I will probably take *a few* months off before I post new content and not just responses.

Don’t. 😀  I’ve purposely kept myself in the dark with the next set, so I’d like to see it sooner rather than later.

@xerecs/etc: Making your own custom ships could get a lot easier (and maybe even cheaper LONG term) with 3D printing!  You probably saw the recent posts at the FB group; makes me want to get a 3D printer of my own!  (I’ve already seen 2 recommendations there for printers under $300)

I would LOVE to try my hand at 3D printing ships, not only for my own benefit, but I’d also be able to give them away as prizes/gifts/etc. However I barely have $50 to my name, and job hunting has been unsuccessful. For now owning a 3D printer and making custom ships with it is little more than a pipe dream.

(I use the plural form of Shipwright to indicate the ship carries them; this should avoid suggesting that the ship is a shipwright in its own right.)

So….. It DOES NOT have the shipwright ability?

Other than thhat little cofusion, I quite like these “Steam icebreakers”, they don’t seem too OP to me. I’d love to see a rough rendition of what one of them would look like ‘off the paper’.

I think I answered this on the FB group. But to reiterate:

Between me and my brothers (and for myself as well), we have some of all the expansions, though we don’t have much of SCS or FN. If I had to choose a favorite, I’d probably choose DJC, since the first packs and special boxes we ever got were from DJC. My least favorite might be BC, outside of the Corsairs; mainly due to them making every. Single. Ship. Either a schooner or galley.

My opinion hasn’t changed much since I posted that on the FB group, though after looking through our stuff recently, I find we have more SCS than I thought, and less of SS than I thought.

I’m down for commentary and for playing.

Since I don’t see it already stated, I’ll ask: May our fleets be mixed? Or single faction?

So THAT’S what was up with Customs Organized. I tried like three times to make my post there, but it kept not showing up. I was wondering what was going on.

I am considering a few abilities at the moment.

    • +1 to ram rolls
    • +S to movement for the next move action after ramming an iceberg
    • Gain a not-free move action after ramming an iceberg
    • Gain a free move action after ramming an iceberg

Any thoughts on the keyword idea?

I like that fist option the best, since it would indicate the greater power that steam assistance would give a ship when it decided to ram.

Yay, another fog-hopper! It’s becoming one of my favorite abilities, after what I did with it in CG3, and my experiments elsewhere.

Skull reaper is kinda weird, but that’s cool, I could see him on a super boarding ship.

I miss customizing, you’re gonna pull me back into that, too…

    Yes….. Join us….. 😀

It’s totally crazy how Customs have blown up. I’ve made thee full custom sets, and introduced a new one-off faction in the third one. Ben has made the most I think, which I find kind of funny, since I recall him not really being into custom ships (outside of histoical ones) when it fist came up on MT. 😀

I don’t like speaking for him, but JW has only shared about half of his total custom things. There are two more sets he has planned and mostly finished that come after Pirates: The Seas of Doom. He’s posting the LE’s for that now in the Custom ships thread.

    “El Cazador”

Constantinople is a bit too powerful as is, but I wanted to share how I had her recorded. I think that she might benefit from less cargo and a slightly lower cost. She is essentially a hoist.

I agree with less cargo, but not so much on the point drop, at least not drastically. I think 17 or 16 could work. Then again, Dromon gives her a built in fire pot, that can have it’s range increased(?), so perhhaps 18 points is fine, even with less cargo.

    “El Cazador”

Once per shoot action, one of this ship’s cannons may shoot Greek Fire that, if it hits, replaces one mast on the enemy ship with a fire mast.

    Some questions on this:

    1. Would a cannon bonus be applicable to this shot?

    2. Would this ability stack with a regular firepot?

    3. Would range modifiers be able to affect this shot?

Overall, I like this keyword, it’s essentially Galley with a little tweaking.

    “A7xfanben”

some of those larger ships could go up in cost by 1-2 points, but I suppose a lot of them are modeled after Wizkids stuff… I may have an inherent bias where I’d rather see OP things go up in price than underpowered stuff go down in price (for balancing purposes).

