Jonathan BowenParticipantHi, it’s been a long time ??
@Ben: In response to your question about the Mountain Banshee, yes, I could make her a Double Catamaran, but there are two major problems with that. Firstly, I do plan on one day bringing most if not all of this set off the paper and into real models, and I highly doubt we’ll have a spare Double Catamaran to butcher. Secondly, by making her a mega card ship, that automatically moves her to the green-corner special edition category, and I’d really rather not have to make a brand new Mercenary piece to replace her, or have an SE section with literally one ship. So the Banshee will remain a standard three-mast ship, but I can keep the abilities attributed to specific ship types in mind so as not to create this sort of conundrum in the future.
-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Ben: Both the Wondrous Voyage and King Tharsis look like solid pieces to me. The Voyage is a tad slow for my tastes, but with 6 cargo, adding a helmsman doesn’t harm her carrying capabilities. Would use both in a game; just, probably not together ??
Jonathan BowenParticipantHello again, all; Thank you for your feedback! ???
I have edited my Google Doc with the appropriate changes to make the previous Mercenaries more playable. And so now, I’ve got a few more to post for y’all’s consideration. ?
(No Relevant Keywords this time)10. Crossed Axes
Points: 13
Masts: 3 (square)
Cannons: 3L,3L,3L
Cargo: 2
Base Move: L+S
Ability: Mercenary. This ship eliminates two masts with each hit.Flavor: “He demanded I give him the strength of ten men.”
11. Mountain Banshee
Points: 16
Masts: 3 (jib)
Cannons: 3S,2S,3S
Cargo: 2
Base Move: L+L
Ability: Mercenary. Each time this ship is hit, roll a d6. On a result of 5-6, this ship is not hit instead.Flavor: An exceptionally fast ship, the Banshee’s captain prides himself on his expertly crafted vessel, and his more than efficient crew.
12. Magnhild
Points: 16
Masts: 3 (square)
Cannons: 2S,2S,2S
Cargo: 2
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Mercenary. Extended Range. This ship eliminates two masts with each hit when she uses her printed cannon ranges.
Link: Niko RenFlavor: Niko Ren’s favorite ship, the Magnhild’s powerful cannons are especially formidable at closer ranges despite her long-distance capabilities.
13. Niko Ren
Points: 7
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Captain. Once at the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a 4-6, this ship cannot be shot or rammed by Cursed ships and this ship cannot shoot or ram Cursed ships for this turn.
Link: MagnhildFlavor: A man of few words, Ren seems to know where The Cursed are at all times, and how not to be noticed by them.
And with that, the end of the last full faction in Seas of Doom comes a little bit closer. Let me know your thoughts, concerns, comments and questions, and I’ll try to get back to you soon ?
Until next post,
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantForgot to add this to my last post ??
@Xerecs: The smaller changes can be made to the crew to make them easier to understand; I probably short-handed Leif’s ability, leading to your confusionI don’t think the Balrog needs to be that expensive, since I don’t think the ability would come into play except in a campaign
So, how many points do you recommend? About 18?
-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Xerecs: When it comes to Gimli and Leif, I probably used WK pieces as my point base, and then added onto them for Ex-Pat. Chances are, though, that WK over-priced them, especially the Marine.
And yes; it is a reference to Salem from FoBI ???@Ben: Looking at King Fergus, I could probably ditch the Crew Protection to keep him at a usable price? Between that and a re-cost, what do y’all think would be better to do?
-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantHeeeyyyyy….. It’s been a long time ???
But I’ve got more Mercenaries from Seas of Doom, and after them, I swear the set’s almost over ??Just one relevant keyword today 😀
1. World-Hater: This ship gets plus one to her cannon rolls against any ship of a different nationality. Now on to the pieces!
4. Lord John Gimli
Points: 9
Ability: Ex-Patriot. +1 to boarding rolls against The Cursed. When this ship wins a boarding party, you may eliminate the other ship’s crew.
Link: Sir Orlan LeifFlavor: Lord Gimli is an emotional, short-tempered man. When he hates something, he hates it completely; and right now, he really hates The Cursed.
5. Sir Orlan Leif
Points: 8
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Marine. +1 to gun rolls against Cursed targets.
