Pretty cool to see my Black Pearl picture in the Top 10 (#9 of 55) of the 2022 BGG yearly photo contest!  Thanks to all who voted!

Because they can only shoot something that’s surrounded, the target will always be within range of every tentacle, and removing specific ones won’t alter its lines of fire any any meaningful way.

Interesting.  I was thinking more if the kraken got cancelled, and could therefore shoot at ships it wasn’t surrounding.

Especially for those that remember the “supercollector” Dholub1 from Miniature Trading, feel free to send me any questions you’d like me to ask him. I hope to meet him in Tampa this weekend and we might do a podcast. ?

How much does the order of kraken tentacles matter when constructing them?  Should it be clockwise from the bottom left corner, or having the middle cannons on the deckplate be the innermost tentacles?

After seeing the 100 point Dragon Fleet, and some minor discussion on Discord, I went and created this fleet.

Nice fleet!! I like the inclusion of so many canoes, and the idea of using the “any canoes” part of the English canoe ability text.  I think one of the main issues will be that you must place all 20 canoes at the same wild island.  If someone has a multi-action 10 master nearby (more than likely at this build total), the first round could get really ugly.  Sure the dragons could retaliate, but losing the American and Spanish canoes could be crippling.  I think it would make the turn order and home island/terrain placement selections extremely important.

This ship sinks when her last mast is eliminated.

If that ability is cancelled, does the ship sink when the cancelling “resets”, or does it stay afloat as a derelict because at that point, the last mast has already been eliminated (and having it not be cancelled is not triggering the final mast to be eliminated again).

Did you ever find any stats on the actual size of that table?   Judging from how it looks in comparison to the ships, it’s way too small to play a regulation game on it even after adding a few more islands.   You’d need three more to make a 2×2 square just to get a large enough area.

Nope.  I agree though, it might not work with the 3L minimum distance.

@CrazyIvan: Great post and reflections!  I didn’t teach new players or play non-solo 4 player games until years after I learned a ton about the game, so I can imagine that being a big deal.  Love the lessons learned from playing too.

With the Born Leader keyword, are you supposed to take an action before rolling for the ability to get SAT?  This line from the Code seems to imply that: “-The die roll for this ability is made immediately before giving the action you wish to repeat.”  However, the ability text indicates otherwise.

When an American native canoe is exploring, can you use the ability of another canoe within S to take a treasure from the first canoe (while it’s still exploring), thus allowing the first canoe to load additional treasure(s)?  (“Once per turn as a free action, you can transfer one treasure from a friendly ship within S of this ship to this ship.”)

Sleigh/Whitebeard questions: Can the “Ho Ho Ho” ability be used on every player’s turn? (or just Santa’s turn; I realize it is probably every player’s turn due to your answer on the spying abilities from October, but it just felt too ridiculous to play it that way with this one)
Is the Sleigh’s ability to not be shot at and cannot sink one ability since it’s one sentence? (or separate for copying/cancelling purposes)

Can an L mover move a ship out of a fog bank?

Can Runes of Odin be revealed on any player’s turn? (or just the owner’s turn)

Are flotillas automatically “docked” at an island when the towing ship docks? (thinking no because flotillas don’t have bows)

Do you get 1 gold from Ransom if you eliminate your own crew after it was captured by an opponent?

Am I correct in saying that neither of these situations trigger a player to be eliminated for the “half or more” multiplayer endgame rule: derelict with Eternal (can be scuttled), and a ship with Oarsman that is pinned in place by a sea monster.

I may have been moving sea monsters wrong for years.  Must you always move them so the white dot is the forwardmost point?  I have usually played that they face “forward” with the tentacles of a squid outstretched which helps them be able to pin opponents more quickly.  Is this wrong?  I’ve noticed that by reversing direction on the dot and turning 180 degrees, it can produce quite a large “flip” as the tentacles reverse direction and cause a big movement jump from one extreme end to the opposite direction.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2022 Holiday Booty Giveaway Contest!  I have read/watched all the submitted Battle Reports and here are the results in regards to the extra prizes. There were only 6-7 total entrants so everyone will get the standard goodies!

    Entrants

    1. Skelebone 1, Skelebone 2, Skelebone 11/29, Skelebone 12/2 (twice as many games played as anyone else and some at relatively high build totals, plus very descriptive and easy to understand reports with great postgame summaries with lessons learned/etc.)
    2. CrazyIvan 1, CrazyIvan 2 (excellent videos and BR production effort!)
    3. Captain Vendari 1, Captain Vendari 2 (great pictures and summary)
    4. Highlander 1, Highlander 2 (nice high quality pictures!)
    5. Slappin300s/T26E4 (minimal reporting but impressive game scale)
    6. Ochobrazo2298 (scattered throughout channel) – no top 5 prize due to game not starting or ending in time window, which I should have clarified beforehand as not being much of an issue. Would have been 2nd or 3rd if finished by the end of 12/4, but will receive some kind of extra prize due to size/epicness of game and effort involved with custom stuff included.

There were also some awesome pictures posted by a member of the FB group within the contest time window; I’ve asked if they would like a prize as well even if not originally intending to submit specifically for the contest.

Great job to all and I hope you keep enjoying this game as much as I saw in the BR’s!  Let me know if you are able to make good use of the prizes once you have them and we can all continue the pirate traditions of enjoying this game and sharing it!

