XerecsModeratorBeen working on an ability that would let a ship load and carry around Native Canoes. It currently looks like this:
Carrier: If at any time a friendly native canoe is touching this ship, that canoe may be loaded onto this ship as cargo. Any cargo that canoe was carrying is also unloaded onto this ship. To unload canoes, give this ship a move action but do not move her. Instead place all stored canoes so that their end touches this ship.
In so far as I can tell, this doesn’t seem to be too OP or game breaking. Thoughts?
XerecsModeratorYou could try this, instead of several wild islands, have only one massive island with a ton of gold on it, and the only other islands are home islands. Another possibility is to purposely make all the gold UT’s and see what madness ensues.
XerecsModerator100 point games sound big, but they’re not as big as you’d think, at least in my experience. In the 100 point games I’ve played, I’ve used around ten islands, sometimes a few more.
XerecsModeratorI have an idea for an ability, but I want to ask a question first. An ability that specifically allowed for crew stacking; would that break the game? If not, about how many points would said ability be worth?
XerecsModeratorI get that cancelling is a powerful ability, but the Subjugator doesn’t feel like a 20 point ship to me. Given the rest of her stats I’d say you could bring her down to the 16-18 point range and be fine. My logic is thus, she’s already slow, so the fastest she could go is S+S (with a helmsman); 3 cargo spaces is decent for a 1-4 mast ship, but on fives and larger it hampers their performance, and since the Subjugator has a base move of S, you HAVE to have a helmsman, so she essentially has only 2 cargo spaces. Given those I think you can bring the point cost down to under 20, and if you don’t change anything about the ship I think you could probably get away with going as low as 15 points.
XerecsModeratorSo I assume a damaged ship with missing masts would be able to use the repeating guns on all of their available cannons. A 4 mast that has lost two masts would still be able to use repeating guns on her remaining two masts, yes?
XerecsModeratorThe second shot for repeating guns happens after all of a ships cannons have fired and hit, correct? For example, a 4 mast with repeaters hits with all cannons. It can then fire those same cannons again, correct?
I like the new version of the ability, since it’s not as damaging if you miss on the second shot. That said I’d still almost never use this keyword since I CANNOT guarantee that all of my ships cannons will hit.
On a similar vein, do you HAVE to use all available cannons on a ship to use repeating guns? Same example of a 4 mast, but I choose only to fire the most accurate one (or two). They both hit, could I then use the repeating guns on those two that I fired, or would I need to use ALL of a ships cannons (that are available) in order to use repeaters?
XerecsModeratorI don’t think adding a cargo would affect the point cost of the Justice II.
XerecsModeratorMore linked pairs. 😀 Do all of the American pieces in ES have links?
I quite like these ones, but could the Justice II have just one more cargo space? I feel that 3 slightly hampers the ship.
XerecsModeratorI really like the flavor of these two, particularly on the Breach. I’d be interested to see how those would work, since a gunport lower in the water would run the risk of water leaking or pouring in when it’s opened.
XerecsModeratorThe Jades have the best selection of Named Crew out of all the “minor” factions, and they have every generic crew up to that point; so I’m not sure what you mean when you say that they were screwed over. They’re difficult to find, true, but they do have them. In a pinch for gameplay you can make crew cut-outs with paper to stand in for crew that you don’t have for them. It’s what I do.
XerecsModeratorSomeone (*looks at Xerecs*) would find a way to get him on a 10. As it is now, all it would take is Anamaria (DPoC) on the Zeus, and he’s there.
That is one way to do it, but I’d want to get him onto a ship with predominately L range cannons, to maximize the potential range. Besides I think the last line of his ability text prevents any kind of use on non-Corsair ships.
So far I like these Americans, nice couple of linked pairs.
XerecsModeratorheh, when my brothers and I do start a campaign, we usually go faction pure. So someone has access to all the Spanish, all the English, and so on. Typically the one off factions like the Jades, Vikings, Corsairs and Mercenaries are refereed to as privateer factions. They’re basically all hired help for whoever can afford to get them first.
XerecsModeratorIf I’m playing with my bros it’s usually a deathmatch, since we like having the ships shoot at one another. 😀 Even if we don’t play a deathmatch, its usually personal collection to collection. So I’d only use ships that were my own, and they would use ships that were theirs as well.
My fleetbuilding sometimes depends on my mood. If I want to ave fun and be slightly obnoxious I’ll build a fleet around a Sea Monster or two or something like that. If I want to win I’ll usually use “Power Pieces” to try and win.
when going into a new campaign?
Could you elaborate on that please?
XerecsModeratorI was thinking that Custom ships could be phased in as seasons go by, as opposed to banning stuff. I suppose both could work.
XerecsModeratorDoes the Corbeta not have cannons?
These all look okay, though the Estrella Dorada might have too much cargo, at least for a one mast ship.
