KeymasterWe’re hoping to do this on April 8th, so feel free to suggest more questions! 😀
Ben
KeymasterOne alternate rule that I’ve used that slows the game down well and makes terrain in general more useful is that you only begin with home islands, and you can use a ship’s action for the turn to “discover” an island, by placing an island at least L-away from that ship, and 3-L away from any other island. Then the player to your left places a piece of terrain within S of the island, so typically between the ship and the island.
I feel like that could get pretty gamey but I have wondered multiple times about how to make the game more realistic in terms of exploration. I’m not sure how to best go about it though since it’s difficult to restrict sight and not see the entire setup.
Ben
KeymasterI’m going to start a few posts here regarding some of the weaker factions so we can figure out house rules to make them better.
But do they need to be better? I like how all the factions are unique to some extent. Boosting them can sometimes make them less interesting in my opinion.
Our topic for this thread is Mercs: how do we make them playable?
I don’t think they need to be more playable, especially not as a standalone faction. Lowering point costs on their somewhat average/mediocre ships is one way to do it, but that makes less sense when you consider that the mercenaries would want to get paid well for their services. They’re least playable in competitive games, but still do pretty well (especially the subs and 10 masters) in huge games.
Instead of flatout preventing the player from docking, the keyword could be changed so that instead, the player can only dock if they’ve unloaded gold at their HI on that turn.
That does sound interesting and fun to try out! I like how it makes sense and seems fair.
However, all this doesn’t change the fact that the Mercenary keyword doesn’t give any positives to the Mercs.
Starting the game S away from the home island is a nice little bonus. It doesn’t do much to outweigh the massive negative, but it can be beneficial in terms of getting the first shot or establishing some control over the islands before your opponent does. It also doesn’t specify that the bow has to be S away, so theoretically you can put the tip of the stern flag S away with the Merc ship facing straight at an island or your opponent, effectively doubling the bonus in some cases as a 4 master hull length is similar to S. On a 10 master it gives a big first-turn boost.
Funny enough, you could argue that the Mercenary keyword could have more negatives. XD If an opponent gives a certain amount of gold to the Mercs, they should switch allegiances to the highest bidder.

KeymasterAnother 10 master sails forth!
Devil’s Frenzy
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: LE
Point Value: 60
Number of Masts: 10
Cargo Space: 10
Base Move: L
Cannons: 3S-2S-4L-3L-2L-4S-4S-3S-5L-5L
Ability: Junk. This ship cannot carry gold or resources. This ship gets 2 shots per mast IF she targets at least 2 ships during an action. This ship gets +S to her base move if she begins a move action within S of 3 or more ships. This ship gets +1 to her equipment rolls. If this ship succeeds at a boarding party, choose two of the following: eliminate a crew, take a treasure, or eliminate a mast. At the beginning of each of your turns, choose any 2 abilities with “specialist” in the name; this ship has those abilities. The abilities do not have to be in play and you may make a different choice each turn. Marines don’t take up cargo space on this ship.
Link: UlcrunFlavor text: The Devil’s Frenzy is the home of chaos on the high seas. Usually seen fighting both broadsides in the middle of a hectic battle, the ship is so full of crazed demons, weaponry, and gunpowder that enemy sailors often faint in battle from the chaos and stress. Others go blind and deaf from the madness. The ship is seemingly a bottomless pit of gunpowder, noise, and bedlam.
Ulcrun
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: C
Point Value: 4
Ability: World Hater. [This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any [non-faction] ship.] Cargo Wrecking. [When this ship hits an enemy ship, you may also eliminate one cargo from that ship.] You must eliminate one other crew on this ship each turn to use the abilities of this crew.
Link: Devil’s FrenzyFlavor text: Ulcrun is supposedly a man, but has been mistaken many times for some kind of bizarre demon. Short, strong, and with a quick temper, he communicates with a mix of tribal speak, guttural crying, grunting and growling. His enormous appetite requires a “sacrifice” for him to fly into a rage during battle, at which point enemy ships don’t usually stand much of a chance.
This is a rare case where the crew linked to the 10 master isn’t of the same rarity, and in this case isn’t technically the captain of the Devil’s Frenzy (who could still have a named captain of course, just not linked). Wanted to each 10 master different, so this one doesn’t have a typical linked crew captain. However, Ulcrun certainly fits well given the flavor so he got the link.