Link: Lord John GimliFlavor: A close friend of Lord Gimli, Sir Orlan shares a hatred for the unnatural fiends of the sea. But unlike his friend, he never lets his emotions get in the way of his vengeance.
6. Balrog
Points: 22
Masts: 4
Cannons: 3S,2L,2L,3S
Cargo: 3
Base Move: L
Ability: Mercenary. This ship cannot be given fire masts. Once per turn, this ship may dock at an enemy fort. While there, she may initiate a “boarding party” against the fort. (Each flag on the fort is counted as a mast.) If this ship wins, the fort becomes a part of its fleet. If the fort wins, eliminate a cargo and a mast from this ship and move her L+L away from the fort’s island. No boarding bonuses may be used during this action.Flavor: The crew of the Balrog are a collection of madmen who fear nothing. They prove their reckless abandon by regularly challenging heavily armed imperial fortresses; and winning.
7. King Fergus of Clan Dunbroch
Points: 8
Ability: Ex-Patriot. This ship’s crew cannot be eliminated unless she sinks. This ship gets +1 to die rolls.
Link: Glaistig; Mérida of Clan DunbrochFlavor: After his wife was lost to a witch’s curse, King Fergus caught wind of the Witch Queen’s influence in the Cursed Empire, and decided to take to the seas in a quest to avenge his beloved queen.
8. Mérida of Clan Dunbroch
Points: 8
Ability: Ex-Patriot. Marine. World Hater.
Link: King Fergus of Clan DunbrochFlavor: King Fergus’s daughter, and an excellent marksman with both a bow and a musket, Mérida is in it more for the adventure, but would gladly put a bullet between the eyes of any sailor who flies the Red Skull.
9. Glaistig
Points: 21
Masts: 5
Cannons: 4L,3S,3S,3S,4L
Cargo: 6
Base Move: S
Ability: Mercenary. Two hits from the same shoot action are required to eliminate one of this ship’s masts.
Link: King Fergus of Clan DunbrochFlavor: With protection at the forefront of King Fergus’s mind, most of the Dunbroch clan fits safely on this massive war vessel, but at the great cost of her maneuverability and speed.
These are the Mercs for tonight, maaayyybe expect some more when the sun comes up on the west coast..? Regardless, I will try to post much sooner next time.
Leave your opinions, questions and comments, and I will try to answer them as soon as I can.Until next post,

Jonathan BowenParticipant@Ben: I think the typo is probably what threw me off the most ?
-The Kingdom’s first ability is the most immediately useful in my opinion, and the one I would utilize and remember most.
-The “Crew Possessing” ability that it has seems a little weird to me, but that’s just because most forts can’t be “assigned” crew like ships are.
-As for its third ability, that one has the potential to make it a broken piece, in my opinion. Considering that the Kingdom is Cursed, which means its controller probably has access to “All-Powerful” Davy and at least two potential “L-Moving” crew. The fort’s ability combined with spamming those crew abilities could easily tip the balance of a large/campaign game in the favor of the Cursed. (For simple explanation’s sake, the Kingdom’s controller could force any number of enemy ships to dock at the fort/touch the island using a series of successful rolls for Davy Jones (Ocean’s Edge), “Screaming” Mimi (Davy Jones’s Curse), or Tabitha McWarren (Fire and Steel))Overall, I don’t not like the Kingdom, I just find it to be a little “gimmick-y” for lack of better terms. I’d still use it in a game; I’d just likely forget to use the abilities after the first one. ??
-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantHello all, it’s been a while!!
Personally, the ability of the Kingdom of Horrors throws me off of it a bit, but I would totally use it as a well-armed staging area for combat-oriented ships. I don’t like most sea monsters of any kind, but with that ability, Lucifer’s Serpent immediately becomes the most likely for me to use. ??
The Fleeting Star and Exiled Father are an interesting combo. I think Ben and Xerecs have pretty much already explained what I’d probably use her for, especially with such a good point cost. A cheap ship that can repair other friendly ships sounds like a good deal to me.
On the topic of Mercenaries, it’s about time I introduce the Mercenaries from Seas of Doom!!
