New Keyword: Screw Ship – A ship with this keyword is not derelict when it has no masts remaining. If it has no masts, its base move becomes L.

Does this work only with a generic Explorer, or does anyone with the keyword count?   Looking specifically at Dominic Freda from RotF (Explorer, +1 cargo, takes up no space), who thanks to the similar-but-technically-stackable wordings would give this ship +2 cargo while taking up none.

Silver Explorers have to be considered too, but they shouldn’t an issue either way.

It’s intended to function the same way an ability referencing a Captain does, so any generic explorer or any crew with an Explorer keyword.

Any restrictions on what it can fire at?   This doesn’t override any abilities about shooting at submerged ships, so it would have to be assumed to only work against surface ships unless specifically stated otherwise.

What about a Marine on a island?

This ability is intended to indicate that the ship is able to fire a sort of early/primitive underwater torpedo, so in effect it would work mostly the same as a regular cannon. I had forgotten about marines, some clarifying text indicating they cannot be targeted is likely to be in order. With that as well as some clarifying text about submerged pieces (it shouldn’t be able to fire at them regardless of if an ability would allow it) I may end up turning it into a keyword to better abbreviate.

As only three of the major factions got subs in MI, I made custom subs for the other three majors who did not get any:

    Name: Poseidon
    Cost: 14
    Faction: English
    Segments: 3
    Cargo: 4
    Movement: S+S
    Cannons: 2L-3L-4L
Ability: Submarine. Once per turn, reroll any die roll made for this ship; you must use the second die roll result.
Flavor Text: Following successful experiments with submersible technology, the Royal Navy has developed a new class of ship that will further help them rule the waves.

    Name: Resurgam
    Cost: 13
    Faction: English
    Segments: 2
    Cargo: 3
    Movement: L
    Cannons: 3L-3S
Ability: Submarine. Once per turn, one crew or ship within S of this ship cannot use its ability that turn.
Flavor Text: Resurgam was designed with the express purpose of disrupting the enemy’s line of battle undetected.

    Cost: 9
    Faction: Spanish
    Segments: 3
    Cargo: 3
    Movement: S
    Cannons: 2L-4S-3S

2022 has been a pretty good year for me as far as Pirates is concerned. I fully rejoined the community after taking a step back in 2020, I finally completed my custom set which I’d first envisioned two years ago, and I increased my collection from a measly 94 ships to a grand fleet of 261.

I think my “Fleet of the Year” would have to be my 70 point English fleet I played during the holiday giveaway contest, with my 150 Spanish/American fleet from that same contest close behind.

I’ve got a couple favorite pictures from this year, all coming from the aforementioned contest:

but I think my true “Picture of the Year” has to be the second fleet review I did back in October (and since my collection has grown so much since even then, I just might be doing another later this month…)

My “Game of the Year” was definitely the 150 point Thanksgiving game I got to do with my brothers, even if it ended early. It was the highest point total I’ve played a game at (although not the largest I’ve played in terms of space) and had lots of action, and was just overall great fun all around.

For a “Thing of the Year”, if I’m understanding the category correctly, I’d say how large my collection has grown. I came close to tripling my original collection of ships, not to mention the crew, which I’d comparatively little of at the start of the year. My collection also greatly diversified, having gone from being primarily made up of SM and OE pieces (and there being nothing from about half the sets) to being made up of at least one piece from each released set, and being composed of a pretty even split between most of the sets.

My “Theme of the Year” I’d say is customs. Not only did I complete my custom set, but including the pieces from it I created around 167 customs in total this year, which is a number I’m pretty proud of. And there are several more in certain stages of creation, all which I hope to finish over the coming year!

Although the song Barrett’s Privateers got referenced with HMS Antelope (BC 052), I don’t quite feel the piece properly represents the song it’s referencing. so I’ve created a few pieces which I feel better encapsulate the ship and her crew:

    Name: Antelope

    Cost: 6

    Faction: English

    Link: Elcid Barrett

    Masts: 2

    Cargo: 3

    Movement: L

    Cannons: 3S-3S

Ability: Schooner. This ship sinks when her last mast is eliminated.

Flavor Text: A scummy and poorly-kept vessel, the Antelope has received a letter of marque from King George to raid American waters.

    Name: Elcid Barrett

    Cost: 1

    Faction: English

    Link: Antelope, Barrett’s Privateers

Ability: Captain. Non-English ships get +1 to their cannon rolls against this ship.

Flavor Text: Although an incompetent sailor, the ever opportunistic Elcid Barrett has secured himself a ship and a letter of marque from the king. He hopes now to make his fortune raiding American merchant ships in the Caribbean and along the New England coast.