KeymasterIt doesn’t trigger when a ship is scuttled because of a fire mast, right?
Correct. You must reveal it immediately after sinking an enemy ship. For the purposes of the event, the ship doesn’t get credit for the sinking retroactively from the scuttling. (especially because that scuttle can be avoided if the ship can row to safety/etc)
You may reveal this event immediately after one of your ships sinks an enemy ship
It is sunk by a hit, scuttling removes the sinking attribution from the ship effectively doing the sinking. (starting to go on a Captain Jack ramble XD)
(99% sure, hopefully Woelf will confirm)

KeymasterCan’t wait to see her linked crew.
Xioli Cranos was posted a while back, which I why I didn’t post him with the ship. It’s actually kind of a bad link due to a duplicate ability, so some edit may happen.
It’s unlikely I’ll have much time to post customs for the next 2 days, so I’m just getting them out of the way now.

KeymasterAlso, you can’t mark it explored with a crew like James Cook and dock a ship at it. You have to have made an actual explore action.
I’m not sure why that wouldn’t work. The Rules/Code says:
• You must have a ship docked at a wild island you have explored in order to build a fort there.
–One of your ships must have explored the island.
Code on S-Exploring:
-This ability does not provide an explore action and does not allow you to look at any treasure on the island. It only allows the placement of an “explored” marker, which will allow your ships to explore as a free action when they dock at the island.
Once they dock there it is explored as a free action, meaning it has been explored before the end of turn when the fort would be built.
I’m not sure why that wouldn’t work; hopefully Woelf will chime in on this one too.

KeymasterAn update on my custom fantasy set, Pirates of the Epic Seas!
😀 The set has reached 1,000 total game pieces!! Check out how your favorite factions are doing! The set may never be “done”, but at this point I’ve exhausted most of the extremely numerous ideas I’ve had for the set, and marks the beginning of what will probably be (for real this time, I think XD) a general slowdown in the creation of new fantasy customs. However, I plan to keep “releasing” them here in this thread at a rate of at least one per day to accompany the historical customs. Thanks for checking out my stuff and feedback is welcome.
Ben
KeymasterAlso @Ben: Did a piece that I made inspire one of yours? (at least name-wise)
I’m not totally sure at this point, but I think I vaguely thought of your fort when I was coming up with mine.

Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Viking

KeymasterSince then I’ve been using any cardboard, cardstock or flat colored piece of trash.
Interesting! To make islands, or icebergs?
I agree that custom islands and terrain can be extremely difficult to transport very much, between the size and fragility. I’ve “traveled” with a separate box of terrain equally as large as the box I use for all the rest of the Pirates stuff.
Ben
KeymasterI think this place is the best and easiest to find forum for pirates
Awesome, thanks! Glad to hear that. Out of curiosity, did you find the site through a Google search? (or other similar engine)
I’m really happy to be ranking 4th in Google right now for “Pirates CSG”, behind only MT, eBay, and Wikipedia. “Pirates CSG Forum” shows up with my site as #1; now it’s just a matter of me concentrating on the other names of the game for keywords. (Wizkids Pirates + etc)
Ben
KeymasterI just finished reposting my fleets from MT in the Fleets category here! 😀 Before too long I may also post the fleets I posted earlier in this thread.
Ben
KeymasterWell I went ahead and bought Le Loup-Garou anyway.
Funny enough I just posted about LLG since Economy Edition is one of the only games I’ve used her in. It does look like an amusing fleet, and one I certainly wouldn’t expect.

Opposing captains always experience disaster when they encounter this odd vessel. Even the most well-trained gun crews in the Royal Navy experience unexpected mental blunders and massive physical errors when matched up with the Fiasco. Even more bizarre is her tendency to create shipwrecks without her enemies running aground.

