I’m bringing it back:
If you had to eliminate one game piece from Pirates history, what would it be? Feel free to make different choices for gameplay factor and “stupidity factor”. 🙂
August 24, 2020 at 8:40 AM #11884GigiParticipantStill pretty new to the Pirates history; low hanging fruit, Darkhawk II. Great ship, but not for the British!
Haven’t got into the wacky pieces quite yet, but I am looking forward to it.

For “stupidity reasons,” Marques Miguel Antonio. The definition of useless, and I own three copies of him.
August 24, 2020 at 4:13 PM #11889LukasParticipanti would change most events
and balance some point costs of them and make some op stuff more expensiv and some useless stuff cheaper
hard to pic 1 piece

During playtesting it sent you to the nearest island you’d previously explored instead of the nearest unexplored island. That made far more sense thematically, and more importantly didn’t break anything… but somehow it got changed before going into production.
August 25, 2020 at 3:07 PM #11905BartekParticipantBanshe’s cry
this ship is so OP (and my first fleet before the Cursed were Pirates).
August 25, 2020 at 4:14 PM #11906JackParticipantFunny that Hidden Cove might be literally a typo. Only reason I can imagine for the effect changing in production.
I have a soft spot for Banshee’s Cry because I remember going to my local game store around the time DJC came out and specifically asking the teller if he had any Barbary Coast packs left, because I wanted a historical set and not a fantasy based one. He said something to the tune of “that’s awesome, don’t see people preferring historical games that often,” grabbed some BC packs, and threw in the two display ships they had from POTR. The Pride… And BC. So imagine my shock when I looked up BC’s stats after I got home…
I’d also consider eliminating Missionary, because EVERY TIME I put it in a game it only ever hurts me.
August 25, 2020 at 6:46 PM #11907Ochobrazo2298ParticipantI Have pretty much no Idea what Padre Francisco, Sensei Xu, Cameron the Cabin Boy and all other crew with that ability. I’m thinking that it would work with the SAC Ability maybe?
August 25, 2020 at 8:24 PM #11908JackParticipantDecent with SAC. It can be a versatility play. Say you’re unsure whether to put a firepot specialist or cannoneer in your fleet, a recruiter will let you wait until the moment’s right to decide. Pirates have the best options imo. You can bring in Fidel Zuan if you see Spanish ships, or Lian/Park to protect your own crew. Genny’s Red Rampage for boarding, Skyme the Monkey to steal something. Whatever comes up during the game. Not super useful but I play them a fair bit.
August 26, 2020 at 10:08 AM #11912WoelfModeratorA sneaky/fun use for a recruiter is to bring in a Shipwright that matches the nation of a ship you just captured, so you can start using it right away instead of dragging it all the way back home.
Lian & Park aren’t going to be at the top of any list of things to get rid of, but they definitely deserve a place on that list for being broken on the bad/unplayable end of the spectrum. If the opposing player got to choose who to eliminate when they won boarding or when they hit you with a crew-killer those two could be valuable, but as written, and using the standard rules, you can just throw in an extra Oarsman or some other 1-point crew to serve the exact same purpose. They only really matter against the one or two UTs that target specific crew, but even if you intentionally added one of those UTs to the pool yourself, that’s still no reason to ever bring them along when there are so many better crew options available for the same price.
The weird thing with Hidden Cove is that it wasn’t just a typo. The wording was different enough that someone had to intentionally change it. But why? Who knows?
August 27, 2020 at 12:46 PM #11917RandyModeratorWoelf I love that!!! Very clever use of the recruiter hahaha. Can’t wait to drop that one on my group haha.

August 27, 2020 at 1:36 PM #11924RandyModeratorHidden Cove is definitely at the top of most lists! I think I have more pieces that I just don’t understand the existence of (like OE Empress) than ones that are too OP. I usually feel like it is just my fault that I don’t play the OP pieces out of principle haha! We do have a group rule that new players get the BC, but once they win a game, she is off limits!!! haha

@Jack: I like the way you play… I think you experiment with the “bad” stuff (recruiters/Marines/etc) more than I have! I think it’s partly because I like using extra generic crew or equipment over some of the less-useful named crew. Something about spending 3+ points on a named crew that may not affect the game whatsoever… I’d rather just put a bunch of oarsmen on my ships for protection and a little movement insurance. Though it’s been a while since I played regular games consistently.

@Randy: Be careful if you match up against Xerecs! 🙂

That is a neat idea! It also gives them an idea of what top-tier stuff can do. Sometimes people in the community talk about fleets they’ve used to win consistently, but it’s nowhere near the level of UPS competition/etc. Though I was totally guilty of that in 2011/2012 lol. XD (took me a while to go through the fleets at MT and finally stumble upon darrin’s UPS stuff haha)
I hate mermaids a lot more than Hidden Cove. Becalmed is also extremely OP especially for the player going first. (essentially – go first, twice!!)
