XerecsModeratorThanks for watching!
Cool! Slightly surprised the English and Americans haven’t fired on each other given the close quarters. Seems the Spanish will be able to increase their lead given the resource change.
Neither the English or the Americans want to get involved with a heated conflict with one another, at least not yet. The resource change is going to have major implications however. 😀
XerecsModeratorAmidst the despair of losing Miniature Trading, I offer an escape, join me for Report 5 of Century of Economy, 2019.
XerecsModeratorThanks, most of these were pertinent in CoEC, though recent developments there have changed some things around.
One more question, if a UT remove, like Pirate Codex or some such was revealed and all face-up UT’s are removed, in the case of the Chariot, what happens to the crew that was brought in?
XerecsModeratorA couple things i would like expanded upon and some clarification, if possible.
From the code, Chariot of the Gods:
-A crewmember assigned to a sea monster using this unique treasure ignores all cargo space requirements.
I’m taking this to mean that a Sea Monster with a cargo of 0 would be able to have a crew assigned to it, as long as it was through the UT, is this correct? What happens when the Sea Monster in question HAS cargo, does the crew assigned by the treasure not take up cargo space?
Some clarification o UT’s and abilities that allow you to steal a treasue/gold coin.
From the code, UT section (pg 10):
-UTs may be transferred between ships like standard treasure (via an explore action), and may be transferred by abilities and effects that steal, take, or trade treasure, unless an ability specifically prevents them from being unloaded or removed from a ship.
Specifically the last bit, does this mean that abilities like Filching Gold, Hoard/Hoarding Gold would allow me to take a UT from an enemy ship, even if it was face-up?
For example, the Zeus wins a board against a ship with Metal Hull, Shipping Chats and Homemade Flag on it. Would the Hoard ability allow me to take the UT’s as well as any other treasure the target ship may have?
XerecsModeratorThanks for watching!
Seems like nobody in your group wants the French to win again or something… kinda wish I could join the game and kick some ass with them. XD
Will be funny if their “gold threat” actually incentivizes other factions to HI raid them lol. A fleet in being is the real deterrent. It would incentivize the pirates, but the Pirates have other plans at the moment….. The French controller is JW Darkhurst, who traditionally has had worse luck than you when it comes to cannon rolls. 😀 I asked him why he’s never aggressive in these games, and he replied with “I don’t like stating a fight I know I can’t win”. With the gold the French have (and the English to boot) he could easily put together a decent to deadly battle fleet, he just doesn’t want to. :X
Make no mistake, he very much wants to win, he’s just hoping he doesn’t have to fight too much. 😀

XerecsModeratorGranted, having Sea Monsters enter a game that’s already in progress isn’t really a thing under the official/standard rules, so if everyone in the game is okay with it, feel free to house rule it so the Chariot jumps to the first viable target that appears.
Thanks, I’ll probably do this.
XerecsModeratorChariot of the Gods, from the code:
If there are no sea monsters in play when this unique treasure is revealed, it remains aboard the ship that found it and has no other effect.
This has come up in CoEC, the Chariot has been found, but there are no Sea Monsters in play when it was found. What would happen if a Sea Monster came into play? Would the Chariot immediately apply to that Sea Monster that just came into play?
XerecsModeratorI noticed you posted this one around 2:30am PST!
Heh, yeah. I’m probably not going to do that again.
No crew is a big mistake I think
I agree, but I think the Spanish (o their controller) is going for a power move or something, since all of the ships he launched had 4-5 cargo already. With no crew and two cargo masters….
XerecsModeratorSmall piece of news first. I have modified a small aspect of the ruleset, essentially tweaked how the Crops function and added a note about Marines.
XerecsModeratorYour lack of “r” is getting amusing lol.
Ah crud, I totally didn’t see that until just now. 😀
Anyway, cool. I don’t think I’d do that until I had built up a following on YT.
XerecsModeratorI really like the sunken ship/shipwreck idea. I’ve thought about doing stuff like that before, but with an actual smaller table underneath my main table, making a sot of ‘underwater map’ that is entirely submerged and is where Sea Monsters and other submersible things go when they submerge from the main table. I think this would wok best with a sturdy glass table or tables.
XerecsModeratorThe shits are cool, but who gets the money? TeeSpring, a third party, you?
XerecsModeratorThanks, the way things are going I’ll probably have reports up on the weekends only, since I’ll be playing most weekdays.
XerecsModeratorReport two is now up!
June 16, 2019 at 2:17 PM in reply to: Rules for Thought #33 – Bigger Islands with more exploring #6046
XerecsModeratorI’ve done something similar with Voya Nui, since the island is so large, when you explore you roll a d6/d8, which determines the stack of treasure that you are able to look at and explore.
I think this woks best with the large custom, three dimensional islands that people make. For the regular game pack islands, I think exploring works fine as-is, since not every game is a grand epic.
XerecsModeratorHey cool, Pirate merch! Hopefully you don’t get shutdown by any legal hullaballoo.
XerecsModeratorThe fist report is now up!
XerecsModeratorThe site is behaving strangely for me again, so I’m posting the first one here.
XerecsModeratorYeah, sorry the forum doesn’t always work optimally. In the past I’ve had success just pasting into the Visual tab, which usually keeps the formatting from the original document. If pasting to the Text tab, some of it may not be recognized correctly.
I did post into the visual tab. I think it just didn’t agree with the formatting I’d done on my Doc. Hopefully it’ll be fine the next time I copy+paste from a word doc.
