I hate to ask a follow up question (mostly bc you were kind enough to answer my previous question regarding Baturawa and Munchhausen), but looking at the images in the thread it would seem that Le Jongleur and Hanno are galleys but lack the Galley keyword. I’m assuming Phlegyas is as well, as I didn’t see an image of it. Is this a similar situation to Carolina from Rev which is a schooner model but does not have the keyword deliberately? And if so, does this mean that by design it cannot move S without it’s mast as other Galleys do?

Per The Pirate Code, Hanno and Phlegyas should have Galley.  Presumably Jongleur too but it’s not in the Code.  There were some really weird botches/glitches with MI LE’s.  (arguably including the point costs, most of which should just be cut in half)

According to the master rules sheet Hanno and Phrygias lacking the galley keyword is a mistake. AFAIK no ships with the galley look are not supposed to have the galley keyword, the way Carolina has a schooner design but no keyword.

    Hey Guys!

I found something that is quite interesting…

    ref=sr_1_6

This picture is of what Wizkids intended on having for the artwork of ROTF Mega Pack.

If you look closely you can see that it says “Collect All Nine Exclusive Cards!”

And, “2 Player Mega Pack” Up in the corner.

And if you want the artwork try this link right Here.

Why is SCS so expensive again? I assume because it’s rarer than other packs, but how come? Shorter print? More popular?

    Shorter print?

This is the most common I’m aware of.  I can actually vouch for it a bit too, since I did buy packs of BC and DJC SE boxes back in the day, but I can’t recall seeing SCS and I know I didn’t buy any.  (there is a chance I just didn’t go to the store when it was there, but it doesn’t seem like it was there long)

I’ve been trying to find a way to make the most effective use out of the swap ability of things like David “Bones” Wiley and L’Artesien, but the more I try to make it work, the weaker the ability seems. At least L’Artesien is an otherwise great ship. But right now I’m struggling with Wiley. So far my best idea has been to put him and Lucky on board the Raven’s Nest, but in that case the Raven’s Nest is a good gunship already and can probably just take out treasure runners outright. Maybe on something like the Amity, which can duck in, swap, and get out while preventing a boarding through ghost ship?

The Raven’s Neck is a decent ship to attempt it with, but it’s just a poor ability in general.  I price it at 1 point instead of 3 on my customs.

The problem is that you have to know you’ll make some kind of profit from the trade.  It becomes essential to know what the other ship has, though you could try to trade a 1 for anything you might get in return (of course, you could still get a 0 coin lol).

What’s more interesting in my opinion is trying to use the ability with UT’s.  For example, from Woelf’s Rum Bomb idea (in the zip folder) you can trade Rum to an opponent to freeze their ship for a turn. (potentially allowing you to steal their entire ship and thus get the Rum back so it’s not gone XD)

@Jack I think the best way to preform the Swap is to get a fast and sturdy ship like the Akua Lapu then, you jam some crew on like David Bones Wiley + Helmsman + Explorer. Then you go fetch some trashy coins like a 0, 1 or, 2 then go run past a merchant ship (Preferably) at S+S+S speed and initiate the swap.

Thats how I think that ability should be used at least.

The rum bomb idea is nasty. I have the Buried Treasure and Plunder UTs, but both are pretty scratched to the point where I’d unfairly know where they are right away. I actually almost bought rum the other day but opted for explosives instead.

Akua Lapu is also interesting for not sacrificing cargo space but maintaining speed, though I own nothing past the POTC pack. Right now I’m thinking I stick with the Raven’s Neck then since it can double as a gunship, because the rum bomb idea actually makes putting Wiley on a gunship make sense.

In your opinions, if Papa Doc, Tabatha McWarren, Devereaux, Wraith, and Sammy the Skull have “flagships” or “signature ships”, what are they. I assume Sammy’s is likely to be the Grim Reaper or the Crushed Skull.

Wraith’s is the Deliverance, but the Crimson Angel stole it from him.

Pirate Deveraux’s signature ship to me is the Hades Flame. Ghost ship treasure runner fits his aesthetic very well.

I think, lore wise, cursed Devereaux is captaining the Specter, it has the exact same goal in it’s story as devereaux is given in his flavor text.

Ok just so everyone is aware, (@Ben mainly)

Not to be bothersome, but are there additional “keywords” some people use for longer abilities that aren’t on the list. I have seen the keywords and slang-words list but I kind of feel that a few additional abilities with extensive card texts could probably be summarized with shorter key-phrases, HI Raiders could probably just have the keyword “Raider”, for example.

