If a ship with the reverse captain ability also has a captain crew on it can you move shoot and then move again?

No, not without an extra action.  See Page 20.

Very impressive that the Americans managed to sink the various Spanish 10’s.
4:05 Love this shot. Great angle and height.
10:26 Wild to see how much open ocean there is, and how much smaller the Spanish operation looks.
Nice to see the English rising even more! 😀

Recently I stumbled across two 36 pack boxes, one of Revolution and one of Barbary Coast and decided to buy them so I could force my friends to play.

Even I haven’t done that… I love Pirates, but I don’t think anyone should be forced to play it.  At least those are good sets to garner interest with!

Glad you’ve found some interesting rules here.  I’ve played over 400 games but still have a ton of rulesets and whatnot to hopefully try out in the future.

The Pirates market is alive and well! Some recent auction prices to consider:
SM island terrain set: $102.50 (new high)
Zeus: $167.50 (new high, and possibly the highest amount for a 10 master since a Guichuan sold for $175, I think in 2018)
    Dungeon (DJC LE): $24.50
    Booty Finder: $26
    Celtic Fury: $49.79
    Near-complete set of DJC: $325

Another question about an unreleased game piece:

    Blackfoot Bill
    Pirate
    2 points
Ability: When this ship is damaged, remove any crew member, except this one, instead of a mast.

Would this apply to fire masts?  I would think not, because the intent behind “remove” is more similar to “eliminate” than “replace”.

It’s great that bbpress comes with the option for adding pictures to forum posts, but I’ve had a few people ask me how to add pictures to forum posts.

At the far right of the Visual post editor, you can click the button for inserting an image.

Source: This will be the image URL’s direct link.  Generally a url generated by the image host followed by the .jpg/.png/etc file extension.

    Image description: This is optional.

Dimensions: This field is auto-filled and please leave the “constrain proportions” checkbox active, because your image may be cut off otherwise.  (or so big in rendering that it could slow down the topic loading speed)

And there you have it!  The mighty Zeus.

    Zeus, 10 masted junk ship

I cannot recommend a high quality image hosting site that is free, because they are unreliable.  I recommend backing up any pictures you have in at least 2 places overall to account for potential file loss.

Long story short: I want to use a modified (and very simplifgied) version of Pirates CSG to teach the first module of a short linear algebra course.

Certainly a unique approach!  I like how you’re combining the game with something they’ll be learning regardless.  Definitely “never woulda thought o’ that!”  😀

    Welcome aboard!

I’m a university teacher and stumbled across Pirates CSG while searching for miniatures to use as teaching aids in a class of linear algebra for biologists. Sorry to say I haven’t played it yet but I hope I can dupe my better half into playing next weekend :-D.

Feel free to use my tutorial videos since you’re new.   You can also post the results of your games in the Battle Reports thread.

What exactly counts as a defensive ability here? Specifically, ships that need to be hit twice in the same shoot action to lose a mast, would those be “immune” to Broadsides Attack or would the keyword cancel that ability?

BA ignores that ability, but doesn’t cancel it. (since it would still work against other ships not using BA on that same turn)

In the Pirate Code entry, I think the defensive abilities listed are all of the things that prevent BA from working.  Anything else gets ignored. (AFAIK)

As a dramatic example, (spoiler alert) HMS Bretwalda hit on a Broadsides Attack against El Acorazado at the end of my giant Defence of St. Helens game to effectively clinch the game for the attackers.

Very impressive effort by the Galeon de Gibraltar.
Some of those Spanish customs look absolutely amazing. The Bretwalda’s sails really make any ship look epic. I’m surprised by how much I like the contrast of the red and white sails on at least one of the custom Spanish 5’s.
Pirate raid on the French reminds me of CTO, though not with as hasty of a retreat. XD
If the Grinder’s loss was an accident, shouldn’t they get a free replacement of the same point cost? (not that they have a better ship haha) If she’s “totaled”, that’s a nasty real life loss too, financially and in terms of future gameplay… I’m really lucky all three of the 10 masters on my EE ocean survived that disaster intact in 2015.
I’m a little disappointed by the lack of support the Swallow and Valiant had… it seems like an ongoing trend that the English send a gunship or a few through the Portal to smash the French, but inevitably lose those ships after being outnumbered. Makes more sense to make a concerted effort with a full battle squadron (perhaps to replace that French fort with their own for a base of operations, actually take territory) or not attack the French at all. (or attack from a different angle as they may start doing soon)
I think I’m rooting for the French against the Pirates. The Pirates’ strategy and gameplay actually mystifies me as much as the Cursed, not that it’s a bad thing.
The pictures starting at 8:30 are just crazy. Weird but neat to see such a strange arrangement of masts and flames on the SX.
The pictures that follow are some of the more epic I’ve seen for any game. Also really helps viewers to remember the HI locations in relation to each other, which can get lost in the carnage and chaos.
(possibly will be answered on YT) Have you had trouble managing deckplate space for the fleets? (obviously a huge issue for me in CTO haha) I just had the idea of low-depth drawers stacked on top of each other to store fleets in a tower. Though it would be annoying to move them in and out to see crew setups and ability text, and crew chips would probably slide around too much.
Pretty cool to see so many fire masts, makes it look cool and prompts some interesting decisions.
    Great report!
Looking forward to playing my CG4 turn tomorrow. 😀

Instead of galleys not being able to ram I was going to change it to only galleys can ram. It seems to make sense to me thematically and for gameplay reasons, makes 1 masters better. But does this make the Barbary pirates too powerful?

I think all ships should definitely be ABLE to ram, because it’s historically accurate and boarding should be part of the game.  Perhaps you mean ram damage, which I like to do away with as well because it makes less sense and can be too powerful.

