    Climactic Resonance
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
    Rarity: R
    Point Value: 20
    Number of Masts: 6
    Cargo Space: 5
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 2S-3L-4L-4L-3L-2S
Ability: Mercenary. Junk. When this ship sinks another ship, you may repair one of this ship’s masts. When this ship is docked at a friendly fort, you may eliminate one treasure. It becomes a 3S cannon that can be eliminated only when the ship sinks.

Flavor text: This vessel’s crew are constantly preparing for the apocalypse as foretold by The Cursed. Stocking up on ammunition, they have become expert “sea survival specialists” and use materials from both ships and settlements to help prepare themselves for the inevitable onslaught of evil and doom.

Flavor text: A “fiery devil” of a vessel, the Topaz Dragon is a fast and fierce foe. When traveling in a straight line, she often catches targets off guard with her blazing speed, not slowing down to slam hard into the enemy ship. I like the Topaz, seems like an interesting hybrid option for the Mercs. He speed and ability would help he hunt down the smaller one and two mast gold runners, and the mercs have plenty of fun crew to use in boarding situations.

    Link: The Hermit

Flavor text: Crewed by an intimidating mix of tribal natives, haggard pirates, and “primal cavemen”, this deadly vessel pillages the seas for hedonistic pleasures. She is led by a “wise hermit” who helms the ship almost naked. Rumors abound that the ship houses young dames from the Far East, but in reality it is a mixture of ammunition, corpses, rum, and wild animals. The ship is noisy, blood is spilt, and the chaos goes on.

Interesting ship, turning what the Cursed have been historically decent at (boarding) into a potential drawback. Given that boarding ability, I’d try to not board as often as possible with the PC, which could be difficult, given that the Cursed have a limited amount of true capital ships at their disposal. In a campaign, I imagine this would be pat of a larger battle group, with support ships all around.

In a smaller game, I think she’d do well as a lightly armed flagship for a more guns oriented fleet.

Something I just thought of to bypass the boarding ability, a Doctor crew. The Pirates must have at least one, and the Cursed might have one given all the custom stuff we’ve made for them. Hmmm…. If that would work then this ship gets much more interesting, especially if you can bring along a recruiter crew along, then you’d WANT to board so you could use the ability chain to flip the recruiter back over with the doctor.

Wow, great point.  Thanks for coming up with that, because it’s the type of potential issue some of my customs might have that I wouldn’t normally notice until I’m already playing them.  That’s the kind of “power gamer” (got the phrase from James Ernest) thinking that is helpful to employ when thinking about custom abilities.

The Savior of the Antichrist is a Doctor crew, and they could get Amos aboard to recruit new people.  I see that as niche and expensive but kind of OP.  With The Hermit aboard providing the essential abilities, you’d have the Savior and Amos taking up 2 cargo spaces (in general), leaving 3 still available with plenty of point cap space.  I’m changing it to “remove from the game” to prevent intentional abuse.

    Grand Escape
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Jade Rebellion
    Rarity: R

    Number of Masts: 6
    Cargo Space: 4
    Base Move: S
    Cannons: 4S-4S-3S-3S-2L-2L
Ability: Junk. Crew with abilities that steal cargo do not take up cargo space on this ship. If this ship is within S of an enemy ship or enemy home island when this ship is given a move action, she gets +L to her base move, and +L+S when carrying cargo stolen from an enemy.

Flavor text: With a hyperactive crew intent on getting away with massive heists, the Grand Escape is ready to set sail at all times. She carries long wooden rods used to push off of enemy ships and docks, in addition to stern chasers that deter a hot pursuit.

    Base Move: T
    Cannons: 2L-5L-4L-4L-4L-3L-3L-3L-4L-4L
Ability: Junk. Treasure Ship. This ship must be towed (as if towing a derelict).
Link: All Cursed crew with point cost of 10+

Flavor text: Although she is too heavy and dilapidated to sail under her own power, the Devil’s Kingdom has become a sort of haven for Cursed brethren. Her huge cargo hold is almost always full of demons, fiends, criminals, valuables, and corpses. Despite this, she always seems to have room for more. I really like the Talindurum, cool pairing of abilities.

Raidamos is good as well, I love seeing the Eternal ability. 😀 I’m not positive, but I think he’s made an appearance in SS.

