Does this only link to ships that are naturally Cursed, or does it also work on ships converted by Black Mark?

To me it makes sense that it would work on ships converted via Black Mark.

Then, in the artwork, the sails and/or deck can be shown to be on fire.

Disappointing but makes sense.

Interesting. In a non-campaign game this might be broken, since you could pump all of you points into a few fast ships, and then use this to crew them up as the game goes on.

I think a lot of standard games are too fast-moving and end too quickly for that to be a good strategy, but in a game with a lot of coins available, perhaps more relevant.
