KeymasterI would also like to have seen player tins which would come with packs containing everything you need to build a 40 point fleet for a specific faction.
This is a neat idea that accomplishes the starter deck mission without giving everyone the exact same fleet to work with.
Ben
KeymasterLoad this treasure face-down. You may reveal it at the beginning of one of your turns and roll a d6. On a result of 6 this ship may take it’s turn twice. On a result of 1-3 this ship may not be given any actions this turn, and it’s next turn. Once revealed this treasure cannot be removed from this ship, if this treasure is removed from play, the game ends immediately.
This is so different that now it might be more of a negative UT than an OP one. Now that it only affects the ship carrying it, it would probably be better to define it as “this ship may be given an extra/no actions”, since ship “turns” aren’t defined in the rules.
Is the game supposed to end if the ship is sunk when the UT is still face down?
Ben
KeymasterAt the beginning of your turn you may roll a d6. On a result of 6, you may take two turns in a row. On a result of 1, your turn ends immediately, and you lose your next turn. This treasure cannot be removed from this ship. If this ship sinks, the game ends.
O_O What?! Yikes… this is on another level. I could easily use this in CG4 with the Arcane and auto-6’s to dominate that game even more, but this is so crazy that I’m going to draw a line and not even touch it. O_O (that’s saying something heh)
Even without the combos I have available in CG4 to exploit this, in normal games it could still spell a lot of trouble. It’s generally best to not have the outcome of a game decided by one d6 roll… strategy should trump luck. The last part is interesting – if you know you’re in the lead, just send this ship to the depths!
Ben
KeymasterThat Spanish Eternal fleet could be interesting if it changes how an adversary fights. An opponent will want to strip those ships of crew (oarsmen) or need extra cancelling help to deal with them. As long as those Spanish ships have plenty of support, it could be a real pain to deal with.
Ben
Keymaster@Derrick Derksen: Wow that sounds awesome! Glad it went well.
The good – The game types are challenging and require a lot of planning and strategy to win.
This sounds great and right up my alley. I hope to try them sometime! 😀 Thanks again for sharing.
Ben
Keymasterstuff will eventually get to that level.
Good good, let the broken flow through you. XD
Interesting UT’s, I like some of these. They might be ready for an “exploit”….
The Kaukau: At the beginning of your turn, roll a d6. The result is the number of turns this ship may use the Seafloor Traveler keyword.
Echoing what Woelf said, since you can’t roll a 0, this is basically a permanent effect as-is. Even if you rolled at the beginning of every turn, it wouldn’t matter what you got.
Ben
KeymasterQuite interesting. Why can you scuttle the derelict normally if that is the win condition? Any method of sinking it could cause a draw.
King of the Hill sounds even cooler to me. I like it! A variant could be the first player to capture the fort using some boarding over land metric (such as the fort has a boarding score of 8).
I like how both would probably lead to a lot of chaotic fighting over the central theme and objective.
Ben
KeymasterI feel like Nordic Raiders is the rarer of the two… but message in a bottle has better pieces?
Not sure which one is rarer. Both have some very unique game pieces. USS Mercury is one of the best submarines in the game, and the combos available for the Slipstream are undoubtedly amazing (some combos probably still out there that may not have been tried in games yet). Abandoned Crew is more fun than Odin’s Revenge.
I get a little obsessed with the Serpent’s Fang – she’s such a favorite of mine that I overrate her lol.
Ben
KeymasterIf they were only licensing it from someone it’s far enough out at this point that they may not have the legal rights anymore.
Hmmm. I’m not even sure what to think anymore.
If they do fully own the license, it’s been sitting long enough that it would take a massively increased general interest in pirate things for them to dig that treasure back up. A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie (assuming it still happens, and is good) might give some push in that direction, but it would probably still take more than that.
Based on how mum they were with DMTNT in 2017, I don’t think they’ll be doing anything. Kind of frustrating that the pirate craze came and went for a lot of folks in the 2000’s. I’m more an Age of Sail/naval warfare enthusiast than just pirate stuff so my interest doesn’t wane with pop culture trends.
Ben
KeymasterSome interesting developments for sure. It would be neat to see a 3 way battle with Pirates vs. French vs. Spanish. The French do actually have a lot of firepower in play, they just haven’t fought as much as the other two so far.