This is a good point to make. I modeled almost all prices for Custom ships and crew that I made off of WK prices, since they set the bar. In long terms, WK did make some mistakes, but they never ‘fixed’ any of them. Thusly, abilities like EA and SAT always start out at their original WK costs, 5 and 3, for me. If a ship or crew has more or other abilities, then of course the point cost would go up. Long way of me saying that I’m not fond of just upping the point cost on a custom. 😀

Additionally, I’m reasonably OK with a minor faction(outside of mercenaries), or a one-off faction getting slight discounts on ships and crew, since they won’t have any other ships and crew to choose from down the line (probably, assuming that no other customs are made for them); or will have a limited selection of ships and crew compared to established factions, WK or otherwise.

    “A7xfanben”

    Pandemonium
    Type: Fort
    Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
    Rarity: U
    Gold Cost: 8
    Cannons: 3L-3L-3L-3L-3L-3L-3S-3S
Ability: This fort may use any equipment with “shot” in the name up to once per turn each (the equipment does not have to be in play).

This certainly would cause that, I can already imagine the crazy things that could happen with this fot.

Given the flavor text, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Pirates CSG story based off of WK and Custom pieces. I could see this as a setting in a Pirates comic or something, teeming with people, all just barely held together with some sense of law.

    Tyrus Lancaster

When I first read that I auto corrected it in my head to “Tyrion Lannister”. 😀

Portugal was an important naval player from the age of exploration until . . . I forget the date, but it was after or toward the end of the Spanish-Portuguese union under the Habsburg monarchs.

Maybe the Anglo-Dutch wars? I’m not as familiar with naval history as some, but the English emerged as a major naval player after those wars, perhaps the decline of Portuguese sea power coincided?

I would like to eventually design more ships based around the Mediterranean Sea powers, the Baltic and North Sea powers, and the Indian Ocean and Far East sea powers, but that would be quite a lot of work for minor naval players.

Indeed, that does sound like a lot of work. For the factions based in the Mediterranean, would they be restricted to a single ship type, like the Corsairs, or would you spice things up a bit with an occasional “regular” ship here and there?

Hmmmm. This sounds cool and a neat idea, but thee HAS to be an even distribution of factions to seller locations. I mean, a 36 pack box should contain six packs for every faction, to make it evenly distributed, more or less. I’m just worried that things could trend toward SCS levels of rarity and scarcity very quickly, with a certain faction getting pieces and all that, but not being distributed as much as the other factions in the set.

Long and short, I’m totally behind this idea, especially the generic crew, I just have some concerns over how it would shake out.

I just think calling it Hidden Gold would be less confusing, especially because “Galleon” makes me think of ship type keywords like Galley

I agree with Ben, calling the ability by two different names would be confusing, like the Born Leader/SAT situation.

By the way, if you want to use a Custom ability/keyword that I’ve come up with, feel free to do so. I don’t have a comprehensive list of Custom Keywords and abilities lying around at the moment, but I think I could make one.

The Orgullo is quite nice, good cost for a 3 mast and nice ability. I’m assuming that ‘Galleon’ is more or less ‘Hidden Gold’ and does not have any implications on the physical size of the ship?

Ocean theft is interesting, that much cargo, and HG? The Hoard ability would make me want to board or come into contact with this ship as much as possible, but her speed would make that difficult I think.

    Grand City
    Type: Fort
    Faction Affiliation: Jade Rebellion
    Rarity: C
    Gold Cost: 8 gold
    Cannons: 3L-3L-3L-3L-3S-3S
Ability: This fort must be built on your home island. At this fort, you may exchange gold for generic crew from outside the game.

Flavor text: One of China’s greatest coastal cities, this metropolis was built specifically to cater to the Jade Rebellion’s naval needs. Although it cost Zheng He a small fortune, he now has easier access to able seamen to fuel his growing imperial goals.