XerecsModeratorOnly 10 since I don’t think anyone will be able to fit more than 10 ships into a 60 point fleet, taking crew into consideration. I’m mostly thinking of this league like a sports league. You’ve got a roster of players (ships) on your team, but not all of them play every night or every game. Participants would have those 10 ships to make their league fleets from, and are under no obligation to use all of them in a fleet. Also, in case a fleet loses, there’s a way to tweak things.
I don’t really want to ban anything, mainly since WK never “officially”banned anything other than the Sleigh. You have a point about game pieces with that ability, and people who are calling for the ban on the BC have a point. Banning those things however will just lead to other things becoming OP, and then people start calling for THOSE pieces to be banned. You or I said it once on the MT forum, creating a ban list would only open a can of worms.
I probably will increase the “roster” that league participants will be allowed to use to somewhere around 14-15 ships.
XerecsModeratorI won’t be able to realistically participate but it sounds like a cool idea! Some of the unreleased stuff looks really good and/or fun. My biggest worry is that UPS fleets would dominate too much so the best fleets would look very similar.
I have similar worries, but the discussion on the FB group seems to think that the Banshee’s Cry is the most OP thing in the game. Of course it possibly is along with mermaids and I proposed a league wide draft; participants would be able to chose 10 ships they could build their 60 point fleet with for the duration of a league season. Once they chose a ship, no one else in the league would be able to use it in their fleet. So the BC and the Hai-Peng would only show up in one fleet.
That’s not my biggest worry though. In my head I’m thinking that is a pay to play league, similar to how the Ocean Terrain Contest was. Everyone’s entrance fee would contribute to the grand prize at the end of the season.
XerecsModeratorNice! I definitely can’t do carpentry or architecture. XD The AA ability is fitting though given my endless strategizing in VASSAL campaign games and how much I’ve used the ability in those same games.
The word “attitude” is subjective in the flavor text for Xerecs’ crew, but I’ve always found him to be an incredibly good sport. The abilities are accurate though, he’s a power gamer.
I think JW is mostly referring to your vast number of custom ships created when he talks about carpentry and architecture. 😀
I do tend to power game. I think my crew that he made would be around….. 13 points? Maybe more. 😀
XerecsModeratorHmmmm. Julian should maybe be one point more. That is what WK would put that combination of abilities as, but those are to very good abilities.
XerecsModeratorLol so no custom pieces?
How many players are you thinking of getting involved in this? There’s a limited amount of pieces to use, and it’s only a matter of time until we encounter duplicates/repeats.
-Darkhurst
No customs for the first season, probably the second as well. Later on if the league takes off Customs could slowly be phased in.
There has been a lot of discussion over on the Facebook Group about this.
XerecsModeratorContinuing my idea for a Pirates League.
This would be a semi to very competitive league, with scheduled matches, a time frame for those matches to take place in, and a Playoff tournament.
All games would be held on the VASSAL module, and would be 60 point, two player games. All pieces made by Wiz Kids, INCLUDING return to Savage Shores AND unreleased pieces would be available to players. Yes that includes Events and the Banshee’s Cry.
To see these pieces, see the Pirates Master Spreadsheet. The unreleased pieces are all the way to the right.
I’m still trying to figure some things out for this, since I really want to get this going sometime in the next year. If anyone has any thoughts comments, let me know.
XerecsModeratorhehh, I think the Flavor text is my favorite part. 😀
XerecsModeratorThis one is kind of in jest, I might make a more serious version later, with some compatriots. 😀
JW Darkhurst
Points: 11
American
Ability: Explorer. When this ship rolls a 1 for any die roll, give this ships controller 1 gold from outside the game.Flavor: The fun and music loving JW believes he is cursed. Nothing but bad luck seems to come his way, or so he claims. Despite his many arguments for this, the Admiralty does not seriously consider his claims and believes that JW only sees the negatives of a given situation.
XerecsModeratorEven though it would mean that her linked crew can’t be assigned to the ship normally, I think La Fuega del Sol should be cheaper. I’m thinking around 9-10 points. She does have two good cannons, so I could envision her going for 11, but any higher than that feels too expensive.
XerecsModeratorLet me know if/when you’re free, we can have a game or two.
I’m envisioning the League as semi to very competitive, with a set amount of time for a “regular season” and then a “playoff” at the end.
XerecsModeratorCould work that into the Pirates League I’m thinking of making.
XerecsModeratorSince CG1 it’s become somewhat of a norm in my campaigns (and the ones that I play with you) for the Spanish to use as many of or all of their ships with the +1/+2 gold bonus ability. I’m not sure if you’re the first person to figure this out for a campaign or not, but it does represent a sound strategy that few factions can match, since the Spanish have the most of those kind of ships and crew.

XerecsModeratorNot particularly. Pirates is one of about three things I obsess over, the other two being Lego and books. That said, I do like the ocean, and enjoy going to the beach every now and again, both to swim and other stuff, but also to some that are great for tidepools.
XerecsModeratorShould the Doom Viper’s ability be changed or tweaked or, with some point cost deductions, would it be fine as is?
Woelf said that as it is, it could come down a few points, probably into single digits. I agree, and a new cost of 7-8 I think would be good.
