November 27, 2018 at 9:40 PM #2206ChrisParticipantWell, since you asked, I would like to hear a discussion on various historical ships represented in the game. Perhaps comparing/contrasting their role and setup in the game as opposed to reality. Why some persons or ships never made it into the game. For example, why no HMS Victory or Lord Nelson? Why is the Philadelphia a 2-masted blockade runner in game when it actually was a 36-gun frigate in real life? Just some thoughts to consider!

I agree. We did a very brief segment on the F&S historical pack, but it would be interesting to examine things more in-depth. It’s definitely something we’d have to spend a bunch of time on researching, or look in Miniature Trading to see if there’s information there. Wizkids definitely dropped the ball on representing ships (and even crew, like Dragut) accurately. Some other people have brought up that putting too many historical things into the game would potentially bring up legal problems from the descendants of historical figures, or something like that.
Here’s a great classic thread you can check out:
The Direction of the game, from the Designer.
It’s also one of the primary reasons I’m making a massive historical custom set.

December 22, 2018 at 5:06 PM #2519BenKeymasterPirates CSG Podcast #37: Optimizing and Using Lesser Ships and Crew | Circle of Blood Review
Question of the Day: How do you get lesser ships and crew into action?
ShoutEngine: http://shoutengine.com/PiratesCSGPodcast/pirates-csg-podcast-37-optimizing-and-using-less-70984
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUmfhnKMlnY
Archive.org: https://archive.org/details/PiratesCSGPodcast37
“thoughts on optimizing less/not utilized ships”
-MUST have speed, so helmsmen pretty much always necessary (especially since a lot of lesser ships are slow). Beyond that, try to find a niche use for specific game pieces. For example, 1 cargo and fast speed? (Dark Fox) Scout explorer with crew or S-Explorer. OR, flotilla tug with surprise crew face down (canceller/captain/etc).
Slow with high cargo – home waters hybrid to get nearby gold and protect HI, potentially use with navigator. Could also use with gold factory bonus strategy, especially in case of Spanish “treasure galleons” such as Isabela, Concepcion, etc.
-Keep in mind that your competition will not want to dumb things down (people like to win and often use the same OP ships all the time), so have realistic outcome expectations and propose alternative game ideas like “make worst fleet possible, pass to other player” to get lesser ships/crew into action. Other than that, more points = more points to use on gimmicks and suboptimal experiments
“Rules variants to get the ships on the table.”
-Require specific base move – Challenge of Snails, all L, etc.
-Require all cargo holds to be full during setup – force players to make tradeoffs on when to dump crew – right at start, at wild islands (making them accessible to other players), or go with total war/all combat strategy? Con-exacerbates how OP Sac already is.
-Require each player to use ONLY ships AND named crew they’ve never used before (for starters, look through what you’ve never punched out!), or a pure faction fleet from a faction you’ve never played.
-Look through Fleet Challenge Archives to find fun restrictions http://www.miniaturetrading.com/im/forum/viewtopic/t=8492///

New Idea: Challenge. Your next game of Pirates CSG should NOT be at 40 points! (20/60/etc)
Question of the Day: Any ideas for new segments we could pursue?

