KeymasterThat 5 master could probably come down in cost a bit, especially with Shipburner being such an all-or-nothing gamble (though you still effectively lose the ship either way). I think playtesting in the 18-22 range would be fair. I think it should say “you may eliminate one of this ship’s non-crew cargo.” Or simply, “you may eliminate one of this ship’s treasure or equipment.” I realize you may want to avoid the latter due to additional types of cargo being present in some campaign games.
For the Shipburner keyword, I would change “within S of enemy ships” to “an enemy ship”, “at least one enemy ship”, etc. At present you could interpret it to mean you have to be within S of at least 2 enemy ships due to the plural nature of ships.
Beni Gabor is interesting!

KeymasterDo you know if there are any free actions that can be used/taken during an opponent’s turn?
I assume not based on this line from the Code (which is mostly for full actions), but just wanted to make sure.
You can give actions only during your own turn and only to members of your own fleet, unless an ability specifically allows otherwise.

KeymasterIf this ship wins a boarding party, turn this crew face down and eliminate up to three masts from the enemy ship. This crew cannot be turned face up for a number of turns equal to that of the eliminated masts. If this ship loses a boarding party, eliminate this crew and up to three masts from this ship.
Is the “up to three masts” meant to be a choice for both the losing/winning side? Ex: Normally the loser chooses the result after a boarding party. Is this designed to eliminate 3 masts regardless of how many masts are remaining (such as never less than 3), or can you specifically choose to eliminate less?
I think it would be less open to interpretation if you took out the “up to” wording. Especially because the Pirate Code makes it pretty clear that things that eliminate masts (icebergs, 2 masts/hit, etc) don’t sink ships by themselves, and this would fall in that category.
In addition, is the mast effect in addition to the regular boarding result(s), or instead of?
Either way, I think he could be cheaper, maybe 7 points.

KeymasterI am fascinated by the thought of Pirates CSG and what if it had been released post-economic crash or even if it came out within the last few years. We know that the economic situation of 2008 had an effect, but it has also been shown that interest was still high. Other issues, such as the cost of manufacturing, also played a role.
With the cost of styrene being an issue late in the game’s print run, and global costs having risen since 2008, the MSRP per pack would have to be higher, quite possibly much higher. (2x or more perhaps)
Would it be as popular now as it was then?
The PotC/pirate craze of the 2000’s must have helped sales somewhat. I think the board game industry in general has become more competitive, with so many games available and various crowdfunding sources.
Recently I have been bringing out the Pirates stuff, setting up a table, and asking random people if they want to play. Everyone who plays loves the game, and when I tell them it no longer exists, they can’t understand it.
That’s awesome to hear! Whenever I play at an FLGS/etc there’s pretty much always at least one person that recognizes it and likely still has some ships in storage.
I think it would be pretty wild if they made a PotC6, brought the game back with it, and had Johnny Depp doing a recorded demo of it while in costume in GenCon/Origins/etc. That would be hype. 🙂

KeymasterI could see AofA getting a cost increase, though I am in “CG4 mode” still. Seems likely she’ll have a World Hater crew aboard. The speed is really the only thing holding her back. Definitely a monster gunship.
Nights Bane is cool too, another one that would be quite good in 80+ point games.
Ben
KeymasterHow does the timing of the automatic scuttle via fire masts work? “When a ship has only fire masts, she must be scuttled on her next turn.”
Ex: Player 1 makes a Player 2 ship have only fire masts on Player 1’s turn. For that ship, is “her next turn” the next Player 2 turn (the same round she was set alight), or the Player 2 turn after that one? It seems that it would depend on when “has only fire masts” is applied – on the controlling player’s turn or the overall player turn when the condition occurred that she only has fire masts left.
Ben
KeymasterIndeed! However if any Nexus Alliance stuff makes it into the Conglomerate it will likely be stuff that is publicly visible, so ships and crew that I’ve posted here or on the Discord.
Makes sense. Just let me know when you want another tab in the Customs Database.
Ben
KeymasterNice core power ships for the new faction!
Will be fun to see how they integrate into the Conglomerate in CG4.

