KeymasterSaved from Miniature Trading post. Put it all the way to #2 on the Best Posts widget as well, probably for a long while in an attempt to prevent confusion/panic from people who weren’t aware or that randomly pop back into the community a while from now.
Ben
KeymasterJust updated the Sets page with no MT links. Also deleted the Elementor plugin, which was only being used on that page and the homepage. Edited the pages successfully so they appear nearly the same (homepage especially) even without the plugin. (may not be much of a speed increase, but I’m trying to decrease the “bloat” of the site a bit this month)
Ben
KeymasterAnyone else notice how scarce DJC has become? Used to be one of the easiest and cheapest sets to acquire. Now HWG is out and there’s hardly anything on eBay.

Some rare stuff up; Grand Wind and some DJC LE’s: https://ebay.to/306O4QE

KeymasterAfter he liked my Instagram post a few years back, today I sent PotC actor Martin Klebba (Marty) his crew card from the PotC set along with an unopened pack from the set! 😀
Ben
Keymaster$46 for the Grinder and Terrox is a new high for that pair I think. Still a some solid auctions going on.
Ben
KeymasterIt’s gone.
Ben
KeymasterMy favorite pieces are: Blackwatch (A DJC), Jormungandr (C DJC), and Celtic Fury (M SS).
Nice ones! The Blackwatch is fun to use, a really cool looking ship, and absolutely devastating.
Welcome aboard! Between you, Xerecs, and JW Darkhurst, there are plenty of Pirates lore creators out there. Now that I think of it, I’ve done more than I ever expected to as well, having created flavor text for all the hundreds of game pieces in my Epic Seas custom set.
Ben
KeymasterMT not working for me, maybe it will be down on it’s final day. 🙁
Ben
KeymasterDo we have your Game Ideas thread?
I gave it the full page treatment here. I’m pretty sure I have all of my “best content” that I created, so anything major is almost definitely saved. Tons of it has already been reposted here, and Game Ideas can be found in the Best Posts widget now seen on most of the site’s sidebars. (not the forum one since I want to keep that forum-specific I think, with the exception of Recent Posts)
Ben
KeymasterNow that it has reached 150 responses, it’s a good time to check out the results of the main survey! 😀 Thanks for responding to the surveys!
June 29, 2019 at 5:43 PM in reply to: What do you miss most about the game being out of print? #6673Ben
KeymasterI miss the epicness of five-masters when first starting. I don’t know if it was just my friend group or what, but we could not pull five-masters from the first set. So when people finally had pulled 1 to use, it was like “woah!”
I agree completely, and I was also a bit frustrated by Spanish Main early on in that regard. Pulled La Magnifique from CC and it only made me love the game more. There’s something really special about pulling a rare ship that is the largest in the game (for a while) and feeling powerful.
That’s actually why I go by “Dread Pirate” on here. It was the last rank I earned before we stopped playing. Good times.
Neat! Makes me think about trying to have custom forum “identities” sometime… not the same as MT (Guru, etc), but maybe someday.
Ben
KeymasterThey said they were getting more so I would get on my bike and travel there every day to see if the packs had arrived yet. They ended up being delayed several times so the poor lady who worked there had to deal with me asking her every day for like a month.
That is intense!!
Glad to be a part of the site. Been exploring a bit over the last few days and it’s really something. It may even be what’s keeping the pirate game alive. Thanks.
Thank you! Glad you’re here. I think it’s a combination of things keeping the game alive – the game itself is so good (or at least, good enough) that people cannot help themselves from coming back to it from time to time. There are so many fun things to do or discuss that it’s hard to run out of entertainment. (playing, collecting, custom game pieces, custom islands and terrain, trading, podcasts, videos, gameplay theory, making fleets, learning the rules and game pieces, etc.)
Ben
KeymasterHuzzah!
Double catamarans are basically an abomination. XD
Fascinating to finally see the ability of St. Pierre come into play.
Ah, I remember nearly running out of 6 coins during CTO and probably EE and rummaging through my treasure tin for more. XD Funny since I was just in there again for possibly the first time since CTO ended, and I could tell because there were lots of the same numbers all in one place. XD (typical leftovers from a resource game)
I think this is probably your best-looking game yet, which makes sense given the abundance of custom islands. (I think my previous favorite was the winter EE game, but I’m not totally sure) It might be harder to reach things on the table, but I like the look of this more square ocean than the more elongated ones of some past games.
Glad you’re piling on the generic crew, it can make the game a bit more flavorful in a way.
Awesome that you’re using chain exploring!! Rare but fun! (also nice to not need to move some of those ships every turn, I remember XD)
LOVE the wide/music shots as always. The Atlanta sailing into the sun reminded me of PotC. 🙂
If I had the fleet size and purchasing power of the Spanish, I wouldn’t want to send any hoists out and about without an escort or three.
Seems like nobody in your group wants the French to win again or something… kinda wish I could join the game and kick some ass with them. XD
Will be funny if their “gold threat” actually incentivizes other factions to HI raid them lol. A fleet in being is the real deterrent.Ben

