Maybe a good topic would be some of the weird things that happened during the PotCS print runs.
For example, the MI 029 Coleoptera/Nautilus error. Is there a picture of concept art for the proper “gold” Coleoptera, online somewhere that I missed?

July 27, 2019 at 2:37 PM #8213WoelfModeratorThere might be a photoshopped image or two floating around out there somewhere, but if an original correct version or rendering exists, it hasn’t made its way out to the public.
July 27, 2019 at 4:32 PM #8215BenKeymasterI’m sure old_man could come up with a nice list. 😀

It’s so bizarre. A while back at MT, someone had a compelling argument based (I think) on Jules Verne material that said the Coleoptera was supposed to look like the Nautilus because she was designed to be disguised as such. Perhaps that was an alternate or later version of the ship. The flavor doesn’t match of course. I don’t know who said that or if it’s true, and maybe they were just misleading people lol. (but it seemed for real based on their explanation) Almost like a double negative/reversed situation.
Didn’t find it; MT looked a bit different back then….
July 27, 2019 at 5:07 PM #8217J_ARRRRR_PParticipantColeoptera makes my eyes water. It’s a mockery of the fact I don’t have the TRUE Nautilus (or Captain Nemo) yet! 😉
Woelf mentioning the possibility of photoshop-to-the-rescue sounds great to me. I’ll ask a friend who does GD to git right on dat! If he comes through, I’ll share the results.
Next oddball: Also from MI, why is the German print iteration of 028 Prussian Crown (“Preussische Krone”) considered unusual, as noted on the spreadsheet for that set? I do have one of these; the answer should be right in front of me! But, duh, I just don’t see the significance – other than nice bit of historical pride for the region.
July 27, 2019 at 5:20 PM #8218BenKeymasterI didn’t think of it until now, but I just realized I could use a spare Locker to make a gold Coleoptera using the gold paint I used for my gold island and the gold ship from Command the Oceans.

The only thing I can think of is if the other ship names from the German edition of that set are printed in English (which I assume is not the case).
I wanted to make the Master Spreadsheet comprehensive, so Holofernes’ Jolly Rodger was used for notes and trivia.
July 27, 2019 at 5:33 PM #8219J_ARRRRR_PParticipantPotSM printing oddities: It would make me crazy (ok, crazier) to have to try to collect one whole set of the “lighter cards” of its first run, then another of the slightly darker ones which came after (not referring to UL). This is the set I’ve had to trade for the most/buy from aftermarket sources the most to get near to completion. It’s a mixed bag & it’s gonna stay that way unless someone gives me a compelling argument why it shouldn’t…
July 27, 2019 at 5:39 PM #8220J_ARRRRR_PParticipant@Ben: DO IT! Bling the heck out of a Locker and take her out on the prowl! I miss customizing, you’re gonna pull me back into that, too…

Yeah, some of the collectors out there have certainly done that, but I just want at least one of everything. 3 sets in 1 is not worth it to me.
@Ben: DO IT! Bling the heck out of a Locker and take her out on the prowl! I miss customizing, you’re gonna pull me back into that, too…
I might do that. Fits with some recent game ideas I’ve been having too… just no idea if I can pull it off this year. (unlikely)
The sheer quantity of custom game pieces created since your last long stay at MT is staggering – definitely more than 2000, and possibly over 3,000 (mostly by myself, Xerecs, El Cazador, and JW Darkhurst). O_O The Custom Ships thread has picked off where the second one left off at MT (both MT threads had many hundreds or thousands of replies), and you can find my ~1600+ customs here.
July 28, 2019 at 1:43 AM #8227XerecsModeratorI miss customizing, you’re gonna pull me back into that, too…
Yes….. Join us….. 😀
It’s totally crazy how Customs have blown up. I’ve made thee full custom sets, and introduced a new one-off faction in the third one. Ben has made the most I think, which I find kind of funny, since I recall him not really being into custom ships (outside of histoical ones) when it fist came up on MT. 😀
I don’t like speaking for him, but JW has only shared about half of his total custom things. There are two more sets he has planned and mostly finished that come after Pirates: The Seas of Doom. He’s posting the LE’s for that now in the Custom ships thread.
July 28, 2019 at 7:05 AM #8229J_ARRRRR_PParticipantWow, guys! That is so awesome (your Customs)! I’m totally reeled in!
July 28, 2019 at 12:36 PM #8258Matt LovellParticipantEven as someone who generally considers himself a near OCD completionist, that shading difference for SM is just not something I want to try and tackle.
July 29, 2019 at 6:48 AM #8270J_ARRRRR_PParticipantThank you, Matt, for your take on the color variance re. collectability.
SM anomaly: In the Ghost LEs, there’s GC-001, and GC-003, BUT NO GC-002. Arrrrrgh!
July 29, 2019 at 7:38 AM #8271Matt LovellParticipantand the FN equivalent in Polaris pack 300 Polaris, 301 Serpents Fang, (No 302), 303 Odin’s Revenge.

