A situation came up that I was unsure about. I think in the end we played it correctly, but just to reassure myself.

If a player’s last ship in play is dismasted and has an oarsman that had their ability changed to another crew (OE Davey Jones) via Eye of Insanity, would the end of game trigger since the oarsman’s ability is not currently active? When does Eye of Insanity make the original target crew’s ability active again, and also what is the timing on the game officially ending? Thanks for your patience  🙂

Welcome to Ice World 2022. Simple idea: Three fleets featuring at least one Ice Breaker each. All Wild Islands are situated inside a ring of icebergs. While Ice Breakers are meant to forge a path and deal with the bergs quickly, the ever changing map could become a frosty sea of terror for hopeful treasure runners. Standard set up, however random gold amounts were chosen to be placed on islands along with four random Frozen North UT’s. Mostly an excuse to give some new Frozen North ships their Maiden Voyages.

    Vikings v French v Spanish

All three fleets begin their journey and make a path into the fray. Immediately, Le Breton takes the first hit from a moving iceberg.

     No description available.

Without missing a beat, Le Breton continues to open up the path for her fleet, while La Dijon makes the first explore action. Le Coeur de Lion stays close to her cohorts, and La Lyon heads North into Viking territory.

     No description available.

Le Lyon sees her chance to claim the offensive upper hand in the North, and moves to attack Muninn. Unfortunately, she misses all three of her rank 1 cannon shots, but Gendarmerie Rene Moreau manages to successfully make his only attack in the game.

With a successful extra action, courtesy of  Sigurd Anderson, Muninn obliterates Le Lyon just for having disrespected her so blatantly. Polaris and Beowolf continue their path of treasure collecting in the North.

Le Breton has another close call with an ice berg but narrowly evades its clutches. Back at the French Port, Le Coeur de Lion uses Runes of Speed, which she acquired at a mid positioned island, to return home and hastily evade the encroaching Muninn Murderer. La Dijon sneaks through the icebergs, avoiding damage and finishing off the initial scoring turn of the game.

     No description available.

Having made her way across the Southern edge of the map to threaten the French, La Tartessos finds herself in the death path of Muninn. Muninn relieves the Spanish behemoth of two masts.

     No description available.

Feeling free of La Tartesso’s threats, Le Coeur de Lion makes her way out to collect more treasure, while Le Dijon hides in the fog. La Hada remains safe at a central wild island with the help of Bianco and his Haulers, and the Vikings prepare to take treasure from two more islands in the North.

     No description available.

In a poor choice of allegiance, La Tartessos tests her might on the passing Coeur de Lion, dismasting and sinking the sneaky French vessel.

No description available. No description available.

Still unable to attack La Hada, Muninn aims to finish the job she started on La Tartessos, and completely dismasts her.

Meanwhile, Le Dijon gets her first taste of ice while returning to the West to secure some previously explored islands. Exceeding French dismay, her cohorts get another taste of death in the South when Muninn swiftly sinks Le Breton.

    No description available.

While their gunship is securing offensive prowess in the South, Beowolf and Polaris return home with gold and some newly acquired Unique Treasures they are preparing to deploy.

    No description available.

The French get some karmic revenge rolling an iceberg combo that sends it directly into the bow of Muninn.

     No description available.

Later, La Hada finally makes her way home with a large amount of gold. Muninn gives chase, hoping to use her last remaining bit of firepower to thwart the Spanish.

     No description available.

    No description available.

El Profeta prepares to explore a wild island that protects her from an incoming iceberg. La Dijon also sees a second iceberg locking into place on the island she had just explored.

    No description available.

Doing her best to make haste, La Hada nearly arrives to the safety of home. But the Vikings are watching close and determined to stop Spanish progression without having their say. El Profeta finds the final Unique Treasure, but keeps her acquisition a secret.

    No description available.

In the West, the same iceberg that pestered La Dijon previously, returns to stop her dead in her tracks. With a decent amount of treasure aboard, the shipwreck becomes a focal point for the opposing nations.

    No description available.

Vikings unleash Runes of Magic on a nearby iceberg sending it directly into the port side of La Hada.

     No description available.

