KeymasterJust implemented a captcha on the registration page. Hopefully it will stop the spam accounts.
Made a question thread at the bbpress support forum inquiring about the link problem. No idea why people other than me have trouble posting links (posting as a bare URL rather than linked text may help), the site seems glitchy for no good reason sometimes. I’m not very good with the technical stuff but I will certainly keep trying to fix it.
Super glad the forum is active; thank you for your postings and patience!
Ben
Keymasterkevin2377 has a bunch of pack lots up, plus a few 3 pound boxes.
Ben
KeymasterBunch of auctions ending soon!
Now seeing some interesting singles up as well. Kind of an individual ship bonanza. XD
Edit: Seeing some decent lots up as well. Lately I’ve been noticing multiple lots that look borderline on whether or not they’re worth taking. For someone beginning to collect I think some of them are fair.
Ben
KeymasterSorry if you have trouble posting links. No idea what the problem with that is but I’ll be looking into it. Apologies for the leaky vessel….
Ben
KeymasterIf that’s the intent, and it can use them from outside the game, it’s horribly underpriced at only 8 gold.
That is the intent. I guess I didn’t think of all the crazy possibilities with the shot types. You could freeze an opponent, set them on fire, and cancel all their crew all at once, and that’s not all the shot types. Cost is jumping up to 25 gold, and here is the new ability text I’ll try:
This fort may use all equipment with “shot” in the name up to once per turn per shot type (the equipment does not have to be in play). You may assign different shot types to different cannons each turn. Equipment rolls of 1 must have their negatives applied if possible.
Marcus Augustine opens up some crazy possibilities, and I love his flavor text. 🙂
Once per turn, roll a d6. On a result of an even number this ship’s cannons have long range for this turn.
I think changing this to a 4-6 success would make it easier to understand and simultaneously more in line with ALL similar abilities already in the game. I think it’s best to keep things simple and make high rolls good. The even/odd distinction seems unnecessary and harder to think about.
With the high costs I think that English combo is fine.
A true “Greek Fire” could even end up as a short-lived terrain hazard, so I will have to consider that.
That sounds fun, chaotic, wild, and fun to try and represent. XD Bombardier pieces would work great for taking pictures of games with Dromons.
Yes, I’ve been saying Reverse Captain should be 2 points for years. I just don’t use the ability very much, so I don’t care if it’s a generic crew or not. XD Definitely would make Cursed fog hopping fleets more playable.
Finally getting back to my SE/LE section, though most have been released.
Defender of Antielys (pronounced “an-tee-lis”)
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Barbary Corsair
Rarity: SE
Point Value: 18
Number of Masts: 4
Cargo Space: 6
Base Move: S+S
Cannons: 5L-5L-5L-5L
Ability: Galley. Sniping. [You may double the range of this ship’s cannons each turn, but you must roll a 6 to hit.] This ship ignores the Parley ability.Flavor text: After being deceived by confusing voodoo rituals, the crew of this ship went mad. They claim to defend an ancient city named “Antielys”, which doesn’t exist on any map. Corsair leaders are happy to direct the ship’s large cargo hold to treasure gathering efforts, but the crew still jump at any chance to fire the ship’s long guns at “enemy” vessels.
LOL! There may someday be more to that story.
Joven Victor
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: French
Rarity: LE
Point Value: 5
Ability: Captain. Secret Hold.
Link: Fureur CeltiqueFlavor text: This former mercenary has accepted citizenship in France in exchange for a massive salary for his services. Assigned to one of the old 10 masted behemoth ships, he has already begun paying off for the French.
He would look somewhat similar to this. He is the new linked captain to one of my oldest customs, as the French captured the Celtic Fury sometime around 2011. 😛