Idk, just spit-balling some ideas… I’m kinda new to this more well thought out play style so I’m sure those who use the names they do have their reasons backed by experience. Just a personal idea to better categorize ships and crew.

(This ship ignores the first his she takes as long as she has all her masts)[Ironsides],

(This ship cannot be shot at by ships within S of her)[Agile]

(After this ship resovles a shoot action, she may move as a free action/Reverse-captain)[Swift]

I agree with that in general, but not with your specific examples.  I can explain.  🙂

HI Raiders could probably just have the keyword “Raider”, for example.

This makes me think of any ability that steals gold.  I know that Filching Gold and Hoard/Hoarding Gold already have keywords, but things like “UT Hoard” and “randomly take as much treasure as this ship can carry” do not.  Raider is very generic.  The HI part in front helps to distinguish it, and also helps to separate it from what I call “HI Hoard” (steal as much treasure as you can from an enemy HI, rather than just 1 coin at a time).

(This ship ignores the first his she takes as long as she has all her masts)[Ironsides],

In the past I have seen “Ironsides” used to describe the Acorazado’s 2 hits/mast ability.  It’s too long for my liking, but “Ignores First Hit” would clear up confusion a lot better.

(This ship cannot be shot at by ships within S of her)[Agile]

How would you distinguish this from L-immunity? (L-range cannons cannot hit this ship.)

(After this ship resovles a shoot action, she may move as a free action/Reverse-captain)[Swift]

Swift implies a speed boost of some kind.  Reverse Captain is extremely logical (the reverse or opposite of Captain) and is one of the least likely to ever be “changed”.

I hope you see what I mean.  🙂   Many more abilities could have keywords or shortened text, but it’s not worth it if it just confuses people.

Wizkids did have more ability names when they made things, but I’m glad that some of them didn’t make it into the official game text (for similar reasons).

I’ve always found it weird how SAT got a keyword (Born Leader) but the any action twice crew didn’t.

On a different note, in the interest of avoiding double posting: I’ve decided I don’t think I want to buy singles from CC (aside from tracking down the French forts) or MI anymore. My collection for SM, RU, and BC is large enough that buying packs would usually result in redundancies, and I generally don’t enjoy fantasy so buying packs of anything after DJC is risky. But for CC and MI it’s still small enough that I can get that joy of pack opening without worrying too much about getting a duplicate. I know at least @Ben kinda hates MI but I love it. I like Jules Verne/steampunk and always found the submarines really cool, especially compared to the crimes against nature WK did in later sets with new ship types.

No I see what you mean, like I said, I’m new to the more tactical aspect of the game and understand that those who have played likely have terms for these effects and reasons they use such terms, so I understand.

On a few completely unrelated notes, The early sets appear to be based off realistic or fictional regions of the ocean during the age of sail, so what area of the ocean is the crimson coast, judging by the addition of the French I assume the cajun south of america.

In a similar vein, I’m actually surprised thinking back that there wasn’t really a set based around the indian ocean or spice trade, which would have undoubtedly added either the Portuguese or dutch factions, which are conspicuously missing despite their prevalence during the age.

Just like with the factions, I “like” all the sets at this point.  Feelings of frustration have severely dimmed over time.  🙂   MI to me has drab artwork in a lot of cases (at least for the ships), mediocre ships, and not a ton to get excited about.

I can’t recall but I remember the flavor text for CC helping out with that.

I’d always thought the Crimson Coast referred to the English channel, but there’s flavor text on several CC pieces indicating it’s still just the New World/Caribbean.

I’m looking into maybe starting work on my own custom set focused around the protuguese, so I have two questions.

1: Is there a comprehensive (or moderately so) guide to the creation of custom ships/crew/etc. point wise?

2: Is the custom thread a good place to post new ship type ides for review by experienced players?

No.  The first tab of the Customs Database has a bit of what I often price certain abilities at.

2: Is the custom thread a good place to post new ship type ides for review by experienced players?

    Definitely.  The best place!  😀

@Mr. Wick, I found this thing out a while ago.

    Just take a ship that has the ability of a crew like;

    Le Soleil Royal

    Point cost: 13

Ability: Once per turn when this ship hits an enemy ship, also eliminate one crew from that ship.

The ability shown above is  3 Points, And I’m saying this because the text says; “Once per turn” unlike Cargo Wrecking how it says; “When this ship hits an enemy ship”.

So back to the Soleil Royal, This ship without it’s ability is 10 Points, I know that sounds odd but looking at the Pyre, this ship’s ability is Ghost ship, Which according to Wizk!dz Ghost Ship is 8 whopping Points. So Pyre is supposedly 6 Points without the Ghost Ship keyword.