(one previous known high was $232.50, hard to find others that have been exchanged since vosarnath’s at MT a handful of years back)
-Having slight technical issues that may compromise podcast episodes and THC a bit
-Between godmason being busy, my impending life changes, somewhat declining content base, and technical issues, expect shorter and less episodes this year. Suggesting topics is great!!
-Short solo episodes may sometimes be even less than 30 minutes, I can cover a bunch of stuff quickly it seems, especially with only one opinion on each topic.
-Trying to do a post/page every day at PwB, going through MT content for some of my best stuff
-Commenting on my content at PwB will help the site grow and be popular as a “hub” for Pirates CSG – plus I’ll respond to all comments!! Thank you!
-Looking at podcast data from SE, seem to have about 33 unique IP’s per episode.
Game essentials – measuring card or straws – latter great for arches and planning moves/premeasuring, Use a big d6 from SE boxes/etc for ease of use and likely better results (fun idea though – 10 tiny d6 for a Zeus shoot action since all cannons the same)
Another idea on playing solo without favoring a faction – really delve into each faction, especially before playing. Maybe stop playing favorites in general, force yourself to use a faction you’ve NEVER played before. Read a book on the Spanish Empire and then see if you like playing them better. Make customs inspired by pop culture to play the Cursed or Vikings, etc. Just think outside the box and try to really become a fan of each faction. Partly due to knowing almost all the ships and crew in the game, I find it easy and fun to play as any faction. (ex: Vikings in CG4 should be fun, and somewhat groundbreaking in terms of factional play in CG’s)
Try reading to get passionate: https://amzn.to/2AQkdBs
New segment – Random Pirate Code page, muse on rules/strategy of results https://pirateswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/The-Pirate-Code-FAQ-Dec-2016.pdf
Interesting fleets for x point games – try 20 points sometime. Fast, forces you to be efficient with building, probably no +5’s, easy to get going, fun with multiple players OR multiple fleets per player, etc. Played Water World game against repkosai in 2017 with Libellule + bonuses, was very fun!!

January 19, 2019 at 10:36 PM #2768BenKeymasterYay! the first Pirates podcast of 2019! I really appreciate the work that has gone into producing the content.
I appreciate your upvotes and feedback! I recorded two additional episodes with Xerecs the same day as #38, so I should be able to upload the next two weekends as well.
I haven’t forgotten about your suggestion above either, it’s just something that will take a bit more work and research than most of the other topics.
January 20, 2019 at 12:49 PM #2773JeremiahParticipantGlad to see the first Podcast of 2019. Thanks to everyone who participates in this content. Listening to your discussions and topics of Pirates is away fun while I work and I greatly appreciate the work you all put in.
Regarding your concern about available content and podcast frequency I would suggest you worry less about the number of episodes/ how frequent they are and more about quality of content.
As you pointed out in this latest podcast you all maintained a fairly consistent podcast schedule in 2018 covering all the sets and many customs while maintaining good quality discussions and format. As schedules change and life changes it makes sense to me that you all can’t record as often as you would like and personally I have not problem with that. It takes time out of your schedule to record and publish this content. My suggestion forward then would be to focus more on the podcast content and discussion than the regularity of the content. (recording a lot at once then publishing it out in pieces over several weeks is a good model that can save you all a lot of time is widely used for Youtube channels and podcasts alike).
Regarding suggestions (I may have said some of these before on MT) here are a few ideas that range from easily accessible to some near journalist ideas.
#1. Continue to cover customs (maybe less frequently if they are not in popular demand)
#2. Go over Godmason’s, Ben’s, and others Top 10 Ranking threads. You all covered thousands of ships over each of the set reviews but now you can take some time to really cover the cream of the crop. I would suggest even going over it by faction, ship type, strategy focus(gold vs combat).
#3. Phone interview/skype sessions with woelf, or perhaps other former wizkids employee’s. Talk about whatit was like to work in Wizkids. How the sets were designed and put together. Other insider info
#4. Interview other facebook or forum players who may have expereinced the tournaments and other pirates events back in the old days.
January 20, 2019 at 1:11 PM #2774BenKeymasterGlad to see the first Podcast of 2019. Thanks to everyone who participates in this content. Listening to your discussions and topics of Pirates is away fun while I work and I greatly appreciate the work you all put in.
Thanks, that’s great to hear!
Thank you for the suggestions and feedback. Xerecs and I both enjoy reviewing customs, and you and Cazador enjoy that too, so we’ll probably continue that to some extent.
Covering the Rankings threads is a possibility. I think it would be best as a debate topic – each person who would be scheduled for that episode would make their ranked list (possibly different than before if their opinion has changed), and then there would be a debate about the differences. I’m just worried that it would devolve into playing differences, such as 40 points vs. campaign games. Or simply playing preferences – Xerecs is far luckier with Broadsides Attack than almost anyone else, so he has a different view of the ability. In addition, I’ve spent SO much time making rankings and publishing and republishing them. This is part of why I don’t want to do more ship reviews in almost any form – I’ve talked about almost every ship in the game at least twice between the set reviews and Collection Review Series on youtube, and some 3+ times. There’s a big reason I’m republishing a lot of content at PwB – evergreen content that can be preserved for people to look at years from now, so I don’t have to repeat myself whenever someone asks the same question I’ve seen/heard before. There was also decent participation in a lot of the original threads at MT, so plenty of the discussion/debate has already been had. However I like the idea of trying a Rankings debate to see how it goes. Let me know if you’d like to participate in that kind of thing.
I have asked Woelf about being on an episode, but there are some technical difficulties to work out. A phone call may or may not be a way around that. You must have read my mind though, because one of my podcast goals for this year is to reach out to the game designers themselves (plus other people involved with the game I hope) in an attempt to get them on the podcast! Although the 3 episodes from the 17th seem to have been recorded without a hitch, I’d prefer to fix my (possibly trivial?) computer issue first because I really don’t want to have issues if it was a big episode like that.
Good final suggestion too. We’ve consistently advertised in the past that just about anyone is welcome to guest on the podcast, but perhaps reaching out directly to some people could help more. A lot of people seem to have moved on permanently from actively participating with anything to do with the game, or stop responding.
I like the suggestions though, and hope the podcast will have another good year.