KeymasterThe darker and more vivid colors on everything else looks so much better. Crazy collectoring aside, there’s little to no reason to seek out the lighter cards.
I agree completely. Someone recently at the Facebook group prefers the faded cards and said they love anything with a matte finish.
I’m pretty much all about using a collection, so as long as I have one copy of each item from Spanish Main (punched/unpunched/from any printing), I’m happy. XD
At this point I think I will have to make a gold Coleoptera.
Ben
KeymasterJust messaged NECA, Wizkids, and Justin Ziran (President of Wizkids Games) on Facebook about the recent podcasts with 4 of the people who worked on the game. Also asked if the styrene format is still too cost prohibitive to produce.
Ben
KeymasterAdditionally, I’m reasonably OK with a minor faction(outside of mercenaries), or a one-off faction getting slight discounts on ships and crew, since they won’t have any other ships and crew to choose from down the line (probably, assuming that no other customs are made for them); or will have a limited selection of ships and crew compared to established factions, WK or otherwise.
I think that’s part of the problem with discounts though; I understand people can make sets in a “vacuum” where other custom creators aren’t taken into account, but I’d prefer to mix and match and have everything be as compatible as possible. I think custom creators pretty much need to be open to upping point costs… it’s not a contest to see who can win the most custom games or make the most OP stuff. If someone makes really good customs and uses them in a game, their opponents simply won’t want to play with them, or they’ll just make their own stuff that is even more OP.
But I do think that it might need a limit, and not just be able to use whatever equipment shot you want on a whim.
It’s rough around the edges right now. Each type of shot can only be used once per turn (not exploding shot on all 8 cannons), and I want the backfires to have the negatives. I’ll make that more clear by saying that they can eliminate cannons from the fort (like they would a mast on a ship) but the “equipment” stays there because there is none to eliminate as it is part of the fort ability.
I get that EA and Captain are a very powerful combo
Which means it should be expensive. Victor de Alva arguably breaks the game a bit on the San Cristobal. Add Ex-Patriot and these crew go crazy on almost whatever ship they want. There’s a good case to be made that Ex-Pat/Captain/EA should just not happen, so they NEED to be at a premium.
No such thing as too long of a post! 🙂
Apparition
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: C
Point Value: 14
Number of Masts: 2
Cargo Space: 3
Base Move: S+S
Cannons: 3L-2S
Ability: Ghost Ship. Eternal. Fog Hopper. [If this ship ends her turn in a fog bank, on her next turn she may use her move action to move out of any other fog bank in play.]Flavor text: Like a ghost in the night, the Apparition only shows herself when she will not be seen by many. Her evasiveness has become legend.
It’s too tempting to make “perfect” fog hoppers after some of the originals are kind of disappointing. 🙂
Skull Reaper (not my artwork, and I realize the gun is not accurate to the time period!)

Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Cursed
Rarity: U
Point Value: 2
Ability: If this ship wins a boarding party, she may capture one crew of your choice instead of eliminating it. Any captured crew are assigned to this ship, don’t take up cargo space, don’t count against the point limit of the ship, and cannot use their abilities. Once per turn you may eliminate a crew captured in this way to give this ship an extra action.Flavor text: The Skull Reaper used to simply hoard skulls. Now he has found a way to use them to benefit his ship.
A twist on the Sac ability. Love this crew and might do more with the flavor text of course.

