XerecsModeratorYeah exactly, ive already made a seamonster with some thin cardstock but I would love to hear or see other methods(cost is a big factor since I don’t wanna buy more ships unless their like 50cents)
I’ve experimented with cardboard and very thin balsa wood. I’ve managed to put together a regular 4 mast with each material, but using duplicate ships is the best way to go I’m afraid. The cardboard and wood will hold together, but its not as structurally sound as the plastic.
I’d show pictures, but I’m not sure how to post pictures here yet.
p.s. you replied tge moment I found your profile to message you.
Heh, fancy that. 😀
XerecsModeratorIve also been wondering what everyone uses for their custom ships
Are you referring to what we use to make physical copies of the ships and crew we create, or something else?
Also, welcome aboard!
XerecsModeratorI was busy yesterday and didn’t really look at the Duchesse, but looking now I really like that ship. Ability aside, he base speed and good cannons already make he a ‘speedy’ gunship, and as has been said time and again, speed mattes.
What I find most interesting is the link. Any and all named captains can link to this ship. That’s quite a lot of interesting combinations. The several S-Board captains, Arazure and Arathiel the SAC captains, Lady roimata with captain+SAT; and then there’s the Custom French captains. I know I’ve given them at least one EA Captain, Cazador gave them a captain+explore combo, and the list goes on.
As for the main ability itself, and concerns over point cost, I suggest a middle ground for now of 19 points. If you feel that’s still too low then 20 or 20+ it is.
XerecsModeratorI really like this combo of the CB and Spetner. He’ll link to the ship, and therefore not take up cargo space, leaving the Bay with 5 open spots, 4 after adding a helmsman. If you decide to include an explorer, her hold is reduced somewhat, but still effective as a hybrid like ship.
XerecsModeratorSkyme and Hawkins are linked too, so they work well together, though they’re pricey.
Due to how the linking rules wok, the Spanish main version of Skyme will only link to the Spanish main version of Jack Hawkins, since his link text specifies ‘Captain Jack Hawkins’ and thee are no other ‘Captain Jack Hawkins’, just Jack Hawkins.
However, you may link both versions of Skyme the Monkey to the Spanish Main version of Jack, since his link text specifies ‘Skyme the Monkey’ and the two versions of Skyme are spelled the same way, therefore both versions may link to ‘Captain Jack Hawkins’.
XerecsModeratorI really like the Talindurum, cool pairing of abilities.
Raidamos is good as well, I love seeing the Eternal ability. 😀 I’m not positive, but I think he’s made an appearance in SS.
Batreans is interesting. There isn’t a bombardier like he, even among customs. I’d love to see her used in a game, big or small.
XerecsModeratorInteresting ship, turning what the Cursed have been historically decent at (boarding) into a potential drawback. Given that boarding ability, I’d try to not board as often as possible with the PC, which could be difficult, given that the Cursed have a limited amount of true capital ships at their disposal. In a campaign, I imagine this would be pat of a larger battle group, with support ships all around.
In a smaller game, I think she’d do well as a lightly armed flagship for a more guns oriented fleet.
Something I just thought of to bypass the boarding ability, a Doctor crew. The Pirates must have at least one, and the Cursed might have one given all the custom stuff we’ve made for them. Hmmm…. If that would work then this ship gets much more interesting, especially if you can bring along a recruiter crew along, then you’d WANT to board so you could use the ability chain to flip the recruiter back over with the doctor.
XerecsModeratorI like the Topaz, seems like an interesting hybrid option for the Mercs. He speed and ability would help he hunt down the smaller one and two mast gold runners, and the mercs have plenty of fun crew to use in boarding situations.
XerecsModeratorConsidering how bereft the Vikings are for extra actions, I don’t think this Paladin is OP. He seems like a leader crew, perfect for campaigns.
XerecsModeratorYikes, I would not want to be boarded by that thing. The fist five cannons are decent, if S range, and after that they’re not so good, essentially making this a 5 mast ship with a +5 boarding built in. I think the low cargo (for a ten) will help keep this from getting overly unfair, as will the extraordinary high cost.
It has been since February 23rd.
The game email went to my Junk folder……. UGH.
XerecsModeratorLooking forward to seeing it!
XerecsModeratorHmmm, that would confuse me in a game.
PS: Let’s play CG4!
But it’s not currently my turn…….?
XerecsModeratorWow, some interesting combos for sure. I’m tying to imagine what a five mast ‘galley’ would look like. I’m assuming its basically a 5 with slots for oars, and retains all the other abilities of a galley, such as inability to be pinned, and the stern turn. Hmmm. If anyone wanted to try and construct it, they could even try to have the masts set at an angle, or use galley masts set at a regular angle for a five.
