    @Woelf: Glad I’ve been playing it right all this time then! 🙂

    If an Eternal ship’s oarsman is cancelled, I assume you can roll to scuttle the ship that turn? If rolled successfully, would the ship be placed at the HI via Eternal even on the turn after when the oarsman became “active” again?

    I assume Necklace of the Sky is placed face down when unloaded at a wild island? (rather than face up)

    Do you have to unload Knights of Malta Banner when docking at your own home island whether it is worth any gold or not? (I think I already asked this after that epic 4×100 game from 2015, but I forget the answer and MT is gone)

    If you’re exploring an enemy derelict, can you just take crew off the ship and put them on your own?

    I’m thinking about using your Streamlined Hull equipment in CG4, but we have a house rule there that does away with ram damage.  Do you think that upping the cost to 5 would be an acceptable “replacement drawback”? (if that seems too high, it’s partially because I’m trying to account for the sheer spending power that is generally involved in campaign games – even 5 might not be enough in the long run)  Now that I’m seeing it for the first (or second) time, my Copper Sheathing equipment idea is very similar to it.

    (not my picture of course, just used from Riz for reference here)

    Ahoy Genaro!

    Good timing, another new member is also in Michigan!  🙂

    My favorite faction was the Barbary Corsairs because I found the ships so beautiful. Carthage, and  the Asesino De La Nave were my rarest ships, and thus my prized pieces. I have, however, recently acquired a collection from a local marketplace that has increased my collection 5 fold. I’m up nearly 200 unique ships and now have a full slew of crew to throw down in any game.

    Those two are pretty good!  I agree that the galleys look amazing.  Glad to hear your collection has grown!

    Things like the mentioned scenario happen fairly frequently in my Summer games, although it’s usually about rights to dock and trade with another faction at a trading port. A few times military help is offered, most recently in 2019 the Americans attempted to recruit the French and English to work together to take on the Spanish (eventual second place finish). The French refused, since they had a lucrative trade agreement with the Spanish; the English agreed, on the condition that the pirates be eliminated first. The Americans agreed, although they didn’t really want to fight the pirates, and didn’t fight them much. The English did, and as a result of the Americans not honoring their word, didn’t fight with them against the Spanish. The Spanish and Pirates eventually eliminated the Americans.

    This is what I LOVE so much about Pirates campaign games – the grand scope makes the game way more epic and rewarding!!  The back and forth can get intense, especially with a lot of factions involved.  Each one can consider the pros and cons of even reaching out to another faction (and debate whether to do it publicly or privately), let alone actually offering help or negotiating some kind of deal.  I actually like how I had to read your paragraph 2-3 times to understand (/remember) it.  🙂   I love the complexity so much that it has made me less interested in smaller/simpler games.  XD  Especially given my time constraints going forward, I might be “campaign game or bust” with hopefully some exceptions.

    Apologies if I’ve already asked this before.  Embarrassed to admit I’ve never fully understood how it works.

    Sargasso sea timing:

    If the Sargasso Sea’s rating is more than the number of masts or segments, the game piece is tangled in the weeds and might not be able to move.

    If a game piece is tangled, you can use its action for the turn to try to free it. Roll a d6 and add the current number of masts or segments on the tangled game piece to the result. If the result is more than 6, the game piece is untangled. Orient it in any direction, facing away from the Sargasso Sea and touching any edge of the Sargasso Sea. It can be given a move action to move normally next turn.

    Can the “action for the turn” be the same action that the ship used to get tangled in the first place?  For example, can a ship get stuck and then free itself in the same turn?

    It has given me second thoughts about getting rid of it and I am curious to know more about how this place operates.  It has also made me curious about the possible existence of similar places I might be able to once again play.  I guess I’m looking for advice. Finding out that what I have long thought was stacks of worthless plastic may actually have both play value and monetary value has left me on the fence about what to do with it.  I apologize if this is a bit of a wall of text.  I’m not used to actually posting in forums.

