What happens if players cannot agree on the number of terrain pieces used?

How are mysterious islands handled if some players want to use them and others don’t?

The Eye’s effect only lasts until the end of the player’s own turn.  It does not carry over to opposing player turns, and then has to be reset at the beginning of the player’s next turn, even if they do choose the same ability again.

On a related note, for win condition #3 on page 14, can the phrase “a player” mean the opposing player, or does every “his/her/player” reference in that sentence specifically reference the active player’s turn and no opponents?

I assume there is no way to eliminate the Wolves UT from the same ship that finds it on an island?  I think the free explore would end before you could voluntarily shoot with a musketeer (if you had Captain), and a Marine shot would be a separate action from the explore that reveals the Wolves. (especially for initial discovery of the Wolves)

Is it possible to upload an spread sheet document? That the format I have until I get bact to my computer.

No, but you can try copying and pasting the text from it into a post here, or better yet share a google sheets/etc link to an online version of the spreadsheet.  I can also make a sheet for you in the Customs Database if you want.

    Ahoy there Wayland, welcome aboard!

At this point I just horde my collection. Not many people play here and I play really large games.

Nice, sounds kinda like me!  Feel free to add yourself to the Player Locator Map if you haven’t already.

I occasionally make homebrew ships or try to make a video version of pirates.

Awesome!  We have threads for both if you’d like to share your creations!

After exploring this island, place a treasure coin from your collection with value equal to or less than one you took on the island.

The way it’s written, Mysterious Island #7 would allow you to replace a coin with a UT (likely worth 0 gold).  I’d imagine that’s not the intent, but the 0’s from the last sets would provide a good counterpoint to that.

Can great turtles be moved 5S in a turn by a single set of native canoes?

Sorry if some of these are obvious or repeats.

Does a ship with an Explorer have to look at coins when it docks and explores or can it just mark the island explored?

Do you have to place a ship at a different whirlpool when the Whirlpool UT is triggered?

If a ship is only in contact with a ship stealer such as the Harbinger by the jib/foremast which is subsequently removed, is that ship still considered “in contact” with the Harbinger because that was the previous state of touching?  Similarly, does a mast elimination remove the state of being pinned? (ex: a titan takes out a mast from a ship it pinned in place, and that mast was their only point of contact)

Do sea creature segments block other segments’ lines of fire?  (ex: a titan shooting forward of itself with the outer arms will have a hard time)

Does derelicting a towing ship break the tow?

What are your thoughts on a situation where an optionally loaded UT like Homing Beacon is left on a wild island, only one player knows this and wants to call the game because it’s not worth a gold value? (not callable but this is really interesting given HI Raiders/etc.)
-On that point, does Wine have to be on a home island for the game to end?

If the island treasure trading ability is used to receive a UT that can’t be loaded, does the UT still apply? (and stay on the island, for example with Altar of the Loa)

After looking at treasure on a wild island, you may trade any one treasure from that island for a random treasure on any other wild island. This ship must load the traded treasure.

Do not load this treasure. Instead, place it face up on this island. While docked at this island you may eliminate two crew; if you do, on the next player’s turn you may choose to give actions to his or her ships or choose that he or she gets no actions at all.

    Altar Abuse (40 point standard)
Hai Peng + Bartholomew Roberts, helmsman, explorer, oarsman
Patagonia + Robinson, Administrator Scott Bratley, Lord Mycron
Bloody Jewel + helmsman, explorers x2, oarsmen x2
Treasure contribution: Altar of the Loa, Maps of Alexandria, Pirate Globe, Marksman’s Map, Abandoned Oarsman, three 5’s
Forts on hand: all Pirate and English forts

Strategy: Hai Peng zooms to island closest to enemy HI (overall speed of L+S+L+S x2). If you find the Altar on an island closer to your opponent than your own HI, use Black Bart to toss it closer to home where the Bloody Jewel can abuse it soonest. Between the Maps and Globe, the Altar should be located quickly. Once the Altar is found and in a spot you like it, the Bloody Jewel has 4 crew to sac for 2 turns of complete control of the enemy. In a 40 point game with the Hai Peng flying around at mach speed, this should be enough to win you the game. If not, the remaining crew on your two Pirate ships and the abandoned oarsman could give an additional 2-3 turns of mind control, plenty of time to secure enough gold to win.