Today there is only one relevant keyword
–World-Hater: This ship gets plus one to her cannon rolls against any ship of a different nationality.1. Helm’s Deep
Gold: 4
Flags: 6
Guns: 2L,2L,3S,3S,4L,4L
Ability: World-Hater. When this fort’s last flag is eliminated, it is destroyed.Flavor: Now little more than ruins, this ancient stronghold found and put to use by Nemo’s father is once again seeing utilization by his son’s followers.
2. Durinsong
Points: 13
Masts: 3
Cannons: 4S,4S,4S
Cargo: 4
Base Move: L+S
Ability: Mercenary. Explorer.Flavor: It is said that the masts and spars of this vessel are engraved with lyrics to an ancient song, describing journeys to new, undiscovered lands. It is a song that her crew sings on every voyage as an omen of good luck in their travels.
3. Deathless
Points: 17
Masts: 4
Cannons: 2L,2S,2S,2L
Cargo: 3
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Mercenary. This ship cannot be sunk, but she can be scuttled.Flavor: Christened with the title of a legendary warrior, the Deathless is never truly defeated, always coming back from beyond what her enemies think is the point of no return.
The mercenaries are gonna be posted more sporadically and in larger groups than most other factions from this set. I will post again as soon as I can, but until then, feel free to give me your feedback and opinions on these pieces. I’ll respond to as much as I can, as soon as I can.
Until then
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Xerecs: ok, I will keep the WK phrasing in mind from now on. Although when I write the keyword abilities in posts, I’m actually copying and pasting them from my Google Doc. So I’ll try to edit the wording in the keyword texts in my Docs.
@Ben: ok, I can fix the Baron’s point cost no problem. Given what the Tiger Lily does, I was honestly more worried about whether I’d priced her right XD But either way, I think she’ll make an interesting ship to play-test.
Now onto the last of the French from Seas of Doom!!
Relevant Keywords:
–Sniper: You may double the range of this ship’s cannons each turn, but you must roll a 6 to hit.
–Repeating Guns: When this ship is given a shoot action, you may declare that she is using repeating guns. If all cannons hit during that shoot action, each cannon may shoot again. (This action does not count towards the two action limit) For each cannon that misses on its second shot, eliminate one mast or cargo from this ship.
–Reroll: Once per turn, you may reroll any die roll you make for this ship; you must use the second die roll result
19. Le Tireur d’Élite
Points: 13
Masts: 3
Cannons: 3L, 4L, 5L
Cargo: 4
Base Move: L
Ability: Sniper.Flavor: The gunners of the “Sniper” were trained by the officers of La Triumph. While they don’t have quite the acumen that that ship has, everyone has to start somewhere.
20. Mort Rapide
Points: 25
Masts: 4
Cannons: 3S, 3S, 3S, 3S
Cargo: 3
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Repeating Guns. Reroll.Flavor: Representing the shift in French naval doctrine, the Mort Rapide promises to bring a quick end to the English threat, meddlesome pirates, and the foul Cursed.
And now the French from Seas of Doom are done.
Next post here on the Custom Ships Thread will feature some gray-flagged sailors everyone can call both friends and enemies. ??Until next post
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantHello all!!
It’s been a while, so tonight/this morning, we’re getting double!
We are continuing with the French from Seas of DoomRelevant Keywords
–Blockade Runner: This ship gets +1 to ramming and boarding rolls. This ship can’t have her masts rammed off.
–Man-O’-War: Once per turn, before you give this ship a shoot action, roll a d6. On a result of an odd number, her cannons become 2-rank for this turn. On a result of an even number, she eliminates two masts with each hit.
15. Le Baron
Points: 15
Masts: 3 (square)
Cannons: 2S, 2L, 2S
Cargo: 3
Base Move: L
Ability: L-range cannons cannot hit this ship.Flavor: The crew of the Baron have mastered the art of moving slowly to go someplace quickly. Due to this, it is next to impossible to hit them from range.
16. Louise
Points: 14
Masts: 3 (jib)
Cannons: 3S, 2S, 3S
Cargo: 3
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Blockade Runner.Flavor: Constructed at the whim of a rich Baron of the court, the Louise was named for the Baron’s supposedly long lost love.

