  • I’m quite interested to see what becomes of the Admiral meeting.  Are the Americans trying to meet with the French and Spanish admirals at the same time, or each separately?  The answer to that could provide clues as to their intentions.

Top 10 Gunships for 40 Point Games
Although I’ve already made a Top 10 Gunships ranking, there have been some requests for a similar list based on the standard 40 point build total.  I agree that it’s a good i […]

    • We have very different tastes for 40 point games. 😀 I’d rather have a faster ship as a main gunship, so I’d probably not choose the Titan, even though she’s just as good if not better than the Enterprise and San Cristobal. On that same thread I’d likely not choose the Endeavor, even though she’s one of the best damage dealers out there, she’s not as fast as I’d like or as cheap as I’d like for a 40 point game.

      • Fair points. The English do have LE Griffin as a bit of a “cheat code” to help the Titan and Endeavour match or even exceed some speeds of other 5 masters.

    • True, Griffin does exist, but I’d probably not use him in a 40 point game. For the same point cost I can get three or more more valuable crew on ships that would need them. I could also get another ship or two for the point cost as well.

  • It’s been a while since I saw this thread – I’d be interested to hear more thoughts on the topic!

  • Here is a very short 5 question demographics survey!

  • @Xerecs: Is your intention to allow Seafloor Traveler to work with S-boarding while submerged?  It would make sense per the Code, though boarding while submerged is not as explicitly ruled out in the Submarine and Sea Monster keywords compared to Seafloor Traveler.

-This ability may be used by or against a ship that is submerged.

  • Very soon I’ll be away on Navy business for likely about 2 months. I’ll try to catch up on Pirates when I can.

  • So in this case could those masts not shoot forward?

They can. I think it was just an oversight when designing how the ships would look.  My bad, I was only thinking about schooners.

this makes me believe it defaults back to the sea creature rules that it cannot be rammed/boarded.

    Correct!

  • One other question I’ve been having. I’ve noticed that some masts only have a die printed on one side, and have assumed that was done on purpose and that shots can only be made from one side of the mast. This would mean 180 degrees is the max for that mast’s shot (assuming no other masts are in the way). Is that correct?

No, it would still be ab…[Read more]

  • Great points! I may add to this post someday with additional discussion on MI and Great Turtle “meta” strategies, but preferably after playing with it. I can’t remember having used the full official island placement and HI selection rules with MI’s, especially not on a strategic level where you select specific MI’s after determining who goes…[Read more]

  • I would certainly try a new digital, 3D modern graphic version of Pirates CSG, but it would only be for nostalgic purposes

@commodore-starbuck: Is that because you played the SOE version back in the day, or because the “new” feeling of new game pieces would be nostalgic? (or something else)  I agree with most of your points.

    Why are you so…

I’m wondering if there are any commonly-accepted house rules that help the game be more fun / balanced?

@stonetwig: Replying here since Xerecs already answered your rules questions.  I enjoy using my Basic Rules that do away with ram damage, make boarding more practical (winner chooses the option and which treasure(s) to take), whirlpools are bad…[Read more]

They may not go over the point limit of the ship, but they do go over the point limit of the fleet. 60 points is a lot more common than 68 lol.

That’s not how Jonah works.  Page 36: “These abilities do not allow you to exceed the build limit of a game. They have no effect until placed on a ship during setup, which first occurs after building y…[Read more]

    • Throw Mysterious Islands and things like Great Turtles into the mix for even more strategizing.

If you bring 3 Great Turtle islands and none of them are chosen as a home island…. If you plan for it by bringing a set of canoes you can move an island closer to you by sacrificing all of the canoes actions to potentially move the Turtle Sx5 That would more than get it in range of one of your ships. At that point you just need to be able to move S+S+S or equivalent to reach the Turtle island.

Great points! I may add to this post someday with additional discussion on MI and Great Turtle “meta” strategies, but preferably after playing with it. I can’t remember having used the full official island placement and HI selection rules with MI’s, especially not on a strategic level where you select specific MI’s after determining who goes first. And I only semi-recently got my first great turtles, so I’ve barely used those in general sadly.

You could even fit 2 or 3 sets of native canoes into a 40 point fleet and start moving multiple islands, especially if your opponent brings great turtles as well. Definitely lots of wild and intriguing possibilities. I think someday I may also need to try my hand at developing fleets based on island selection, such as fleets optimized for MI’s and great turtles. Very wild how deep the meta rabbit holes go….