KeymasterA friend of DiggerDaviez posted a video on youtube recently, nice to see another person making video content for the game besides just Xerecs and I.
Ben
KeymasterNew auctions up from this seller. Fun to see my site get mentioned in the description, wow! 🙂 CC lot looks interesting with some LE’s and plenty of quantity.
Ben
Keymaster@JW Darkhurst: Doomsday is intense, and she reminds me a lot of my version of HMS Victory. Though it seems more powerful for less points. XD I think it’s best when the faction affiliation is soon after the miniature name, but of course that’s personal preference.
I’m not in favor of making game pieces illegal to use on purpose, so I think this one just needs a recosting. I know that might be a crude way to “fix” things that are OP, but I think it’s best when the creator doesn’t want to change anything else about the game piece (which I certainly have experience with lol!). In this case you could double the cost to 60! 😀 I suppose that’s pushing it, but I suggest at least 40 as a starting point for playtesting. The perfect link with Reese just puts it way over the top.
@El Cazador: I think some of those larger ships could go up in cost by 1-2 points, but I suppose a lot of them are modeled after Wizkids stuff… I may have an inherent bias where I’d rather see OP things go up in price than underpowered stuff go down in price (for balancing purposes). The opposite might make more sense, but not in terms of crew usefulness….
Made this one today! It was going to be a ship, but I decided to make it a fort since I already have so many synonymous ship names (Devil’s Frenzy, Primal Chaos, Blitz, Mayhem, Stormrage, etc etc.)
It was also going to be Cursed, but they’ve already received 14 forts in the set. So it’s not Cursed. XDPandemonium
Type: Fort
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: U
Gold Cost: 8
Cannons: 3L-3L-3L-3L-3L-3L-3S-3S
Ability: This fort may use any equipment with “shot” in the name up to once per turn each (the equipment does not have to be in play).Flavor text: This wild repository of international sailors and soldiers has grown into a place of overpopulation and mayhem. Due to their lack of allegiance, the owners of the fort are accustomed to gathering huge supplies of excess ammunition from passing ships. The Cursed are looking to capture the fortress and use its arsenal in their unholy crusade, but it might become easier if Tyrus Lancaster gets involved….
Ideally this would be used with the rules for flaming forts I came up with during my Experimental cumulative game. Obviously it would be a trainwreck with grapple boarding, smokepots, etc. But perhaps that’s the point now? I’ve finally started to run out of ideas, so I suppose crazy becomes the norm…. XD
These were made a while back.
Flint
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: R
Point Value: 11
Number of Masts: 2
Cargo Space: 2
Base Move: S+S
Cannons: 3S-3S
Ability: Mercenary. Submarine. Each time this ship hits an enemy ship, replace masts with fire masts instead of eliminating them (this ability cannot be copied).Flavor text: The Flint’s crew are obsessed with starting fires wherever they can. They are trying to find a way to light enemy ships aflame when ramming their submarine into ships while still submerged.
Bynothas
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: U
Point Value: 13
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Captain. EA. [Extra Action: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5-6, this ship may be given an extra action.] Fear.Flavor text: Bynothas has been a mercenary since the age of 12 when he was conscripted into service in an unknown navy. Now 48, he has become one of the most well-respected military minds in the world. After a decade spent as a general, he is now being hired to help fight the upcoming wars of, and for, mankind.
You know this set is epic when he’s not even rare. XD I know 11 points works, but Captain+EA in one cargo space for all factions needs a decent premium in my opinion.

KeymasterIt would make me crazy (ok, crazier) to have to try to collect one whole set of the “lighter cards” of its first run, then another of the slightly darker ones which came after (not referring to UL).
Yeah, some of the collectors out there have certainly done that, but I just want at least one of everything. 3 sets in 1 is not worth it to me.
@Ben: DO IT! Bling the heck out of a Locker and take her out on the prowl! I miss customizing, you’re gonna pull me back into that, too…
I might do that. Fits with some recent game ideas I’ve been having too… just no idea if I can pull it off this year. (unlikely)
The sheer quantity of custom game pieces created since your last long stay at MT is staggering – definitely more than 2000, and possibly over 3,000 (mostly by myself, Xerecs, El Cazador, and JW Darkhurst). O_O The Custom Ships thread has picked off where the second one left off at MT (both MT threads had many hundreds or thousands of replies), and you can find my ~1600+ customs here.

KeymasterI didn’t think of it until now, but I just realized I could use a spare Locker to make a gold Coleoptera using the gold paint I used for my gold island and the gold ship from Command the Oceans.

Also from MI, why is the German print iteration of 028 Prussian Crown (“Preussische Krone”) considered unusual, as noted on the spreadsheet for that set?
The only thing I can think of is if the other ship names from the German edition of that set are printed in English (which I assume is not the case).
I wanted to make the Master Spreadsheet comprehensive, so Holofernes’ Jolly Rodger was used for notes and trivia.
Ben
KeymasterI’m sure old_man could come up with a nice list. 😀
For example, the MI 029 Coleoptera/Nautilus error. Is there a picture of concept art for the proper “gold” Coleoptera, online somewhere that I missed?
It’s so bizarre. A while back at MT, someone had a compelling argument based (I think) on Jules Verne material that said the Coleoptera was supposed to look like the Nautilus because she was designed to be disguised as such. Perhaps that was an alternate or later version of the ship. The flavor doesn’t match of course. I don’t know who said that or if it’s true, and maybe they were just misleading people lol. (but it seemed for real based on their explanation) Almost like a double negative/reversed situation.
Didn’t find it; MT looked a bit different back then….
Ben
KeymasterTrawling around eBay and didn’t find too much else. (apart from auctions being bid on of course)

