ModeratorThe roommate and I are coming up with an idea that would force us to incorporate some of the less desirable ships and crew into large scale games. I know it has been discussed before here that some ships are either too expensive to justify their use, or just have abilities that you don’t find helpful in certain games, so they tend to never see the water. Using a spreadsheet of owned ships and named crew, a formula generates a random list of (maybe 5-6) game pieces that can be purchased at any given time. Basically creating a “shop” where you can spend gold that you earn in game. The list could be re-randomized after making a purchase, maybe after every turn, and maybe even after paying a set amount of gold for a “reshuffle”. Basic crew could be purchased at any time, but Named crew would have to be available to purchase. The idea is kind of based on Auto-Chess/Drafting games, and could make it interesting to build a fearsome ship/crew combo over the course of a game. Still working on the list and doing some testing.
Would anybody try something like this? Any ideas to make it better?

ModeratorThis sounds like the bones to a campaign game rule-set. I’m not in favor of a limited number of ships available to purchase, but my physical collection is larger I think. I do like the idea of certain named crew being available only after a certain time has passed though.
If you get the rules worked out and whatnot then I’d be down to try this out on the VASSAL module.
Also, Economy is a custom campaign game rule-set, originally put down by Miniature Trading user Cannonfury. I think there’s a link in the game ideas thread to it. I mention this because that’s what i thought you were talking about when I saw the thread title.

Moderatoryea Ive played with those rules before, this was meant to kind of supplement those rules with a “shop”. Yea, with only 525 ships I’m afraid I’m at the shallow end of the physical collection pool. Even still, there are about 250 ships that I never play with unless I had to haha! Sweet that would be awesome!

ParticipantI think playing otherwise standard games using Ben’s recosted list would also allow some less loved ships to see play time. I’m considering using it to get more use out of my cursed ships.

ModeratorThat’s one way to get some mileage out of the Cursed. They have a handful of decent ships, and they can be somewhat decent in larger games.

I think it’s a neat idea, limit the pool of available ships so people can’t just use OP stuff all the time.

O_O That’s a LOT! Probably more than most people have. I’m not sure if I have 700 unique yet.

Awesome, let us know how it goes if you’re able to!