Batreans is interesting. There isn’t a bombardier like he, even among customs. I’d love to see her used in a game, big or small.

Flavor text: Spetner was a merchant in Florida before being pressed into service by the U.S. Navy. He quickly grew to enjoy it more than his past occupations, and has been promoted to captain of the USS Chesapeake Bay. I really like this combo of the CB and Spetner. He’ll link to the ship, and therefore not take up cargo space, leaving the Bay with 5 open spots, 4 after adding a helmsman. If you decide to include an explorer, her hold is reduced somewhat, but still effective as a hybrid like ship.

Flavor text: The Duchesse is the latest French capital ship ready for war. She continues the tradition of heavily armed French warships that look even better than they perform. With a grand launching, the French sail her out with high hopes.

This might need to go to 20, seeing as how a world hater could make 5’s trigger the ability as well, which would end up being a decent percentage of the total hits.

I always assumed that the “2 masts on roll of a 6” ability (and others like it, ex. “double range of cannons but must hit on 6”) only hit on a natural roll of a 6. So regardless of modifiers added. Is this specified in the Code?

You could check; the Code is on the homepage of my site here.  Don’t mean to be harsh but I’m tired of looking things up for people that are VERY easy to find/search.  (though if you’re on a phone let me know if you can’t get files from the site up since mobile can get funky)

Page 43 has the info, saying that modifiers still work.  The “natural 6” was a mistake and I’ve seen some in the community in the past fighting for it to be the case, but that’s not how it’s supposed to work.

-The text for some ships with this ability refers to a “natural six”. The word “natural” should be ignored; this ability is treated the same for all ships that have it, and the roll can be modified.

Thanks for checking out my customs!

I was busy yesterday and didn’t really look at the Duchesse, but looking now I really like that ship. Ability aside, he base speed and good cannons already make he a ‘speedy’ gunship, and as has been said time and again, speed mattes.

What I find most interesting is the link. Any and all named captains can link to this ship. That’s quite a lot of interesting combinations. The several S-Board captains, Arazure and Arathiel the SAC captains, Lady roimata with captain+SAT; and then there’s the Custom French captains. I know I’ve given them at least one EA Captain, Cazador gave them a captain+explore combo, and the list goes on.

As for the main ability itself, and concerns over point cost, I suggest a middle ground for now of 19 points. If you feel that’s still too low then 20 or 20+ it is.

You sounded pretty sure of yourself so I figured I would just ask if you were confident of that rule. I wasn’t looking for a specific reference to the code (you’re right, I could have looked that up myself). I should have been more clear!

That certainly opens up some more ship/fleet combos. I’ll have to build a fleet with that in mind the next time I play.

Welcome aboard!  Feel free to introduce yourself with your Pirates backstory.

There aren’t official formulas on making custom ships and crew.  I actually think that would make it more boring.  I’m not sure how familiar you are with the game pieces that Wizkids released, but the Master Spreadsheet has all of them.  Of course, sometimes they made things too expensive or too cheap.

To me it’s more of an art than a science, but perhaps I just see it that way because I want to.  🙂

Thank you for the reply I will just be sure to test them out before I go to far with them.

Feel free to post some here for feedback – it could be useful for you going forward.  A brief period of “harsh feedback” can be good to completely course-correct and overhaul things before an entire set of OP stuff is designed.

Ive also been wondering what everyone uses for their custom ships

Xerecs is one of the only custom creators that makes physical versions.  I’ve created so many customs (likely 1600+) that it will take many years of campaign games to get them all in play, much less try to make physical copies of them.  I use the VASSAL module.

I’ve experimented with cardboard and very thin balsa wood. I’ve managed to put together a regular 4 mast with each material, but using duplicate ships is the best way to go I’m afraid. The cardboard and wood will hold together, but its not as structurally sound as the plastic.

I’d show pictures, but I’m not sure how to post pictures here yet.

When using the Visual post editor, you should see a picture button on the far right that requires the url source.  For the sake of forum speed and potential quoting/unresolved site issues (sorry, hope to resolve sometime!), I’d prefer if people didn’t post a ton of pictures within their posts.  But you can also link to the picture as you would a regular link that should open in a new tab, same for albums.