    Welcome aboard!  Sometimes it helps to break up longer paragraphs, but your post is fine.

    The main thing is: don’t throw it out!  I can almost guarantee that there would be multiple people in the online Pirates community that would gladly pay shipping (and extra for handling) even if you didn’t want to bother trying to sell it.

    By “how this place operates”, do you mean my site here?  Or the Pirates CSG community in general?  Essentially there are a handful of places where members of the community talk about the game.  Sometimes people trade or sell their Pirates stuff, and now we can play virtually with the VASSAL module.  The community is certainly smaller than it used to be, but technology has allowed it to stay quite connected over the years.

    Feel free to post in the location thread in case any fellow players are near your area.  If you do decide to sell it, eBay is your best bet.

    Glad you have returned!  😀

    Awesome!!

    How to post a picture is in the first sticky thread at the top of the forum.

    Sounds like a unique and diverse fleet.  The Panda is quite good, and the Courageux featured in my latest game.

    Can the Selkie “mix and match” her ability with the Eye of Maru UT? (shoot one cannon at doubled range, regular rank; but other 2 with sniping – using both abilities in the same action)  (not talking about combining both on the same shot)

    Selkie: You may double the range of this ship’s cannons each turn, but you must roll a 6 to hit.

    Eye of Maru: When this ship is given a shoot action you may double the range of one of her cannons.

    @jbiondo: Sounds pretty neat overall.

    And just to shiver yer timbers some more, let’s say 2 Forts can be built on either side of the island, by ANY player, and “Raids” between Forts can happen just the same as boarding parties.

    Sounds a bit like the land warfare ideas I’ve scratched the surface on with my RISK, Command the Oceans, and Caribbean/World games.

    Dungeons would have some sort of treasure bonus, so players have extra incentive to sail around them.

    I assume you mean sail TO them?  They sound pretty rough to deal with if you didn’t get lucky and pull the faction you’re playing as, so a substantial “hidden cache” stored in the dungeon would likely be necessary.

    Have you considered an alternate word other than dungeon?  I was thinking of caves at first, but this is sounding more and more like a settlement or town. (maybe “hideout” if you wanted to keep them all to a similar theme and not go “big” like Tortuga would represent)

    Time to respond to 3 months’ worth of posts in this thread!  XD

    @JW Darkhurst: Thank you for the feedback!

    I like the Garroway and Luke Gray.  Morgenstern sounds like she’s in a pretty messed up situation… maybe the Loa can get involved somehow.  😉

    Besides I think the last line of his ability text prevents any kind of use on non-Corsair ships.

    Indeed, the “can only use their abilities on _ ships” is supposed to override the “Free Ride” ability of Anamaria and others.

    The USS Breach is an experimental vessel with extra gun ports built lower into her hull meant to target submersibles.

    Sounds ripe for a foundering.  Let’s hope she doesn’t encounter heavy seas or sudden changes in wind direction.  It would be interesting to give a negative “weather” ability, such as -1 to her storm rolls.  Or, perhaps on turns after she shoots at a submerged vessel, she sinks when her last mast is eliminated.  All I can say is that “experiment” would not turn out well in real life, as has been documented by history.

    I like the new Repeating Guns better.  What if a 4 master has 2 guns in range?  Can they use the ability or do they need all guns to be in range as well?

    I like the Subjugator at 20 points.  I would put Jacob Raines at 5 points since I like Marine at 4.

    I agree with Xerecs that the Lucrehulk could be S speed, and I like his alternate ability for the Resurgent.

    USS Democracy reminds me of a few of my 4-5 mast ships from Epic Seas.  The Castaway would be fine at 6 points.  For the Axiom, I would simply not recommend the “line to HI” thing – keeping track of that would be obnoxious and hard to remember.

