KeymasterIt has been 2 years since I started Command the Oceans. It became the largest recorded Pirates CSG game that I’ve heard of, and my finest effort to date.

KeymasterI was trying to not write a novel length post!
No problem with those! 😀
An alternative to making ships more tough would be to simply increase the number of ships in a standard game.
By increasing the build total? Or having a mandatory number of ships each player must sail with? I do like higher build totals, especially since it allows you to have more of a proper “fleet”, rather than calling 1-3 ships the same thing.

Keymaster@Woelf: I love how many good options there are for making it less collectible.
the classic 2 hits for every mast in same shoot action (which I think I saw utilized in one of Ben’s campaign games or something to introduce more realism)
Indeed, both Century of the Empires and Command the Oceans had that rule.
Of course, increasing the number of ships would also counteract the negatives of ship fragility. Lose a ship and it didn’t even get to do anything? No problem, you’ve got 10 more!
I assume you’re saying there would be more ships because less ships would be dismasted or sunk on average?
Ben
KeymasterNot sure if I have any ‘major’ accomplishments…..
You’ve done a TON! I think you’re at 2 campaign game wins? That alone is a huge investment of time and effort, not to mention strategic prowess. All the custom sets, physical customs, custom islands, youtube channel, etc etc…. 😀
Ben
KeymasterUnsurprisingly ran into some Rules questions in my 6×150 game that concluded today:
If a native canoe finds the Marines UT, does it leave the game or stay on the island?
Neptune’s Trident – does it affect ships docked at HI’s? Can you measure the S width S away from the ship and protruding at a perpendicular angle? (I may need to show diagram/picture)
Can you activate Ghost Ship while in a fog bank to choose your exit location or simply start moving the ship from its heading within the fog bank as if the fog bank wasn’t there?
Silly: Can you ignore a ship’s stern flag for moving purposes since it’s not a solid object? (or must ram)
If a Black Mark crew is captured by Dragon Eyes, can the Cursed crew on the now-Spanish ship not use their abilities? (or does Black Mark turn the ship Cursed for the whole game)
Ben
KeymasterFrom YT comment….
That Spanish fleet is insanely huge. The wall of ships reminds me of the Pirates in Command the Oceans.
Well maybe the Cursed would have a resource island to go to if they hadn’t farted around for days on end!! ?
Definitely feels like the Spanish should be able to beat the Americans.
I like having ships roll for the reef that a shipwreck is on, makes it more dangerous and realistic. (sometimes I put UT’s or extra high value coins there to compensate for the risk)
12:50 You know the faction is rich when their launches are launched on top of spilled piles of gold or resources. XD
16:10 Just epic, it’s the forest of masts!
I’m imagining the back pain of having to constantly reach some of the center areas, especially Voya Nui bay. I know what these games are like so props to playing it so big and long.
Funny to see a few of the ships I used in the 6×150 game today. 🙂September 6, 2019 at 9:16 PM in reply to: What is the most complicated rules situation you have encountered in a game? #9470Ben
KeymasterWay back when I’d created a set of rules challenges where there was some odd combination of pieces, and people had to figure out how the interaction worked. They’re probably lost to history at this point, although I might still have them buried in a text file somewhere…
I remember coming across some of those and being absolutely baffled. XD The Internet Archive seems to have a decent amount of random MT pages, but it would be hard to find without a link from another page or the exact URL.
As long as it wasn’t on one of the original owner’s ships
That’s the thing- it almost always was. I think the main one was trying to dump the 0LR +5 crew in whirlpools so you didn’t lose something more valuable, which of course would have just made them more OP if you can just “sac” them in some way. I think it just got a little frustrating that you couldn’t kill off the one member of the crew who wasn’t providing any immediate value.

KeymasterI love finding interesting crew/ship combinations, and have been thoroughly enjoying some of the posts here as well as the youtube channel.
That’s great to hear! Feel free to contribute your own combos/etc as well!
I only won once playing with the ship-stealing strategy but it was still really fun to play.
I agree! 🙂
Glad to have you aboard!
Ben
KeymasterIt has begun… with some bangs. XD
Ben
KeymasterAlso some new pack lots up among a bunch of stuff being bid on.

Keymaster6×150 game update: THERE WILL BE A WATERFALL. 😀
Here are my notes on the subject: Waterfall/uneven heights: Uneven tables at different heights. Waterfall into bay. Can only go down onto lower ocean, not back up unless Turbine/Submarine (perhaps sea creatures too). Whirlpools on lower table that can be used to get to whirlpools on higher table.
In addition, I think two more rules will be in effect. Ships shooting over the “Ocean’s Edge” will have Extended Range on those shots (when up high). Ships can brave the waterfall going down into the bay, but must roll a d6. On a 1-3, they lose one cargo. On a 4-6, they get +L to their base move after their other move segments are resolved.
What do you think of the house rules?

