That makes sense. At some point I’ll playtest the rules I laid out and see if any modifications are optimal. I think it would depend on how dangerous the players want the environment to be. Thanks for commenting!

Because they can only shoot something that’s surrounded, the target will always be within range of every tentacle, and removing specific ones won’t alter its lines of fire any any meaningful way.
Interesting. I was thinking more if the kraken got cancelled, and could therefore shoot at ships it wasn’t surrounding.

How much does the order of kraken tentacles matter when constructing them? Should it be clockwise from the bottom left corner, or having the middle cannons on the deckplate be the innermost tentacles?

It doesn’t sound like there’s a lot of incentive to cutting through to the lower rings, aside from trying to shortcut your way to an island or to shoot at someone else that’s already in there on the other side. Having a constant “pull” toward the center could help with that, like making each ship roll a 6 every turn, and on a roll of 1 or 2 it immediately moves that many rings inward. It’s probably easier to have that roll at the start of a turn, so the ships can still use their action to attempt to get back out, but you could keep it at the end (or after each action) to increase the risk/danger. Ships that didn’t (or couldn’t) take actions could get pulled in even faster, like 1-3, or just make it an automatic 1 without any roll.

This ship sinks when her last mast is eliminated.
If that ability is cancelled, does the ship sink when the cancelling “resets”, or does it stay afloat as a derelict because at that point, the last mast has already been eliminated (and having it not be cancelled is not triggering the final mast to be eliminated again).

Did you ever find any stats on the actual size of that table? Judging from how it looks in comparison to the ships, it’s way too small to play a regulation game on it even after adding a few more islands. You’d need three more to make a 2×2 square just to get a large enough area.
Nope. I agree though, it might not work with the 3L minimum distance.

@CrazyIvan: Great post and reflections! I didn’t teach new players or play non-solo 4 player games until years after I learned a ton about the game, so I can imagine that being a big deal. Love the lessons learned from playing too.