Ben
KeymasterYes….. did it seem like I implied otherwise?
I think you said “at the end of the current resource round”, which for a second made me think it meant the current round overall.
Ben
KeymasterSo which custom ships do you like better? The wooden variety from Cloud of Craft? Or the 3D printed versions offered by Vulkan?
3D printed materials are just more durable than thin wood, so they’ll work better for gameplay. Plus the full art is nice, though I suppose a decal/colored art solution for wood paste might be feasible.
Ben
KeymasterThis may be the wrong place to ask, but is there a thread for custom game rules?
Game Ideas is the place!
Ben
KeymasterNo reason for the French to be confused – the victory conditions are quite clear. If they don’t feel they can win a war with the Pirates and/or Spanish, they need to launch to make up for that deficit.
The Blood Islands sinking (at the end of 11 turns right, not this current round?) reminds me of Water World a little and a new question for both – how to treat Titans that are touching ONLY an island that is supposed to sink. Do they sink with the island, or float? XD
I would want them to float if any part of them touched water.I just realized you posted Report 10 exactly one year after your first posted the intro thread on PwB.
Definitely some parallels to other games here. The Spanish being a little disorganized reminds me of them towards the end of CG1, with the Pirates their likely foe here instead of the English. Spanish should eliminate the Americans, which happened in CG1. Will be interesting to see if a classic rivalry is soon renewed….

KeymasterThere are divots on the sides, bisecting the magnets, that mark the movement/range distance.
Makes sense now, thanks for the picture! And nice quilt! 😀
Ben
KeymasterHuh? I thought they had the rights, or had part of the rights.
As far as I’ve ever understood, they still do. Who knows who actually sent that latest message to me.
Ben
KeymasterNot sure what to make of this.

Ben
KeymasterI’m not sure if this is better or worse than the previous version, but this is closer to what the source does.
Definitely less OP than the original. And therefore, slightly less likely to get yanked into CG4. XD
Ben
KeymasterNo, I didn’t realized the in game iteration of the Dauntless was a 5 master, I remember the ship having 4 masts in the movie, but I could have been mistaken. If the in game Dauntless is a 5 master, then my version would also be a 5 master.
Technically in the movie the Dauntless has 3 masts, but for the game Wizkids made it a 5 master.
Ben
KeymasterNice win! Why do some of the stats differ from what you posted on discord?
Ben
KeymasterOne of my most exciting purchases of Pirates!
Ben
KeymasterBen
KeymasterI’m back! 🙂
Ben
Keymaster@JW Darkhurst: Good to see you here again! I just “returned” recently and I’m greatly looking forward to this year’s summer game! 🙂
I think the Olmak is more powerful than the Ignika. A string of bad rolls with the Ignika will leave you with no crew.
Agreed. Kinda think I might like to use The Olmak though… XD
@Derrick Derksen: Did you take a mast away from the Dauntless to represent it having less firepower with only pirates aboard?
I could absolutely see it being use or abused in a campaign setting with a SAC captain.
I don’t see how it’s any better than just hiring crew normally. To make it a better option (especially since the ability requires docking at your home island, which requires a move action), the crew would have to take up no space or have some other benefit.
Ben
KeymasterAs far as good pulls, we pulled most of the rare cards including both the HMS Grand Temple and Divine Dragon. We built probably 20 ships so far and that was a blast.
Awesome, glad you had fun with it!!
Ben
KeymasterI just purchased both of the Gale Force Nine island sets from Noble Knight Games as a bundled deal for a great price. Check it out!
Thanks for the tip, I just picked up a pair so I’ll finally have them!
Ben
KeymasterYeah I just saw that video the other day, it’s really cool! I like how you can still take the mast “out” while decreasing risk of breakage.
Ben
KeymasterIs there somewhere I can find a set list for OE so that I know what I am looking for?
As soon as you crack a pack you’ll see an OE checklist with the game pieces on it, but you can also use the Master Spreadsheet.
Ben
KeymasterI just recently discovered Pirates two days ago and order my first product for the game this morning. I bought a box of OE and can’t wait to get started. I don’t have much else to add at this time. Happy sailing.
Welcome aboard Derrick! 😀 Sounds like you’re off to a great start!
