get bored with Pirates CSG or feel it needs more “fresh” content, please take a long look at the massive quantity of stuff here on the site.  Especially when you really delve into the categories, tags, Rankings, videos, podcasts, and Battle Reports, the quantity is staggering.  Just because it seems “old” doesn’t mean it’s not good.  I’ve “been there, done that”, and basically talked about Pirates so much that there isn’t even that much more content left to make that wouldn’t be repetitive and redundant.  You can search both the site and the forums for information – both at the upper right, with the site-wide search function above to the right of the menu.  Best to search for something first before asking a question that has already been answered.  If you want to support the site, consider buying stuff through the affiliate links on the right sidebar or my links in the eBay thread.

    Have fun,

I could get behind a structured competitive gambling scene for Pirates. With money on the line there may be a need for more strict guidelines on fleet builds. Las Vegas would be the perfect place to test out this theory!!! ?

No kidding!  I’m starting to think the idea has some merit.  There could be specific tables for various rulesets, with a very basic set of rules (similar to Start Here but slightly modified) being the beginner table people could start out on.

Naturally this has been proposed before, but I hadn’t added it to the main page yet.

    -Play with real money

When setting up the game, everyone contributes real coins.  This would most likely be pennies/nickels/dimes/quarters, or just one of the above so each island would have the same amount.  It would be interesting if there was some way to hide the size/value of the coins, such as a dark sleeve… weight would still be an issue though.  It would be much more high stakes if you started involving coins like a half/full dollar, grams or ounces of silver/gold, etc.  You could turn Pirates into more of a gambling establishment – get some high rollers to wager up 8+ ounces of gold per game!  XD

At the end, everyone keeps their final gold score.  This would certainly incentivize people to play with more strategy, but it might lead to too many hyper-competitive fleets if the values went higher and higher.

American Canoes over Zeus for sure. It’s a big scary ship that’s horribly underpriced, but it’s still a single basket of eggs. The canoes can scatter in five directions, and are quick enough that even without chaining them, they can pull in a lot of gold before an opponent hunts them all down.

Both are extremely good, just hard to compare.  I haven’t used the American canoes much in a competitive/tournament setting.  In larger games they can help you win, but combining the Zeus with Hidden Cove, a sac captain, and/or Captain Jack Sparrow can be absurdly effective and dangerous.

Tsai’s entry is almost a weird representation of the Sac Captain in general, I just didn’t want to include a ton of extra stuff in the list with so many “duplicates” of the same type.  Just went with him because he’s the most versatile, and can really optimize any 10 master to be super nasty.