    The Verlac seems pretty inept to me.  I’d be fine with her being test at about 13 points.  I’m the type of custom creator who might put the Force de Commerce at more than 20 points, maybe 22 or 23.  Though, for all I know I may have a similar custom that is just as good.  XD  I like the “Lord of Shadows”.

    For 30 points I’m shocked by how underwhelming the Suprématie looks – neither of her abilities are particularly useful or expensive.  If you keep her as-is, I think 21 points might work. (maybe that is too low haha and I’m just rusty)  With L speed perhaps 23-24 points?  Maybe I’m missing something, but I feel like their Ville de Paris from CC is pretty much as good of a ship.

    @Xerecs
    : Wow, that Carrier idea is wild and interesting.  I like it more than I thought I would, especially since native canoes could actually be disassembled aboard a large ship and stored below decks.

    It doesn’t seem particularly OP or anything, aside from it allowing for weird non-thematic situations where a ship (or string of ships) would keep loading and unloading the canoes in a chain of some sort.

    Oh boy Xerecs, more chaining to experiment with!  ;P

    I’m creating a new set, called Pirates of the Baltic Sea. It will add Sweden and Russia, as well as a Germany that has united about 100 or so years earlier than in our time line (and has a stronger navy).

    @Skelebone: Fantastic!  Will it be entirely based on history?

    Yacht: +1 to all shooting rolls against pirates. If the ship isn’t carrying any treasure or crew, it has an extra S movement.

    I HIGHLY recommend using wording as close as possible to Wizkids’ abilities.  In which case Yacht would look like this: “This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against the Pirates.*  If this ship is not carrying any treasure or crew, she gets +S to her base move.”

    *Since I’m assuming it would apply against forts and Marines, not just ships.

    The ship looks fair for gameplay!

    Assassin: +1 to all boarding rolls. After a successful boarding party, roll a d6. On a 5 or a 6, eliminate the crew with the highest point cost.

    Again, I recommend cleaning this up to avoid confusion.  For example, I assume the crew with the highest point cost has to come from the losing ship?

    I don’t like the Brig keyword because the brigs I know about have 2 masts.  It sounds like a ship-type keyword that should only be used on square-rigged 2 masters.

    Hot Air Balloons

    Not something I’ll ever want to see in an Age of Sail game, but maybe that’s just me.

    I agree that the Schultzie should be more expensive.

    @Woelf
    : Thank you as always for providing your incredible insight into the game.  Even though you do not play Pirates as much as you used to, you’re still able to ask questions that other people never seem to think of, which provides additional clarity for how abilities should work.  I’ve only been out of the loop a few months and I feel a little rusty.  XD

