@J.: Welcome!
I stopped playing after the sea monsters were released because finding players to play was becoming increasingly difficult.
In your area, do you think that was because of the sea monsters, or just declining popularity of the game in general?
No gameboard is needed and I like how miniatures give me a sense of being high in the sky.
I enjoy that too – the scale of the game is great for naval scenarios and fleet actions.
I Googled info on POTSM in November or December of 2018, found your site and it’s the only Pirates CSG site that I knew of before reading some of this topic’s 2nd and 3rd entries today.
Great to know, thanks. I’m happy to have gotten rankings in Google.
@Ve1m: Great to see you back on board! 🙂I also do some miniature painting and terrain making and want to full-fill my 14 year dream of making an epic custom game board for pirates in 2019.
Nice! That can be very fun, and it might inspire you to play, accomplishing two goals at once! 😀

The game’s declining popularity in general.
February 28, 2019 at 4:32 PM #3417MikeParticipantHello Everyone!
My name is Mike but I am known by Greenie. I found this forum by posting about selling my collection through Geekway in St. Louis MO.
I am a original collector. Pirates of the Spanish Main was third in my “original WizKids” collection. I was a envoy for Star Wars PocketModels. I am one of a half dozen people in the world to have a complete collection of the Star Wars Series along with lots of promos.
I also have both full series of Nascar RaceDay through WizKids.Sadly, I am at a point I am trying to sell out my Pirates and Star Wars. They sit in totes now and do nothing. However, I joined up just to find more people who loved the originals as much as I did.
February 28, 2019 at 6:11 PM #3418Matt LovellParticipantWelcome aboard!
Pocket Model promos you say? May just have to message you about that. Sounds like you’d be someone that might have an actual accurate list for SW:PM and not just rumors.

Hello fellow pirate! That’s what this site is for – the love of Pirates CSG! 😀 Feel free to jump into the other topics on the game to provide your insight and opinion.
March 1, 2019 at 12:00 AM #3424RobertParticipantMike, I thought i was the only one who collected those Nascar pocketmodels!
cool to see that someone else did!March 1, 2019 at 3:45 PM #3434MikeParticipantMatt ~ There is a community for Star Wars PocketModels similar to this.
http://swpocketmodels.com/forum/index.phpRobert ~ I have both Series and all promos for RaceDay. I also have around 10 unopened Dale Earnhardt Box sets.
March 6, 2019 at 9:46 PM #3547MechavelliParticipantHey guys, new guy here. My name’s Mechavelli, it came from my love of Niccolo Machiavelli- I just stylized his name haha. I got into Pirates a couple months back, and it was completely at random. I was out with some friends buying miniatures and comics, and we’d been browsing a couple stores by the time we came to this random gun store/comic shop (weird, I know lol) and I found a single SM pack on the counter. It was going to $3, and as I looked it over and read the back, I realized that this sounded like the kind of game I’ve always wanted to play. I’m big on 40k and other miniature games but haven’t started collecting, so Pirates was my first time actually getting game pieces. Collecting these guys, assembling them, and then playing actual games… man. What a treat! It’s exactly what I’ve always wanted 🙂
Lastly, I consider myself more of a player than a collector. I like having rare ships and stuff for sure, and I have a display binder for faceplates and portraits, but I don’t buy minis to display them- I immediately pop them out and assemble them if I want to keep them!

