ParticipantI’d say the ship’s owner chooses. You control the action the ship takes, but control of the ship itself and her cargo remains with her current fleet.

ParticipantYes, they work together like that. The shoot provided by a Captain is a free action, requiring a full non-free move action.

ParticipantAn argument could be made that they are not; the use of an ability implies the game has already begun. Even though no turns have been taken, set up occurs during play.

ParticipantYes. The shoot from Blackheart’s captain ability is a free action, so if you sacrifice a crew, you can move and shoot twice.

ParticipantPer the final rules update in Savage Shores, a ship cannot be given more than two full actions a turn, unless an ability specifically says so (no such ability exists). So in this scenario, no; you will just be wasting the crew sacrifice since you already got SAT from Crimson Angel.

Participant<p style=”text-align: left;”>“For a 40-point game, players must use three islands per player (six islands for 2 players, nine islands for three players, etc.).”</p>
<p style=”text-align: left;”>“For a 40-point game, each player should contribute eight treasure coins totalling 16 gold points.”</p>
<p style=”text-align: left;”>How many islands, and how much treasure, should be used in a 100 point game for 2 players? What about a 150 point game? 200? Is there a chart somewhere that tells us this?</p>You can do whatever you want with islands, terrain, and treasures at higher point costs. However, I find the “standard” setup works well, even at higher point costs. I played a 120 point game with the 40 point island/treasure set up and didn’t have any issues. It makes the treasure feel more scarce, which makes for a more interesting game, and makes it less of a slog.

ParticipantRegarding the multiple Necklace of the Sky question, what if I possessed two of them before using the first one to teleport (two on one Ship, or one on two different ships), and thus triggering the cannot load condition?

Participantthe apparent rule that a canceller can’t cancel himself or his own ship, except the printed card rule says “within S of this ship” and his own ship is quite literally within S of itself
“Within S of this ship” specifically begins at the outermost edge of the ship’s model silohuette. By definition, it is not, in fact, within S of itself.

ParticipantI was reading through the flavor text on Zeus, and I think I’ve found definitive evidence that Guichuan is 100% a different ship. Ocean’s Edge takes place in the aftermath of the fall of the Jade Rebellion (which probably took place “off screen” during Frozen North), hence why we see reprints of their ships dispersed among the Big Six. Zeus’ flavor text describes the battle through which Blackheart took command of the Baochuan. Given that this occurs after the events of Davy Jones’ Curse, Guichuan is out and about somewhere at the same time as this battle.
Not really relevant anymore, but might be worth including in the notes for Boachuan vs Guichuan vs Zeus as the final nail in the coffin.

ParticipantMI #7:
1-2: Randomly move one treasure from this island to another wild island.
3-4: No effect.
5-6: After exploring this island, place a treasure coin from your collection with value equal to or less than one you took on the island. What is meant by “one you took”? I think it to refers to a coin loaded by the ship during the explore action and doesn’t seem like it can be used with UPS and other treasure trading abilities, because traded treasures are not actually being taken. Additionally, the rules for Explore action uses the word “take”, so I imagine the wording of this effect is specifically referring to the rules of the action.

ParticipantFor the purposes of measuring the “S away from home island” for the Mercenary keyword, is that measured from a point on the ship that touches the water (playing surface), or from any point on the ship? In a recent game Randy and I noticed that it could give Celtic Fury a bigger jump if measuring from the edge of the aftermost stern deck rather than at the waterline.
If you can measure from any point on the ship, is that measured from the height of that part of the ship to the edge of the island’s height, or just an over-the-top measurement that doesn’t factor in the height differential between the ship part and the height of the home island?
I believe it would from any point on the ship as seen from directly above. Pirates is essentially a 2D game played with 3D models.
Do you recall if there was ever a defined “width” of a cannon shot for the purposes of measuring lines of fire in tight spaces? A few years ago Spence brought up that it should probably be the ~1mm width of a deckplate card since that’s the default measuring device for cannon arcs (which makes a lot of sense to me).
I’ll let Woelf answer this one, but I don’t see why the width of LoS would matter unless you’re trying to thread a needle between two obstacles, and even then if it’s that tight you might as well roll off if you can’t agree there is a clear LoS.

