just thought of something potentially viable for this, combine it with a home island raider, or some other ability that would let you dock at an enemy home island.
Indeed. I believe I thought of that when making the ship, which is part of the reason I didn’t want to go too low on the cost despite the low speed and cargo.
Might as well put some…[Read more]

Indeed, the thinner cardstock seems like it would be flimsy and unable to fit together tight enough for ships to stay constructed.
I wonder what materials Ben has tried myself. I wonder if the durable plastic from something like a sterilite tote with graphics glues on or a decal might take a bit more abuse then styrene.
I was asking the question…[Read more]

Is cardstock sturdy enough?
Imagine new “expansions” of the game instead of packs you buy but a picture pack you download and print out. A bit of DIY to build them, and play.
Indeed, Woelf and others have discussed things like that in the past, especially with stickers.
The older ships could be the collectible part of the game with perhaps som…

Would the main boarding ability be in addition to any other possible boarding win options? Would the SoI be able to use that ability and then either take or eliminate a treasure and eliminate another crew?
No, it would be instead of, similar to how the Massacre ability works.
I’m not sue how often that second ability will come into play, since I d…

Ben started the topic Rules for Thought #24 – Boarding Party Results in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 5 months ago
Now that the Rules survey has some results (37 responses as of this post), I think it would be a good idea to discuss some various options in detail.
Who should choose what happens after a boarding party?
Winner always chooses which category of consequence: crew, gold, or a mast. Loser chooses which of these if this is a standard boarding action.…

Sounds quite unique. Nemo’s Plans makes that Nautilus very OP, so I’d be inclined to simply avoid her.

The reenactment went great! I managed to get a good bu […]

For a variety of reasons I may not be posting to this thread every day going forward. Part of the reason I started the “Hcustom of the day” series is so Xerecs and I would have enough historically accurate options for The Caribbean Game. That game has been completely inactive so there is little incentive to create more historical customs that may…[Read more]

Ben started the topic Thoughts on the rarity ratio? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 5 months ago
In the recent podcast with Mike Selinker, he revealed that the original rarity distribution was 8:5:3. (for Common:Uncommon:Rare)
Although he said it probably changed over time, it seems consistent with the luck I’ve had opening packs. It’s one of the things I like about Pirates actually – the rares aren’t as rare as they are in other co…[Read more]

Ben replied to the topic Rules for Thought #21 – Turn order based on Points used in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 5 months ago
It may not really work with this game, but I do like the idea of a variable turn order system.
I do like how it could make things less predictable, but I think it could give rise to some OP situations. I’m thinking of a player going last on one round, then first in the next round to essentially have a double turn. Imagine that with Saccing – 4 c…[Read more]

Ben replied to the topic Charlemagne vs Gaule in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 5 months ago
Ben, what would you use the S boarding ability for? I’m not sure what the utility for it is, or if it’s important enough to warrant getting Le Gaule. Can it be used in conjunction to a normal board, so you can effectively board twice?
Yes indeed. Check out the Pirate Code entry on page 18. You can board twice in a turn. Also: “-This ability…[Read more]

Ben replied to the topic Rules for Thought #23 – More precise movement? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 5 months ago
Indirectly, it would also limit the potential scope of the game because you’d be limited to the size of the sheet or board the grid was printed on. Playing across a huge table or even the floor would be difficult if not impossible without making your own custom grid.
Yet another reason I could never support a hex system for Pirates! 😀

To be fair, L’Aube is definitely worse than the other two. Lower max speed, worse cannons overall (basically 3L’s), and quite boring/nothing distinctive. I don’t think Barbinais is any more effective on the Aube than on the other two, other than maybe the L range guns.
I also don’t think it really has a more useful ability. Sure it’s te…[Read more]
