Mr. WickParticipantYou’re right it was lateen, my bad.
The Cogs general idea was to be kind of a pass the baton support ship, so my intended purpose of the Cogs ability was to allow nearby ships to “explore”, does this ound better, or is it maybe a bit off the mark.
Cog: Once per turn, a friendly ship within S of this ship may explore her as a free action. (I forgot equipment was a thing)
I also must ask how a ship is priced point wise prior to having any extraneous effects. Obviously Cog, Caravel, and Carrack will likely have point cost modifiers (assuming Schooner, Junk, Galley and the like have such modifiers as well) but what defines a ships base point cost. El Picador is a good example of a ship with no ability text, It’s a two masted ship with a point value of 5 I believe.
Mr. WickParticipantLooking for Criticism on the fallowing ship type ideas.
Cog, a single masted square-rigged river-merchant boat with a quartercastle (as jib galleon). Cogs will have below average speed (S to 2S), and mostly short range average accuracy guns. Cogs will have higher Cargo Capacity for ships of their size. They will also come with the “Cog” ship type ability which will be as follows.
Cog: Once, during it’s turn, any friendly ship within S of this ship may transfer any amount of gold, treasure, and/or crew from itself and/or this ship to the other as a free action.
I feel this will make the otherwise comparatively slow and underwhelming Cog somewhat useful to gold-runner as a kind of “pass the baton” ship that can resupply other ships. With proper set up they could form a decent chain of ships to transfer gold quickly across great distances. But otherwise the ships are slow and have low defensive abilities making them sitting ducks especially if caught out in the open laden with stuff.
Caravel, a lanteen sailed double or triple masted ship (2 masted ships have 2 lanteen sails like galleys, three masted ships have a square rigged mast at the foremast). Fast on average, more so than other ships of their size (S+L or 2L standard), but possess shorter range guns with lower accuracy. Relatively low cargo space over all. Caravels were known for their ability to sail into the wind, so the Caravel ship type ability would be somewhat similar to windcatcher and schooner.
Caravel: Once during this ships turn, after any of it’s movement segments, this ship may perform a stern turn as an additional free movement segment. If this ships cargo hold is full, she cannot perform a stern turn.
I feel this will make the 2 and 3 masted ships good at quick maneuvering and allow them to access and explore islands faster as well as run small amounts of gold.
Carracks. Carracks are notable for being 3 or 4 masted ships with the first two or three masts being square rigged while the mizzenmast was always lanteen rigged. They have a mix of guns. They have above average cargo capacity for their size and below average speed. They would also have the Carrack ship ability.
Carrack: If this ships cargo hold is full, her base move is increased by S.
I’m looking for criticism on these ship types and maybe better ideas for what their ship abilities might be if they have any.
Sorry of the long post.
Mr. WickParticipantI’m looking into maybe starting work on my own custom set focused around the protuguese, so I have two questions.
1: Is there a comprehensive (or moderately so) guide to the creation of custom ships/crew/etc. point wise?
2: Is the custom thread a good place to post new ship type ides for review by experienced players?
Mr. WickParticipantNo I see what you mean, like I said, I’m new to the more tactical aspect of the game and understand that those who have played likely have terms for these effects and reasons they use such terms, so I understand.
On a few completely unrelated notes, The early sets appear to be based off realistic or fictional regions of the ocean during the age of sail, so what area of the ocean is the crimson coast, judging by the addition of the French I assume the cajun south of america.
In a similar vein, I’m actually surprised thinking back that there wasn’t really a set based around the indian ocean or spice trade, which would have undoubtedly added either the Portuguese or dutch factions, which are conspicuously missing despite their prevalence during the age.
Mr. WickParticipantNot to be bothersome, but are there additional “keywords” some people use for longer abilities that aren’t on the list. I have seen the keywords and slang-words list but I kind of feel that a few additional abilities with extensive card texts could probably be summarized with shorter key-phrases, HI Raiders could probably just have the keyword “Raider”, for example.
Idk, just spit-balling some ideas… I’m kinda new to this more well thought out play style so I’m sure those who use the names they do have their reasons backed by experience. Just a personal idea to better categorize ships and crew.
(This ship ignores the first his she takes as long as she has all her masts)[Ironsides],
(This ship cannot be shot at by ships within S of her)[Agile]
(After this ship resovles a shoot action, she may move as a free action/Reverse-captain)[Swift]
Mr. WickParticipantIf a ship has a Base Move of L+S/S+L does that ship have to move L then S in that order (and vice versa). If so, what, if any, is the mechanical advantage of one over the other.