Points: 28
Masts: 4
Cannons: 3S, 3L, 4L, 4S
Cargo: 2
Base Move: L
Ability: Captain. Man-O’-War.
Link: Peter BelleroseFlavor: Formerly known for her rowdy and disobedient crew, the “Tiger Lily” has emerged as one of the best ships in the fleet, thanks to the guidance of Peter Bellerose.
18. Peter Bellerose
Points: 7
Ability: Helmsman. Marine.
Link: Lis de TigreFlavor: A veteran of the continental wars, Peter tired of life on the land, and took to the sea. He rose quickly through the ranks and was “rewarded” the Tiger Lily.
There are two more pieces for the French!! 😮
I will post he final part of France tomorrow, and it might be joined by some extras, as well…??
Until next post
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantThe Clarity and Berry seem like good pieces to me. I’d definitely use both of them in a game, assuming I was pirate. 😀
Here’s a couple more French from Seas of Doom! And no relevant keywords this time! 😮
13. Oeil d’Onyx
Points: 15
Masts: 3 (square)
Cannons: 3S, 3S, 3S
Cargo: 2
Base Move: S+S
Ability: This ship cannot be captured or made to change her faction affiliation.Flavor: The crew of the Onyx are patriots to the last. Nothing, not even death would sway their loyalty to the crown.
14. Faux Roi
Points: 11
Masts: 5
Cannons: 4L, 4S, 4S, 4S, 4L
Cargo: 3
Base Move: S
Ability: Eliminate one of this ship’s masts when she rolls a 1 on any cannon roll.Flavor: At one time this ship was a derelict hulk on the coastline, until a mob of disgruntled and displaced peasants found her, and made her seaworthy. Though the ship has cannons, the new crew do not have the faintest idea of how to operate them.
I’ll post some more later tomorrow or maybe later today. ?
Until next post-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Ben: Thank you for your feedback! ? I hear you about the Fleur, and we’ll be sure to play-test the piece probably this summer. As for the Saphir, I totally did not see the similarities between the her and Belle; probably because…I don’t know, actually ??? But I see your point, and have changed her point cost on my Doc.
Also: I have mixed feelings about the Combustion and the Flame Fiend because I actually have a similar-ish ship in the set following Seas of Doom ?? Either way, I look forward to seeing them in use.
I like the Grand Shrieking, and think it has the potential to be a sliiightly bjorken ship in the right circumstances. And the Devil’s Heir is really nice in my opinion because it’s a sixer that isn’t another “Grand Something”. ? Would her ability still work if “Devil” isn’t in English? (ex: Muerta del Diablo; RoDJ)
Jonathan BowenParticipantHello once again, everyone
Today’s/tonight’s/whenever its now’s post is brief and to the point:
Seas of Doom; French; Two more; Let’s go.Relevant Keyword:

The Minister and her builders have declared her unsinkable. The English and the Cursed eagerly await to test this claim.
12. Le Saphir de Rêve
Points: 13
Masts: 3
Cannons: 4S, 3L, 4S
Cargo: 3
Base Move: L
Ability: Schooner. Once per turn, you may look at one face down cargo on any ship.Flavor: The Sapphire of Dreams is not suited to fighting. However, her crew excels at knowing what’s in the cargo holds of nearby ships, both friend and foe.
Posting will probably become a little more boring as the rest of the french are primarily ships, and not even capital ones, at that. I might spring for a few double-value posts here and there, but Seas of Doom is slowly coming to a close. One more a faction and some special pieces, and the set will be done ?
Leave comments questions and concerns you may have about the pieces and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
Until next post
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantThe Courtship looks really specific in its abilities, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just very interesting. I’d both love to see how it could be used, and hate to see it used on me ?
With the implied combo, this would be a ship that most players would probably dread to see launched. However, depending on who’s playing and as what faction, it’ll become a huge target. Either way, can’t wait to see it in action, one way or another.Bonus funny: When I saw the link on the Archfiend, my mind read Courtship of Elvis ????
-Darkhurst

6. Fureur Vertueuse
Points: 15
Masts: 3
Cannons: 3S, 3S, 3S, 3S
Cargo: 3

And with that group, we are one post away from the halfway point in the French! At this point, I’ve pretty much given up on having a super tight posting schedule, but I will try to post once a week at the very least. With luck, and maybe a couple of double posts, we should finish the French and move into Mercenary territory before finals hit me ???
