I would love to buy another booster box! There’s something so cathartic about cracking 36 packs! I am also considering buying a plunder pack- I currently have no 10 masters,

I think playing otherwise standard games using Ben’s recosted list would also allow some less loved ships to see play time. I’m considering using it to get more use out of my cursed ships.

Update: I slaughtered them all! I managed to pull the roanoke, as well as several great rares. The highlight of the packs included acquiring SIX New five masters! Along with 4 new forts ( I previously only had one) As I previously owned no crimson coast, here is the data for rate of duplicates to unique ships -45 out of 72 or 62 percent were unique! A pretty decent rate. Out of the 36 packs there was one error- 2 San fernando 2/2s were included in the same pack. Overall, I am quite happy with my purchase- having spent about 100$ on the pack + shipping I except to be able to recoup some of my cost through selling the commons in bulk, and rares as singles. If anyone is interested in some of my duplicates let me know! I would love to hear some of your box opening stories- this is the first time I’ve bought a full box and it was tons of fun!

Ben, I remember always being so excited to pick up one of these packs at the store as a kid. I loved oceans edge because of the crazy things you could pull from it. I also remember my frustration as a kid from breaking my El Toro during assembly! That killed me because the giant ? was probably my favorite thing I could have pulled. At present it is extremely rare that a ship gets broken, but as a child it happened frequently! I am still hoping to pull a titan to this day, I know I could just order one but the feeling of pulling one is so much more satisfying.

I think I have more fun opening the packs than playing the game. It’s so much fun to open a pack not knowing what’s inside. I know OE is sub par gameplay wise but the sheer variety of types of ships makes it fun to open. I get so excited whenever I pull a sea monster or some other weird thing!

I recently bought 40 or so packs, and managed to pull a dutchman, the endeavour, HMS grand temple, La Soleil, and Lord Algernon. Among other neat pulls

This is entirely anecdotal, but after posting a picture of my pirates collection to my Snapchat story, I received atleast 3-4 messages expresssing nostalgia for the game.

keep in mind I only have 30~ or so friends and none of the people who messaged me play any sort of tabletop games at present.

I don’t think the community is big enough. We need to bring in more people. Even if NECA gave you the license for free, the amount of money required to produce a reasonable number of packs would probably be pretty high.

There is however, a lot of people who have nostalgia for this game, and there is not a CSG on the market currently. I feel like the fact that there is no other CSG on the market is the key to bringing this or a similar game back.

Metal is a good material for constructing models at a fairly economic price, but I worth painting the metal would be next to impossible to do well.

You might be able to do metal. See products like metal earth. In my experience though that stuff is so flimsy and finicky it’s not worth fooling with. Laser cut wood is a good option but that is probably prohibitively expensive and might require glue.

A more realistic route for a reboot might be to ditch the buildable aspect entirely, and just have the ships molded in plastic and sold as “blind boxes”. There are a lot of popular collectible toys that use this route, some of them with games involved. Plastic toys are fairly durable and can be produced inexpensively, damage markers could be used instead of removable masts. I personally wouldn’t like this option for aesthetic reasons but I feel like this might be a way the game could be revived.

    Game ideas

<li style=”text-align: center;”>a standard 40 point game, but ships are damaged permanently and realistically (shot by actual cannons when they are hit in game)
<li style=”text-align: center;”>a standard 40 point game, but both players must be blindfolded
<li style=”text-align: center;”>a standard 40 point game, but all ships used MUST be the Batavian Bat.
      <li style=”text-align: center;”>a standard 40 point game,
<li style=”text-align: center;”>a standard 40 point game, but take a shot any time any action is taken, anytime a ship loses a mast, anytime an ability is used, and take a shot for each point of gold value you obtain at your home island.

    1. a standard 40 point game, but the rules are combined with the NASCAR race day game (participants are also blindfolded)

i hope you implement some of my ideas in future campaign games!

I hope some of you use my ideas!

How do you feel about the number of packs floating around? Mass produced sets like OE are still easy to find, but obviously the supply of even those is not infinite.

I agree! not really sure if they should be called “pocket models”. Sounds like a good way to break a mast!

I think they are pretty sturdy for what they are. Plus this is probably the most economical option.

Hi Ben, do you have any specific ideas on what we can do in order to try to help to bring back the game? Besides telling my friends and signing petitions of course. I know of several tabletop websites that like to do features on “retro” games that maybe we could reach out to and have them do a piece on the game?
