I really like that you only need one pack to play this game. No starter pack required. However; we all know the game gets much better with more ships (see all of Ben’s campaign games)
Has anyone actually played a game with the contents of a single pack?

I can’t remember exactly how my first “games” went down back in 2005, but it’s possible that I played out of just one pack because that’s what the Start Here rules suggest. However, my first purchase was 2 packs of SM, so it’s likely I learned with both of them.
I agree that it’s a cool feature of the game/distribution, but if the game was relaunched I would probably want at least 4 ships per pack to have a much better chance of balancing point costs/factions/etc. Or a starter pack/box with either 8 or 10 ships total.
Thanks for starting a new thread topic too. The forum could use more topics started by someone other than me. XD

For example, I got the Revenant in one pack and then my next ship was the Picador D: I couldn’t imagine anybody having fun with that kind of power disparity! My first pack ever was interesting because it was pretty balanced, oddly enough. It contained El Ladron and the HMS Birkenhead, which was pretty cool to see.
I like Ben’s idea that 4 ships should come per pack, that way there’s more of an attempt at balance if someone pulls something great- just use two ships vs that one bomb or something.
March 6, 2019 at 9:31 PM #3545JackParticipantMy first several dozen games were with one pack of Spanish Main and one Crimson Coast. I got a lot of mileage out of it. IIRC it included…
– El Dorado
– Snipe
– Santiago
– El Castillo del Infanta
– Ghostly Encounter
I think Thomas Gunn the Elder came in my first Spanish Main pack, but I couldn’t use him. I generally had the El Dorado act as though it were a Spanish ship and have it go up against the Santiago and Snipe.

I already had that SM pack earlier so we had a good amount of ships to begin with. I bought a couple more SM packs later and now I’m getting individual ships so my collection has exponentially grown.
March 6, 2019 at 9:47 PM #3549JackParticipant95% of my games were on my own or forcing my little brother to play with me lol. I had two friends that got into it but I moved across country about six months after hooking them on it.
March 6, 2019 at 9:56 PM #3552MechavelliParticipantDang, that’s gotta be rough. I’m glad I got some of my friends into it but I definitely wish I could find a couple more people that were interested in it so I could have more games going on. It’s not even about the investment I have in the game, it’s more about actually playing the game since it’s really fun and honestly, I can kind of see how Ben has been playing this for years.

That sounds amusing; I like hearing about Pirates origin stories and why people like certain ships more than others. HMS Lord Walpole and HMS Birkenhead will always have a special place in my collection as my first English ships.
I got some college friends into it, but I don’t live near them anymore (+ done with college), hence my lack of physical playing compared to 2015-2017 (started teaching people in 2015).

Indeed. For me the variety is incredible – 14 sets (including RtSS but not including tons of customs), over 1,000 ships, essentially endless build total options (generally in the range of 10-500 points though lol), and TONS of Game Ideas and huge games to play.
March 7, 2019 at 8:53 PM #3583MechavelliParticipantEl Ladron was my first pirate ship, it will always be one of my favorites even though it’s not exactly a very playable ship. I love the flavor text it has, it really inspires light roleplaying within the setting.
I, for one, am very excited to try out the alternate game modes. I saw that there was a fleet made for a “rescue the VIP” game, and that got me thinking about how cool it would be if there was a sort of DnD-lite campaign with a narrative involved. The players would try to beat scenarios and the results would change the story going forward. Very interesting indeed!

I’d say she’s plenty playable as a cheap sort of hybrid, it’s just that the Pirates pretty much always have a better ship, and the Recreant is slightly better from the very same set. (not to mention the excellent Pandora, keeping the ship type the same)
March 7, 2019 at 10:51 PM #3595MechavelliParticipantDoesn’t the Pandora have worse guns and a slightly worse ability? I’m not sure I would take 3S guns and +1 to boarding rolls over 2S guns and an autoheal, or a crew snipe

Yes, but SEVEN cargo. More than any other non-Hoist 3 master, and by a lot in most cases. She’s not the best gunship of the three, but makes the best hybrid and best gold runner, and therefore is the best of those three in my opinion.
March 7, 2019 at 11:06 PM #3600MechavelliParticipantWhoa oh man I didn’t even see that! That’s horrifying, you could clean out an entire island with that single ship!
