XerecsModeratorSouthern California, in the suburbs of LA is where I call home.
XerecsModeratorI would rather not incorporate both into the same equipment. I like the extra powder as-is, though I think giving a ship Extended range for just 1 point might be a little much, even if it is for just one tun. Perhaps putting it a 2 points would be better.
XerecsModeratorI can’t even imagine how much time has been sunk into these campaigns. I think about them, All. Year. Long. 😀 Figuring out where to set-up, how much time of the day we’ll have, figuring out any rules changes, etc and so forth. Then once things get going, there’s in game strategy, out game strategy, and the reports. I’m trying to adopt a schedule where I script reports on Mondays and Tuesdays, record Wednesday, and edit things together on Thursday and Friday. I managed that a little this year after the game ended irl. Some days I was scripting or recording almost all day.
The next Pirates vids should be of some smaller games we managed to play during the Summer with our friend before he moved North. Then I’m going to try and get the previous years campaigns turned into videos, so that would be the first one in 2015, the second in 16, and maybe the Winter Economy game we played. Those are all long term projects, since i want to start putting some non-pirates stuff (shocking I know :D) up on my channel.
XerecsModeratorIt feels like I have a beef with the results every year.
The controller for the Cursed and Spanish figured you’d have issue with it. 😀
SOOO many AWESOME pictures in this game! It definitely goes down as one of the nicest looking Pirates CSG games of all time. I watched this report like a movie with the lights dimmed and with Goldfish and popcorn at the ready. XD Like a cinematic experience.
I’m extremely happy to hear that, and glad that you enjoyed it that much. I tied to use all 3D islands for this game, but was unable to completely do so, since the factions wound up with the regular islands as home islands. However, I was able to use the new islands that I made in the months and days leading up to the game. Those being the Shipwreck-pathway, Flat-Top, Pride rock, and Tutorial island.
Thanks for including the link to CTO. I think the points record for that game will be broken in the future, it’s just contingent on me living to like the 2060’s or whenever I might have time, passion and energy to top it. Or perhaps your group could, as this game got much more than halfway to 9,078.
We’ll (me and my brothers) likely not beat CTO next summer, and I don’t really want to, at least not next summer. However, beating our own record would wok well enough fo me. 😀
XerecsModeratorWith the last report going up not too long ago, the Century of Economy 2019 playlist is now complete, and you can watch all of the reports back-to-back here.
XerecsModeratorThe Finale is here!!! Alas, it took me longer to get up than I would have liked (it’s November for pete’s sake), but its finally here! I was debating waiting until Saturday to upload, but I figured I’d spoil all you pirates out there, or at least those of you keeping tabs on this game still. 😀
XerecsModeratorBest of luck in the Navy!
XerecsModeratorI’m more of a player than a collector, but I have focused on collecting from a certain set, and a certain faction; those being every Spanish piece from SM (named crew and ships only), and every Cursed piece from DJC (again, named crew and ships only). When I do go looking for pirates stuff, I almost always go looking for big lots at a decent price with lots of ships. I don’t find them often, but I keep my eyes open.
I don’t usually go for trades. I think I had maybe a dozen or so trades completed before MT went down, and a good half of those were “sales” and not true trades.
XerecsModeratorAs Ben said, I wasn’t sure if these were pirates or what until the end.
That said I think most of these are fine. Is the Coastal ranger’s ability based on her flavor text, like the Pirates and English don’t know that the ship has switched sides?
XerecsModeratorHow are ships that are physically built like a certain ship-type, like the HMS ye from SCS, but don’t have the associated keyword treated?
The Code says:
Ships (particularly galleys, schooners, and turtle ships) have only the abilities printed on their deckplate cards.
–While certain ship types and certain keyword abilities are often associated together, they are independent concepts that cannot be interchanged even if they have similar names.
–A ship does not automatically gain the associated keyword based on its type, nor does the presence of a keyword automatically determine a ship’s type.Does the first or last line of text take precedence? The first line seems to indicate that a ship only has the abilities printed on it’s deckplate, and if the Galley keyword is not part of that text then it doesn’t have the abilities of a Galley. The last line seems to indicate that it could still be treated like a Galley, even if the Keyword isn’t on the deckplate, since it’s built like a Galley.

XerecsModerator“The Code”

–While certain ship types and certain keyword abilities are often associated together, they are independent concepts that cannot be interchanged even if they have similar names.
–A ship does not automatically gain the associated keyword based on its type, nor does the presence of a keyword automatically determine a ship’s type.I think that last point is definitive, but I’m not sure in which way. I could see it meaning that just because it looks like a Galley does not mean that it actually IS a Galley. On the flip side, it could be treated like a Galley, even without the keyword because it’s built like a Galley.

XerecsModeratorThe Rye is physically a galley, but lacks the Keyword. Would that technically make her not a galley and therefore able to ram other ships?
XerecsModeratorHmmmm. I’m kind of all the above. 😀 I enjoy the big epic games, but I also like the smaller games with a point limit. I’ve played scenarios, gone for brutal efficiency, just for laughs, and somewhere in between more than once. So final assessment…… Whichever way the wind blows. 😀
XerecsModeratorI like Oliver Blackburn, Broadsides with no cargo taken up? sounds like a nice deal to me. His cost of 6 is probably ok. WK had some Broadsides Attack crew at that cost, which many thought was too much. His additional ability I think is worth it though I think.
