Do any of you guys use events at all or do people just generally avoid them?

I hate them and vastly prefer playing games where they are banned (which happens in most of the games I’ve played nowadays).  The last time I used them consistently was just for the competitive fleets in VASSAL Tournament #2, but even then Xerecs and I banned mermaids and FotG.

  • What other questionable ones are out there that need it, besides the Runes and the Cross?

    Not sure off hand.

-If a UT is loaded facedown and can be revealed voluntarily later, including as a response to an opponent’s actions or effects (such as a die roll), it can be used once per round.

This clears things up!  Thanks.  Now to find more exploits…. 😉

  • Has playing the fleets started yet?

  • +1 to CrazyIvan as a great trader!

  • On Nemo’s Plans with Runes of Thor:

Similar applies to these.   You could use it against a ram roll, then a boarding roll, and then a single shoot action roll, but you can’t use it on every single die rolled during a single shoot action.

The discussion from 2020 gave me the impression that this couldn’t be done.  Is there something I’m missing?

  • I’m assuming you’re probably wanting them for collection purposes so this might not be what you’re looking for, but I thought I’d put a post in case you were just wanting them for actual play.

I would be fine having them punched.  🙂

    February 12th, 2022
Ahoy there!  I met up with JW Darkhurst and Gazerbeam543 at Gazerbeam’s house in LA for the final two games of my time in SoCal!

  • @CrazyIvan: Welcome aboard matey!

I think I first played the game some time around 2010 or 2011 when my older brother came across a box of the Pirates of the Caribbean set that was on clearance sale from a stationary store. He bought a couple of packs before we then decided to go back and grab as many as we could. In the end we managed to get our…

  • Whoops! I fixed it; that’s what happens when I don’t write the battle report very soon after the game. Glad you mentioned the canoe repairing since I kind of forgot about that too. Certainly an awesome use of the unique ability!

A Pair of Games: 4 Players, 60 Points in LA!
    January 29th, 2022
I met up with Gazerbeam543, JW Darkhurst, and Xerecs at Gazerbeam’s house in Los Angeles!  We played a game utilizing the points in play endgame co […]

    • Small correction, game one I didn’t have the Slipstream (I wish I did :D), I had the Devil Ray, I just forgot to bring the deckplate with me.

The co-op game was real fun, especially when I pulled off the Native Canoe repairing and healed both the Barnacle and Intermediaro. I’d love to give co-op another go, either with 3 teams of 2, or 2 teams of 3. 0.0

        • I feel you, happens to me almost every year during the summer game. “What ship is that over there again? Looks like this one. Could also be this one.” Turns out to be neither of those ships. 😀

It certainly is a unique ability, and one that could make Sea Monster fleets more “viable”, especially if more than one set of canoes are involved, English or otherwise.

  • Can a Hoist’s free explore action happen in between its own move segments?  (ex: move S, hoist free explore, move S)

Los Angeles California Gaming – 6 Players, 60 Points!
    January 22nd, 2022
Following our 100 point escapade, we somewhat miraculously all had time to play another game!  This time the build total was 60 points. […]

  • I’ve made various errors over the past few months while playing and it has certainly cost me as well. Indeed, I think at some point we’ll have 5+ players in a game in LA again sometime.

  • Interesting perspective. While I agree that Captain Jack Sparrow is game-breaking, I don’t think the whole set should be considered a “joke” as a result. Thanks for commenting!

6 Players, 100 Points in Los Angeles!
    January 22nd, 2022
After lots of messaging with friends and fellow players on the Discord server, I was able to coordinate a meetup with a whopping 6 different players! […]

    • I made a fleet building error and forgot to include Calico Cat on La Victoire. I don’t think it would have mattered too much though. My attempt to win with gold-capture failed spectacularly. 😀

I did however manage to pull off a gold-capture win the next weekend I think, capturing a Zeus’s worth of crew to seal the deal.

Rambling aside, this was an awesome experience, and I’d love to do it again!

  • Oops sorry, just switched him out for BC Freda to preserve SAT and added a stinkpot shot since I had to remove Vega.

  • Yikes, that is a ridiculous point differential. I’ll throw my pirate hat into the ring.

  • Something that stayed face-up on an island once revealed.

Not enough to tell if it would be OP or not.  That could be anything from “bring a ship into the game at this island when you roll a 6” to “ships docked here get +1 to their boarding rolls”.