If this is a house rule you use with players, just make sure that you say “ships cannot do damage by ramming”, because within the context of the regular rules “can’t ram” also means “can’t board” (for the most part) which affects a lot of other things and even makes towing seem difficult.

Reversing it so only galleys do ram damage is viable.  I think it would be reasonable to increase the point costs of galleys by 1 point as a result, but I think you could test it with regular point costs too.  You could see if players like it and make adjustments from there.

@Vax: Welcome aboard!  Glad you’re back into it!

You could try Points in play + gold for the win.  Emphasizes captures and combat.

Assuming your friends have not played before, I would keep the build total to no more than 50 points. (30 or 40 might work better for their first game)  With teaching, rules questions, and building ships/fleets, it could take a while.

I like sticking to nationality-based fleets, but it depends on how you build fleets.  Based on the draft style you describe, I think mixed makes more sense so people aren’t forced to choose lesser ships based on the faction of their first ship.  I also recommend allowing generic crew to use their abilities on ships of any nationality.

    Have fun!

    @daddygarand
: I’ll have to add the objective-based points system to the Game Ideas page if something like that isn’t already there.  Thanks for mentioning my videos.

Love the photography even more on this one, great thumbnail too!
Neat to see the sea monster squadron again after a few years.
    4:34 Beautiful and epic!
Interesting to see the rise of the Pirates… looks like the English could do some megalaunches if they really want to go after the French.
For a moment in that picture where the English are sailing past the Guichuan, I thought an English-Cursed alliance could be in the making. XD That pair could definitely do some damage against the Spanish.
    Great report as usual!!

My question concerns using the unreleased Fort St. Phillip (in a draft of Revolution) in conjunction with native canoes.  (now that I think about it, El Puerto Blanco has the same ability)

    Fort St. Phillip
    4 gold
    3S-3S-3S-3L-3L-3L
A ship docked here may use its action to look at one face-down cargo on each island.

Do all of the canoes sacrifice their action at once in order to use the ability regardless of how many are docked there?  Or does it only require one canoe?  Do they all have to be docked there at once?  If it only requires one, can the other canoes be given their (same) actions normally?  If 5 canoes are docked at the fort, can you use the ability 5 times?

(sorry if these questions are all basically the same idea)

Apologies for the errors in the Master Spreadsheet.  I just uploaded a new .xlsx file to the homepage with the following corrections: Duex-Deux, The Red Skull instead of The Cursed, Alquimista speed from L to S+L, added Fort Brompton’s cannons, changed CC #123 from “Specialist” to Cannoneer.

The shared spreadsheet is always corrected first so that has the most up to date corrections.  If you see any mistakes, please let me know.  (even tiny stuff like an extra space between words)

@CrimsonChance: Welcome aboard matey!  Glad to have you aboard.

I agree that the individual ship artwork is part of what makes the game special.  Oftentimes people call the ships cool for their design and size, but the very unique artwork on each is a beautiful aspect of the game.

    Ahoy matey!! 😀

I originally got into the game when the Crimson Coast came out and all my friends were collecting cards and I wasn’t allowed to have Pokemon cards so I naturally shifted to Pirates.

That is interesting… I know Pokemon has some weird similarities to dogfighting and poaching, but it still seems more reasonable for a child than piracy and naval warfare.

As I got into it I found a lot of people at school and at local game shops that loved the game. We even used to have tournaments at the local game shop and big casual meet ups at the local high school for several years.

That is so awesome to hear about, sounds like some epic stuff.

But as far as the game itself goes I loved playing in games with teamates and allies having to work together towards a goal in hybrid style games more along a campaign or 2 vs 2 match.

That is really intriguing and something I am adding to the Game Ideas page.

We certainly have some things in common with our love of history!  It’s likely on permanent hiatus for now, but The Caribbean Game may be of some interest to you.

Great report Xerecs! Loving these reports, they are a fun way for me to relax while eating. 😀
    Yes go Hessian! XD
Glad the Spanish are beating the Americans, mostly because they should. Kinda feels like the Americans maybe should have tried to retreat 1-2 turns before the Spanish had that decisive blow of sorts, but I don’t know the situation in terms of if the Americans have any idea if the Spanish would pursue them heavily back to their HI. Love the “F you” move of building a fort where TI was while the Kettering is still docked there.
8:55 Love this shot, seeing some “lines of battle” to a degree along with the Zeus and the massive stockpile the English have.
9:15 Love this picture too, really shows how much the battle area has cleared up. The lighting makes me think of a dark gray sky, which is fitting given the storms.
No idea how much time is left in/for the game, but it seems like an alliance (preferably a coalition with 3+ factions) would be required to keep the Spanish from winning.

I just fixed the fleet links (hopefully all of them) for VASSAL Tournament #1 and VASSAL Tournament #2.  Between my own fleets at PwB and the others on the Internet Archive, we can see all the fleets!  😀

As a side note, anyone participating in Vendari’s VASSAL tournament may find the battle reports useful.  There is a HUGE amount of strategy talk/thoughts in those big and long tournaments, with all the games being competitive standard (1v1 at 40 points).

Edit: Also just fixed links for the fleets in the 8 fleet game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten some excellent deals on Pirates stuff on eBay, and I’m sure others here have too, but I’ve started to notice that prices for ships I consider to be relatively common are increasing at an absurd rate. This has spread over to lots as well, despite most of the offenders containing little to no elusive pieces.

Agreed, a lot of non-auctions (and even some auctions) have gotten to pretty crazy price levels.  The upside that I see is the demand for the game remaining somewhat strong.  Which I love since I really want to see a relaunch.  As I’ve said already, I’m super happy that I collected mainly from 2011-2014 before prices rose, which I think started around 2015.