    Name: Barrett’s Privateers

    Cost: 5

    Faction: English

    Link: Elcid Barrett

Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls. One of this ship’s treasures is worth +1 gold when she docks at your home island.

Flavor Text: Recruited to crew his new raiding vessel, Barrett’s Privateers were told they’d be able to earn easy money and that they’d never have to face any actual combat.

Thanks for putting this on, Ben! Had a great time playing and had just as fun writing up the reports. This was probably the most I’ve played in a while, and its definitely inspired me to try and play more often.

    Happy Holidays!

Cool set and thanks for sharing! Hopefully my feedback makes sense and doesn’t sound too harsh.

Thanks! And keep in mind this is just some of the pieces, the full 144 (192 if you count generic crew, but I don’t) piece set should see full release later today. And it wasn’t harsh at all, I’ll definitely be taking it into consideration! I’ll take another look at pricing on the pieces you mentioned, but at least for initial playtesting some might remain similar to the original calculated price until I can get a good idea of how they play. Thanks again for the input!

Decided to just rework False Sighting altogether. Its new effect is similar, although hopefully more balanced:

At the beginning of this ship’s turn, roll a d6. on a 5 or a 6, skip this ship’s turn and remove False Sighting from the game. This treasure cannot be unloaded.

I would suggest a re-word to Mortar Shot.

    Will do.

Does this apply to any of the ships cannons, or just the Ornate one? I would suggest some text that specifies.

It’s meant to apply to all cannons, not just the extra one granted by the treasure.

This would be a powerful one I feel, if a little wonky. Would you round up or round down if your opponent has an odd number of gold on their home island?

Round down, so as to maybe keep this treasure a bit more balanced. I’ll add some wording to clarify.

Oof. This is like Mermaids. Not sure if the two turn skip should be kept.

Hmm, what if I made it so the two turns lost is only when a 6 is rolled? Or would that still teeter on unbalanced? If so I’ll give some thought to a different alternate effect.

I come today with the completed unique treasures of Pirates of the Baltic Sea, and will probably be the last post I make on the set for a little while.

    Name: Mortar Shot
    ID: 101

Effect: Once per turn, during a shooting action this ship may double the range of one of her cannons, but a 5 or a 6 must be rolled to hit. On a hit, remove Mortar Shot from the game.

    Name: Ornate Cannons
    ID: 102
    Rarity: Rare
Effect: This ship gains one 3S cannon that can shoot from any mast. If a 1 or a 2 is rolled when shooting, eliminate a mast from this ship and remove Ornate Cannons from the game.

    Name: Gunpowder Barrels
    ID: 103
    Rarity: Rare
Effect: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls. All this ship’s cannons are L-range. When this ship is hit, replace the removed mast with a fire mast and remove Gunpowder Barrels from the game. If this ship is hit by a firepot, replace two masts with a fire mast and remove Gunpowder Barrels from the game.

    Name: Traitor
    ID: 104
    Rarity: Rare
Effect: When this ship initiates a boarding party, her opponent may choose one crew with a point cost of 1 or 2 from this ship to be placed on their ship if the other ship has the required cargo space. Once this action is completed, remove Traitor from the game. This treasure may not be unloaded.

    Name: Stowaway
    ID: 105
    Rarity: Rare
Effect: When this treasure is loaded, roll a d6. On a 1 or a 2, eliminate a random piece of cargo from this ship. On a 3 or a 4, this ship loses her next turn. On a 5 or a 6, bring in a crew worth less than 3 points to this ship, so long as she has the required cargo space. Eliminate Stowaway from the game once the effects of the roll have been applied.

    Name: Stortebeker’s Skull
    ID: 106
    Rarity: Rare
Effect: If loaded by a Cursed ship, this ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against non-Cursed ships and forts. If loaded by another nation’s ship, this ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against the Cursed, and the Cursed get +1 to their cannon rolls against this ship.

    ID: 149
    Rarity: Super Rare
Effect: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against non-Pirate ships and forts. All other ships and forts get +1 to their cannon rolls against this ship. This treasure cannot be unloaded.

    Name: Riches from Distant Lands

    Name: False Sighting
    ID: 307
    Rarity: Limited Edition/Promo
Effect: When this treasure is loaded, roll a d6. On a 1-3, this ship must skip her next turn. On a 4-6, this ship must skip her next two turns. Eliminate False Sighting from the game once the effects of the roll have been applied.

One thing you could maybe do is make the six roll also include the five effect so it eliminates all crew (or just named crew?) before capturing the ship, so you’re still getting the ship but it won’t be as capable as it was.