XerecsModeratorThanks, I’m looking forward to it as well. This Summer our time is constrained more than ever, so the victory condition number 2 is most likely to occur. However, (small spoiler) we have the least amount of islands this year than ever before, so that should force more combat and competition for islands.
Tying in to what I said above, every island from my OTC entry is being used, except for the Bone Temple Island, and the Skull rock Lagoon (SrL because I didn’t like how the base turned out, so I removed the Skull rock from the rest, you’ll see :D).
As a site note, I don’t think the site likes copying and pasting in from a word Doc. I had to edit the main post twice since a bunch of code looking stuff was intermixed with the text. I’m not sue what caused it, but a heads up.
XerecsModeratorI quite like this Necromancer fellow, I’d definitely use him in a campaign, and maybe a 60 point game, perhaps a little more, the Cursed are expensive. 😀
XerecsModeratorNice, I’d not seen/forgotten some of these.
I”m scathing my head at Gimli and Lief’s point costs. I don’t quite get why they’e that expensive. Also, I think you should spell out that Lief gets +1 to HIS gun roll against the Cursed. I almost interpreted it as a +1 to cannons against the Cursed.
Proposed text change to: This crew gets +1 to its gun roll against Cursed targets.
I don’t think the Balrog needs to be that expensive, since I don’t think the ability would come into play except in a campaign…. Just my thoughts.
Flavor: After his wife was lost to a witch’s curse, King Fergus caught wind of the Witch Queen’s influence in the Cursed Empire, and decided to take to the seas in a quest to avenge his beloved queen.
Is this a reference to Salem, from FoBI? 😀
XerecsModeratorThe Corsairs are an interesting faction to play. Their selection of named crew is lacking, especially compared to the other one-off factions (Vikings and Jades being the other two). However, you will be had pressed to find a Corsair ship that has a single base move segment. A good majority of their ships have S+S or S+L as base moves, and plenty of cargo. The Corsairs are not known for their ability fight, but they are one of the best gold running factions in the entire game.
As for the set itself, I feel it’s just as good as its predecessors and worth getting if you identify more as a player than a collector.
June 9, 2019 at 2:34 AM in reply to: Rules for Thought #31 – Doubling the gold and islands for standard games? #5642
XerecsModeratorI’ve never actively used the ‘standard’ treasure rule, along with the ‘first to half total gold wins’.
That said, when I do set up games with my brothers, we agree on a set number of coins per island, but the coins are selected at random from out of a pencil box whee we keep the coins punched out. (quick note, this pencil box contains almost exclusively coins with a value of 4 or grater. There are enough 1-3’s so it’s not crazy, but a majority of coins in our games are high value, which can lead to crazy final gold tallies.) We also usually agree to at least one random UT per island.
We play until all gold is on home islands (or in forts), or is sunk and out of the game. (another note, we decide before the game starts whether we’re using the rules for sunk gold, where it automatically splits between the two players, or in the event of uneven amounts of gold, sinker of ship gets lions share of the coins.) Like Ben, we put gold face down on home islands, and in forts, so we have no way o knowing how much another player has until the final tally of gold.
On more islands, I have found (and done :D) that more islands means that a player has a grater chance of emptying one or two and getting all of the loot for themselves before they have to deal with another player or two. To sum up, I think island total would depend on the number of players involved. In a 1v1, I think between 3-6 islands is best. In any game with more than a 1v1, I think that between 4-10 islands would be best. Again, it would depend on the total number of players involved in the game.
As for terrain, I’m fond of stinging it together to make large chains of terrain that divides the map up. One such infamous game featured a reef chain that split the map in two. I wound up on one side of the barrier by myself, and eventually won the game since the other two players never crossed the reef until the end game.
Many years ago I’d made scans of a couple terrain pieces and then printed them large enough to fill an entire Letter-sized (8.5″ x 11″) sheet of paper.
I recall seeing something about that as well on the MT forum, though I’ve forgotten where exactly. I’ve thought of doing the same, or making my own large flat terrain. Supersized versions of certain terrain would make for some interesting games, and the mention of super sized Icebergs recalls to me some custom Viking stuff, like a fort that could be built on an iceberg.
XerecsModeratorMost of my points wee made on the FB group, but one more thing I liked was the inclusion of some of the Young Jack Sparrow book series stuff. Pieces like the Grand Barnacle, and Fluer de la Mort came directly from those books.
On that note, they could’ve used some of the things from those books as UT’s and crew. I would’ve loved to see Left foot Louis, Captain Torrents, and Jack’s young crew as actual crew, and things like the Sword of Cortes, Trident of Poseidon and Stone Eye Sam’s Stone Eye as UT’s, instead of the repeats of rum and whatnot.
I suspect the didn’t include much from those books due to lack of publicity around them, and huge amounts of publicity on the movies.
XerecsModeratorI quite like these mercenaries, Kadrax will certainly be in high demand, if only for his WH ability. Ghost Ship just makes him that much more interesting.
I agree, the combos with Gervorio would be quite interesting. As an Ex-Pat he can go anywhere, but he also has ransom, which makes him a high priority target for enemy fleets.
XerecsModeratorNice galley and linked crew. In a smaller game would be rather formidable I think, and could run as a hybrid. In large, campaign games, I’m thinking she’d make a good sentry/second line gunship. Either for a faction in need, o for the Mercs themselves.
