KeymasterI guess the big issue I see would be that it would make you the owner of the license not some other corporation.
Indeed, I would likely set up some kind of corporation to get past legal loopholes and whatnot. It is confusing and I’d have to do a lot of research – even if funds were somehow raised to convince them to sell the license, where does it get “placed” legally?
not that you personally are the issue just that once the ball is in your court where do we go from there?
I certainly like the idea of making money on Pirates after all I’ve done, but honestly I also like the idea of somehow making it public domain so anyone can make anything and nobody gets sued for it. XD
Would kickstarter also include money to buy the capital necessary to produce more pirates?
That’s where it seems like a community this small would have trouble. Who knows what NECA would even want for the license to make Pirates CSG stuff – it seems like $10,000+ or in the tens of thousands would be a bare minimum given the prior success of the product and what could be done with it long term. It would be devastating to somehow raise a huge amount only for them to not fork it over for nearly any amount for whatever reason(s). I would imagine that producing enough sets/cards to turn a small profit would cost far more than the license.
How does supporting buying the license further help the return of pirates?
I mean if the license were in the hands of the community or public domain, myself and/or others certainly would have a Kickstarter by now to make the game again.
I know if means we have the potential to make new ones but I think you would want to sell a broader package than just the license purchasing.
Great point, I just wanted to throw the idea out there. The legal stuff is the first hurdle, I wasn’t thinking much past that because even buying the license would seem to be an enormous sum.
I would almost see a kickstarter for raising funds to start a new and separate pirates csg company being more likely than just buying the license. That way people who support the Kickstart would/could become shareholders in the new company. Then with the purchase of the license and a small set up for printing you could revive the game and just sell via online purchases or whatnot to people and of course those who helped support the company.
That makes sense.
I hate to admit it, but I’m not that hopeful about this, at least not in the short term. I can hardly get the community to post on forums or answer messages, let alone raise thousands of dollars. I just want to force the issue a bit and get people’s opinions on what is even remotely possible from a starting point.

KeymasterI had the oarsmen on the MB to be sacrificed to whirlpools and Dead Man’s Chest.
Sacrificed with what? You’ve got the wrong Fantasma – the SCS version doesn’t have Sac.
Ben
KeymasterI don’t have nearly enough pieces to make this (I have sadly few UTs) but I somehow think this could be not the worst Maman Brigitte fleet ever.
Definitely not. It’s a solid concept, but why the oarsmen on the MB? They take up space after the first one due to the no-stacking rule, and would be better off the ship to optimize cargo. Ghost Ship on a stealer is nice, but Trogs could be an alternative as well. Glad you listed the coins (attention to detail that I would sometimes forget to bother including), but I think it would be a 1 instead of a 2 to get to 15 gold contributed. (or 7-6-2)

You simply pay 14 points for Cain and the canoes; you’re paying 11 for the canoes and 3 for the Captain ability. Captain can’t be free, but there’s no reason to make the canoes too expensive just because Cain is a very capable chieftain.

March 3, 2019 at 8:30 AM in reply to: Is there a better construction material than styrene to make the ships with? #3490Ben
Keymaster@Robert: They really do look cool. They must be more durable than the styrene as well. It would be a little funky to have metal ships for a game based on wooden ships in the Age of Sail, but it’s a neat option.
Ben
KeymasterOptional non-Spanish Main stuff: Admiral Castro instead of Captain
That’s what I’m seeing in the fleet (the BC 5 point EA Castro) – with the 3 point SAT Castro the Acorazado setup would come to 29 points.
Similarly, wouldn’t the Sea Nymph setup in the second fleet come to 20 points with the 4 point Hawkins from SM? I’d recommend a captain instead of musketeer on the Snipe. Solid fleets either way.
Unfortunately the set specifics and ability abbreviations/etc may get lost in translation without the fleets section at MT, but at least we can still use that too. Not expecting this thread to take off after so many fleets have been created since 2004, but it can be fun to bounce ideas around.