Biggest issues include your opponent including a bevy of negative UT’s that are too numerous for Bart to trade away, slowing down the Hai Peng. Don’t want the HP to get clobbered on opponent’s first turn if they go second, so you might have to play it safe (premeasuring would be big, and anticipating enemy crew setups for double action potential) and not explore the island closest to their HI on the first turn if you go first. If you go second, it might be advantageous to attempt to explore two wild islands regardless of proximity, just to double your chances of directly finding the Altar in round 1.

Thought about including Hidden Cove, but it starts to cramp how many crew you’ll have to sac at the Altar, or at least the speed of the ship getting to the Altar. With the final 12 points you could swap out BJ+crew for Hidden Cove, Banshee’s Cry + 3 1 point crew, and Coeur du Lion + 2 1 point crew. This would likely be worth it if HC allowed the HP to explore BOTH of the wild islands closest to the enemy HI during round 1. But I like the Bloody Jewel moving at S+L+S compared to two 1 masters both moving slower than that to reach the Altar island. It might be good to swap the Marksman’s Map for an abandoned explorer, simply because that UT would be slow to find the Altar compared to the “reveal all” duo that could make it irrelevant. Simply having a build total of 50 or 60 points would vastly increase the amount of Altar-sac options. One strength of this fleet is that it could win even without Altar abuse, simply because of the speed and OP game pieces getting gold at a fast pace.

@Woelf: Do you know if cancellers were costed at 5 points partially to allow players to bring them in with 0LR+5 crew to counter things like Submarines/etc?  (or if 0LR+5’s were introduced to allow the kind of “canceller flexibility” that would be helpful in later expansions when things like Submarine/Eternal/etc were introduced – not sure how the plans for sets were developed in regards to future idea implementation)

Can a home island raider dock at an enemy home island if there aren’t any coins there?

Pretty sure I’ve asked this but not seeing it via the forum search: If you start your turn on a sargasso sea but you didn’t get stuck last turn, do you have to roll since you’re sailing over it?  Or would you only roll if you contact a NEW sargasso sea during that action?

Its been a while since I have last had the opportunity to engage with Pirates csg. Im glad to be see that there is an active community even after Pirates has long been out of print.

Ahoy matey, welcome aboard!  I love the strategy complexities as well, to the point where I made a post about it last year.

@Woelf: Do you know if there is a reason that Wizkids often used the term “boarding action” instead of “boarding party”?

Seems to me that using “boarding party” would avoid potential confusion for players thinking that boarding is (maybe only for certain abilities) a full action.

I present the Sea Beast keyword.

I like this a lot.  My hunch is that playtesting would go well.

Can you reveal a face down UT such as Runes of Odin to play it from your home island after unloading it there, or do face down UT’s have to be on ships in order to be revealed and used?

In multiplayer games, is gold on sunken ships revealed when it’s removed from the game?  Or do you have to rely on asking the player whose ship sunk what they had on it?  (this could be very important to know if something like Runes of Loki is still in play vs. gone for good)

I assume you can stack the uncommon versions of equipment like exploding shot with the LE variants because they have slightly different effects/drawbacks? (just confirming since a “trigger” could be different than a drawback)

Can a submarine ram another submarine while both are submerged? I couldn’t find anything conclusive in the Code.

Nope.  It’s in the Submarine keyword: “If submerged, a submarine can only move; it cannot shoot or be shot at, it cannot repair, it cannot dock, and it cannot be rammed.”

It’s been a minute since I’ve been on here XD, I just sat down to do a spreadsheet of my collection (so far just named crew, ships and unique treasure) and I’m up near 800 unique game pieces. I think I might post some photos soon to since I had the bug and some extra cash and grabbed a couple fresh packs and sealed boxes.

Awesome, looking forward to seeing it!  I moved your reply here since this is the best thread for it.