I like that idea, feels right and makes sense. I’ll add it to my spreadsheet. Thanks for the help!

This should be limited to once per turn, so it can’t be infinitely chained with lucky rolls.  It might be a minor issue on a single-mast ship, but imagine it being copied by a 10-master, or even a 5-mast ship.  It should also be clarified that it gives a single shoot action if any sixes are rolled during the first action, not a shoot action for each six rolled.

I’ll be sure to add clarifying text.

The six roll on this one feels right on the edge of being game-breaking.  Get this character on a 10-masted ship with a re-roller and you can potentially grab almost anything else without much of a fight.  Testing would definitely be needed to be sure, but no one is going to enjoy watching their fully-loaded warship get stolen and immediately turned against them after a single lucky die roll.

I certainly plan on doing some play testing once the set is more or less complete. I’m a little hesitant on changing the effects of the ability as I personally really like the idea, however I’m definitely not opposed to adding further restrictions to make that result harder to achieve. Is there anything you would suggest?

I had completely blanked on the fact that the abilities contradicted, thank you for pointing that out. The vessel that piece is based off of was labeled as a yacht in the database I was using and so I just tacked on the keyword without really thinking about it. As for the keyword itself, it’s a holdover from the first ship made for the set from about two years ago, and has actually since been somewhat gutted as it originally included a +1 to cannon rolls against pirates. Reexamining it now I think I might just cut it since as you pointed out, it practically serves no purpose as a keyword. I’ll definitely be taking another look at everything else I’ve currently got completed to make sure there aren’t any other big issues like that.

    Cost: 5
Ability: Once per turn, one crew or ship within S of this ship cannot use its ability that turn. This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls agaisnt forts.
Flavor Text: Admiral Nordenskold is known to blockade enemy fortresses and encampments, prefering to starve his enemies before an attack.

    Name: Danjel Karlsson
    ID: 086
    Rarity: Common
    Cost: 6
Ability: Once at the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a result of 6, any ship in your fleet may be given two actions that turn.
Flavor Text: Danjel Karlsson is able to bring a friendly and encouraging face to an otherwise hostile ocean, a quality much appreciated by many of his shipmates.

    Name: Vaxholm Fortress
    ID: 087
    Rarity: Common
    Cost: 3 gold
    Cannons: 3L-3L-3L-3L
Ability: This fort gets +1 to its cannon rolls against the Russians.
Flavor Text: The Vaxholm Fortress has had many purposes over its 300 year history, having to be rebuilt multiple times; it currently serves to defend against sporadic Russian attacks.

    New keywords:
Turuma: A ship with this keyword can’t pin or be pinned. If this ship rams she can’t eliminate a mast from the rammed ship, but boarding may occur as normal. When given a move action, if this ship is within 1S of an island, she can rotate 360° around her mid-point prior to moving. This ship may be given move actions when it has no masts; its printed base move becomes S.
Yacht: If this ship carries no cargo, she gets +S to her base move.

@Woelf the ability was meant to be similar to schooner. As I said, I need to do some heavy wording changes, as it’s supposed to be the ship’s mid-point.

Here’s another ship from Pirates of the Baltic Sea:

Relevant Keywords: Turuma – When this ship is within 1S of an island, it may rotate 360° around its mid-point. If this ship has lost its masts, it may still move half of its base movement speed, but crew abilities benefiting movement have no effect. Unnamed crew cost 1 less point when aboard this ship. (the wording needs a lot of work)

    Norden

    Ship Type: Galley

    Cost: 12

    Affiliation: Sweden

    Masts: 2

    Cannons: 2S-3S

    Cargo: 4

    Movement: S+S

    Ability: Turuma.

Flavor Text: One of the first of a new design of galleys built for the Swedish navy.

I’m still a little unsure on the point cost.

Fantastic! Will it be entirely based on history?

    @Ben

Not quite historical so much as more realistic than say Ocean’s Edge. There will be some ships/crew that are fictitious, while still being well within the realm of possibility. Also, just for a bit of fun and flavor, the Swedes will be getting a long ship or two, perhaps one for Germany to fill out their ranks. There will also be a decent number of ships across the set that never truly existed, but are certainly believable

mostly separate from the set I’m also going to give each new faction a couple of ‘fantasy’ ships (like sea monsters or windcatchers)  just for a bit of fun

I’ll be sure to clarify, but Yacht is meant to only have bonuses against ships, as the keyword is meant to indicate a small, fast, pirate (ship) hunter.

