I’d like to bring the crappy ones up to speed rather than nerfing the good ones though.
I can agree on that. OE Acorazado is a bad 5 master and terrible compared to the original, but there are far worse ships.
I want to know what the hell they were thinking with ships like Hannah, Majestic, and La Colibri. (The “ships within S get +1 to their…

I’ve thought subs and sea creatures could both be faster on average. Though I’d much rather increase a few base moves than have Mercenary helmsmen give +L. I think that would open a can of worms with power gaming – San Cristobal with SS Tsai could go S+S+L+L, as fast as the Hai Peng. Not to mention 10 masters flying all over the board at co…[Read more]

Could you explain a bit more about the points system? I like that dismasting ships could be a viable winning strategy, but how do we balance it?
I think I first got the idea from here, then expanded. I played a game (BR not republished yet) where we tested it out – one of my all-time favorite conceptual house rules.
Adding the main concept to t…[Read more]

How would we place an equal amount of emphasis on combat and capturing?
I like using points in play count towards the victory condition of most gold/points.
I think it can be as simple as “if you destroy the other person’s entire fleet, you win regardless of players’ gold count.”
It makes a lot of sense, and some players I’ve played with in the p…[Read more]

I like the idea of resources! It would place more importance on treasure runners and gathering, setting up supply lines and defending territory, all that good stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I love combat, but resource management would give the game a lot of replayability and strategy (on top of what it already has!)
I agree, but a lot of people have c…[Read more]

I myself love to add a touch of mundane,my shipyard games are played with a circle of our extra ships surrounding play with a shopkeep token placed in between 2 ships the two ships on either side of it are for sale when 1 ship is purchased its moved onto the board and now another ship would be up for sale.
Interesting, that reminds me of my harbor…[Read more]

I know this isn’t technically Pirates CSG, but I can’t help but share 3D printing/etc news occasionally because of how it could relate to bringing back the game in some form in the future. Interesting to think about the possibilities if the production costs weren’t such a big hurdle to…[Read more]

What do you consider the biggest missing thematic element in Pirates CSG?
For me it’s wind. Other concepts I can think of would be return fire (or at least some form of simultaneous combat), storms or bad weather in general (squalls, hurricanes, etc), boarding where you can capture an enemy ship without making them derelict first, and some kind…[Read more]

@Mechavelli: I like the English fleet! Though I hate the Treachery due to her flavor text (English are my favorite faction). Hopefully you can sub her out for the Cumberland or Antelope sometime. 🙂
I once won a game with Marques Miguel Antonio and False Treasure taking up half the point cost.
That deserves a battle report. XD

One, does this happen even if the sub rams while surfaced?
No.
And two, does the immediate S move action interrupt a captain action?
Therefore, no. The sub can’t shoot while submerged, and has no S segment to move while ramming on the surface. The S segment is not a move action. The Nautilus would actually shoot at the Bon Marin before ap…[Read more]

Mercenaries are entirely battle focused, and thematically they are defending their little utopia from invaders, so this would help with both of those things while tying into their stateless rebels lore.
That’s one thing that I’ve wondered about with the Mercs. It seems like they’d go to the highest bidder and not really care about their…[Read more]

I would like to know how other people play.
I like to change things up. I’ve played well over 400 games, with build totals from 10 points to 500. My favorite of course are huge games. I recommend you check out Game Ideas.
Perhaps campaign is a bad adjective but that is what we usual describe it as.
From the sounds of it that makes sense…[Read more]

as a free action if your ship is 2L away from every isle
Interesting idea, but this seems very unlikely to happen in a game, especially when using the standard 3L distance. (which I don’t recommend)

One alternate rule that I’ve used that slows the game down well and makes terrain in general more useful is that you only begin with home islands, and you can use a ship’s action for the turn to “discover” an island, by placing an island at least L-away from that ship, and 3-L away from any other island. Then the player to your left places a piece…

Now that the Rules survey has some results (37 responses as of this post), I think it would be a good idea to discuss some various options in detail.
Feel free to list what house rules you have used in the past.
Fog Banks:
Ships lost in the same fog bank can fire on each other with successes on 6+. Pinned ships can shoot as normal, however,…

I’m going to start a few posts here regarding some of the weaker factions so we can figure out house rules to make them better.
But do they need to be better? I like how all the factions are unique to some extent. Boosting them can sometimes make them less interesting in my opinion.
Our topic for this thread is Mercs: how do we make them pla…