KeymasterYou’re telling me! This is that set that I mentioned waaay back in…. 2021? 2020? When you came out to visit and we had that game at Applebees.
Two years ago this week!

KeymasterA new Custom Set is on its way! My brother and I have gone in together on this one, and we bring you Pirates of the Cursed Seas, the Farthest Shore!
Neat, how exciting! I like the uniqueness of the named crew so far. Specifically, Dr. Albert Overton is a pretty wild combo of abilities.
Ben
KeymasterIs the Doctor ability always mandatory to use? I know it doesn’t work with Sac but curious if it’s ever optional (mostly thinking about whirlpools where you’d actually prefer to lose an oarsman rather than a mast).
“When another face-up crew on this ship is would be eliminated turn it face down instead.”

KeymasterI understand that Jailhouse Dog can only be used once per round of player turns when the same ship also has Nemo’s Plans aboard. How does the timing of trying to reuse it work in a multiplayer game? For example, let’s say it’s a 4 player game and the JD controller is player 2. If they use it on player 3’s turn to essentially “cancel” a UT, can they use it on their next player 2 turn during the next round, or must they wait until at least the next player 3 turn?
Ben
KeymasterSaw CotBP in theater last night on the 20th anniversary. ? Absolutely spectacular. Even some of the quotes gave me goosebumps, not just the music. From when Barbossa throws the apple to the Interceptor blowing up, one of the best action sequences I’ve ever seen ?
Ben
KeymasterI know this has come up before but can’t find anything on it in the Code or forum search.
Can Born Leader/SAT be used to double up on the L-mover ability and use it twice in the same turn by the same ship? “Give this ship a move action but do not move her. Instead, roll a d6. On a result of 5 or 6, move an enemy ship L in any direction.”
Thanks!
Ben
KeymasterNice unpunched lot including the DJC SR’s and some DJC LE’s.
silver66cw has more rare stuff up for grabs, including a Raptor Maw, Message in a Bottle pack, and DJC LE’s.

KeymasterAfter I think 5+ years I think it may be time to retire the second of my primary measuring deckplate cards. At the left you can see that it has finally broken between the edge and bottom pennant hole. It’s also breaking between the pennant hole and main deck. I think this was the main measuring card I used during my epic 2017 campaign game Command the Oceans, so it’s seen it’s share of usage.
The last one (the “original” for me) was an HMS King Edward duplicate deckplate. I think that one got more white from even more severe usage, probably from 2011-2017 including various campaign games. That one broke on the opposite end though I believe, between the S edge and stern flag slot nub.
For the next one, I might try using a “whole” deckplate that is unpunched – I’ve got some orphans that would work well. Though, I think the parts might get accidentally punched out during usage, especially if I try to use it for 5+ years of playing haha!
Maybe the next one should be Spanish – I’ve used English and now French, and the Spanish are next in my “collection faction order” for organizing.

Ben
Keymaster-Can you roll successfully for Born Leader and then give a different ship an action before returning to the ship that got SAT? By extension, can you just roll for all the SAT/EA/etc abilities in your fleet at the beginning of your turn and then use that knowledge to help plan your fleet and action logistics?
-If a ship with both Neptune’s Figurehead and Plague is sunk, the order of operations has Plague removed from play before the ship returns to the home island? (just making sure the Plague wouldn’t prevent the Figurehead from working since you can’t dock)
-The crew that a ship links to is open information, correct? (I assume you can just ask an opponent to see the bottom of a deckplate, rather than it being hidden information like face down crew)
-Can you choose the order in which ship-specific “before giving this ship an action” effects happen? (ex: Born Leader vs. fire mast rolls)
-Do you have to roll for effect on new fire masts during the same pre-action time period in which they are gained? (I would assume not until the next pre-action “phase” for the ship, or else… yikes)Ben