ParticipantDoing it in turn order is only necessary if players get into one of those annoying “If you add that, I’m going to add this!” arguments, or when you need a highly-rigid timing structure for a tournament game or something along those lines.
That makes sense. I thought it might have had to do with ability timings, but I can’t think of anything in the game that actually would require such specific timing. Which is a good segue into another couple of questions I have:
The Comprehensive Tournament rules state that a player’s fleet must remain the same throughout the competition (Section 1.3.1 Substituting Game Pieces). Is 0LR+5 an exception to this, since the pieces are brought in during set up? Considering crew like Amos who can bring in crew from outside the game during play, I imagine this might be a similar case where the pieces are considered temporary.
Additionally, does this apply to a player’s treasure contribution, or just the fleet itself?
Not specifically a rules question, but what’s the best way to limit what players might have available for these temporary bring-ins? Other games like Magic have a 15 card side deck that, in addition to being able to swap out cards between games in a match, also act as legal targets for “bring in from out of play” effects. But Pirates doesn’t have anything like that, so what’s to limit a player from bringing an entire collection to have every option available? Or is that even an issue that warrants consideration?

ParticipantChosen when on the Placing Crew part of the rules, so after home islands have been chosen and before placing treasure. (theoretically before placing equipment as well, but it seems odd to place them separately from crew in the order of operations)
I think Woelf should probably clarify a bit more on the subject. It seems like he’s saying the choices should be made at the same time unless there is an issue where timing is relevant.

ParticipantThat’s just the generic rule for anything that might cause a disagreement. If it’s an actual organized tournament, that’s something the organizer should either specify ahead of time, or give their ruling on when it comes up.
Okay, so if I understand you correctly, I’m more or less correct concerning competitive play: if it’s not in the event description, the opponent can’t just say “I vote not to use mysterious islands in this game” and roll off? Otherwise it sets a precedent and could potentially lead to “I don’t want to play against forts/events in this game. Let’s roll off”.

ParticipantCan a Navigator place a trade current within S of a friendly ship that is lost in a fog bank? If so, is it measured from any part of the fog bank?
I think you’re correct that they can’t. The way I understand it, lost ships are treated as if they don’t have a definite location on the table; placing them inside the fogbank is merely a convenient way to mark which fogbank they are lost in.

ParticipantIf the players can’t agree on a compromise, let fate decide. Each player makes their choice, then they all roll dice or something to see who gets it.
I can understand this ruling for terrain, as the rules specifically state that players should agree on how many to use (0 is a perfectly valid amount). I have checked the Complete Rules, Pirate Code, and Comprehensive Tournament Rules, and none make such a statement regarding mysterious islands: only that each player is to provide three islands to be used in the game. Nowhere does it give the opponent a say whatsoever regarding whether the three islands a player chooses to provide can or can’t be a mysterious island. The only implied logic is that if a player doesn’t want to use mysterious islands, they simply choose not to supply them as their three islands.
Maybe for a casual game between friends, but for competition it seems like something a tournament organizer should put in the event description

ParticipantWould holy water save a submerged submarine being fired upon by a ship that has an ability can shoot submerged ships.
Yes, because that ability is affecting the sub by allowing the shoot action.
I reject this ruling. The “target” of the ability is the ship with said ability; it doesn’t directly affect submarines because the ability itself doesn’t target them. By that logic, World/Faction Hater shouldn’t work against Holy Water; Captain won’t allow a Move-Shoot targeting a ship holding Holy Water because it “allows the shoot action”.
To quote Holy Water’s entry in the Pirate Code: “This unique treasure protects a ship only from abilities that affect or target it directly. It has no effect on abilities that affect it indirectly by modifying the actions or effects of another ship.”

ParticipantDelusion Flavor Text:
“Captained by Fitzgerald, who was stabbed in the back by Blackheart for a gold medallion and left to die, and crewed by pirates killed for their treasure by their own former crewmen, the Delusion haunts the seas searching for the gold that was stolen from her in life. A glowing mirage on even the most moonless waves, the Delusion tricks greedy sailors into believing that piles of “glowing gold” await just over the horizon. But this “delusion” only means that their lives and treasure become the eternal property of the damned.”We know that Blackheart took command of the Zeus from the Jade Rebellion (the flavor text specifically states that it was originally Baochuan). However, in Rise of the Fiends, where Delusion is featured, Blackheart captains a new ship: Fool’s Hope. So what happened to the Zeus? Why is Blackheart on a new ship? According to the Delusion‘s flavor text above, we see Blackheart mentioned leaving Fitzgerald to die. It’s a loose tie, but Blackheart is already associated with another 10-master, so it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to believe that it’s not necessarily a different ship.
I do have more, but I don’t have time to type it up right now.

ParticipantI think I can make a case that Delusion = Zeus, but I need to do a bit of research into first.

ParticipantI don’t believe I’ve posted in this thread yet. In fact, I only recently managed to get my account working here. Not sure what was up, but Word Press wouldn’t let me log in by any means for a while and I just kind of forgot.
I’m Captain Vendari, reforming Pirates enthusiast. My interest in this game ebbs and flows, but for now the tide is high!