June 28, 2019 at 2:33 PM in reply to: Does anyone else think shipwrecks in the game are awesome? #6591Ben
KeymasterTwo thoughts I had would be if the ship was crewed when it was sunk, the owner can do a sort of “saving throw” if they roll highed than the number of masts the ship had when it started it becomes a wreck.
Neat. Though I think it should have to be within S of an island or reef for that to happen.
That or if a ship sinks within an L or maybe 2S from an island or terrain it is in shallow water and becomes a wreck. Could make things interesting by saying before you can explore a hostile wreck you have to kill the crew, marines and musketeers could still shoot from their wrecks and even unique treasure like “Deck Cannon” can still be used.
I definitely like that in general. I think Musketeers would be a lot more interesting if they were treated similar to Marines. I’ve also had various thoughts about crew on a derelict fighting back in various ways against capture… though some of the specifics escape me right now.
Ben
Keymaster(Ben: Let me know if this isn’t ok with you.)
It’s awesome; exactly what this thread is for! 😀
What does “built in tower” mean? I can see everything fine but I’ve never seen the format of a google spreadsheet look like that. (not sure if it’s the settings you have enabled)

KeymasterIf they sell for the starting prices I will have lost money on both of them… I came up with the shipping cost, added in a $6 box I bought for shipping and a 20% fee eBay will charge. If I get some decent bidding I have 16 more 36 packs to sell in the next few months.
Who knows what will happen, but it’s very possible that the SCS box could go for a lot, and definitely way more than the starting bid. I just shared both on the Buy/Sell/Trade Facebook group to get them more exposure.
16 lots of 36 packs?! That’s a lot!! O_O 😀 (576 packs; 1,152 ships!)
Ben
KeymasterThe searchable reference database will be by far the biggest loss, at least as far as non-personal items are concerned. Is that something that could eventually be recreated here, or on an attached website? Obviously it would take a ridiculous amount of work to set back up, so it wouldn’t be anything happening any time soon.
I’ve thought about it and talked about it a bit, but it’s yet another big project. For now the Master Spreadsheet is decent. It’s not as convenient or easy to use as the MT searchable database, but you can use ctrl+f to find specific stuff and you can enable filter views to sort by mast count/base move/etc.
You can also go to Edit>Find and Replace (ctrl+h) to search all the sheets at once. (for example, a specific ship name)
Ben
KeymasterFor example, you shoot and hit with 3 cannons. Do you remove two masts from the target and then board it once, or do you remove zero masts and board it three times in a row?
The second one. Every shot is grapple shot and the ship is not capable of eliminating masts with her own cannons (unless you cancelled the ability…).
Devil’s Plunder
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: C
Point Value: 15
Number of Masts: 3
Cargo Space: 6
Base Move: S
Cannons: 4S-2L-4L
Ability: Junk. This ship gets +1 to her d6 rolls when her cargo hold is full.Flavor text: One of the few Cursed ships that regularly transports gold and goods of the living, the Devil’s Plunder has a greedy crew who become enraged and defensive when their junk is laden with loot.
Been ranting about this ability a little bit lately, so hopefully this one isn’t OP….
Melegaunt
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: C
Point Value: 3
Ability: Fear. If this crew would be eliminated, place it on your home island instead.Flavor text: Mysterious and possibly more powerful than he is letting on, Melegaunt is a shadowy and cunning figure who enjoys plotting from the shadows. It remains to be seen if he is in control of a Cursed fleet, or even his own vessel.

Keymaster@xeriousone: Welcome aboard the ship! 😀 Glad to have ye aboard.
Since my Miniaturetrading account was accused of hacking for using my regular login information
Sounds familiar; “hack attempt registered” perhaps. XD 2019 has definitely been the fall of MT. At least we have plenty of options in terms of keeping the community going.
Those lots look great, impressive quantity. With very nice starting bids and free shipping I think both should sell well without issue.
Ben
KeymasterI was wondering, then: what articles have we saved with screenshots? Is there a repository or database? What are we missing? We also have a database of all the ships, right? I recall reading that somewhere, I hope I’m right.
Here is an Imgur folder with the MT thread pictures I’ve saved. Soon I’m going to make a site post here with links to all of the different stuff I’ve saved. As I talked about last year, the database and miniature pictures have all been saved. (that thread has basically ALL my progress updates along with lists of what’s been saved/etc)
And is there anything else that needs to be done before Miniature Trading finally dies?
Everyone can save their own fleets, Miniature Reviews, profiles, and whatever else they want. Beyond that, you can save old threads if you want along with other people’s fleets and/or reviews if you want. Hopefully it won’t die someday too, but you can also plug in URL’s to the Wayback Machine to save them there.