KeymasterHowwww have I never come across Le Bon Marin before today? Instantly one of my favorite ships. I need to find a copy somewhere.
I’m seeing one in the UK.
RV was a GREAT set, especially for ships and forts. You can make plenty of competitive fleets just from that set alone.
March 2, 2019 at 8:31 PM in reply to: Is there a better construction material than styrene to make the ships with? #3482Ben
KeymasterYou might be able to do metal. See products like metal earth.
Wow! Did not expect someone to suggest metal. Looking up some stuff, looks very cool. I would mostly be worried about the cost, and potential cutting hazard. Also would probably be more difficult to color things in the way the current game is. That would certainly be a cool option. Only other metal ships I can recall are the ones made by burnthills for old_man, but those were huge aluminum ships.
A more realistic route for a reboot might be to ditch the buildable aspect entirely, and just have the ships molded in plastic and sold as “blind boxes”. There are a lot of popular collectible toys that use this route, some of them with games involved. Plastic toys are fairly durable and can be produced inexpensively, damage markers could be used instead of removable masts. I personally wouldn’t like this option for aesthetic reasons but I feel like this might be a way the game could be revived.
That makes sense, but definitely isn’t my preference either. I feel that it could dampen some of the ships’ individuality, and make for a “cookie cutter” game in some ways. Though with advancements and demonetization of 3D printing and whatnot, perhaps some version of that could work. I also really like that the ships can be taken apart due to combat, with myself and others valuing the constructible nature of the game highly.
Ben
KeymasterI have about 3 complete Batavian Bats and El Duques haha
Cool. I wouldn’t be opposed to having another one of either of those, but it’s not necessarily going to be worth doing a 1 for 1 trade. I’ll check to see if I have a full extra Death Wind.

KeymasterFor the first time in quite a while I just had a flurry of fleet ideas. Since the MT crisis started last August I’ve been hesitant to post much there, and I don’t have time to flesh out and post all these ideas in full.
I’m (re)posting 2 fleets per day here at PwB, with my personally legendary American Pirates fleet today. It really amazes me how well that fleet was able to perform despite not even being optimized. Although the obvious swap is to go from Bandido to Banshee’s Cry + helmsman and explorer, I suddenly realized further potential “optimizations” to make involving at least one of the other two ships. This led to a crazed flurry of ideas, which was really exciting and fun to experience again. I’ve been busy with non-gaming Pirates stuff since August of last year and even before that, so it was really cool to have a blast of “power gamer” (phrase I learned from James Ernest) thoughts and get really mentally involved with the strategic and fleet building aspects of the game.
It’s hilarious that my AP fleet can do well in competitive play without even being truly optimized. It’s a little scary to think that it could be better with some modifications. For example: (H=Helmsman, E=Explorer)
American Pirates 2: Same Roanoke setup, BC w/H+E instead of Bandido, Bloody Jewel w/H+E, Rover, Mermaid
AP’s 3: Roanoke, BC w/H+E, Darkhawk II w/ H+E
AP’s 4: Same as original AP’s but with NH + explorer instead of Amity + explorer
AP’s 5? Combine basic Hai Peng setup with Roanoke setup
French American Pirates: Roanoke setup (or Pirate hybrid sac monster), Bloody Jewel + helmsman, Intrepide, BC w/H+E, HC
-Modify above setups by replacing Roanoke with Victoire less an oarsman. (French Pirates?)
Pirates fleet: 300 FD + Havana Black, helmsman, explorer, oarsmen x2, Darkhawk II + Captain Blackheart, helmsman, explorer, oarsmen x2. Last 4 points for HC + Mermaid, or BC + JM
Pirate fleet with Darkhawk II and Hai Peng, + HC and/or BC?
Alright, that’s my little “fleet blast” for now. Hopefully I’ll eventually get these posted here and MT. Just a quick trip inside the mind of a Pirates fanatic trying to make competitive fleets even better and more optimized with tons of variations. XD Love this game.

KeymasterThe Warring Tribes would just look like a regular 5 mast, but preferably with a large set of oars on both sides if made in real life.
I see that Cain and the Canoes have different point costs, which confuses me a little. The chieftain crew is supposed to assume the full cost of the canoes, so shouldn’t the canoes also be 14 points, or should Cain be 11?
Cain also has Captain, which has to cost 3 points. He is still assuming their full cost of 11, but has an additional ability on top of that. I know it’s a little funky, but I like playing with the idea of named chieftains to spice up the canoes and flavor a bit (similar to the God Chieftain of the “tribal mercenaries”).
PS: Let’s play CG4!