Until next post
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantI’m not sue how often that second ability will come into play, since I don’t know of anyone who leaves large numbers of crew on an island. I suppose you could modify it for a campaign and use it to wipe out infantry units?
It could potentially be an easy way to eliminate a bunch of abandoned explorers or other crew who are left on islands. In a campaign game, that’s not a huge deal; but in a very large standard game, it could cripple an enemy fleet depending on how far into the game you are, and what crew are eliminated. Especially since most people would be reluctant to face a 10 (even with not-so-good cannons), you could probably hover by the islands and wait for the runners to leave, or just scare them off once they explore.
That strategy would require a lot of “what-ifs” and would probably be a waste of time, though.-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantHello, all
It’s been a looong time since I last posted. School-related commitments have kept me from focusing on anything but school, and more often than not, life happens and priorities become shifted.
But I’m going to start posting more pieces, hopefully more regularly than I have been.Up today, we have the next two pieces from the French in Seas of Doom
Relevant Keywords:
–Man-O’-War: Once per turn, before you give this ship a shoot action, roll a d6. On a result of an odd number, her cannons become 2-rank for this turn. On a result of an even number, she eliminates two masts with each hit.–EA: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5-6, give this ship an extra action.
3. Le Gardien
Points: 22
Masts: 4
Cannons: 4S, 3L, 3L, 4S
Cargo: 3
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Man-O’-War
Link: Mathis ArtusFlavor: A proper ship of the line, Le Gardien represents the hope that many still have for France to have power and influence on the ocean.
4. Mathis Artus
Points: 8
Ability: Captain. EA.
Link: Le GardienFlavor: Artus is no officer or member of the royal navy, but he has been entrusted with Le Gardien because his experience and strategic mind are more prestigious than any rank.
I will try to post again before the end of the weekend, as there is still much to be posted in Seas of Doom. Until next post.
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantGood evening, everyone
Tonight’s post is exceedingly late, but I finally have some pieces from Seas of Doom with flavor text! ?????

Masts: 4
Cannons: 2L,3L,3L,2L
Cargo: 3
Base Move: L

Cargo: 4
Base Move: L
Ability: Pirate ships get -1 to their cannon rolls against this ship.Flavor: When a French merchant vessel found the Revenant, she was dismasted and beached on an island that did not appear on any map. Knowing her history as a pirate vessel, she was salvaged and is now used to trick unsuspecting pirates into sailing within firing range.
I have no idea when I will post again, but I hope I can squeeze something in tomorrow.
Until next post

Jonathan BowenParticipantHey, y’all
I’m back at the tavern tonight to tell another story from the Dark Tides
Tonight, we join a pair of cursed sailors, as they make the mistake of antagonizing the Spanish…
Adrián de la Cruz
Philippe Desailly and Keith Atkinson were on their knees, hands tied behind their backs with gags in their mouths. They looked around the deck of the Spanish Galleon. About half a dozen men from both of their crews were lined up next to them, each one similarly bound.
The galleon’s captain had yet to show himself, but the other Spanish sailors surrounded the Cursed hostages, guns at the ready. Smoke drifted across the deck of the galleon, obscuring the remains of the Plague and Furies Whip from view.
A pair of loud explosions were heard, emanating from the direction where their ships were, both powerful enough to make the galleon rock. Desailly looked over at Atkinson. Absolute terror was visible in his eyes. Sweat ran down his brow, and tears threatened to descend his cheeks. The mental message he was sending Desailly was clear: I didn’t sign up for this!
A small pang of guilt passed through Philippe. He’d convinced Keith to join him in his attempt to take El Castilla del Infanta. It wasn’t his fault of course; how was he supposed to know the shipping schedule for the Spanish armada? Regardless, they were stuck in this situation now. But Desailly wasn’t worried. He’d find a way to escape.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Keith Atkinson heard shouts behind him. He tried to turn and look, but his movement was met with the butt of a rifle. Bending forward in pain, his fears made themselves known in the form of a quiet sob. This is not what he was promised by his freak of a brother. The shouts behind him became clearer. Someone was speaking rapid-fire Spanish with such hatred and venom that he thought he’d be sick. He’d learned some Spanish back in England, and what he could understand from the angry voice made him wish he hadn’t.