Mr. WickParticipantNot sure if this question goes here but here goes. I’ve noticed a few “unofficial” keywords when describing semi-common abilities, like “Fog-hopper”. If at all possible is there some kind of general list of unofficial keywords of the like.
Mr. WickParticipantI think, lore wise, cursed Devereaux is captaining the Specter, it has the exact same goal in it’s story as devereaux is given in his flavor text.
Mr. WickParticipantIn your opinions, if Papa Doc, Tabatha McWarren, Devereaux, Wraith, and Sammy the Skull have “flagships” or “signature ships”, what are they. I assume Sammy’s is likely to be the Grim Reaper or the Crushed Skull.
Mr. WickParticipantOH I see what your getting at, a rank 6 is basically a free sac mast if you get hit without losing any useful firepower. That’s actually really clever.
Mr. WickParticipantI hate to ask a follow up question (mostly bc you were kind enough to answer my previous question regarding Baturawa and Munchhausen), but looking at the images in the thread it would seem that Le Jongleur and Hanno are galleys but lack the Galley keyword. I’m assuming Phlegyas is as well, as I didn’t see an image of it. Is this a similar situation to Carolina from Rev which is a schooner model but does not have the keyword deliberately? And if so, does this mean that by design it cannot move S without it’s mast as other Galleys do?
Mr. WickParticipantOut of frank curiosity, if anyone knows, the MI ships 201 and 202 (Munchhausen and Batuwara) are both tournament prize ships with 2 masts each (According to the Master Spreadsheet), are they blockade runner models or square-rigged models?
Mr. WickParticipantHow unfortunate, and kind of bothersome. Though I can find only 4 ships (Asp, Fire Djinn, Sultan’s Sword, and Marrkesh) with this limitation, and three of them appear to more focused on boarding Rolls so perhaps it balances out.
Mr. WickParticipantGood day everyone, my name is Mr. Wick
My username comes from a shortened form of my real name, and is the most recent such alias I use, especially in my short stories, novels, and Campaign Settings.
I got into Pirates CSG when Pirates of the Spanish Main began to be advertised. Hot off the heals of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie a year earlier and interestingly nearly coinciding with 4kids entertainments acquisition of the english rights to the Japanese Animation “One Piece”. At the time I was a big fan of trading card games (Poke’mon, Yugioh) and the thought of a Collectible Pirate Ship game was amazing to me. Unfortunately The game died in my area around the time of OE set and I could only get other packs rarely from game stores hours outside my hometown.
I’m equal parts collector and Player, though I have few people to play with, and never was able to get into the game to any form of skilled degree as there simply were no others to play with in my area (obviously there were other players but we had no game store and the early 2000s wasn’t exactly a time when you could go find others who shared your hobby). I collected what I could fervently until the game died around me. With the release of the Pirates CSG Master Spreadsheet I have a renewed vigor to collect and play again and even if I can’ I plan on melding many of the mechanics into my Dungeons and Dragons campaign worlds so others can experience the fun.
My favorite thing about Pirates CSG is that it give people the ability to think and play as though they existed in the golden age of piracy hundreds of years ago. While the game is entirely fictional I had always enjoyed the idea of the true golden age of piracy, being free on the seas and going where the maps had yet to be drawn. It is partially what drew me to One Piece, the freedom and adventure. Here was a game not like other trading card games, there were people, and ships, in some ways homages to our past and yet unique, stories to tell of them, which you could follow by reading the flavor texts on cards. Playing the game was like living out the adventures.
If I could pick a favorite piece, it would have to be the Baochuan, though I regrettably do not possess it. I’ve always liked the truth of Chinese Treasure ships and how actually massive they once were. To captain a baochuan would be such a truly amazing experience.
I have no other aliases on other PCSG website because, frankly, I didn’t know they existed. Much like the board-game “Heroscape”, I believed this game to be extinct, with no surviving player bases or collectors. But now that I am proven wrong I have plans to rebuild my old fleet (most preferably with a 3d printer and ship models so as not to damage the actual cards and ships) and try out at my cities new (and successful) game store if not in my own basement for my own amusement.
Sorry for the novel of an introduction, and I’m happy to meet all of you. Sincerely~ Captain-Commander Wick
Mr. WickParticipantFor cannons with a printed rank of 6, such as the Asp (RevUL-141 – “3S-5S-6S”) of the Fire Djinn (BC-007 “2L-4S-5S-6L”), is a 7 or higher need to hit (a number that cannot be rolled on a d6 normally)
