    Welcome aboard!

Slowly converting my Jade Rebellion fleet into 3D painted ships.

How is the painting process going?  Are you using PLA?

Can a crew captured via the Possession ability be transferred to a friendly ship of the same nationality and use their abilities on the second ship?  The Code entry for Wraith makes me think not, but nothing in the Possession ability forbids it.

    Awesome, hyped for CoEC!

Glad that army units have to move around on islands for positioning. Excited for some potential land combat.  Might see a Marine leading an infantry division or something.  I could see a strong faction dedicating a few small ships just to search for Weapons that are later transferred to monster gunships.

After using Towing Option #1 from the Reference Diagrams (initiate towing when already touching a derelict’s bow at the beginning of a move action), can you immediately drop the tow in order to not have your base move limited to S, or is your base move limited to S during that move action?

Granted, I can’t think of any good reasons not to place them all, aside from being short on physical markers or tokens to actually represent them.

The silly Pirates nerd in me is trying to think of a reason to not place all of them.  I assume since each token is considered a UT that they’re not considered “available gold” for endgame conditions?  If you know you have a lead but a weakened fleet and your opponent has an HI Raider, you might want to end the game as fast as possible, in which case less turtles could help.

@Skelebone: Nice to see so many new customs!  With customs feedback I generally prefer to recommend only point cost adjustments so everything else with the game piece can stay the same, barring any broken abilities/etc.  Here are my thoughts:

    Gladan: 6 points
Turuma keyword is neat, I’d be interested to try out the rotation movement.
Otto Gustaf Nordenskold: 6 or 7 points, as Canceller is certainly worth 5+ on its own.
    Azov: 13 points
    Captain Ramius: 8 points
    Nachtkrapp: 4 points
Roter Teufel: Have a feeling this could come down to 10 or 11, but would want to playtest first.
    Krikun: 12 points
Hel: 12 points (compare to the Golden Medusa from RV, which I think is good at 15)
Godeke Michels: 6 points (I need to playtest Massacre more but feel Wizkids definitely overpriced it)
Likedeeler: 5 points (^similar for Hoard)
Krampus: can probably get away with 7 points if you want. (ex: Executioner from RV likely not OP at all and is better overall)
SMS Friedrich der Grosse: I think this would be fine at 17 or 18 if you want to lower it.
SMS Falke: 11 points (I see her as a 6 point ship without those abilities)
SMS Schultzie: I would up this to at least 27 for playtesting. HMS Endeavour would still see play at probably 24+ points, and this adds important speed and a cargo space.
Grosse Jacht: 6 points. I would change the second ability to: “If this ship rolls a 6 when shooting, she may be given an extra shoot action.” The intent wasn’t unclear but I wouldn’t want people to interpret it as a global effect (unless I’m mistaken, in which case the ability would be broken heh) Fun flavor text!
SMS Amazone: 8 points. Interesting linked/named crew options….
SMS Luchs: One of the harder ones to judge. I’m wary she’s worth 14-15.
SMS Ludwig II: My fave from the set so far. I’m a sucker for these stacked ships lol no matter the cost. She might even prove herself to be worth 18-19.
The Black Baron should be fun to playtest, the 6 roll reminds me of what I’ve thought about for the historical pirates that captured a ton of prizes in their careers (such as Black Bart, Black Sam Bellamy).
    Fallen Eagle: 16 points
    Polska: 15-16 points
    Prestige: 8 points
    Sudden Death: 13 points
Johanna Hard: 3 points (I’m strongly opposed to how Wizkids costed this.)
    John Derdrake: 5 points
Love the Death’s Hand, nice name for the ship.
    Thorn: 6 points
Captain Leviathan: 9 points (C+H+EA is an amazing package, but the Ransom and Hostile: everyone is ugly enough to probably lower his cost by 1 point. Debatable though since combining the 3 positive abilities into 1 cargo space is probably worth a few points)
I like the tradeoffs of Gunpowder Barrels!
Traitor is interesting since the traitor could be killed in the boarding party in question.
Riches from Distant Lands: I could see this getting messy, regardless of the campaign game implications of sudden windfall riches. It sounds like it would force the next player to reveal how much gold they have. By “held”, is it just gold on their home island or does it include gold on ships, in forts/etc? Such a big reveal might change a game by tipping off other players if they should build a fort, flip Trade Route (UT from SCS), HI raid said player, etc.
False Sighting: A personal nitpick but I think it should trigger on a 1-2 since low rolls are almost always bad in Pirates; high rolls usually signify success.

Cool set and thanks for sharing! 😀 Hopefully my feedback makes sense and doesn’t sound too harsh. 🙂

From today’s game, if a player successfully rolls for SAT, moves with their first action and then has their Captain ability cancelled, can they then choose to NOT repeat the first action (since the ability says “may be given the same action twice”) and instead shoot via the Sac ability?  Or are they locked in once they complete the first action?

The Turtles UT says you can place “up to nine other Turtles”; can you intentionally place any number from 1-10?