By the look of it, you could probably fill out a full forty point fleet with just these pieces alone, giving you an interesting gunship, and some very fast canoes to grab some golden goodies, even if you could try and optimize them for combat.
I see that Cain and the Canoes have different point costs, which confuses me a little. The chieftain crew is supposed to assume the full cost of the canoes, so shouldn’t the canoes also be 14 points, or should Cain be 11?
XerecsModeratorI like this Queen’s Ghost, combining Ghost ship with a high base move is always fun to see. I also like her home island aiding ability, though I’m upset she doesn’t have more cargo. I suppose giving her more would make her more expensive though, and she’s already fairly expensive for a two mast ship.
XerecsModeratorI’m still not sue how I feel about dual nationality crew, at least when they’re part mercenary. I don’t see it as pat of his abilities, so I’m assuming he doesn’t have Ex-Pat?
XerecsModeratorShine seems like an interesting little runner, decent base move and Turtle Ship will protect he from a couple cannons before she loses masts. Do you house rule that Turtle ships can’t have their masts rammed off while they still have panels?
XerecsModeratorWhoa, talk about an epic ship indeed! There’s quite a lot I like about this ship, namely her speed. Set up right, she’d make a perfect ‘striker’ gunship, more than capable of getting the first hit in on any ship. I also like Dories, I think it should be on more ships, and not just mercenary ships. The bow and stern chaser cannons are quite interesting, especially if Power Cannons found their way onto her. Since the chain shot is not limited to S, you could use those bow and stern cannons to shoot a chain shot at L+L range!
Van Damme is cool, and makes for an interesting combo on his own ship, since he won’t take up cargo space, and add one because of his link, giving the ME a total of 5 cargo to stash stolen goodies in.
XerecsModeratorOooh. I like the Crystal Shroud. It sounds cool, and has an interesting function, I’d probably use it on a heavyweight named crew, or what I’d consider the most important named crew on a gunship. Might be difficult in that respect, since big gunships usually get built to the point limit.
XerecsModeratorVery interesting. Fog hopping on such a large ship is indeed powerful and should not be cheap. however, given the rest of the ships stats, I feel you could come down to 40 points. If only because Storms don’t get used often, even by me! Therefore, to my way of thinking, it would be difficult to get that +1 to d6 rolls ability to kick in, and the same on Alcantara. Speaking of, I think he’s fine at 10, given how difficult it might be to get that +S when within S of a storm.
XerecsModeratorNot much cargo on the Perseguidor to take advantage of the Hoard ability. She’s nice and fast though, reminds me of the Amity from CC. He cannons are a little wonky, though I do like the ‘bow chaser’ 2L.
Would Luis be able to use his chain shot from that bow cannon, or would he still need to have a target within S? I like his flavor text, sounds like a dedicated (and possibly overzealous) soul.
P.S. Huzzah, I see a page function!
XerecsModeratorI usually don’t comment on the Historical customs (since I’m usually not well read on them), but Nagle looks awesome! I agree he could be very powerful in a game, and combining him with Commander Temple could get messy in games with a point limit (basically anything not a campaign). I think the way you’ve worded the ability is fine, and 5 gold I think is fine, I mean Barbary Banner is essentially a 5 coin to any non-corsairs.
Those mercs are very interesting. I like the Starfire, I experimented with that on a few pieces from SpMg. Her base move and cargo are nothing special, but that’s good, since her main ability is devestating, not even a high point cost could keep it from being OP or broken. This is one ship you’d HAVE to get the first shot on, or have a canceller handy.
Harrion is cool, I like the combination of Captain and re-roll, and the grapple shot makes him quite intriguing. With that you could put him on a sniping ship and go nuts, or combine him with WK Nemo for even more fun.
Stormguard sounds like it came out of a fantasy novel, I love that name! Anywho, nice little fort. A decent defensive ability for a fort, and allowing Harrion to use his abilities IN the fort is interesting and cool.
XerecsModeratorInteresting remake. I assume the Bombardier cannon is 3S, since I don’t see it listed with the other cannons? I think this is a much improved version of the Draconum, almost too good. Her cargo I think holds her back from being exceptional, which I think is good, otherwise no one would use the original. 😀
I also like her linked crew. I assume then, that you’d be unable to use him with the other versions of Mission/Myssion? Flavor implications aside, I like the combination of WH and fleet admiral, as it allows for a fleet admiral to be on the front lines of a battle, as long as you take steps to prevent his demise….