I made a crew like Nick Nautilus, and I think i costed him the same, but a combo crew like that is so very useful. Normally Pirates get discounts on crew and whatnot, I would say this is one exception where he should cost more than the sum of his abilities.

I didn’t realize that Armed Merchant can be used in addition to shooting, for basically an extra shot each time the ship shoots. I’m not sure if that should be more clearly stated in the keyword text, or if I’m just not thinking about it optimally. It’s possible I’ve been underrating the ability, since you could use it like a reverse captain too.
The free shot you get from Armed Merchant is supposed to function like the shot from a Marine, but with the restrictions of a Musketeer, in that the range or rank cannot be increased, so canno bonuses will not work on the freebie. I worded it so you could use it before a move action, after a move action, after a shoot action, before, etc. If I had wanted it to be instead of shooting, I would have worded it that way.
XerecsModeratorI think you still could link the Neverland to Slank, I wouldn’t mind that.
The ship itself seems a little too good, or too optimizable. You could very easily make this a capable hybrid, especially with those cannons and base move. This is one instance where the Armed Merchant keyword might be beneficial, since the free shot can happen at anytime during your tun. If you get an EA/SAT on her, you could rip off 9 shots in one go, more than enough to seriously damage or sink one if not multiple ships.
I think it would be less of a problem if the Neverland wasn’t as fast as she currently is. Bringing her speed down to L or S would be better, since she wouldn’t be too good then.
XerecsModeratorBoth of those Pirate guys look ok. The SAC-Captain combo is worth 5 according to WK, but 7 is fine, since the Pirates ALREADY have at least two crew that do that at 5 points, so Slank at 7 is fine.
Going back to the Sacrifice, adjusting he cost is going to be tricky I think. She has incredible speed, and would make an excellent flotilla tug, but outside of he ability and speed she’s very bad. A 6L cannon will never hit without some modifications, which would have to be a cheerleading ship since the Sacrifice has no cargo. I think you could still explore islands with her, to sponge any negative UT’s, but other than that she’s of no use as a gold runner.
I think putting her at 15 is fair for now, and she could possible go lower, since the Shipburner ability could wind up rolling as a dud, which would make her useless afterward.
XerecsModeratorGut reaction, the Calamity should ave L range, not S+S, simply for sake of measurement purposes.
Sacrifice could be a few points less, maybe.
XerecsModeratorLine of battle is one that I’ve used and seen used in my Summer campaigns. After seeing how its been used in the Experimental cumulative game and in 6×150, I want to try out wind rules.
One that I’ve seen used somewhat indirectly is the power of purse/purchase, especially in campaigns. One faction gets or has so much gold saved or stocked up that they aren’t attacked or messed with for fear of the extreme retribution that could be levied by them. I feel that was more prevalent in this summer’s campaign than ever.
XerecsModeratorSome of the fleets had trouble with deck-plate space, the Cursed, French and English especially. The Americans had the entire underside of the southern ocean to put their deck-plates, and the Spanish had a table to the east, that I think can be seen sometimes in the longer shots.
The French- Pirate conflict is more or less over. The French are in no position to go chasing the Pirates into Voya Nui bay, given that the English are FINALLY committing to fighting them in force, and not sending one or two ships at a time. Their reason for doing that I assume would be the so-called “English arrogance”. To really get to the heart of the matter, you’d need to ask JWDarkhurst, who controlled them this Summer.
XerecsModeratorYay, Aistel has appeared! I’m not sure if he’s overcosted or not, since Papa Doc the original crew possessor is 8 points, but could be too expensive himself. That’s one of those discussions I’m not as up to date on. If the CP ability is okay at 8 then Aistel might be fine, since Eternal=2 points and Fear=1-2 points.
Eternal Curse looks verrrry good. I’d use this ship. I don’t think her point cost is too low, nor too high. SAC is a very good ability and worth 3 points when on a crew. When built into a ship it’s a little more difficult to tackle and track.
The secondary ability of the Curse is not worth all that much, at least according to WK, who put it around 1-2 points.
XerecsModeratorI maintain that changing the ability of the Agramon to more resemble that of one of the two Kraken’s or Cursed Captain Jack would be better.
“A7xfanben”
If you’re looking for a point cost on the Agramon, I think 30 would be a minimum place to start at.
The one from his fist post had a point cost of 25. With the original ability that’s under-costed and OP somewhat. If changed to my suggestion, or heck, even regular cancelling I think high 20’s for a point cost would be fine.
XerecsModeratorSOMEONE will be like: “This one says Captain; and that one doesn’t” (no one here; but someone, somewhere would)
The people that use customs regularly are you, me, Gingerninja, and Ben. I’ve not head of many other people using custom ships, much less ones that we’ve made. I understand your concern, but the people who will ACTUALLY USE THIS SHIP will understand what you mean.