Keymastera standard 40 point game, but ships are damaged permanently and realistically (shot by actual cannons when they are hit in game)
I want to do something like that someday, but you’d have to have bigger ships to make it work unless we can utilize technology to really miniaturize the shots and damage to a tiny scale.
a standard 40 point game, but both players must be blindfolded
I assume you’d have a ref to make sure stuff didn’t get broken? To me it doesn’t sound very fun.
a standard 40 point game, but all ships used MUST be the Batavian Bat.
I think it would be funnier to do it with the Banshee’s Cry, or Jolly Mon for swarm chaos. XD
a standard 40 point game, but the rules are combined with the NASCAR race day game (participants are also blindfolded)

KeymasterI’ve never expanded it beyond being an upgrade to the basic Catan game, but you could in theory make a megagame out of it, with your Catan cities producing ships which you then use to play Pirates CSG.
I assume you saw Woelf‘s version on the page? His alternate ruleset is one I’ve wanted to try for a while, but I want to learn how to play Catan first.
Ben
KeymasterAny other variants on how to play the game that people have done?
That’s why this thread and the associated page linked above exists – I may still sticky it so it’s more visible. I merged your topic into this one so there won’t be tons of different threads about the same topic over time.
The Game Ideas page has enough content to keep you busy for many years. I’ve done a bunch of them, but there are more rulesets and scenarios I’d like to play than I have already played, and I’m the most experienced Pirates player (that we know of haha).
Since you like the general cumulative game rules, I’d suggest the Campaign Game rulesets. Economy Edition is a classic and looks to be the basis for many games going forward, including both the current CG4 and THC. If you don’t have time, simply varying the build total and player/fleet count is fun. 3-4 players at 60-100 points can be really great. Also don’t be afraid to go tiny. Control multiple fleets of only 10-25 points for some wackiness, especially when combined with Water World or other stuff.
If you do come up with your own variant(s), feel free to share them here so I can add them to the list!

KeymasterI hadn’t heard about the MT crisis until like last week. It’s sad to hear :/ There’s definitely plenty of Pirates fans out there but as you said the MT scare seems to have scattered people.
Yeah, I’ve directed people from there to here with a sticky thread at MT along with updates on just about all the Pirates sites I know of, but between the ubiquity of facebook and MT still up, the migration is somewhat slow and random. KeymasterHas anyone actually played a game with the contents of a single pack?
I can’t remember exactly how my first “games” went down back in 2005, but it’s possible that I played out of just one pack because that’s what the Start Here rules suggest. However, my first purchase was 2 packs of SM, so it’s likely I learned with both of them.
I agree that it’s a cool feature of the game/distribution, but if the game was relaunched I would probably want at least 4 ships per pack to have a much better chance of balancing point costs/factions/etc. Or a starter pack/box with either 8 or 10 ships total.
Thanks for starting a new thread topic too. The forum could use more topics started by someone other than me. XD

KeymasterFrance always seemed like the best all-around nation to me and in any strategy game like this I like to go for versatility.
The Pirates are the best, but you can make a solid case for the French in 2nd place. I like their versatility as well, in addition to their underrated named crew selection (for example: 2 sac captains; England and Spain combined have 0) and their aesthetic appeal.
Side note but I have never ever built a 40 point Cursed fleet that seemed good, and I have plenty of Cursed ships/crew
They are easily the worst faction of the Big 6, and best used in more casual games at higher build totals (80+, etc). To make them remotely competitive at 40 points you have to limit yourself to a tiny handful of game pieces: Grinder, Skwaluck (wrong spelling) from RtSS, and sac captain Fantasma from OE.
Ben
KeymasterHow do you feel about the number of packs floating around? Mass produced sets like OE are still easy to find, but obviously the supply of even those is not infinite.
It feels like a very long and very slow decline into reasonable pack scarcity. With people still getting into the game or coming back to it, it seems that packs are still being opened at a decent rate. However, the quantity of online retailers show that it will be many years before serious scarcity sets in. Perhaps in the long-term future every single set will average more than the original MSRP of $3.99 per pack.
Thanks for asking; how do you feel about it?
Ben
Keymasternot really sure if they should be called “pocket models”. Sounds like a good way to break a mast!
Indeed! I like that idea more for action figures or something that is all one piece, that doesn’t get disassembled. The cards would fit nicely in a pocket, but I wouldn’t want to risk ships in there….

KeymasterI think they are pretty sturdy for what they are. Plus this is probably the most economical option.
Agreed. In the Podcast with James Ernest, he talked about how expensive it was to make the ships, which corroborates what people reported in the past with the “styrene format being cost-prohibitive to produce”.
Ben

Keymaster@Jack: Yay for the French! 🙂 They are really good. It seems like a lot of people in the current Pirates CSG community have some disdain for the French, so even though the English are my favorite I find myself sticking up for the underrated French more than I should have to.
The Miniature Reviews section at MT has been somewhat dormant for some years now. I reinvigorated it a little with the Miniature Review Contest, but then I ran one of those where nobody submitted an entry by the deadline. 🙁