KeymasterI’m really glad a lot of the community and regulars are already registered here, because the spam has gotten bad the past day or two. Registration is closed again; I hope to try something new tomorrow or Sunday that may help, but I don’t want to leave the current registration open when I know I can’t be on the site.
Thanks for being here; I love seeing the community active!
Ben
KeymasterUnlike a7xfanben, I really want to see an independent Portugal faction as Portugal was an important naval player from the age of exploration until . . . I forget the date, but it was after or toward the end of the Spanish-Portuguese union under the Habsburg monarchs.
I’m not opposed to that at all, I’ve just combined Portuguese stuff with Spain so far because it’s easier and creating a new historical faction from scratch can be intimidating. Ideally my Age of Sail set will eventually have a full Portuguese faction… maybe in like 2078. XD
I think the Capitania should be more expensive, perhaps 18 points. Colonna could go to 7; Massacre deserves a discount from 7 but 3 might be too low.
Ben
KeymasterThat was a fun and informative interview. Well done!
Thank you for listening!!

KeymasterHuzzah it’s a party here! 5 people online at once! XD 😀

KeymasterMostly singles being bid on, including $30 for all 3 sets of native canoes!! O_O (also showing $7.50 shipping for me on that one) Interested to see what the Titan will go for.

Ben
KeymasterI have OE #049 HMS Clear Wind 1/2 and #077 L’Afrique 2/2
Looked last night and I actually don’t have either of these.
Ben
KeymasterGuess who has that Arabella to give you, Ben? ? PM me where to mail her, and she’s yours! A perk for all you do for this community…
Wow!! Thanks a ton!
Ben
KeymasterHere’s a topic I’ve been pondering for a while: what game pieces that you think should be easily obtainable have otherwise evaded your grasp? I’m definitely not talking about LE’s, promos, or anything from SCS here, but rather commons and uncommons that you’d find in a set like Ocean’s Edge or Spanish Main.
Great topic idea!
I’ve had a bunch over the years, but not many common/uncommons left. Looks like the Arabella (Pirate 4 master from CC) is the main one left. For a while it was Robert Surcouf to complete by C/U/R stuff from BC. I remember wanting HMS Sultan and the Metal Dragon for a long time, but now I’ve got both. Looks like I still don’t have USS Maryland either, but FN is not a common set.
I still haven’t opened a single Scavenger Pack box from SS, so until this year I didn’t have any of the MI’s/great turtles/trade currents from that set.
Ben
KeymasterBen
Keymasterat the very least it should look completely different so there’s no chance for confusion.
Indeed, you make great points, thanks for the feedback!
Cavalier
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: R
Point Value: 6
Number of Masts: 1
Cargo Space: 2
Base Move: S+L
Cannons: 2L
Ability: Mercenary. Galley. Crew Killing. [Once per turn when this ship hits an enemy ship, also eliminate one crew from that ship.]Flavor text: A small warrior vessel left over from the Knights of Malta, this galley is still able to help out in a tense firefight.
Jarrod Alcod
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: C
Point Value: 6
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Captain. Grappleshot Specialist. [Once per turn when this ship is given a shoot action, one of her cannons can shoot a grapple shot. Declare which cannon will shoot the grapple shot before rolling the d6. If it hits, do not eliminate a mast; instead this ship can initiate a boarding party against the target.] If this ship has the Hoist keyword, she gets +1 to her d6 rolls.Flavor text: This passionate fisherman not only uses his lines to occasionally board other ships, he even lends his expertise to ships that have “fishing lines” of their own!
Alcod’s Cove
Type: Fort
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: C
Gold Cost: 3 gold

