-A crewmember assigned to a sea monster using this unique treasure ignores all cargo space requirements.
I’m taking this to mean that a Sea Monster with a cargo of 0 would be able to have a crew assigned to it, as long as it was through the UT, is this correct? What happens when the Sea Monster in question HAS cargo, does the crew assigned by t…

The searchable reference database will be by far the biggest loss, at least as far as non-personal items are concerned. Is that something that could eventually be recreated here, or on an attached website? Obviously it would take a ridiculous amount of work to set back up, so it wouldn’t be anything happening any time soon.
In my opinion,…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Custom Ships (post your custom game pieces here!) in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 2 months ago
@woelf: Perhaps I could give the Mirage an ability similar to that of Dr. Faust from Fiends of the Blood Islands? His ability reads: “Once at the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a result of 6, instead of giving this ship an action, you may give an enemy ship an action.”
Would this make the Mirage a little less broken?Sure, that wou…[Read more]

Chariot of the Gods, from the code:
If there are no sea monsters in play when this unique treasure is revealed, it remains aboard the ship that found it and has no other effect.
This has come up in CoEC, the Chariot has been found, but there are no Sea Monsters in play when it was found. What would happen if a Sea Monster came into play? Would the…

18. Emerald Mirage
Ability: Mercenary. Once per turn give this ship a move action, but do not move her. Instead, eliminate a mast from this ship. You may give an enemy ship an action.I agree with Ben that this is too automatic. It’s similar to the effect of Davy Jones, but he costs almost as much as this entire ship on his own, and still only…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Rules for Thought #34 – Repairing by d6 roll, Creatures repair by eating crew? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 2 months ago
I actually like the idea of making it automatic with shipwrights since they’re not worth using very often. Letting ships with shipwrights repair 2 masts in one action while docked at home or a fort could at least make someone consider using one instead of a cannoneer perhaps.
The part I don’t like about making it automatic at your home island i…[Read more]

It’s too bad that the “cancelled user” names get replaced with the admin’s, so it’s impossible to know for sure who posted what unless they’d left a signature of some sort or were quoted by someone else.
It’s somewhat understandable why it’s done that way, and is definitely better than just wiping those posts out entirely, but still, there…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic What do you miss most about the game being out of print? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 2 months ago
Consulting with the designers before new sets went to the printers. Even though they didn’t use all of my suggestions and ideas, it was really neat being directly involved in the design to help shape the way things came out. Quite a few problematic things got knocked down or fixed before they could become a problem.
I barely ever got into the…[Read more]

A bonus of some sort would make repair actions more efficient, but I agree that the bonuses should really only apply at your home island, and they should be limited in scope. Rolling a d6 and getting back that many masts would be way too much too quickly.
Rolling a 5-6 to get one extra mast when docked at home would be simple enough to add, and…[Read more]

Not sure why it wasn’t displayed for Ben and Woelf. It appeared plastered on every page of MT I tried prior to posting here.
Just another annoying hiccup for MT I suppose
Just a matter of timing, probably. TCO has always been the parent site, so it makes sense they’d post it there first and then add it to MT a short time later.

Towing probably should be specifically mentioned in the keyword, but it is covered under the heavily-implied “ghostly ships can’t touch anything” blanket rule. It would be so much simpler if the rule could just say that, but rules like that always seem to run into problems when you get into the countless nuances and interactions with other abilities.

If you have Filching Gold but also want to board a ship to steal an additional coin, which happens first? (I assumed the Filching Gold; perhaps the owner of the ship can decide?)
Filching applies when the ships first touch, so you use it before boarding.
If you lost the boarding, you could potentially return the coin that you’d just stolen…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Rules for Thought #32: "Versus" series of official scenarios in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 3 months ago
The few and far between “official scenarios” never seemed to amount to much. Whatever story setup they included was often interesting, but didn’t really affect gameplay at out, outside of requiring players to use one or two specific game pieces in their fleets. Beyond that, players would still tend to go with whatever they normally used for…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Why did you like or dislike the Caribbean set? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 3 months ago
Liked:
-The collaboration made a ton of sense. Pirates + Pirates couldn’t have been more obvious. It shouldn’t have taken nearly as long as it did.
-It was great seeing so many characters, even minor ones, appear on crew cards. (*See Dislikes)
-It increased exposure for the game quite a bit, and certainly drew in some players that hadn’t been…[Read more] -
Woelf replied to the topic Rules for Thought #31 – Doubling the gold and islands for standard games? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 3 months ago
I’ve done plenty of games where at least one island is surrounded by terrain, sometimes including reefs. Off the top of my head I can think of at least two past battle reports that will be republished where I did something like that. (hopefully I will get them up here at PwB this year)
Many years ago I’d made scans of a couple terrain pieces a…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Rules for Thought #31 – Doubling the gold and islands for standard games? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 3 months ago
You’ve heard this before numerous times, but I’ve never been a fan of having a fixed/known quantity for the gold that gets set out at the start of the game.
It’s much more enjoyable for me to grab a few treasure cards and punch out coins at random, without looking at values, then distribute them between island roughly equally – or with extra…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Why did they change the explorer artwork to the musketeer artwork? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 3 months ago
I don’t think that change was intentional, it was just something that got messed up along the line and wasn’t fixed properly.
It was nice how most of the minor nation got unique artwork for their generic crew, and then it was especially neat in the later sets how the rest of the nations got their own artwork, even though it did make sorting…[Read more]

Woelf replied to the topic Rules for Thought #30 – Raking/historical shooting house rules in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 3 months ago
Raking, “crossing the T”, and all sorts of other maneuvering tactics that were effective in real life (or at least look cool in movies) don’t work very well in the game as it is because of the turn-based nature, and more significantly because of Captains.
When two ships are already close enough to shoot each other, moving your ship into a…[Read more]

Can a player choose the order with a Switchblade ram when there’s a blade ram and a regular ram? (or must blades come first)
Thematically it would make sense for the blades to apply first and in the order contact occurs, but the rules don’t mandate that, so you can do them in any order.
Can you explore two friendly ships at once with one explore a…