The speaker stepped into view as he finished barking his orders. He wore a simple sailor’s uniform but had a sword with a gilded hilt. He looked down at the Cursed Sailors spread out behind Atkinson and Desailly.
“Matarlos a todos”, he said gesturing towards Atkinson’s and Desailly’s respective crews.
The Spanish sailors leveled their guns at the heads of the oblivious cursed men and fired.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Desailly felt a sliver of fear lodge itself into his heart. The Spaniard looked down at him and Atkinson with such disgust and scorn that he suddenly wished there was a deity he could pray to.
“¿Son ustedes dos los capitanes?”
His words meant nothing to Desailly, but Atkinson seemed to understand. He was grunting and nodding, gesturing frantically to Desailly. Worry filled Philippe. What did he ask?, he wondered.
Whatever it was, Atkinson had supplied him with the wrong answer. The man (Desailly assumed he was the captain) kicked Keith in the face, knocking him onto his back. Keith was coughing up the teeth he almost swallowed when the captain’s sword impaled him, stabbing through his chest, and pinning him to the deck.
A muffled yelp of pain escaped the gag in Atkinson’s mouth. He twitched for a moment, then went still.
The captain pulled his sword from Keith’s body and turned to Desailly.
“You are the Capitan?”
His voice held a thick Spanish accent, but it was understandable to Philippe.
In response, Philippe glared up at him.
The captain smirked, and reached for a pendant he wore on a necklace. The pendant was a large wooden cross with a sharpened long end. The sharp end was stained a deep blood red.
Desailly began to struggle and shout through his gag. The Spaniards behind him held him still as the captain raised the cross-dagger above his head. He swung down, and the Cursed prisoner released a brief, unearthly screech.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Adrián de la Cruz kneeled before the full-size cross in his simple quarters. His wooden cross-dagger was floating in a basin of holy water for cleansing. When he finished his silent prayers, he rose and walked over to the wall behind his bed. He scratched two lines into the wood, adding up with over two hundred others already there. One for each Cursed ship the Cruz de Cristo had sunk. And that concludes the third story from the Dark Tides.
I do not know when the next tale will be told, but I’ll be sure to come back to the Black Mongoose to tell it. Until then, good night.
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Ben, So leave him as-is for now then? Or go with Xerecs’s idea about him?
@Xerecs, Maybe something like “When this ship hits another ship you chose what mast is eliminated”?Hello everyone!
We have reached the last post of Spanish from the Seas of Doom!Relevant Keywords:
Reverse Captain: After completing a shoot action, this ship may move as a free action.
Repeating Guns: When this ship is given a shoot action, you may declare that she is using repeating guns. If all cannons hit during that shoot action, each cannon may shoot again. (This action does not count towards the two action limit) For each cannon that misses on its second shot, eliminate one mast or cargo from this ship.
Armed Merchant: Once per turn, as a free action, one of this ship’s canons may shoot at one enemy target in range. This shot cannot have its range or rank increased. (A captain crew is not needed for this action)
+1 Gold Bonus: One of this ship’s treasures is worth +1 gold when she docks at your home island.
18. La Luz de la Luna
Points: 16
Masts: 4
Cannons: 3S, 4L, 4L, 3S
Cargo: 4
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Schooner. Armed Merchant. +1 Gold Bonus.Flavor: Sister ship to the Luz Del Sol, the Luna is a larger and often more successful merchant vessel, always bringing back exceptionally valuable goods.
19. La Corona Dorada
Points: 19
Masts: 4
Cannons: 3L, 3S, 3S, 3L
Cargo: 2
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Repeating Guns.
Link: Capitán Daniel de la VegaFlavor: Commanded by Capitán de la Vega, La Corona Dorada is a heavily armed gunship, requiring a small, yet expertly trained crew to make her a fearsome foe.