KeymasterConsulting with the designers before new sets went to the printers. Even though they didn’t use all of my suggestions and ideas, it was really neat being directly involved in the design to help shape the way things came out. Quite a few problematic things got knocked down or fixed before they could become a problem.
That is awesome; what a cool experience to have for a game you really like. If I manage to get one of the later game designers on the podcast I can bring it up as a topic. 😀
I think opening packs and getting new stuff in general will be a lot of the answers. For all the flaws of a collectible game, it can be pretty exciting.
Ben
KeymasterIs the intention that it switches to boarding as soon as any cannon hits and then the remaining cannons are ignored, or could this potentially board up to 4 separate times within a single shoot action? (Plus multiple additional boardings via Switchblade and/or standard boarding.)
Doesn’t switch over while shooting; each cannon can still shoot even if a previous grapple shot was successful.
@Jake: Welcome aboard the ship! 😀 The Retribution is fairly costed. However, I think you could make her more interesting (IMO at least) by incorporating the flavor text into abilities. Based on the flavor, +1 to ram rolls and “Enemy ships get -1 to their boarding rolls against this ship” make sense to me.
As JW stated, Requin can easily be 3 points. Realistically the SAT ability is worth more than that in the game (and you don’t want to give cheap SAT to every non-major faction just for the sake of it), but 9 is definitely unnecessarily high. Is this a continuation of Le Requin from Crimson Coast? Awesome name for a custom set btw. 🙂
@JW: I feel that would make the Mirage less broken.
Might as well get a little bit wild…. XD
Rapid River Natives
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: U
Point Value: 12
Number of Masts: 1
Cargo Space: 2
Base Move: S+L
Cannons: 3S
Ability: Mercenary. Native Canoe. If this canoe begins a move action within S of land, she gets +S to her base move. When this canoe sinks an enemy ship, as a free action you may load as much gold as this canoe can carry from the sinking ship.Flavor text: Tribal natives of the Pacific and Australia have joined forces with the discontented mercenaries in the area. Piloting dozens or even hundreds of small shallow-water canoes, they have become a force to be reckoned with. Knowing the territory and ocean terrain has helped them greatly in avoiding disaster. They have taken a liking to piracy, often looting European merchant ships before finishing them off.
I’m generally of the opinion that native canoes with more than 1 cargo space each are OP by default. However, I think these may be fine due to the Mercenary keyword.
General Sod
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: U
Point Value: 7
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Marine. This crew can use his abilities on land. Forts and friendly crew within L of this crew get +1 to their d6 rolls. This crew can move around on islands.Flavor text: Wanting to get every piece of action he can, Sod has transferred to the Pacific, where his expertise can be used on island battlefields. He is willing to do whatever it takes to thrive in any environment, as the world’s wars gradually shift from land to sea.
This is my “land combat” crew.

June 26, 2019 at 5:56 PM in reply to: Rules for Thought #34 – Repairing by d6 roll, Creatures repair by eating crew? #6484Ben
KeymasterI prefer that a Shipwright’s main benefit should remain the option to repair at sea and on wild islands, while the home island boost comes mostly from the extra facilities and staff that are assumed to be available there.
Good point, I just see it differently. A master shipwright who is capable of making full mast repairs while at sea should be even more effective with those facilities, supplies, and staff available to them. 🙂
Some of the creatures seem like a single crew may not be enough meat for an entire mast like the sea dragons. Maybe something like eat crew equal to half a creatures segments rounded down, to regrow a segment. Shark would be fine eating a single crew while a kraken or sea dragon, as larger creatures would need to eat more to heal themselves.
A solid point, but I feel it would almost never happen with limitations like that. Unless the sea creature had the Massacre ability (eliminate all crew with a successful boarding). Sea creatures can be pretty vulnerable when not submerged and haven’t been that effective in combat in my experience.
Ben
KeymasterWas going to unlock these at some point; I’ll just post them here at this point.

KeymasterMy latest game was really weird!
June 24, 2019 at 2:42 PM in reply to: Rules for Thought #34 – Repairing by d6 roll, Creatures repair by eating crew? #6410Ben
KeymasterA neat twist on that would be to roll a d6 and compare it to the current number of masts on your ship when you give the action. If the roll is higher, you get an extra mast, otherwise you just get the usual 1. This would make it easier to get little ships back to full strength or get heavily-damaged larger ones to a more usable state quickly, but getting the larger ships back to 100% would take longer.
Great idea!
Shipwrights could remain pretty much as-is for either case, or they could do their normal thing plus give a small boost to the home island roll, like +1 to the result, so you have better odds of getting the bonus mast but it’s still no guarantee.
I actually like the idea of making it automatic with shipwrights since they’re not worth using very often. Letting ships with shipwrights repair 2 masts in one action while docked at home or a fort could at least make someone consider using one instead of a cannoneer perhaps.
I did make a custom sea monster that can repair while submerged.
Ben
KeymasterGreat report. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into these big games and reports; I know what it’s like. 🙂 (except for the video reports) I noticed you posted this one around 2:30am PST!
I like how the music gives the game a different feel. Reminds me of naval history documentaries, or that I’m actually involved in the game from like a shop in port or something. 🙂
Wow, did not expect that to be the first shoot action! Not sure why the Cursed sailed the Raven back there….
Never seen such a strategy in regards to the Spanish and their trading ports. Their fleet size makes allies optional, and I think I would much rather have the resources at home so I could cash them in when they become valuable.
Interesting that you can launch your own faction ships at a trading port. No crew is a big mistake I think… unless it’s some kind of chain exploring operation.
Shipwreck Pathway is really cool!
Great shots at the end!
