Keymaster@Shamsy: Nice game! This is the thread where battle reports go.
Standard rules, no terrain and rather than counting out a gold value, I used random value coins. I like that wildcard.
I generally like random value coins as well.
Was the Harbinger the Pirate 5 master? She has the ship stealing ability; the Revenant can shoot through other ships but doesn’t have the Harbinger’s ability.

KeymasterI may have missed it when reading but where do we submit our fleets? This thread?
Yes, I had it under More Stuff but I’ll put it under Rules instead.
Post your fleet in this thread before 2022 starts.
Ben
KeymasterFinal numbers
Absolutely unreal. I am without speech. XD I can’t believe you got within about 500 points of the CTO record, and within 1000 points of CG4’s current total. O_O I have updated the Records post.
Ben
KeymasterI think an equally interesting thought, especially if it could be applied retroactively, would be to bid to remove certain items and/or prevent certain nations from ever getting them. Not every nation really needs or should even have a canceller or sac-crew.
Indeed, but in that case I would launch a public awareness campaign to destroy mermaids!
Ben
KeymasterOf everything, I think having the box set incorporate a known selection of generic crew is almost, or more important. Without captains, for example, you would be destroyed by an opposition who had those in abundance in their collection.
Agreed; I think any future iteration of Pirates would definitely have to make useful generic crew abundant rather than relatively scarce.
Ben
KeymasterGreat to be playing again! 2 games with local players in Tacoma WA!
Ben
Keymaster@Shamsy: Thank you for the feedback!
The idea of a split distribution sounds kinda cool. I assume you would want the random packs to contain nothing you could find in the base box? (extras only, which would prevent duplicates at least at first)
Buying for excitement could work with an idea I had for starter packs/boxes – you know you’ll get everything you need to play, but the stuff inside is still semi-random. In a French box you might get one of their 2 or 3 rare 5 masters, rather than a specific one.
Ben
KeymasterI was going to post my humble collection, but am having difficulty with inserting photos. I did read the thread but can’t get a result. To be continued.
Are you able to identify where it’s going wrong? Are you getting an error message?
Ben
KeymasterWow. When I recorded this I had no idea that apparently I was right next to a PotC filming location! ?
Ben
Keymaster@Shamsy: Welcome aboard! I love your story and it’s always great to hear about people coming back to the game.
However, the good news is I now regularly host games nights with some friends and I rediscovered my collection, safely tucked away in a few boxes. I immediately remembered the old love, the simplicity of the game, the ease of access and now I’m determined to get back into it. I played an intro game recently which went down pretty well. Now I need to work on the next four potential recruits!
Excellent! The more the merrier! 😀
Looks like Xerecs gave you good guidance on the play area size. I can’t recall hearing or seeing any Australia based Pirates sellers, whether a physical store or even an online one.
Ben
KeymasterThis is always a treat. I got the popcorn out for this finale. 🙂 I will admit I figured it would be 30 minutes of gameplay and duking it out with the last ~10 minutes for the results, so you faked me out with the quick ending. ??
The results make me wonder who would have won the war if it was played out and the Franco-Spanish stuck together. 98+67 would be 165 ships to the American 150, though some more ships likely would have been launched.
Ben
KeymasterI’m quite interested to see what becomes of the Admiral meeting. Are the Americans trying to meet with the French and Spanish admirals at the same time, or each separately? The answer to that could provide clues as to their intentions.
Ben
KeymasterIt’s been a while since I saw this thread – I’d be interested to hear more thoughts on the topic!
Ben
KeymasterBen
KeymasterHere is a very short 5 question demographics survey!
Ben
Keymaster@Xerecs: Is your intention to allow Seafloor Traveler to work with S-boarding while submerged? It would make sense per the Code, though boarding while submerged is not as explicitly ruled out in the Submarine and Sea Monster keywords compared to Seafloor Traveler.
-This ability may be used by or against a ship that is submerged.
Ben
KeymasterVery soon I’ll be away on Navy business for likely about 2 months. I’ll try to catch up on Pirates when I can.
Ben
KeymasterSo in this case could those masts not shoot forward?
They can. I think it was just an oversight when designing how the ships would look. My bad, I was only thinking about schooners.
this makes me believe it defaults back to the sea creature rules that it cannot be rammed/boarded.
Correct!
Ben
KeymasterOne other question I’ve been having. I’ve noticed that some masts only have a die printed on one side, and have assumed that was done on purpose and that shots can only be made from one side of the mast. This would mean 180 degrees is the max for that mast’s shot (assuming no other masts are in the way). Is that correct?