One Handed John was one of my favorites. Even though it is untested yet I like the concept of uncertainty and chaos it could add plus it’s similar to other pirates pieces that teleport you (not events but Unique treasure). S+S may be just fine as long as the ship is not allowed to move afterwards. In this way the other player would have a turn to react or attack but the massive movement bonus would still be valuable. There certainly are issues such as putting him on a Home island raider and then teleport right to the home island could very easily be a game changer in that regard.
<span style=”color: #000000; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.6667px; font-weight: bold; white-space: pre-wrap;”> Do you enjoy the custom review episodes more or less than the other episodes?</span>
I like the variety, I enjoy hearing the ideas of new game pieces and potential strategy behind them. I enjoy hearing the comments on my own pieces as well as learn new ideas from other creators.
As side note lighthouses are intended to be compatible with forts, in fact I created them with that in mind. Their weakness means they can be alone but it’s more risky than if its near a fort. Also I added some very basic lighthouses to each faction, except to the Cursed (which I should probably add one) and Mercenaries (which only has one very special lighthouse) that only have the ability of trade current. For example Paradise Island, my intention here is to help add an element of territory expansion where you can establish home seas where your speed and defense (or offense) is improved.
January 30, 2019 at 1:57 PM #2932BenKeymasterI think my alternate way of posting the podcast is why your quotes have the coding in them… yet another thing on my Pirates to do list….
There certainly are issues such as putting him on a Home island raider and then teleport right to the home island could very easily be a game changer in that regard.
Great point. I have a feeling his ability could be OP and swing games too much.
I like the variety, I enjoy hearing the ideas of new game pieces and potential strategy behind them.
I like the way you phrase that. It really is like looking at new game pieces for the first time, similar to the previews from back in the day and when a brand new set was released. Since it’s unlikely that there will be “official” game pieces released again, customs are the best thing we have, and it CAN be exciting. Kinda tired of relying on a company that appears to have no interest in the game for say on “official” stuff. I reckon that almost everyone who plays consistently at this point uses at least one house rule (sometimes accidentally if they don’t know the rules well enough), so why not consider most customs borderline “official” and certainly available for playing. (as long as both players agree of course)
I like your thoughts on Paradise Island. Funny enough I made a custom lighthouse today (concept, not physical like the ones used in CTO), just have to input it to the spreadsheet and work out any issues.

As a topic you may want to discuss, what are your thoughts on the current market of Pirates items? Is it still overall a sellers market? Or have prices started to shift back towards the buyer again?