The ship in the picture will be in the game… 😀
More details to follow….
Ben
KeymasterAlso looks like one of the highest Baochuan auctions in recent memory.
Ben
KeymasterBut at least give the mediocre ships a defined niche in which they would be not be completely hopeless if they actually wind up on the table.
With more appropriate point costs, I think a lot of them would become cheap support ships not unlike the Carrion Crow or HMS Antelope. There would be a large number of ships in the 4-8 point range that could be empty gold runners or cheap support gunships. To that end, I think swarm fleets would become more viable, especially with factions other than the Pirates and Corsairs.
Ben
KeymasterSolid lot here, though perhaps not as good as the other auction starting at $80.

KeymasterHello there. I first discovered Pirates back in 2005. I was at a Walgreens, and they had an open booster box of Revolution sitting by the checkout counter. I was intrigued by the “game in every pack” tagline, and since I love the subject of historical Pirates anyways, I grabbed a handful of packs for myself and my son (who was 12 at the time). We had a lot of fun opening the packs and assembling the ships, but alas, we never got around to actually playing the game. Everything got placed into a small box, and was soon forgotten about.
Ahoy! Plenty of similarities in our stories. I turned 11 in 2005 (sounds weird to me haha) so very similar age to your son.
I quickly realized the enormous expense in attempting to collect current games, so I switched my focus to out of print games – games with an end point are usually easier and cheaper to acquire.
Interesting, that is a really unique and neat way of going about it…. of course, Pirates CSG can be its own financial black hole for a decade+ of collecting, as many of the members here can tell you. 😀
I really don’t like the idea of just dumping these fragile ships haphazardly into bins.
I use boxes, but that method has served me well; if you do it decently, the ships aren’t as fragile as people think. Though I’m a hardcore player who wants to use every game piece in the collection, so any other method wouldn’t work well for me.
Anyways, I love this site and all the info that can be found here. Thank you for all you’ve done to help keep this game alive!
Always love hearing things like this, thanks!
Ben
KeymasterThe increased price of OE at HWG has made me wonder if they’re finally starting to run out….
(from $38 for 36 packs a few years ago, I think $54 earlier this year and now $72)

KeymasterLoving some of these small/midsize lots that were recently listed: http://bit.ly/PiratesCSG
Baochuan up to $36 now.
Still think this looks like a solid deal: https://ebay.to/2MFnlIfRV SE box with Hangman’s Noose: https://ebay.to/341eBS0
USS Kettering for ~$21? https://ebay.to/2Ps57fc
TrollandToad’s eBay store is all over the place. A few FN LE crew for reasonable amounts, then a random shipwright for $50+! O_O XD https://ebay.to/2HuDc8eEdit: This looks nice too, ending very soon.

KeymasterThis would be a good thread to sticky to the top, or better yet include in a new post with any other relevant codes and tricks for posting on these forums.
Good point, I’ll think about doing that soon.

KeymasterAugust 26, 2019 at 6:25 PM in reply to: Is there anything "fancy" you do in games or with your collection? #9223Ben
KeymasterI don’t really do much ‘fancy’ stuff with my collection, other than leaving masts in the water for physical campaign games.
It’s a very open-ended question. I would say your customs collection is rather impressive, since most people either don’t make any customs in physical form, and/or don’t find good uses for their duplicates. You do both, which is neat. Plus, some of the customs look pretty “fancy”, like the Triumph. 🙂
Ben
KeymasterIndeed, mostly expensive stuff up right now. Also seeing an unpunched Baochuan.
Ben
KeymasterI talked about my experience with this in 2016, though to a slightly different extent and opinion.
But why did they decide not to keep putting pennants on top of the mainmast? The pennants look cool!
I agree. I remember reading that a lot of people didn’t use them so there just wasn’t demand. Probably saved them a little money on the printing of each ship in the later sets. Perfect for marking islands explored.

Keymaster@Telxon: Welcome aboard matey! Quite the cool intro story! I remember trying to make battleships out of simple blocks as a kid. Seems a lot of us started early with our love of naval things.

KeymasterWe have rescheduled for Sunday 8/25 at just after 10pm EST!
Edit: Due to an emergency we won’t be able to do the podcast yet.

KeymasterNice looking punched lot ending today. Seeing the PotC SR ships and some other nice stuff – Endeavour, forts, a kraken.