No, it would still be able to fire from both sides. The Code has some guidance on misprints on the first page. What ship is that on?
Ben
KeymasterI would certainly try a new digital, 3D modern graphic version of Pirates CSG, but it would only be for nostalgic purposes
@commodore-starbuck: Is that because you played the SOE version back in the day, or because the “new” feeling of new game pieces would be nostalgic? (or something else) I agree with most of your points. Why are you so adamant about Pirates returning as Pirates CSG? Why is it so important to you that it returns in the same form under the same name? I just feel like you could do more and go farther if the same or similar game was resurrected under a new name with revised rules and its own sets. Like if there were another game that was a clone of Pirates CSG but was still actively worked on and in production I would go play that.
@dbar: 1. Semi-lifelong pipe dream that I don’t want to give up on. I love pursuing it. If it doesn’t work, I’ve had incredible memories, games, and friends from it, not to mention a ton of learning about various topics.2. Legal and arguably even moral issues. I wouldn’t feel great making a “clone” and not giving credit where its due to the original designers. Not that I’m unwilling to take that route, just doesn’t seem quite right. But in addition, the closer the game is to the original (which is the game I know and love), the more likely Wizkids/NECA would have reason to sue or at least do a cease and desist order from copyright/IP infringement.
Ben, at this point I have listened to most of your podcasts…
I just don’t think the old WizKids folks want to be involved.
As podcasts 41,42,43, and 45 showed, so far the former Wizkids employees that worked on the game did show interest in returning to it. Maybe it’s impossible to get them back on board, or there is too little interest at current Wizkids/NECA for anything to happen even in the future, but that won’t stop me from trying. 🙂
Ben
KeymasterI’m wondering if there are any commonly-accepted house rules that help the game be more fun / balanced?
@stonetwig: Replying here since Xerecs already answered your rules questions. I enjoy using my Basic Rules that do away with ram damage, make boarding more practical (winner chooses the option and which treasure(s) to take), whirlpools are bad on low rolls, and some other changes. In terms of making the game more fun, the page version of this thread has a ton. 🙂Ben
KeymasterI particularly have a near fetish for everything nautical, resulting in a number of my tattoos, jewelry, and home décor being very “piratey”.
@commodore-starbuck: Nice, makes sense that this game is perfect for you then! When we’re at the family cottage, we can be seen flying a Jolly Roger from the back of the Pontoon boat when we’re going around on the lake.
Neat, I grew up with some summers at Skaneateles Lake in New York but didn’t see enough of those flags! (though I must have seen some at Alexandria Bay).
@alanere: Welcome aboard matey!
@stonetwig: Glad to have ye aboard the ship!Ben
KeymasterUnfortunately due to life trials, my collection was stolen and lost, and I forgot about the game as life went on.
Someone out there doing some real pirating! O_O
was crestfallen to learn that WizKids went down into the Drink, and are in the firm clutches of none other than Davy Jones himself.
What a great way to put it! XD
I am very excited to be able to play this game, and will likely spend most of this winter by my woodstove, playing Pirates with a glass of Havana rum in one hand, and a cigar in the other.
That sounds awesome, what area are you located in?
Thank ye Admiral Ben, and everyone else who is keeping this excellent game alive! Cheers!
Huzzah and thank you for coming aboard!
Ben
KeymasterThey may not go over the point limit of the ship, but they do go over the point limit of the fleet. 60 points is a lot more common than 68 lol.
That’s not how Jonah works. Page 36: “These abilities do not allow you to exceed the build limit of a game. They have no effect until placed on a ship during setup, which first occurs after building your fleet, so they only apply to the point limit of a ship.”
Ben
KeymasterNow I have an addition to the Fleet Review: The Motherlode.
Ben
KeymasterFor the past year I’ve been a hoarder more than anything else. XD
Ben
KeymasterMy name is Cole (CapCaw) and I got into Pirates CSG back in 2009 I believe.
Welcome aboard matey, glad to see ye aboard me ship! 😀
Ben
KeymasterDo you guys ever run into resealed packs? I played a lot of MTG and that is a real problem on the second-hand market. I am wondering if it is a problem for Pirates as well.
I don’t think I have. There have been some reports of it, mainly involving CCGCastle which is why they’re at the bottom of my list now.
Ben
KeymasterThe Pirates CSG Podcast is now available on Amazon Music and Spotify.
Ben
KeymasterWhen I met up with Tiffany on Saturday, I asked her if the set release schedule (~3 sets per year) was based on marketing/profit expectations, or if that release would be too much too soon. She said it was based on a sales schedule that mass market stores (like Walmart and Target) wanted. (I think they wanted new product every so often)