Since she’s mentioned in the flavor text, I’ll compare her to her; Salem has a similar ability, it affects only Sea Monsters, but it gives all of them Fear. Normally I wouldn’t think it is such a big deal, but recall the 2017 game, with all the monsters concentrated in one area, each rolling for Fear for multiple ships. Evey target ship was hit with BOTH outcomes of Fear. Do you see my point?
I like the idea of her doing something like that, but I would recommend that she be modified to this:
Lilith
Points: ~12-13
Ability: Loyal: Cursed. Hostile: Non-Cursed. LIMIT. Once per turn choose one friendly ship in play, that ship has the Eternal keyword until the beginning of your next turn. Once per turn give one friendly ship +1 to her cannon rolls for this turn.
XerecsModeratorI like most of the edits to the previously posted ships, but i would still like to see a larger cargo hold on the Ravener. 😀
Either version of Lilith is beyond powerful. I’ve seen and experienced firsthand how giving all ships a keyword or two can affect game-play, especially in campaigns. I think you might be better off making her like Roberto Santana, choosing one ship to give her bonus or whatever to. Linking the ability to die rolling might also help.
the Ryuk’s ability would require crew to have the exact same ability text. This would be where Loyal: X and Hostile: X can affect gameplay. However, I would think that Captain and “This ship may move and shoot using the same move action” would count as the same thing.
Dude. The Captain keyword is treated the same as having it spelled out. So a crew that has ‘Captain’ as it’s only ability is treated exactly the same as a crew that has “This ship may move and shoot in the same move action.” So any generic ability that was turned into a keyword, like most generic crew abilities are still the same and treated the same as the versions that are spelled out.
Anyway, the Ryuk is interesting, disabling generic crew if done correctly or at the right time can have a HUGE impact on a turn or a sequence in a game.
XerecsModeratorSuppose the ability was changed to either match or resemble the ability of The Kraken, or Cursed Captain Jack. Would it be less broken then?
XerecsModeratorI hope ALL customs are available for next year’s game (or the next one overall), so factions won’t run out of ships to launch.
I intentionally limited it this year so that Custom stuff wouldn’t get used too much over the regular stuff. Furthermore, I only have models for my own sets, so Custom stuff that you or Caz or someone else has made(outside of crew) most likely won’t be used since I don’t have a model.
Using Custom stuff is one of the reasons that I started SS.
XerecsModeratorSo let me know your thoughts on the Phantom
I’m flattered that you remade one of my ships, but dude. 0.0 removing Eternal is probably wise, as well as bumping the cost up to around 26-30. The original version of the Phantom probably should have been around 20, and this version takes it up a notch and half$
Don’t get me wrong, I like this version, but a couple changes need to be made I think.
That said, I’m thinking of removing the Demon keyword completely, and just assigning specific crew/ships with Fear, Eternal, or both depending. The cannon bonus would be removed completely, but the ships that would’ve had it will probably still have good cannons (majority 3-2). So many of the concerns with current ships would be semi-fixed. Especially these ones.
The cannon bonus especially was the weight behind the Demon keyword, just like with the Makuta keyword I devised. I think following in that logic is wise, as it will keep the ships powerful, but not too overpowered.
Modifying or doing away with Demon means that parts of the Nephilim keyword will need to be adjusted or modified as well.
Finally, I quite like Brine, an EA captain for the Cursed!
XerecsModeratorI think what happens to the cargo should be specified to avoid confusion (also removed from play?).
I don’t think it confusing. If the ship is removed from play, so would the cargo, no questions about where it goes or anything.
I don’t think you need the part in parentheses.
I agree. Any ability that affects other ships (unless specified) automatically would not affect the ship that is the source of that ability. Regular cancelling for example, you can’t cancel an ability on the ship that has cancelling.
XerecsModeratorAnd the points on Christopher seem accurate to me? Not sure what you’re asking here.
just tying to confirm the cost of the Demon keyword. Fear isn’t’ very good the way it is worded or the way that WK priced it. I’ve gotten away with it at 1 point a couple times, but I think its worth 2. Eternal had a couple fluctuations in point cost, but it’s a 2 point ability to me. The cannon bonus against any ship is 5, since it’s marginally better than regular world hating.
That the keyword combines all of these into one means that it should be around 9-10 points on it’s own. My thoughts being that Christopher Morgenstern ought to be 12-13 points.
XerecsModeratorI like the idea of the Alkahest, putting a twist on the copying ability. That said, I think it should be a couple points more, mainly because of the last line of text and the abilities of Demon.
I think the range of the Agramon’s range should be reduced to a single segment, either L or S. S+S sounds nice, but is tricky to measure, especially if things get cramped and crowded.
Why does Jonathan Morgenstern have Nephilim? He links to several shihps with the Demon keyword. Thematically to me it doesn’t make sense.
Looking at what the ships do, I think it would be much more beneficial and perhaps less breaking if the Abbadon didn’t have a large cargo hold, say 3 like the Forsaken.
Going by Christopher, the Demon keyword is about 7 points, since SAC is 3; is that about right?
I’m loving these new Cursed guys, can’t wait to see the rest.
XerecsModeratorWe’re building toward the finale, Report 16 is here!