Just saw this now….. Interesting. In a non-campaign game this might be broken, since you could pump all of you points into a few fast ships, and then use this to crew them up as the game goes on.

I think I’d want to see this used in a campaign, though I suspect it might have a CG point cost and alternate ability. 😀

I think I’d just like to see Deathshade made into a model, abilities notwithstanding.

Something that JW and I talked about regarding Marines, what if instead of a boarding bonus, a de-buff for an attacking boarder? In his and mine opinion, a contingent of Marines on a ship (assuming a generic Maine crew) wouldn’t so much boost you chances of a successful boarding, but would increase the defense of you ship in the event of a boarding action against your ship.

Ability text would pretty much be the WK version of a marine plus: Enemy ships get -1 to their boarding rolls against this ship.

I’m not sure how that would affect a point cost, but if marines could be used (again, a generic, non-named marine) at 4 points, then the boarding ‘bonus’ would add 1-2 points I think.

I see you haven’t quite given up the customs game just yet.

I’m mostly helping out JW now. I don’t think I’ll make another full custom set, since I eventually want to bring ALL of my customs sets off of the paper. That’s a VERY long term goal.

The original idea was for a generic marine as it was written by WK, but costed at 4-5 points. I’ll run some of the ideas here past JW. At the worst we just go with the first option, a generic marine at 4-5 points, with no other abilities or extra stuff.

I already house ruled that marines will eliminate one mast on a hit for CoEC, but I like the idea of them being able to cut though defenses regardless.

It’s funny you mentioned Marines, JW and I are thinking about giving every faction a Generic Marine in one of his upcoming Custom sets. We could implement these ideas to make a “new” marine crew.

The Demon’s Den intrigues me, I’ll have to look though the Epic Seas to see if there are any decent functions for the ability.

I quite like the Carronade equipment, the lack of a negative result is interesting. I like that I could use two of them in the same tun, and that I could stack other equipment on them, like using the Carronades with two different Double Shots, if all of them hit….. 😀

[This ship has 2 extra cargo spaces that may only be assigned treasure.] (Modified version of original keyword by Xerecs)

I actually did retcon it to this. I think you wee the one who said that hiding LIMIT inside the keyword was silly, and so I changed it to that version.

Interesting combinations on Halgeren, a steeper cost for SAC, but I think he’d still see action. I’ve not used or experienced un-holy light enough to have a solid opinion on it.

A perspective I’m not used to seeing; makes me think the French should launch gunships and start whittling away at the Spanish gold fleet from around the island.

the French have been actively trading with the Spanish, and are not too badly off for it. Convincing them to tun on their only trade partner would take some doing.

Agreed, the Spanish have more gold than they can spend, probably.

Cobb and Becket are die rolling admirals, but yeah. Although the pirates doing that will make them a bigger threat in the eyes of the English, something the Americans are tying to convince them otherwise.

I was speaking about the English specifically, they’re being played like one of the factions from CTO, if they haven’t seen it with one of their ships, then they don’t know about it. The English have seen the Pirates and are convinced that they are a great threat atm. It doesn’t help when the person ‘in charge of the English flavor wise is also hostile to pirates. 😀

Good idea, if I do a point count, I’ll probably mention it then.

nah, I’d definitely save up to build that. 😀 Especially if I was playing as Cursed. Although, it might be a little difficult to make a physical model for this, since forts only have room for 8 flags…. I suppose you could squeeze some in on the sides.

Epic song indeed, have you heard this one? It’s not the full suite, but the bit that most people are familiar with I think.

    (which hasn’t been discussed?)

I never said it hasn’t. Just a little difficult to have secretive conversations when you all live together. 😀 In addition to that some of the factions need to be SHOWN that the Spanish are a threat, and others are hesitant to fight an ally.

If I do a point count I might only post it here and on the FB group, since I don’t really want to make a video about it. I don’t think I’ll have surpassed CG1  o CG3 though.

The Pirates are in trouble, and the Spanish were friendly to them, or made overtures along that line…..