XerecsModeratorI hate to say it, but keep in mind that you got banned for a reason. You may disagree with the reasoning to some extent, but the admin has their own rules.
Exactly. I may not even bother reactivating or making a new account, since PwB and other places have picked up. I’ll reach out, but I’ll probably just lurk on MT from now on.
XerecsModeratorI would just go through with the contact us option and try to get the old account back.
I’ll probably do that, but like I said, I’m hesitant. I’m not sure how they (we?) would be able to clean things up. It’d be great to have the old account back, but starting over might be less of a hassle.
XerecsModeratorInteresting combo there. I’ve wondered what HG would look like on a ten, and here it is! 😀 The bounty only has 7 total cargo (5+2 from HG) and a base move of L, so she’d be a slow hybrid type of thing. Then again, at 30 points, the Mercs have some crazy stuff in their ranks, so it could quickly become some kind of dreadnought.
Given his last name, is Cartavius related to Jack Hawkins in some way? I think I’d like to see a version of that ability that is not limited to functioning only on its linked ship. If that stipulation is removed, I’d think a crew with those abilities would be around 6-7 points, depending on how you want to value abilities.
XerecsModeratorI’ve been watching lots of Sea of Thieves vids lately. I’m sorely wishing I could play that. Alas, my poor laptop would not be able to support it, and getting a PC that does will be EXPENSIVE.
XerecsModeratorI’ve taken recently to listening to Adrian von Zeigler, I used two of his compositions in the island making video. Other than him I’ve discovered Antti Martikainen. I quite enjoy the Hymn of the High Seas, along with his other pirate themed music.
Other things I listen to (during games and not) include the Glitch Mob, Irish music in general, some selections by Clamavi de Profundis, mostly their covers of Tolkien poems/songs. Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean also make appearances, though those depend on my mood.
XerecsModeratorI think we probably said that because of the Limit inclusion. Generally keywords should not be within other keywords. It’s confusing, easy to forget, and leads to looking up chains of abilities just to see what “one” ability does.
I should have mentioned this when I posted the Tesoro – I am using a custom version of your Hidden Gold ability without the Limit keyword. I’m sorry if that’s against your intent with the keyword, but I think it remains a fair ability (not super OP even at a relatively low cost of perhaps 3) and becomes both less confusing and easier to use than it is with Limit attached. Similar to what Woelf has said, I maintain my stance that adding Limit to things is not a good way to reduce their cost or make them less OP. I really like the keyword so I hope you don’t have a problem with me using a modified version of it.
Before you used it, it only appeared on ONE ship, which had a cannon bonus and was Eternal if a captain was present on the ship. I think I included Limit as pat of it because of some discussion in the original custom ships thread, between me, you, and Cazador; and at the time I think I thought that it was a powerful ability. As I mentioned above, I’ll probably re-instate the keyword, and eliminate the Limit part (as you suggested/have already done). I don’t think that will affect the Point Cost of the Carnage much, but I’ll post her for some discussion.
Carnage
Points: 20
Masts: 4
Cagro: 4
Cannons: 3S-2L-2L-3S
Movement: S+S
Ability: Hidden Gold (without Limit ver). If this ship has a captain crew, she gets +1 to her cannon and boarding rolls, and is considered Eternal.
Link: One-Handed John.Like I said, I don’t think removing Limit would affect her cost but I’d like opinions.
Anywho, back to the Keyword. I’m fine with leaving Limit out of it, and go ahead and use it (or any of my other Custom Keywords for that matter) as much or as little as you’d like.
XerecsModeratorNice ship, I quite like the Clouds of Strelbair. Also nice to see Hidden Gold on another ship. I think that I kind of dropped the keyword actually, since it’s only been on one of my Customs, and after reviewing it I think you and GM recommended that it become a written out ability.
Anywho, Hidden Gold is fun, but it has LIMIT built into it. I might change that so that only the Carnage has LIMIT, but its important to remember when making a fleet, or using in a campaign.
Full keyword breakdown would look like:
Hidden Gold: This ship has 2 extra cargo spaces that may only be taken by TREASURE. This ship is considered to have the Limit keyword.
XerecsModerator@JW, I think if you want to distinguish Andes, then I think you could give him a third ability in addition to captain and EA. But nothing too good, if you catch my meaning. Captain, EA, and doctor or something along the like. Not crew protection, as that’d be too good, but a third ability could distinguish him somewhat.