    ~~~~~
    Might as well post a few “new” ones of my own then!
    Hades’ Crisis
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: The Cursed
    Rarity: R
    Point Value: 18
    Number of Masts: 4
    Cargo Space: 5
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 4L-3S-4S-4L
    Ability: Galley. Fear. Fire Shot.* If this ship is not assigned cargo, she gets +L to her base move. If this ship is assigned at least 5 crew, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls.
    *Fire Shot: Once per turn when this ship is given a shoot action, one of her cannons can shoot a fire shot. Declare which cannon will shoot the fire shot before rolling the d6. If it hits, the target’s controller replaces one of her masts with a fire mast. If the cannon roll is a 1, eliminate Fire Shot from the game and replace one of this ship’s masts with a fire mast.
    Flavor text: This legendary ship from Hell is feared to be more than just a myth. She presents a conundrum – fast when used as a basic resource ferry, but deadly when crewed with fiends of the devil.
    Devil’s Rage
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: The Cursed
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 13
    Number of Masts: 2
    Cargo Space: 2
    Base Move: S+S
    Cannons: 2L-2L
    Ability: Longship. This ship may use equipment with “shot” in the name from outside the game for any of her cannon shots, even if that equipment is not assigned to this ship.
    Flavor text: Putting up an incredible barrage of deadly projectiles at the nearest sign of humanity, the Devil’s Rage is one of the fiercest small warships afloat.
    Julonia Kintelis (not my artwork!)
    Julonia Kintelis
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 10
    Ability: Ex-Patriot. Captain. Stinkpot Specialist. If a sea monster begins its move within L of this ship, it gets +L to its base move.
    Flavor text: After abandoning her French name and ancestry, this determined sailor set out for a life of her own. Finding employment as a mercenary, she knows how to pilot a ship and shut down the crew of an enemy ship. Lately she found she has a strange connection to underwater beasts of the sea.
    Here’s an experiment:
    Flaming Archers
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Neutral (these are generic crew that can use their abilities on ships of any nationality)
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 1
    Ability: These crew can use their abilities on any ship and are not subject to the No-Duplicates rule or the No-Stacking rule. This ship gains one 4S cannon that can’t have its range or rank increased. It can shoot from any mast (even an eliminated mast). When the cannon hits, replace of the enemy ship’s masts with a fire mast.
    Flavor text: Taking inspiration from a bygone age, these archers occasionally live up to their billing as an effective way of setting an enemy’s rigging alight.
    @Xerecs: Sounds like a fun day of action!  A lot of these customs still seem overpowered to me, but I guess I always think that about your customs.  XD  (I think it’s the overabundance of action generators)
    Unfortunately the Endeavour got Morgan’s Extra Action, and surged through the gap and laid waste to the Vengance, sinking her.
    Yes!  Go English!  This sounded like an epic game with some big momentum shifts.
    When you were attacking, wouldn’t the King Jones be facing two healthy warships (not three) after the Three Virtues had been dismasted?  Nice victory nonetheless.
    I will say that the defenders should theoretically have an advantage the smaller the build totals are, due to the forts.  With less points in play, the forts can have a higher impact on the game.  When the attacker is able to throw dozens of ships at the forts in a large St. Helens game, the forts are pretty much doomed either way.  I haven’t thought about this scenario in a while but I like the idea of strategizing when to come through gates as the defender.  I’d like to finally try this scenario again… I think I’ve only played it at 500 points.  I’d probably be down to try it on VASSAL soon using the map I created for it (not at 500 points XD), if you or anyone else would like. (though I understand if you’re a little tired of it after those games)
    Good job with those last deathmatches, though I’m unsurprised the English lost.  HMS Bartlesville is just not an effective ship – I would’ve wanted to swap her out after a game or two because there’s pretty much no way the English would be able to win without getting incredibly lucky.
    What are your favorite crimson coast pieces?
    Honestly a HUGE percentage of the set.  I think it is the set with the least amount of flaws (or “most perfect”).  Raven, Royal James, Victoire, HMS London, Deliverance and the French 5 masters come to mind first.  Lots of good crew too.
    Is there any better feeling than cracking packs?
    Not much better, it’s classic and nostalgic.  I do prefer a close and exciting game though, or of course winning a campaign game on VASSAL which is my ultimate “high” from Pirates CSG.  Nice pic.
    I assume you mean San Francisco? (San Fernando would likely be a very rare misprint haha)
    Always fun opening boxes – most of my full box openings were from 2011-2014.  You can see a somewhat old summary here.  My FN box from November 2014 was solid.
    Glad you got a lot of great stuff you wanted – CC is an incredible set.
    Would anybody try something like this? Any ideas to make it better?
    I think it’s a neat idea, limit the pool of available ships so people can’t just use OP stuff all the time.
    Yea, with only 525 ships I’m afraid I’m at the shallow end of the physical collection pool.
    O_O  That’s a LOT!  Probably more than most people have.  I’m not sure if I have 700 unique yet.
    I think playing otherwise standard games using Ben’s recosted list would also allow some less loved ships to see play time. I’m considering using it to get more use out of my cursed ships.
    Awesome, let us know how it goes if you’re able to!
