December 10, 2019 at 4:02 AM #10534XerecsModeratorIf there was a “Pirates CSG League” would people be interested in participating? This is an idea I’ve had for a while now, games/matches would be played on the VASSAL module so pretty much everyone could participate if they wanted to.December 17, 2019 at 5:00 PM #10556RandyModerator
this sounds super cool but definitely got to start learning to play on vassal!
December 17, 2019 at 9:34 PM #10558XerecsModeratorLet me know if/when you’re free, we can have a game or two.
I’m envisioning the League as semi to very competitive, with a set amount of time for a “regular season” and then a “playoff” at the end.
December 18, 2019 at 7:53 PM #10566XerecsModeratorContinuing my idea for a Pirates League.
This would be a semi to very competitive league, with scheduled matches, a time frame for those matches to take place in, and a Playoff tournament.
All games would be held on the VASSAL module, and would be 60 point, two player games. All pieces made by Wiz Kids, INCLUDING return to Savage Shores AND unreleased pieces would be available to players. Yes that includes Events and the Banshee’s Cry.
To see these pieces, see the Pirates Master Spreadsheet. The unreleased pieces are all the way to the right.
I’m still trying to figure some things out for this, since I really want to get this going sometime in the next year. If anyone has any thoughts comments, let me know.December 19, 2019 at 2:34 PM #10567Jonathan BowenParticipantLol so no custom pieces? ?
How many players are you thinking of getting involved in this? There’s a limited amount of pieces to use, and it’s only a matter of time until we encounter duplicates/repeats.

No customs for the first season, probably the second as well. Later on if the league takes off Customs could slowly be phased in.
There has been a lot of discussion over on the Facebook Group about this.
December 27, 2019 at 7:32 PM #10576BenKeymasterI won’t be able to realistically participate but it sounds like a cool idea! Some of the unreleased stuff looks really good and/or fun. My biggest worry is that UPS fleets would dominate too much so the best fleets would look very similar.

I have similar worries, but the discussion on the FB group seems to think that the Banshee’s Cry is the most OP thing in the game. Of course it possibly is along with mermaids and I proposed a league wide draft; participants would be able to chose 10 ships they could build their 60 point fleet with for the duration of a league season. Once they chose a ship, no one else in the league would be able to use it in their fleet. So the BC and the Hai-Peng would only show up in one fleet.
That’s not my biggest worry though. In my head I’m thinking that is a pay to play league, similar to how the Ocean Terrain Contest was. Everyone’s entrance fee would contribute to the grand prize at the end of the season.

One could also make the argument that all game pieces with the CJS ability should be banned, arguably before the BC. Why only 10 ships to choose from?
December 28, 2019 at 3:37 PM #10584XerecsModeratorOnly 10 since I don’t think anyone will be able to fit more than 10 ships into a 60 point fleet, taking crew into consideration. I’m mostly thinking of this league like a sports league. You’ve got a roster of players (ships) on your team, but not all of them play every night or every game. Participants would have those 10 ships to make their league fleets from, and are under no obligation to use all of them in a fleet. Also, in case a fleet loses, there’s a way to tweak things.
I don’t really want to ban anything, mainly since WK never “officially”banned anything other than the Sleigh. You have a point about game pieces with that ability, and people who are calling for the ban on the BC have a point. Banning those things however will just lead to other things becoming OP, and then people start calling for THOSE pieces to be banned. You or I said it once on the MT forum, creating a ban list would only open a can of worms.
I probably will increase the “roster” that league participants will be allowed to use to somewhere around 14-15 ships.

OK, I thought you meant that all players would pick from a pool of only 10 ships when there are hundreds that exist.
Maybe the first season, no ban list. If things got boring or predictable with BC/CJS/events, those could go without anything else being banned. It is a can of worms though, since the hierarchy of pieces is subjective to some extent. (ex: BC>CJS>Hidden Cove>DHII? Or maybe not? XD)
December 28, 2019 at 4:41 PM #10589XerecsModeratorI was thinking that Custom ships could be phased in as seasons go by, as opposed to banning stuff. I suppose both could work.
January 31, 2020 at 8:52 PM #10649XerecsModeratorIt took me a little longer than I would have liked, but I have finalized the rules for the Pirates VASSAL League.
Rules
All regular game-play rules will apply to league games; except for game winning conditions (see winning a game, under matches); Gold will be placed face-down on a home island, not face-up. Gold on a ship will not be split between players after a ship sinks; it goes down with the ship.
The no duplicates rule, 2 action limit, and all other rules will still apply.
Set-up
All Pirates League games will be 60 points, and will use 7 islands. All games will be played on the VASSAL module. Islands will be placed at least 2L away from one another. Two of every type of terrain (except for trade currents, whirlpools and Icebergs) will be placed on the map, at least S away from an island.
Both players will contribute 10 coins. Players MUST include at least one coin with a printed gold value, but players are otherwise free to include as many Unique Treasures as they wish.
All pieces made by Wizkids including the Unreleased pieces found in the Pirates Master Spreadsheet may be used.Players will build their 60 point fleet using the ships they have drafted.Draft
There will be 12 rounds to the Draft. All players will enter into a lottery drawing to determine draft order. Players MAY agree to swap their pick, but must inform a league manager.
Going in draft order, players will select ships to add to their roster of ships. Once a ship has been selected by a player, it MAY NOT be selected by another player. For example, player A has the first pick of the draft, and may choose any ship to add to their pool of ships. Player A decides they do not want the first pick of the draft, and player B does. Both players agree to swap picks. Player B now has the first pick of the Draft and chooses the HMS Dover as their first pick. Player A is now next up on the board, and may choose any ship EXCEPT the HMS Dover.
Matches
Each match will be a best of three games. Players will roll dice to determine who will go first in the initial game, and will alternate for the second. For example,
Player A and Player B are going to play their match. They both roll dice. Player B rolls higher and goes first for the first game, with player A going second. In the next game, player A will go first and player B will go second. If a third game is necessary, the winner of the second game will go first in the third game.
Winning a game:
A game ends when all available gold is no longer in play (placed on a home island). Gold inside of forts is still in play unless the opposing fleet is unable to give their ships actions (either because all of their ships have been sunk, or are derelict with no way to move).Gold is still considered to be in play with fleets that make use of a home island raiding ability; until the ships or crew have been removed from the game.
Tiebreakers:
In the event of a tie gold score, remaining points in play will be added to the gold score to determine the tiebreaker.Playoffs
When all regular season matches have been played, the players with the best win-loss record will compete in a playoff tournament.
The tournament will be broken down into rounds, consisting of up to 5 matches between playoff players. To advance to the next round of playoffs, a player must win 3 matches against the opposing player. If a player loses 3 matches, they are eliminated from the playoff round.Winning the playoffs:
The player that advances to the final round of the playoffs and defeats their opponent becomes the champion and is declared the best player of Pirates CSG.- This reply was modified 4 years, 8 months ago by Xerecs.
February 21, 2020 at 1:31 PM #10661XerecsModeratorI’ve posted about it on other pirates sites, should have posted here first…… Anyway, the previous deadline to sign up has come and gone, and at that time only one person had signed up for the league. I’ve decided to extend the deadline to midnight PST of the 29th of this month. Hopefully that’s enough time for some more people to sign up.
February 27, 2020 at 11:25 PM #10669XerecsModeratorReminder to all, the deadline for the Pirates League is this Saturday at midnight PST. Send me a message if you want to sing up.
March 16, 2020 at 3:47 AM #10705XerecsModeratorMade an edit to the main rules, regarding gold on home islands and what happens when a ship with gold sinks.