20. Capitán Daniel de la Vega
Points: 7
Ability: Loyal: Spain. Captain. Reverse Captain
Link: La Corona DoradaFlavor: Ever since his rise to command, Daniel de la Vega has been questioned about his name, and whether he is a descendant of the master blacksmith, Joaquin Vega. He has neither denied nor affirmed these questions, preferring to let his actions create his own legacy.
And that finishes the Spanish from Seas of Doom! I will likely take a brief-ish hiatus, as classes have started up for me again, and I still need to create Flavor text for both the French, Mercenaries, and other previous pieces. I expect that my next post will likely consist of a combination of re-worded and/or otherwise variatingly retconned pieces, including added Flavor Text. I honestly don’t know when I will post again, but I can only hope it will be sooner rather than later.
As always, leave your thoughts, comments, questions and concerns below, and I will get to them as soon as I can.
Until next post,
J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantBefore I begin this super late post: Yes, Ben, the ability from my last post about the Aguas Revueltas was about boarding ??
I was just being a bit of a derp at the time of typing/posting ???
Now onto the topic of tonight!Hello, all! For tonight, I’ve got a couple of Spanish crew from Seas of Doom.
Relevant Keywords:
Reroll: Once per turn, you may reroll any die roll you make for this ship; you must use the second die roll result
World-Hater: This ship gets plus one to her cannon rolls against any ship of a different nationality.
EA: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5-6, give this ship an extra action.
16. Isabél Santana
Points: 7
Ability: Reroll. World-Hater.
Link: Andres SantanaFlavor: One of Roberto Santana’s grandchildren, Isabél is a brilliant military tactician. Much to her immense displeasure, only her brother seems to appreciate her skills and intellect.
17. Ándres Santana
Points: 8
Ability: Captain. EA.
Link: Isabel SantanaFlavor: Grandson to Roberto Santana, and the older brother of Isabél Santana, Ándres has received countless accolades and endless recognition for victories he insists wouldn’t have been possible without his uncredited younger sister.
I have been considering swapping Ándres Santana’s EA with SAT(Once per turn, before you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5-6, this ship may be given the Same Action Twice). On this I ask your opinions. If I make the change, I will also drop his point cost to 6 instead of 8. Let me know what you think of this idea and of the two crew as they are. Leave comments, questions, and concerns, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
Until next post,
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Ben: So, I’m thinking I’ll add one of these: Filching Gold, or “This ship gets +1 to cannon rolls. She gets +2 if she initiates the board attempt”
@Xerecs: I’m pretty sure all of Dark Tides (PoDT) has been posted, but I don’t use spreadsheets… ??
I’m not sure about sharing a Google Doc, seeing as the original draft for PoDT got randomly deleted that one time.-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Xerecs: While I am working on numerous sets, I do mention at the end, that after the next couple of Spanish posts, I’ll move on to the next faction in Seas of Doom. Also, I may be weird, but I’m not gonna randomly stop in the middle of Seas of Doom to begin one of the last factions (because Spain is usually one of the last ones I make) of another set. However, if it helps make my future posts less confusing, I can reiterate the set name before I go into the pieces.
I’ll consider making the Aguas a little faster, but not every ship needs to be really good. mediocrity isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I could potentially give her the gold stealing ability (the one you described, I don’t know its short-hand) but I’m not sure what that would do to her point cost.
Honestly, I’d thought that the Rosa Pálida would cause more of a conversation than the Aguas.

Jonathan BowenParticipantHello, y’all. It’s late, so Ima get straight to the point.
More Spanish! Yay!Relevant Keyword:
Man-O’-War: Once per turn, before you give this ship a shoot action, roll a d6. On a result of an odd number, her cannons become 2-rank for this turn. On a result of an even number, she eliminates two masts with each hit.
14. Aguas Revueltas
Points: 14
Masts: 3
Cannons: 4L, 2S, 4L
Cargo: 5
Base Move: L
Ability: Schooner. This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.Flavor: The Riptide, though not a large ship, is excellent at raiding enemy ships and making off with a fuller cargo hold than she started with.
15. La Rosa Pálida
Points: 23
Masts: 5
Cannons: 3S, 4L, 4L, 4L, 3S
Cargo: 4
Base Move: L
Ability: Man-O’-War. After this ship sinks an enemy ship, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls against other ships of the same nationality as the target/sunk shipFlavor: The Pale Rose is another warship built to defend Spain from the thieves and murderers that sail under the Jolly Roger.