KeymasterDue to our unfornutate geographical location we can’t get our hands on everything we want
Welcome back! (?) You’re in Germany right? I think I remember Kaiser being from there. If you’re over there, you could always hit up the old_man… 🙂
Now several millions in debt and living under the bridge, we have accustomed to our new vagabond lifestyle, taking only the bare necessities and our vast collection of ships with us as we get chased off by police day and night.
O_O Wow! XD
lists
Fleets? I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t do other games where that is the jargon… even in CCG’s I’d call them decks before “lists”. (no offense, just a pet peeve I have to deal with)
Ben
KeymasterI’m just worried that things could trend toward SCS levels of rarity and scarcity very quickly, with a certain faction getting pieces and all that, but not being distributed as much as the other factions in the set.
Good point; it might be tricky to ensure that things would be fair.
Single nation packs would kill the “game in every pack” marketing claim, but when was the last time *anyone* actually played the game against someone else using only the contents of a single pack?
I’ll have to do that soon then. XD Just kidding, I have way too many unopened packs to justify bothering. 😀
I agree about the starter packs. I like the game in every pack feature but it’s not quite optimal.
Ben
KeymasterDoes this only link to ships that are naturally Cursed, or does it also work on ships converted by Black Mark?
To me it makes sense that it would work on ships converted via Black Mark.
Then, in the artwork, the sails and/or deck can be shown to be on fire.
Disappointing but makes sense.
Ben
KeymasterI am assuming that it would be scuttled at the start of the turn after the two non fire masts were eliminated?
Great question. I suppose that would have to happen, though I might change the ability text so it doesn’t. As I’ve thought about before, if custom game pieces saw more widespread usage, I think we would have to collaborate on a “customs Pirate Code” to handle all the new rules questions. XD
those are some Epic flavor texts as well.
Thanks! That’s the idea – you should check out some of the 5, 6, and 10 master flavor texts (along with the linked crew) from the Epic Seas set. Gets really crazy and over the top. 😀
One of these days I will start adding some flavor text to my pieces (creative writing has never been my strong suit, but I would like to get better at it).
Same here. For me it was a matter of starting. Once I finally started doing a lot of flavor text for my fantasy customs, the whole set just flowed from there. I don’t do flavor text for my historical customs because I don’t see the need – their story has already been written many times! (could do a summary of their accomplishments, but it would just be similar to the Wikipedia blurb/etc)
Sokol is a good ship that reminds me of the Windjammer, one of my favorite Pirate 3 masters.
Orgullo Real seems like a solid ship. I think it’s confusing to call a custom keyword by two different names. Galleons have essentially been in the game since 2004 with Spanish Main (I usually think of 4 masted Spanish ships with 5+ cargo), so a keyword for that feels a little bit “late” to me. I love the Hidden Gold ability and think it fits the galleon idea well though. I just think calling it Hidden Gold would be less confusing, especially because “Galleon” makes me think of ship type keywords like Galley where the physical model is different from other ships of the same size, which might actually be the case here?
Historical Custom of the Day #429
Robert Drury
English
Crew
2 points
Ability: Explorer. If this crew would be eliminated or removed from the game, place it on the nearest island instead.Ocean Theft
Type: Ship
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: U
Point Value: 14
Number of Masts: 3
Cargo Space: 5
Base Move: L
Cannons: 4L-2S-4L
Ability: Mercenary. Hoard. Hidden Gold. [This ship has 2 extra cargo spaces that may only be assigned treasure.]Flavor text: This ship has a crew that have become experts in the art of robbery. They thoroughly enjoy deceiving their enemies, flying false flags and posing as merchants in order to close range on ships that would otherwise outrun them.
Master Gunner Swin Brigman
Type: Crew
Faction Affiliation: Mercenary
Rarity: C
Point Value: 7
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Cannoneer. This ship gets +2 to her equipment and specialist rolls.Flavor text: Swin Brigman learned the ways of naval gunnery from Ducie Chads and later a mysterious figure from France. His accumulated knowledge and professional demeanor allow him to be a huge asset to any captain looking to increase firepower and gun crew effectiveness.