    No description available.

Muninn now has her chance to bring the Spanish vessel to a full stop, and does so, derelicting La Hada with two successful shots.

    No description available.

In the North, Beowolf utilizes Runes of the Serpent to dock at a nearby iceberg. With many prospects on multiple sides of the map, the Viking captain is unsure of where to appear next turn.

    No description available.

Seeing El Profeta make way towards home, and the derelict La Hada, Muninn rams into the last remaining Spanish vessel that is able to move. After a risky boarding party, Muninn loses her devastatingly useful Helmsman.

    No description available.

El Profeta continues home undeterred and leaves behind a present of Fear…no not that Fear….the fear of Odin!!

    No description available.

Beowolf arrives on the opposite side of the map via iceberg, and immediately explores a hotly contested wild island.

    No description available.

Muninn takes a center position aiming to protect the last unexplored island in the game, and attempting to move away from the Red Odin-Berg. The Odin-Berg moves North towards the unexplored island, along with three other icebergs blocking the direct path.

    No description available.

As El Profeta makes her dash towards the island, Muninn cuts her off, fires, and removes two masts from El Profeta. Odin-Berg begins to return to the fray.

    No description available.

Polaris spends several turns making her way towards the lucrative shipwreck that was the Le Dijon, but just as she arrives within range the capture, a successful scuttle from the previous turn is activated. The French have officially exited the game.

    No description available.

After a missed attempt to dismast Muninn, El Profeta continues to race towards the last bits of unclaimed treasure.

    No description available.

As Odin-Berg heads directly towards her, Muninn circles around, staying close to the desperate and wounded Spanish vessel but elects not to attack. Muninn uses a second action to move even closer to El Profeta.

     No description available.

    No description available.

Odin-Berg seems to be maliciously targeting Muninn, but stops just short of smashing into her stern. Odin-Berg could not be any closer to possibly changing the outcome of the game.

    No description available.

Polaris reaches the unexplored island and takes treasure aboard, giving the Vikings an interest in ending the game.

    No description available.

Securing her reputation as the game’s MVP and military powerhouse, Muninn fires and sinks El Profeta, removing the Spanish from the game and bringing a close to standard play.

No description available. A Surprising victory, both offensively and economically!!!

    French: 17

    I’m late but

Fleet of the Year: A small 40 point, two ship fleet I started the year with. Was the maiden voyage for my HMS Swallow, and took down a particularly annoying Baochuan build. This started my year of pondering on the english being higher on my list of favorite factions than I care to admit 😉

Picture of the Year: Posted on FB at the end of the year…Snuck right in but it was an inspiring pic to say the least.

May be an image of 3 people and outdoors

and one to toot my own horn: From my TLAP Day game…major AWE vibes

    No photo description available.

Game of the Year: With humans, 4 player 100 point game when Ben visited this year, although playing on the Strip was an equally exciting time. Solo, I would say the above mentioned TLAP game was the best solo game I have ever played.

Video of the Year: Obago Deuce taking a dive into the Bellagio lake…screw you Deuce!!

Thing of the Year: Eating Breakfast beneath a Phallic cloud.

Event of the Year: Again, seeing my boy Ben this year was great. Fourth of July with Ben at Lake Mead was super memorable for me. Here’s to another year!

Loving that the rankings are back, buddy! Great work. Oh man I don’t want to “celebrate” but a SS game on 11/10 seems like the right thing to do…hhahah

Hidden Cove is definitely at the top of most lists! I think I have more pieces that I just don’t understand the existence of (like OE Empress) than ones that are too OP. I usually feel like it is just my fault that I don’t play the OP pieces out of principle haha! We do have a group rule that new players get the BC, but once they win a game, she is off limits!!! haha

Sorry if this one has been answered to death, but I didn’t see any references to this specifically. It has been discussed that Wizkids’ handling of Sea Creature and Monster rules are slightly vague. We have also determined that Sea Monsters/Titans are granted the ability to ram and board by their keyword which overrides the Sea Creature rules. The Code, nor the keyword ever give permission for a Sea Monster TO BE rammed. So, can a Sea Monster or Titan BE rammed? Again, I’m sorry if I missed this answer somewhere, but I did look!!! 🙂