Just added these to the main post:

-Maelstrom battle from At World’s End. Ex: big whirlpools that ships can get stuck in as they go around it in a circle on bad rolls. +Big whirlpool “black hole” that sucks all game pieces toward it on a roll of 1 each round? Or, have a circular ocean that is one big whirlpool. There are different “lanes” in which concentric circles determine where the ships are each round. At the end of each round of turns they move one section closer to the center of the whirlpool, effectively meaning the game has a timer. Might be best in a 1v1 deathmatch. The goal is to sink the other ship before yours gets sucked in, or simply outrun the whirlpool somehow (maybe tossing cargo gets you one lane towards the outside of the whirlpool). Lots of different ways to do it, and you could make alternate versions that would work in a regular game with gold, or a 1v1 deathmatch that simulates the movie scene as much as possible.

-Expanding upon the Race scenario linked above: line (“drag race”) vs. circle/oval (or other!), have islands with UT’s on them (power-ups/upgrades/etc), shortcut opportunities, NPC creatures.

Something I’ve barely thought of before: utilizing the ships you capture to build new nationalities of forts during a game.  Ex: Start with a pure American fleet, but once you capture a French ship, build Paradis.

    60 Point American fleet
USS Constitution + captain, helmsman, tribal chieftain
Destiny + Wayne Nolan, Brent Rice, captain, chain shot
    Hessian + helmsman, shipwright, oarsman
    American Native Canoes
UT’s: Weapons, Enemy of the State, Power Cannons, Marines
Islands: not too far apart due to max speed of L+S, but want some room to flex Destiny’s max cannon ranges.
Terrain: Likely reefs and a fog bank – all gold runners are immune to reefs here.

Fun American fleet I used in a game.  You could swap Nolan for Commodore Perry on Constitution, then use the 5 points to add Rattlesnake/etc.

UT selection was based on the abilities present. Marines are ignored by the canoes and Hessian can repair if she finds them. Weapons helps all three ships with crew quite a bunch. Enemy of the State is easily carried by a “sacrificial” canoe or yanked off Hessian by a canoe that doesn’t need to dock at home. Power Cannons is meant to get Destiny to 4L range cannons, but can be utilized effectively by the Constitution as well.

If the flotilla keyword is cancelled, can it still shoot through itself?

Asking for a friend: do derelicts block lines of fire?

On dismasted ships with Oarsman: are there undesirable outcomes that are avoided by not letting these ships ram other ships?  This has come up frequently this year, where a player feels they should be able to ram and board with a ship that has an oarsman.

    70 Point Durable Endeavour build
HMS Endeavour + RotF HGold, Brother Virgil, DJC Davy Jones, 2 points left for Ralph David + oarsman, or RotF TvTyne (up to 12 masts/turn), or Oarsman + Letter of Marque/Lucky the Parrot/etc.
HMS Lord Kenyon + Robinson, Thomas Gunn (F&S), Lord Mycron, navigator
    +Oarsman on HI

Idea is to copy Lord Kenyon’s ability to Endeavour to make the beast a more offensively charged version of El Acorazado. Swap out the Eternal crew for others if playing deathmatch with HI’s and/or Eternal banned. Lord Kenyon acts as one of the best cheerleaders ever, giving Endeavour the ability to hit on 2’s, two actions per turn every turn, and sometimes a +S boost to increase chances at initiating combat.

If Endeavour is lost, LK can drop the navigator for the oarsman and be a somewhat annoying final customer for the opponent with *essentially* 2S guns and 4 hits to dismast.

With cheese this is adaptable to a non-deathmatch 70 point game too. Just swap navigator on LK and HI oarsman for 0LR+5 Bratley, then for the 8 points left add in whatever you want for gold runners (Banshee’s Cry + explorer, Rover, Mermaid, etc).

For Mysterious Island #7, can the new coin be a UT or a 0 coin?

5-6: After exploring this island, place a treasure coin from your collection with value equal to or less than one you took on the island.

Do you skip an eliminated player’s turn with Altar of the Loa if all they have left in play is a fort?

No.   That player will count toward the endgame condition because they can’t give move actions, but assuming there are enough other players still going to prevent that, the player with the fort still gets their turn in the normal sequence.   If there’s nothing within range of the fort to attack they won’t have anything to do, but that’s not enough to skip them entirely.

Can it skip that player if they didn’t have a fort? (absolutely no units in play)

The Sleigh (proxied by HMS Gallows) went first, as per the Challenge, and moved 6L to the far side of the map, near some thematic Icebergs. My fleet went next, with Jones pinning the Sleigh in place with Whitebeards ability, while the Cygnet and Bazana got underway.

When Sleigh goes first I think Whitebeard would “hohoho” the Locker into missing her turn (unless the controller guessed wrong which ship to lock up), in which case I think DJ wouldn’t be able to copy Whitebeard and freeze the Sleigh.

If so, the L-immunity becomes very helpful because you might just be able to run gold and get it all.  Because if Sleigh rams one of your ships, it can’t dismast it (max of 1 damage) and then you just keep it pinned while running gold with the remaining ship.

A strange challenge; the more I think about it the less I want to attempt it.  The gamification is on such a level that it might just come down to who goes first, or how the Sleigh and Whitebeard’s unique abilities work in relation to others and the Code.  I like how a regular game has a lot more variables where many things can dictate the outcome.  XD