March 6, 2019 at 9:49 PM #3550MechavelliParticipantOh man, Star Wars pocket models?? I’m checking this out immediately! I love this whole assembling and playing style of game!
March 6, 2019 at 9:51 PM #3551JackParticipantHi hi.
I would die if I found a store that still sold any Pirates CSG stuff. I honestly always have this little bit of hope whenever I go into a store that I’ll find one.
I got into the game after Crimson Coast came out, my aunt and uncle gave me a pack of it and Spanish Main and I was hooked instantly. I also play more than collect. I finally got my hands on a copy of Zephyr last night and I popped that sucker out right away.
March 6, 2019 at 10:01 PM #3553MechavelliParticipantI’m looking for upwards of 30+ minis on MT, it just goes to show how much I want to play lol. I’ve got plans for French, English, Pirate, and Barbary Corsair fleets, along with smaller Spanish and mixed fleets. I played my first game a few weeks ago and won it, but then midterm season hit us and we couldn’t get together for lack of time. Now that it’s over I can’t wait to get back to playing!
March 6, 2019 at 11:03 PM #3557BenKeymaster@Mechavelli: Neat story! Glad to have you aboard.
I honestly always have this little bit of hope whenever I go into a store that I’ll find one.
I often glance down the card aisle at Target just to glimpse the Pokemon and Yugioh stuff, but I never really stop anymore. I got some Fairfield boxes at a different Target in late 2011 and now I just think “been there, checked that”. XD
Now that it’s over I can’t wait to get back to playing!
Huzzah! Go forth new pirate! XD Feel free to post summaries in the Battle Reports thread if you want.
March 13, 2019 at 8:36 PM #3738Conor WardeParticipantHello folks,
I’m Conor, I first started playing Pirates, with my dad back when it first came out. My dad and I played it pretty regularly until the game was discontinued. I’ve just recently stumbled upon my old ships and ordered some unopened packs for both the nostalgia as well as indoctrinating my nephew into the glory of table-top gaming. I’d consider myself primarily a gamer, but I do enjoy the collecting aspect.
Pleasure to meet you all!

March 15, 2019 at 12:15 AM #3751-aldhiyb-ParticipantHello,
Thanks for letting me join — I was referenced here by my cousin, who goes by El Tiburon. He and I have been playing this game since it was first released, which over the years it’s become more and more difficult to find people that either still play or have even heard of it. Safe to assume you all know this, which is why we are all here.
I used to have a massive collection, but over the years I gave most away or sold it off. Mostly because it became too difficult to find players (especially after Savage Shores) and because I’ve dwindled my fleet down to what I tend to enjoy playing with. The rest I handed off as initial incentives to get new folks to start.
My favorite faction are the Barbary Corsairs, to which I use the majority of the time. When that set was released, I remember the majority of the community were not pleased with them but I had found what I was looking for and have relished in in their effectiveness (and sometimes challenges) since. I don’t really enjoy sailing any of the big 6 (i’ve kept a little Spanish and Pirate) but I do have a soft spot for the minor factions.
In order I would say my preference would be this:
1) Barbary Corsairs, 2) Jade Rebellion, 3) Vikings, 4) Spanish, 5) Mercenaries and 6) Pirates
I enjoy this game for a few reasons, mostly the human interaction… which in this day & age tends to grow less and less with online gaming being more prevalent… albeit the boardgame wave of innovation that came from Europe is still rising. Also, I enjoy history and appreciate what the developers have done in trying to inject some of that flavor in this environment.
50% Collector / 50% Player and I will certainly be trying to get VASSAL to work soon as the availability of players in my local area is super rare to none.
Thank you again, looking forward to perusing through the massive vault of info here.

Love hearing that.
Nice to hear from someone who isn’t obsessed with Big 4 overpowered combos in all of their games. The Corsairs are excellent and fun to use.

Same here! I actually talked about that a little on a recent podcast with one of the game designers.
April 6, 2019 at 2:48 PM #4121clm1977ParticipantHello there,
I recently got introduced to this game by finding a box of ships and cards sat on the top shelf of a local Goodwill. I found the first small storage tote a week back and dug into it sorting and recarding what I could so the mass of ships were not overbearing. It seemed to be primarily davys curse with some mysterious islands. A few days after that I went back and found another tote which when sorted into the first set seemed to be the other half of the persons collection.
Out of all of it there is nearly a complete set of curse with a good pile of mysterious island.. all for the low low price of $16 heh. I have so far put more into that buying some missing cards on ebay… and a value box that just showed up today that was still sealed and missing the punched cards for the Boneyard out of the sealed box. Grrr :p Everything was still in place and sealed other then that.
I am still learning and reading up all these rules and watching csg stuff on the tube, man I wish I had found this stuff EARLIER lol.