I think the Loa are outside of anything that DJ or Fantasma would deal with. The spirits of loa (at least in Lousiana and Hatian lore) demand servitude, which would not seem to interest DJ or Fantasma. They deal in cursed creatures and men, where as the Loa are considred voodoo spirits. The ingesting thing about Papa Doc is that he intends to harness purity to combat them. The very magic that he intends to use, would seem to be powered by the very spirits he wants to overthrow. He is the true pirate of the voodoo world. Also, it would stand to reason that he is at least spiritually based on a Haitian president from the 50-70’s nicknamed “Papa Doc.” His public impression:

“the look of him makes every tale seem possible – including hopeful talk that he really is one of the walking dead. His eyes are icy and hooded. His walk is measured by a robot rhythm, his voice a rheumy whisper. He keeps his hands hidden, he dresses in zombie black. His features are chilled into a graveyard mask that makes him seem the very spirit of evil.”

    <span style=”color: #000000; font-family: ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, ‘Lucida Grande’, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;”>Interesting, I haven’t thought of those possibilities then.</span>

I have a decent example. I had a game come down to the last two or three turns. Game winning treasure on a ship heading home. Fleet that was in the lead, had but one small two master still able to move, but can do nothing to stop the opposing ship from returning home and taking the lead. The two masted ship attempts to suicide (to force the end of the game) as the treasure ship is heading to unload. As the ship passes an enemy derelict, that still possessed a canceler, their helmsman was cancelled. This was enough to keep the enemy ship from docking and unloading just before the two master could take another action through a whirlpool, to have a chance to end the game that turn. I’m not sure if this is tracking the way I am describing it, but it was epic. At any rate, the key in this moment was that the helmsman’s S had not been used at the point that it crossed within S of the cancelling ship, so it couldn’t make it home that turn.

this is super interesting! I like the idea of more going on during boarding actions. I like the idea they used for the Deul Event, picking crew members to roll against eachother to see who dies. Could work that in as well. Maybe two captains could duel as a wager for ships, as is seen often in the flavor texts.

yea Ive played with those rules before, this was meant to kind of supplement those rules with a “shop”. Yea, with only 525 ships I’m afraid I’m at the shallow end of the physical collection pool. Even still, there are about 250 ships that I never play with unless I had to haha! Sweet that would be awesome!

Does the action limit apply to a Treasure Ship’s ability to move after loading treasure? So if a treasure ship uses an ability to gain a second action, then uses it to explore, can it now move S away per the Treasure Ship ability?

I do like setting up a large island with lots of treasure!!! lots o fun! I did a Columbus Day game where we did UT’s only and it was amazing. I think I will take your advice and do some UT only matches soon!

Going off standard game rules, I’ve been adding an extra wild island per player for every 20 points over 40 we use. Sometimes it is fun just to make an ocean and not worry so much about balancing islands for thematic reasons or whatever. Most of my small games are 60-80 points..I think I need to step up the games! 😉

100 point games can get pretty big!! I’ve been thinking more about how many islands should be in play as the game points go up. How many wild islands do your 100 point games usually have?

Yea they wouldn’t be as screwed in my household if I had multiples of the basic crew. I have one complete set of SCS so the Jades only get one of each basic crew. I should probably be more willing to make proxy pieces …we talked about this actually haha. Their named crew are definitely the saving grace, though as you pointed out.

I like that rule myself. We do the same with those factions, except for Jades. They get slightly screwed on basic crew because the set only gives one of each of some things, but they do very well. I like when each person has access to all of one faction. I am big for keeping fleets faction based unless we are doing econ games.

If I’m playing solo, ti is much easier to be creative with monsters and such. Usually if I’m playing with my roommate we do a draft prior to the game. Each pick one game piece at a time until our point allowance is met. Those tend to be the “power piece” games.

I probably got my wires crossed on the Delusion/Baochuan then..they were all from the same seller, right? so…..unfortunately….that Celtic…went to us hahahaha. I usually see them for 60-100 in bidding so I thought it was an ok buy…think I need to be more patient? ;-/