I HIGHLY recommend using wording as close as possible to Wizkids’ abilities.

the wording on everything is mostly WIP, I plan on going back and editing everything later on to be more akin to WizKids’

I don’t like the Brig keyword because the brigs I know about have 2 masts.

The Brig keyword was a bit of compromise, as the in-game ship better resembles (at least in my opinion) the 2-leveled 3 mast ship type, but they call it a brig, so I just went with it. I’ve honestly also never particularly liked the 2-mast square rigged ships, they just don’t quite look right to me.

If it’s always going to be attached to a ship and has no use on its own, this would make more sense as Equipment.

It could take up no cargo space when revealed (deployed).

I’m thinking it could also be “detached” and give it’s effects to whichever ship is closest.

Another ship from my Pirates of the Baltic Sea custom set, based on Mysterious Islands 028 Prussian Crown:

    Schultzie

    Cost: 23

    Affiliation: Germany

    Masts: 5

    Cannons: 2S-3L-3L-3L-2S

    Cargo: 4

    Movement: S+S

Ability: This ship eliminates two masts with one hit. If this ship has a captain crew, she gets +1 to her cannon and boarding rolls.

Flavor Text: After being recaptured from pirates by the Black Baron himself, the Schultzie was refitted to become one of the German Navy’s fiercest ships.

    Hot Air Balloons

Basically a support unit like native canoes. Destroyed in one shot, no firepower. Must be towed behind a ship, but doesn’t reduce the ship’s speed (unless the ship’s base move is three movements, then it will go down to its first two). It would give the ship towing it +1 to its cannon rolls unless it’s already a 2. You could also choose to roll a d6, and on a 5 or a 6 you would increase an S-range cannon to an L-range cannon. Not sure about point cost yet, but one ‘card’ so-to-speak would contain 2.

Seems okay, but I think the wording and language for the ability need to be cleared up. Simply saying “Cannot be boarded” is rather vague.

Thanks, I’ll be sure to edit it.

Does this mean that a Jade crew would be able to use their abilities on another pirate ship if Kenway was in the same fleet? If it does, then this is far too powerful.

Yeah, that was the original intent, but your right, that is too powerful. I’m going to change it to just the ship itself.

Does the second half of Assassin happen in addition to, or instead of the usual result? If it’s in addition to, I could see the keyword being worth about 5 points, since +1 to boarding rolls is about 2.

In addition to, and 5 points for the keyword was my thinking aswell

Does this mean that he has the helmsman ability, or does it mean something else?

Yes, he has the helmsman ability, however I’m considering removing that line.

I’ve been playing Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag recently, and I wanted to create a ship and crew based on it, so here’s what I’ve come up with.

Relevant Keywords: Assassin: +1 to all boarding rolls. After a successful boarding party, roll a d6. On a 5 or a 6, eliminate the crew with the highest point cost.

Brig: This ship gets +1 to all ramming rolls.

    Jackdaw

    Cost: 13

    Affiliation: Pirate

    Masts: 3

    Cannons: 3S, 2L, 3S

    Cargo: 4

    Movement: S+S

    Ability: Brig. Cannot be boarded.

    Link: Edward Kenway

Flavor Text: Originally the Spanish brig El Dorado, she was stolen from a treasure fleet in the middle of a hurricane by the pirate Edward Kenway and rechristened the Jackdaw.

    Edward Kenway

    Cost: 7

Ability: Assassin. Any nationality crew can use their abilities on any ship in this fleet. Acts as a helmsman.

Link: Jackdaw (takes up no cargo space)

Flavor Text: Once a privateer for the Royal Navy, Kenway soon turned to a life of piracy after the Navy no longer wanted him.

I don’t know if this is too overpowered or not, but I tried to make the abilities similar to the game.

I’m creating a new set, called Pirates of the Baltic Sea. It will add Sweden and Russia, as well as a Germany that has united about 100 or so years earlier than in our time line (and has a stronger navy). These factions will replace Spain, France, and America. So far I’ve only finished one ship, so here it is:

Relevant Keywords:  Yacht: +1 to all shooting rolls against pirates. If the ship isn’t carrying any treasure or crew, it has an extra S movement.

    Ship Name: Große Jacht

    Cost: 11

    Faction: Germany

    Masts: 1

    Cannons: 3S

    Cargo: 3

    Movement: L

Ability: Yacht. If you roll a 6 when shooting, you may take another shoot action.

Flavor Text: Said to have originally been built as the private yacht of Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg, Große Jacht‘s crew have since modified the old luxury boat to hunt pirates along the Prussian coast.

Based on this ship (the one in the middle)

all comments and feedback are greatly appreciated, as I’m new to making custom ships and I’m not entirely sure if this is balanced or not.