I keep a bunch of the lighter cards mixed in with all of other cards used for playing, but that’s almost entirely due to nostalgia because most of those were literally the first cards I owned for the game.
Had I jumped into the game starting with a later set or even after the reprints, I probably would have avoided the lighter cards as much as possible, and probably would have tried to replace any that I did encounter, just to keep everything looking consistent. The darker and more vivid colors on everything else looks so much better. Crazy collectoring aside, there’s little to no reason to seek out the lighter cards.

Now that you mention it, that sounds familiar too. It was more than likely in a forum post, because the same question seemed to come back up at least once or twice every year when someone new discovered the error for the first time.
The flavor text definitely doesn’t agree with it, but it sounds plausible as something from one of the books.
Whenever I used that sub, I’d just reverse the two deckplate sides. It was ugly, but made it much easy to identify at a glance, especially if the real Nautilus was also in play.

I agree completely. Someone recently at the Facebook group prefers the faded cards and said they love anything with a matte finish.
I’m pretty much all about using a collection, so as long as I have one copy of each item from Spanish Main (punched/unpunched/from any printing), I’m happy. XD
At this point I think I will have to make a gold Coleoptera.
July 31, 2019 at 4:20 PM #8415XerecsModeratorAbout how rare was the Revenge from SM? Not the 11 point uncommon one, but the promotional one?
July 31, 2019 at 5:05 PM #8419J_ARRRRR_PParticipantPP-376 – the 12 pt. promo version of SM Revenge – was hard for me to get. I don’t remember the specifics, sorry – just that it was a relief to finally have that one “checked off.”
Others may have had a different experience…

It’s like the blue Mountain Dew “Liberty Brew” my husband brought home a couple days ago…
I want to enjoy it, but…hmmmm…Really, just weird.
Here’s a link to the publisher’s website: https://www.peginc.com/product-category/pirates/
There are (3) One Sheets for free download which tie-in.

July 31, 2019 at 5:58 PM #8424Dread PirateParticipantI always get a chuckle every time I see the Ocean’s Edge Deliverance. If I remember right. One of the sails has 2 different cannons on either side and both are different from what’s printed on the card. 😛
July 31, 2019 at 6:01 PM #8426BenKeymasterAbout how rare was the Revenge from SM? Not the 11 point uncommon one, but the promotional one?
Not all that rare from what I know. I don’t remember having trouble acquiring mine and I don’t think I paid much. I think a collector posted at MT about giving them away. (though they shouldn’t be as common as the Obago)
July 31, 2019 at 6:02 PM #8428Dread PirateParticipantThere are a bunch of revenges hidden in lots on ebay right now.
July 31, 2019 at 6:08 PM #8430J_ARRRRR_PParticipantI’ve been trying – unsuccessfully – to embed a link to the Pinnacle Entertainment Group, publishers of the 2007 Pirates of the Spanish Main RPG hardback book which mashed up our beloved CSG w/the Savage Worlds roleplaying platform.
Anyway, at the publisher’s website are some free downloads of One Sheets for GM use. They are a fun bit of PotSM weirdness, IMO.
July 31, 2019 at 6:10 PM #8431BenKeymasterI’ve been trying – unsuccessfully – to embed a link to the Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Yes, links are not working for anyone but me it seems. Sorry and I’m trying to fix it.

Thanks, Ben – was more than willing to believe it was me, doin’ somethin’ wrong…
July 31, 2019 at 6:56 PM #8425J_ARRRRR_PParticipantThese are out there…I mean, they’re “really out there“, LOL!

Captain Vendari has played and enjoyed that a bunch in the past.

Paddle faster, I hear banjo music!
Yup, that one’s a mess!
August 1, 2019 at 12:37 PM #8505J_ARRRRR_PParticipantSo, I have a DPotC island printed w/112 graphics but cut from the die for 109, “flipped.” Will take some pics when I can so y’all can see this weirdness for yourselves…
Obviously, a machining error.
August 2, 2020 at 3:17 PM #11575BenKeymasterHolofernes and Woelf both said they have not seen this before… which means to me that it’s a true mystery. Anyone know what it’s from? Maybe that “Terror Trials” was a tournament at a con?