Is Odin’s Revenge reusable with Nemo’s Plans?  I assume it would be a once per round option on that player’s turn?

Do you have an official Wizkids cost for the Hoist keyword?

Do you know if the CC Amity (009) has a rarity misprint and was actually uncommon? (instead of common as the red rarity corner shows)

Does towing an enemy derelict count as “capturing” that ship, for the purposes of meeting the requirements of the Ransom keyword?

    Yes.

    @Woelf
: When Unique Treasures are revealed at a wild island, does the exploring player choose the order in which the UT effects are applied?  (I know I’ve asked this before but I can’t find the answer in the Code or through a forum search here)

old_man tells me he has sold his entire Pirates CSG collection with the exception of his custom made Vieil Homme.  🙁   I’m asking about where his SiaB’s and Obago Deuce may have ended up.

    He also said:

everyone can be bought, it only depends only on the amount of money. ?

It was a private sale. Someone contacted me by email and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. The important stuff I shipped to Texas and all the rest I sold privately in Germany.

No word yet on anything else.

From this old FAQ, does this part about Ghost Ships and fog banks still hold true? (for regular fog banks, not those created by smokepot specialists/shot)

Q: If a ship becomes “ghostly” while in a fog bank and is forced to leave the fog bank, where does she exit?

A: She can exit at any point along the edge of the fog bank!

Are there any events that you’ve used before that you feel have added to the game at all or do you think events are just a badly done mechanic in general?

I think they’re a bad mechanic and should be avoided. Some of them feel like magic, such as Becalmed and Hidden Cove (both severely overpowered). I know some abilities behave like magic too, but events have a higher propensity than just about anything else in the game to leave a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.  Plus, it’s one of those gamey issues where if your opponent has any, you feel like you need to have some to compete. A single event can waylay a well-constructed fleet when played at the right time, so if you don’t have a counter (like FotG…) it could be game over.  🙁

Do any of you guys use events at all or do people just generally avoid them?

I hate them and vastly prefer playing games where they are banned (which happens in most of the games I’ve played nowadays).  The last time I used them consistently was just for the competitive fleets in VASSAL Tournament #2, but even then Xerecs and I banned mermaids and FotG.

What other questionable ones are out there that need it, besides the Runes and the Cross?

    Not sure off hand.

-If a UT is loaded facedown and can be revealed voluntarily later, including as a response to an opponent’s actions or effects (such as a die roll), it can be used once per round.

This clears things up!  Thanks.  Now to find more exploits…. 😉

On Nemo’s Plans with Runes of Thor:

Similar applies to these.   You could use it against a ram roll, then a boarding roll, and then a single shoot action roll, but you can’t use it on every single die rolled during a single shoot action.

The discussion from 2020 gave me the impression that this couldn’t be done.  Is there something I’m missing?

I’m assuming you’re probably wanting them for collection purposes so this might not be what you’re looking for, but I thought I’d put a post in case you were just wanting them for actual play.

I would be fine having them punched.  🙂

    @CrazyIvan: Welcome aboard matey!

I think I first played the game some time around 2010 or 2011 when my older brother came across a box of the Pirates of the Caribbean set that was on clearance sale from a stationary store. He bought a couple of packs before we then decided to go back and grab as many as we could. In the end we managed to get our hands on about a box and a half at the price of 50p a pack (about $0.75 at the time).

Nice!  That was definitely the time to collect, as a decade+ later prices have skyrocketed.

We’ve spent about 10 years thinking Maccus is the best crew in the game.

Incredible.  XD   Crazy how much people’s experiences can vary!

The site and all the information here has been hugely helpful in learning more about the game, so I just wanted to say thanks for all the effort you’ve put into it.

Thanks for the kind words and for joining!  RV is certainly one of the best sets and a great way to get back into the game.  🙂

Can a Hoist’s free explore action happen in between its own move segments?  (ex: move S, hoist free explore, move S)

If you cancel the Sea Monster keyword, can you still use an L booster like Jerky Johnson to give it +L?

Yikes, that is a ridiculous point differential. I’ll throw my pirate hat into the ring.

    HMS Rye
El Acorazado + MI Luis Zuan, Nemesio Diaz, BC Dominick Freda, helmsman, oarsman, stinkpot shot
La Belle Etoile + F&S Lenoir, captain, helmsman
Constitution + Jonathan Haraden, OE Montana Mays, BC Diamond Nelson Turner, helmsman, oarsman, stinkpot shot
    Rover + Jonah, Tia Dalma
Jolly Mon + The Hag of Tortuga

Not expecting this to do well, just figured I’d throw a “cancelling cluster” into the mix. Came up with it quick and hoping that the cancellers will help the big baddies to actually get first strikes on some of the opposition to pick them off. Intention is to protect the larger vessels at the start with the Rye and Rover (moving the whole fleet at S speed in a cluster if necessary) in front of the main three.

Something that stayed face-up on an island once revealed.

Not enough to tell if it would be OP or not.  That could be anything from “bring a ship into the game at this island when you roll a 6” to “ships docked here get +1 to their boarding rolls”.