April 6, 2019 at 8:10 PM #4122BenKeymasterWelcome Chris! That’s an amazing deal you got to get nearly all of DJC and some MI for only $16! Look forward to hearing about your piratey adventures.
April 6, 2019 at 8:51 PM #4123clm1977ParticipantSo do I.. I think I may have over-complicated myself getting tubs full of ships and cards and am now confused where to start lol…
Well that is other then start looking for places to not go broke getting more stuff for it 🙂
I have been downloading various pdf rulesets I have found around here and other sites. we will see how it goes. I am a few episodes through your hourly campaign series…

Getting yourself organized is a good idea. My Fleet Review page may help a tiny bit.
Awesome, you can find all the main rules and additions on the homepage of the site here. I’d recommend getting the basics down for a bunch of games before going into anything different. (house rules/etc)

Cool, thanks! I will admit it’s getting slightly boring from lack of combat/developments, but it’s the type of game I love because of how long it takes. If you’d like something far more interesting (THC will pick up, just not quickly and not suddenly), I’d recommend the campaign games listed in my Battle Reports Compendium. It’s a collection of my best battle reports from over the years and will take less time to consume more content. (with the possible exception of Command the Oceans of course, which was just bonkers-crazy XD)
May 1, 2019 at 2:29 PM #4380Fitzroy_McCandlessParticipantHey there!
I’ve used this sight a few times for reference and such as I have got back into the game recently. I’m about 50/50 player and collector and I started playing near launch when I was a young kid. I found a few wholesale stores that had displays left over from the hayday of wizkids csg’s and bought a bunch (now have means and whole lot of nostalgia for the game, that and I was a big fan of their star wars game as well). I recently bullied my younger sister into playing it with me again anf we enjoyed it more as adults than we did as kids. I think I have about 1k ships in my collection, combination from what survived my childhood and what I have been able to find since. The thing I love about this game so much is it’s versatility but simplicity. It is probably the best tabeltop bridge game I’ve ever encountered. It’s a great game to play if you want to get more into complex tabletop games like Dnd but are a little intimidated by all the rules, abilities and dice. That and you can scale the game as much as you like, I’ve played massive 500 point games before with friends that took a weekend of on and off play as well as designing little campaigns with set fleets and crew.
Overall I have always loved this game and kinda amazed there is still a community for it!

Yikes. 🙁 Nobody should be forced to play a game they don’t want to play.

Sounds familiar. 😀 Feel free to post how your games went in the Battle Reports thread.
May 8, 2019 at 8:51 AM #4449Captain VendariParticipantI don’t believe I’ve posted in this thread yet. In fact, I only recently managed to get my account working here. Not sure what was up, but Word Press wouldn’t let me log in by any means for a while and I just kind of forgot.
I’m Captain Vendari, reforming Pirates enthusiast. My interest in this game ebbs and flows, but for now the tide is high!
May 14, 2019 at 10:37 AM #5025jetmoto-1996ParticipantWhats up people,
I used to flirt around with MT over the years due to it being the best resource for Pirates CSG related things. Never really got too involved though. I ran across this site and really thought it was pretty neat!
I’ve been playing pirates since i was pretty young, i think around 2005 my friends introduced me to it. I played countless matches of pirates as a kid. I started as a pure player just trying to get my hands on any crew or ship that would allow me to wreck my friends fleets. However i have transitioned to the collected phase at this point. Mainly trying to fill in my minor faction collections.
My favorite expansions are SCS, DJC, MI, and FN. I love the Vikings and Jade Rebellion, as for the major factions i lean to the cursed predominately.
The fact that so many people still care about this game just goes to show how amazing it was and still is and i am glad to find people who still care about it so passionately!
Finally, my user name comes from an old PS1 classic franchise called JetMoto. I love the classic Playstation stuff.
Thanks for all the effort you have all put into keeping Pirates Alive!

June 21, 2019 at 3:43 AM #6234Kevin loweParticipantHi!
This is a fantastic site! Very well done for taking the time and effort to keep this great old game from dying completely.
Let me introduce myself.
Some may already have traded with me over the years at MT & TCO.
My name is Kevin Lowe and I reside in Grays, Essex, United Kingdom.
Any other Brits here by any chance?
I got into the game when base 2nd edition was released when I spotted packs for sale at a large newsagent chain. Very unusual for this to happen I must say!
Further purchases along the way via ebay & specialist shops as well as trades has led me to where I am today.
Still not completed many of the sets so if anyone has any to sell trade please let me know!

Not sure about here yet. From the looks of it, some of the Pirates CSG fans from the UK haven’t been around the online community in a while.