KeymasterSpeaking of funky, the Fiesta is very odd. Why does she have the ‘crew of any nationality’ if crew can’t use their abilities on he anyway, what would stop you from putting non-Spanish crew on her?
Cuz I’m silly. XD I was going purely thematic without thinking about how all the abilities interacted with each other. However, I think I’ll leave it, because that way if the “crew can’t use A’s” ability is cancelled, that would allow crew of any nationality to use their abilities as normal. XD Honestly it’s one of my least favorite customs in the entire set and I’m not opposed to just deleting it if it gets too weird.
Nice fort, similar name to one of JWDarkhurst’s; in English it was ‘Church on the cliff by the sea’, and had extended range and six cannons I think.
I had a vague thought about that one when I was making it. 🙂
Good news about Epic Seas coming soon.
Ben
KeymasterEdit: Can someone tell me why my posts end up with their text format visible as code?
The quoting system doesn’t work well right now, possibly because of the Visual vs. Text editors being different. It’s one of many things I hope to fix in the future.
The best way to still be able to quote someone’s post is to paste as plain text with ctrl+shift+v instead of ctrl+v. (on a PC anyway)
Ben
KeymasterThe Triomphe is weird to me. Not much cargo, good cannons and speed. The Link is what makes this weird, since you could fit a HUGE number of named crew on this. Just thinking as I type, if the princess is placed on her, then the possibilities get even wackier.
Links are still weird to me.
-Multiple different crew may be linked to a single ship at once, but each crew can link with only one other crew or ship at a time unless an ability specifically allows additional links to be created.
To me that’s one of the most confusing things in the Pirate Code. I’m changing the link to “Any 1 French named crew”, which I think was my intention in the first place. I may have to also edit some other ship links so they’re not gamebreaking.
Oceania is a little funky, but I’m trying to make all of my 10 masters different from each other. With the amount I’ve created (~30!!), that’s becoming more difficult. XD
Fiesta
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Spanish

Crew of any nationality can use their abilities on this ship. Enemies get -1 to their d6 rolls against this ship. If this ship is not assigned at least 2 crew, this ship cannot be given actions.Flavor text: The Fiesta is “one big party”. All manner of goods and vices are found aboard, but this has resulted in the ship becoming nearly unseaworthy. However, hearing of the good times, sailors from all over the world flock to the ship in droves. The distinctive atmosphere shocks even those who detest the Spanish, and “enemies” often join in the revelry. It remains to be seen what will become of this oddity.
Maybe a terrible ship, but I really don’t want it to be abused for gold.

KeymasterFlavor text kinda makes me want to see the Bilnami as a Junk. not very good cannons, but decent speed and a built in explorer, all for the cheap cost of 10 points. I think I’d toss on a helmsman and be done with her, she’s perfect for 40-50 point games.
Good points! The cannons average out to rank-3 which isn’t terrible. I feel like she’s slightly worse but similar to the East Wind – a potential low-cargo hybrid that isn’t awesome but gets overlooked. Surprised you didn’t react to the Rage of Atlantis (no problem, just figured you’d find it interesting); I may just make her Cursed.

KeymasterIs Ghost Ship worth 6 points? I feel like it should be 2.
I’d say it’s worth 2 or 3. Ignoring terrain was priced at 3 by Wizkids but should have been 2; since Ghost Ship is a little bit better, 3 makes sense. (I suppose 1 and 2 would work as well) Ralph David in BC has it for 8. XD
Ben
KeymasterReally bad. The ship’s only real strength is her speed. Ghost Ship is overpriced and sounds way better than it actually is. The ship is worth maybe 8-9 points. For example, HMS Nautilus is correctly priced (IMO) at 10 points, but far superior due to cannons and lower cost.
La Republique is actually better than LLG if you ask me. Not a great ship by any means, but a very unique support gunship in a deathmatch or larger game where your game isn’t dependent on her. LLG is 10 points more and doesn’t even have a clear role. Way too expensive as a gold runner, not enough cargo/combos to be a hybrid, and relatively weak cannons. Also, the Republique can be copied to max out Cursed dreadnought builds. The Delacroix is a far better 17 point French ship with 3 cargo to put a bunch of crew on.
I think the Corsairs are all about getting gold, mostly through exploring. I feel less incentive to board if I know I can’t eliminate a mast via ramming first. Not being pinned is nice, but the Corsairs also sometimes lack the size and Hoarding Gold type abilities that would make them a better boarding faction. I’ve always wondered why only 1 of their 4 masters got more than 4 cargo, while they have a bunch of 2 and 3 masters with 5 cargo.

KeymasterWeird thread but I like it lol
As I may have said here or at MT, I’ve got a LOT of different thread ideas to share over the months (and probably years). From past experience at MT, releasing a lot of stuff all at once is worse for engagement, plus I’d rather spread things out at this point anyway.