The Spanish are coming to a gradual close. And once they’re finished, we move on to the second-to-last faction in Seas of Doom!
As always leave comments, suggestions, concerns, declarations of war, and questions below, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Jonathan BowenParticipantOk, everybody: I’m back again with a continuation of the Spanish from Seas of Doom! 😀
Let’s get right into it!Relevant Keywords:
Battleship: A ship with this keyword has two shots per mast and has Extended Range.
+2 Gold Bonus: One of this ship’s treasures is worth +2 gold when unloaded at your home island.
12. Zuan
Points: 14
Masts: 2
Cannons: 3S,3S
Cargo: 2
Base Move: S+S
Ability: Battleship.Flavor: When Luis Zuan died, it was not in a Spanish prison like his Uncles, but rather in a blaze of glory, defending a crucial fort from a pirate attack. Almirante García-Fernández made sure his legacy would be known with the christening of this vessel.
13. Orgullo de Barcelona
Points: 13
Masts: 3 (jib)
Cannons: 2S,3L,2S
Cargo: 4
Base Move: L
Ability: +2 Gold BonusFlavor: The Pride of Barcelona is, as her name suggests, a merchant ship, hailing from the port city of Barcelona. And, as is in her name, she is one of the best vessels to come from that city.
That does it for today, but hopefully I’ll be able to post more tomorrow. With luck we’ll be through the Spanish soon.
As always, leave me your comments, ideas, questions, and concerns, and I’ll get back to you probably by midnight ?Until next post,

Jonathan BowenParticipantHello again, all!!
I’m back again with some more Spanish from Seas of Doom!Three this time because of a linking situation ??
Relevant Keywords:
1. Man-O’-War: Once per turn, before you give this ship a shoot action, roll a d6. On a result of an odd number, her cannons become 2-rank for this turn. On a result of an even number, she eliminates two masts with each hit.
Now, on to the pieces
9. La Dama de la Medianoche
Points: 22
Masts: 5
Cannons: 4L,3S,3S,3S,4L
Cargo: 5
Base Move: L
Ability: Man-O’-War. When this ship is assigned her linked crew and a helmsman, she gets +L to her base move instead of +S.
Link: Rafael SantiagoFlavor: A new warship, the Lady Midnight is a powerful, yet mysterious galleon, captained by an even more enigmatic man whose personal interests may override direct orders from his superiors.
10. Rafael Santiago
Points: 7
Ability: Cannoneer. This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any ship.
Link: La Dama de la Medianoche; Simon FrayFlavor: A strange man, Capitan Santiago rarely shows himself, even to his own crew, preferring instead to let a foreign friend of his deliver and execute his orders.
11. Simon Fray
Points: 5
Ability: Parley. Crew of any nationality may use their abilities on this ship.
Link: Rafael SantiagoFlavor: Simon Fray is an Englishman, and a close friend of Rafael Santiago. Fray is far more present on the Lady Midnight than her own captain, and he does not hold any biases as to who he hires for crew.
And that’s the halfway point of the Spanish! With luck I will post again tomorrow morning.
As always, leave you comments, concerns, and questions for me, and I will respond as soon as I can.Until next post,
-J. W. Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipantIt would probably affect any time you roll a die.
Like captain Robinson in FoBI.(*but that’s just my speculation)
-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Ben: In my response to Xerecs’s concerns I suggested swapping abilities between the Resuelto and a currently unreleased second ship. I’m going to do part of that, and move a modified version of the Resuelto’s ability to a different ship, but leave the Resuelto with just a cannoneer ability. Would that seriously affect the point cost?
And for the Serenata, I can limit it to one ship, and decrease the speed to S. Would a point cost of 17 be appropriate for her?
Also, I’ll probably refer to Seas of Doom with a spelled out name. The abbreviation was just sort of an inside joke that I accidentally used. ???
-Darkhurst
Jonathan BowenParticipant@Xerecs: I could swap the Resuelto’s second ability with that of a different, currently unreleased ship to just make her a pirate-hater?
And the point cost of the Serenata can be raised. You suggest 18 points?
