Ben started the topic Real life naval strategies/themes in Pirates? in the forum Pirates CSG 6 years, 12 months ago
As an enthusiast of naval history and especially the Age of Sail, it’s always interesting to think about strategies or ideas that can be implemented into Pirates CSG.
Wind is probably the most obvious, and I’ve used it as a house rule in the ECG and 6×150 with success. Return fire and the line of battle are some of the most common ideas.
One…[Read more]

It’s great that bbpress comes with the option for adding pictures to forum posts, but I’ve had a few people ask me how to add pictures to forum posts.
At the far right of the Visual post editor, you can click the button for inserting an image.
Source: This will be the image URL’s direct link. Generally a url generated by the image host…[Read more]

Long story short: I want to use a modified (and very simplifgied) version of Pirates CSG to teach the first module of a short linear algebra course.
Certainly a unique approach! I like how you’re combining the game with something they’ll be learning regardless. Definitely “never woulda thought o’ that!” 😀

Welcome aboard!
I’m a university teacher and stumbled across Pirates CSG while searching for miniatures to use as teaching aids in a class of linear algebra for biologists. Sorry to say I haven’t played it yet but I hope I can dupe my better half into playing next weekend :-D.
Feel free to use my tutorial videos since you’re new. You can also p…[Read more]

What exactly counts as a defensive ability here? Specifically, ships that need to be hit twice in the same shoot action to lose a mast, would those be “immune” to Broadsides Attack or would the keyword cancel that ability?
BA ignores that ability, but doesn’t cancel it. (since it would still work against other ships not using BA on that same tur…[Read more]

Very impressive effort by the Galeon de Gibraltar.
Some of those Spanish customs look absolutely amazing. The Bretwalda’s sails really make any ship look epic. I’m surprised by how much I like the contrast of the red and white sails on at least one of the custom Spanish 5’s.
Pirate raid on the French reminds me of CTO, though not with as hasty…[Read more] -

Instead of galleys not being able to ram I was going to change it to only galleys can ram. It seems to make sense to me thematically and for gameplay reasons, makes 1 masters better. But does this make the Barbary pirates too powerful?
I think all ships should definitely be ABLE to ram, because it’s historically accurate and boarding should be…[Read more]

@Vax: Welcome aboard! Glad you’re back into it!
You could try Points in play + gold for the win. Emphasizes captures and combat.
Assuming your friends have not played before, I would keep the build total to no more than 50 points. (30 or 40 might work better for their first game) With teaching, rules questions, and building ships/fleets, it…[Read more]

For those of you that enjoy playing deathmatches, the Defence of St. Helens scenario is a good one.
The previous post in this thread was a preview for a game I completed in September 2019: 6×150

Love the photography even more on this one, great thumbnail too!
Neat to see the sea monster squadron again after a few years.
4:34 Beautiful and epic!
Interesting to see the rise of the Pirates… looks like the English could do some megalaunches if they really want to go after the French.
For a moment in that picture where the English are…[Read more] -

My question concerns using the unreleased Fort St. Phillip (in a draft of Revolution) in conjunction with native canoes. (now that I think about it, El Puerto Blanco has the same ability)
Fort St. Phillip

Ben started the topic Buy/Sell/Trade collection-based Master Spreadsheet? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years ago
I’m working on an alternate Master Spreadsheet that is designed for collecting and trading. You can see it here.
For now only the first set has the extra columns – once the format is good enough, I’ll add it to the others and make it more available as a .xlsx file.
Questions:
Are those 5 columns enough? Is the order good? Do you rec…[Read more]

Apologies for the errors in the Master Spreadsheet. I just uploaded a new .xlsx file to the homepage with the following corrections: Duex-Deux, The Red Skull instead of The Cursed, Alquimista speed from L to S+L, added Fort Brompton’s cannons, changed CC #123 from “Specialist” to Cannoneer.
The shared spreadsheet is always corrected first so…[Read more]

@CrimsonChance: Welcome aboard matey! Glad to have you aboard.
I agree that the individual ship artwork is part of what makes the game special. Oftentimes people call the ships cool for their design and size, but the very unique artwork on each is a beautiful aspect of the game.

That is wild. Seems like it must be quite rare if nobody so far has even seen anything like it. (also seems too early to start an April Fool’s joke :p )
I just PM’d Holofernes and old_man to alert them to this mystery!

Ahoy matey!! 😀
I originally got into the game when the Crimson Coast came out and all my friends were collecting cards and I wasn’t allowed to have Pokemon cards so I naturally shifted to Pirates.
That is interesting… I know Pokemon has some weird similarities to dogfighting and poaching, but it still seems more reasonable for a child than p…[Read more]