Thanks for the suggestion, that’s a good idea. Without analyzing numbers it seems that the past few months have seen a bit of a decrease in auction prices, but it’s still just wildly unpredictable. As proved by the Shui Xian randomly setting a record going for $79 at auction. XD
February 6, 2019 at 3:28 PM #3066Ve1mParticipantBeen greatly enjoying the podcast Ben. I’m super appreciative of your dedication to this game after so many years. I was on miniature trading for a while under the same name, but it’s been years since I’ve been active.
I had a potential podcast topic idea. First off, the rules I use to play with family and friends have slowly morphed into our own rule-set over the years, with death-match being primarily how we play. I generally like looking at games/rules with as realistic of a mindset as possible, and something that always frustrated me was that in our games we would spend so much time skirting our fleets around each other, with one fleet finally moving in and getting obliterated before they could even fire back (which in terms of realism doesn’t make sense IMO).
Now to the actual question, have you ever tried to use alternating turn by turn combat for individual ships during combat? For example, 5 of my brothers ships move into range of 5 of mine, it’s now my turn, and I choose to fire at him, but instead of all 5 of my ships firing before he can do anything, we tried where 1 of my ships could first (I get an advantage due to my tactical positioning), but after that we alternate firing back and fourth until the battle is finished. We tried several ideas, like all my ships could fire 2 of their cannons each, and then my brother could fire back alternating turns during combat.
I hope all this makes sense (my rules knowledge, while it used to be extensive, is very rusty after years of not playing), but I was hoping you could discuss this on the podcast with a guest, I’d love to hear your guy’s opinions on alternating combat.
Thanks!

Ahoy there, I remember you don’t worry! Though I remember it as velm with an L rather than 1. Thanks, glad you’ve been enjoying the podcast.

It makes sense and is something I’ve thought about. I have this or something similar printed out, but I haven’t tried it yet. Good thing to discuss in general, whether it’s just combat or for all actions in a regular game. Thanks for the suggestion!
February 7, 2019 at 12:34 PM #3103Ve1mParticipantAh this Action Phase System looks great! I’m going to do some experimenting with this rule set and my own custom rules and see what works. I like the idea of the aggressor having some advantage in the fight, (to spur a quicker and more volatile game).
In my custom rules, my family and friends really liked being able to move and shoot in the same turn, (essentially giving ships 2 actions per turn, but only allowing each action once. No double shooting or double moving). I think this Action Phase System might work great with that! And it’ll be easier to convince people to play if the games don’t take 6-10 hours each XD
February 7, 2019 at 12:38 PM #3104BenKeymasterYou can thank @CaptainVendari for that one. It’s intriguing but as Woelf has said many times, it’s tough to implement a system like that without breaking a lot of the existing rules and abilities.
Are you saying that every ship essentially gets the Captain ability built-in with your rules?
I’m curious though, if more combat is encouraged, how would that make the games take less time?
February 11, 2019 at 12:25 AM #3169Ve1mParticipantSorry meant to respond sooner, busy weekend. Yeah, I think Woelf is right, there’s gonna be a lot of potential rule issues with the Action Phase System. I’m still wondering if I can make it fully work though…
For me also, I was in a pretty unique situation when I started playing in the fact that I had a big group that would play. My brother, dad, and friends we’re really into it, so we would have these massive 6 or so player battles that would take forever if everyone were just given one action per turn. Trying to keep 6 people on track while we’re enjoying the time together was pretty hard (and explaining the rules to new-comers), so we started allowing a player to move and shoot in our death-matches. And rule discrepancies we would handle as we went. Definitely had some disagreements, but almost always we used the rules as a guide to make a fair decision. A bit unorthodox for sure, but we had a blast!

Are they still into it then? (“we’re”)
One action per turn isn’t how the main rules work – were you only allowing players to have a single ship do something each turn? You can give all your ships actions on every turn.
Feel free to submit any questions you might have for James Ernest on the podcast.
February 12, 2019 at 2:16 AM #3194Ve1mParticipantWe haven’t played in a very long time, but they do still talk about the game from time to time. So I have high hopes of getting us back together for a huge battle here. I was always the main collector of the game, but a few of them had ships of their own.
Ah and yeah I messed up my wording. We were allowing each player to move and shoot ALL of their ships each turn. Seemed to help with game flow for our death-matches. And then later, we added our version of the Action Phase System for combat, but that was only the last few games we played before we stopped.
I was really glad to hear your having James Ernest on the podcast! I’ve been thinking of some questions that I’ll submit tomorrow for it. I’m really pumped to listen!
